SKIL New 18 Volt Lithium Ion Power Tools

Recently Skil launched a new line of Lithium Ion 18 volt tools. The price points seemed to be aimed to directly take on the other DIY targeted brands that are very popular at Lowe’s and Home Depot such as Ryobi, Ridgid and Porter Cable. I haven’t had a chance to get my hands on any of the new Skil Tools and give them a good test but will do a follow up post when I do. Read the full press release below:

SKIL Power Tools
powers up its lithium ion collection with a new line of cordless 18 Volt Lithium Ion tools giving home project enthusiasts and professionals the enhanced performance, durability and convenience they need to tackle any project at affordable prices. Using lithium ion technology that consistently outperforms and outlasts traditional Ni-Cd batteries, SKIL’s new 18 Volt Lithium Ion line offers a unique mix of cordless power tools well suited for a wide array of home repair, outdoor and professional projects.

Along with extra power and stamina, SKIL’s new line of 18 Volt Lithium Ion tools are lighter weight and have a more compact, comfortable design than traditional 18 Volt Ni-Cd power tools. Now offering the greatest value of 18 Volt Drills and combination kits in the Lithium Ion category, SKIL makes upgrading tools simple and cost effective.

“Our new versatile line of cordless power tools will help home owners and contractors get projects done better, faster and more easily.” said Dean Peterson, director, cordless tool product development. “With SKIL’s new 18 Volt Lithium Ion power tools, everyone from your resident handyman to your contractor now has access to the features and capabilities they need to complete projects successfully, without paying a professional price. That added value is especially important in these tough economic times.”

Now available at Lowe’s and skiltools.com, the 18 Volt Lithium Ion line includes the following tools and combination kits:

18 Volt Lithium Ion ½ In. 2-Speed Drill/Driver (Model: 2895LI-02)

Start that kitchen renovation project or build a deck with SKIL’s compact and powerful 18 Volt Lithium Ion Drill/Driver. The cordless driver delivers up to 400 in-lbs of torque with its all metal geartrain and two-speed gear box making it ideal for larger projects or those that require drilling into almost any material. SKIL has engineered the drill with a one-half inch chuck to accept larger diameter bits and a 20+1 position clutch for precise driving into multiple types of materials. With these professional-grade features, this tool can tackle tough applications particularly outdoors and in areas with little access to outlets, while its lightweight lithium ion battery — 50 percent lighter than the Ni-Cd version—reduces user fatigue and holds its charge up to four times longer than Ni-Cd batteries. Ultra-convenient features include removable bit storage, bit size index, built-in level and side-assist handle. It comes ready to go with a carrying case and two double-ended bits and has a recommended retail price of $109. The drill/driver is also available with two batteries for $149.

18 Volt Lithium Ion 2-Piece Drill/Driver and 5-3/8-inch SKILSAW Combo Kit

This two-piece package includes SKIL’s 18 Volt Lithium Ion 5-3/8-inch SKILSAW and Drill/Driver. The 5-3/8-inch SKILSAW has a compact design that can crosscut up to 50 2x4s on a single charge and is more than 20 percent lighter than other models in its class. It is the perfect starter kit for taking on an outdoor project like building your dream deck or a treehouse getaway for your kids. It provides two times more cutting visibility for increased accuracy and a bevel capacity of zero to 50 degrees to accommodate a wider range of cuts. Additional features include a patented anti-snag lower guard, as well as a spindle lock for quick and easy blade changes. The SKIL 18 Volt Lithium Ion 2-Piece Drill/Driver and 5-3/8-inch SKILSAW Combo Kit has a recommended retail price of $199.

18 Volt Lithium Ion 4-Piece Combo Kit

An exceptional value that combines high performance and convenience, the SKIL 18 Volt Lithium Ion 4-Piece Combo Kit includes the one-half inch 2-Speed Drill/Driver, 5-3/8-inch SKILSAW, Orbital Reciprocating Saw and pivoting-head flashlight. This kit will set homeowners and contractors up with a light weight, long lasting and reliable kit that can tackle any project. SKIL’s 4-Piece 18 Volt Lithium Ion Combo Kit has a recommended retail price of $259.

SKIL 18 Volt Lithium Ion Battery/PowerPlus™ System

Now you can upgrade your SKIL Ni-Cd tools to the more efficient lithium ion battery system. New SKIL 18 Volt Lithium Ion batteries can be purchased individually or as a kit with a one-hour charger. Thanks to the SKIL PowerPlus system, rather than throwing away old SKIL 18 Volt Ni-Cd tools, owners can simply purchase the new lithium ion battery kit to use with their existing SKIL 18 Volt Ni-Cd tools. The new batteries will give owners a lighter tool and more consistent power throughout the cycle, plus SKIL lithium ion batteries last up to four times longer than Ni-Cd batteries and hold a charge for up to 18 months, whereas Ni-Cd batteries only hold a charge for about three months. Visit www.skiltools.com for a complete list of SKIL Ni-Cd tools that are compatible with the new Power Plus system. The battery has a recommended retail for $69 and the battery and charger kit has a recommended retail price of $99.

Twitter & Power Tool Business

As the resident computer and marketing geek I am all over any new form of internet technology. I had a different blog before there was the term “blog” and have been on any and every social network site since Al Gore invented the internet. I have never found much adoption among the Power Tool Aficionados to create profiles or groups. The wood working crowd has been ahead of the curve but general tool junkies only have a select few blogs and forums to poke around in.

Twitter.com over the past few months has changed that all around. Every single day lately I’m finding lots of new Twitter pages from individuals, retailers, media outlets and manufacturers all about power tools, projects, videos and other fun stuff that keep me from getting any work done.

Why is it so popular? My guess is it has nothing to do with Oprah or Ashton and everything to do with convenience and simplicity. Anyone who can use the internet can start a twitter page and once you are in all the info you want online is now condensed into simple 1 line posts that continuously update. Below are a few I follow everyday, please comment and add your own links:

CP Pneumatic Belt Sanders CP7858 & CP7859

Chicago Pneumatic has recently introduced two brand new pneumatic belt sanders for getting into the tightest spots. The CP7858 uses a 3/8” x 13” belt while the CP7859 uses a ¾” x 20.5” belt. Both units feature higher RPM (20,000-22,000), 180 degree arm and belt pivot, compact design, powerful motors as well as quick and easy belt changing features.

Along with these impressive features and benefits, perhaps the most important is the quality and durability built into these new CP belt sanders. These new sanders are built to withstand the most demanding tasks and environments. In addition, these new sanders boast a value and price point well within the reach of professional technicians looking for the right tool for difficult applications.

Ohio Power Tool carries the CP7858 3/8” and CP7859 ¾” pneumatic belt sanders as well as a wide range on United Abrasive (SAIT) belts for these models and many others ranging from ¼” to 1” width. If you have any questions about the Chicago Pneumatic tools or sanding belts please do not hesitate to call 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com.

Perfect Mix – 2 Stroke Engine Oil Mixing Made Easy

It’s spring time again and that means it’s time to get back out into the yard and get to work. For some people that means firing up the old 2 stroke engines whether it be for a weed whacker, edger, tiller, chainsaw, gas drill, atv, dirt bike, gokart or whatever else you have using a 2 stroke motor. It’s of course tons of fun trying to remember which gas can you mixed up the oil in and which can is regular gas. Tanaka makes it incredibly easy to mix oil with gas for 2 cycle engines with their Perfect Mix bottle. No messing or guessing. The 16 oz container will make up to 6 gallons of 2 stroke gas and it features a built in measuring cap right in the bottle. Simply squeeze the bottle and the top fills to the level you need. No need to pre mix and store gallons of 2 stroke, simply add mix as you need it in the garage or on a jobsite, no problem. The mix works with all your Tanaka Equipment but also any Partner, Husqvarna, Yamaha, Kawasaki or any other 2 stroke motors.

Ohio Power Tool sells the Tanaka Perfect Mix 16 oz bottle for $4.99, with discounts on case orders. Ohio Power Tool is not typically known for their lawn and garden equipment but do stock a full line of Tanaka gas drills, core machines, augers and accessories used by a wide range of professionals.

Bosch Tools – Wireless Charging Cordless Power Tools

As mentioned in the last post, Bosch was nice enough to invite me to their US headquarters last week to check out the recently launched products and stuff being launched in the very near future. Some of the stuff was top secret so unfortunately I probably shouldn’t mention anything about time travel, teleportation or cold fusion power tools, I may or may not have seen. We did get a chance to play with a very interesting technology for powering cordless devices without a typical charger. The technology was launched at CES over a month ago but it was really impressive to see in action.

You may have seen a similar technology for powering cell phones and iPods which will likely become very common within the next year or so. Through a joint effort partnership with Fulton Innovations, Energizer, Motorola, Bosch and several other companies a stronger system has been developed for powering products that require a much higher amount of energy like kitchen appliances, laptops and Bosch Power Tools. Simply set an eCoupled device on the plate and it will automatically detect the device and power it with the correct amount of energy. Several completely different items with different power requirements can all be run/charged simultaneously without a problem.

The system for Bosch Power Tools would be built into the batteries, so the tools will most likely remain the same and while new tool kits may feature the technology it is likely an upgrade kit will be available for existing tools. So don’t worries, your new 18V Litheon tools are not going to be obsolete anytime soon. To see how the system works checkout this youtube video of working drill and combo kit units.

Bosch Pneumatic Tools - Full Force

For the past several days I had the opportunity to visit Bosch US headquarters and checkout some of the upcoming new products. It was really interesting to learn more about the company and the great lengths they go through to ensure the highest quality products. Many others attended the event as well so it was also a good opportunity to chat with some of the other power tool bloggers from Toolsnob, Toolmonger, Toologics as well as really great people from various magazines and other media outlets.

One of the big product launches is the new line of Bosch Pneumatic Tools named Bosch Full Force. I got a chance to use these tools along with the competition and I was really impressed with the performance, smaller size and lighter weight. They also incorporated several new features including the strike plate on the back which is commonly used as a hammer to align beams. Also the nail cartridge is extremely easy to remove without any additional tools so clearing jams takes seconds. In development for several years these tools may have missed the high times of home building but with the Bosch long term strategy focus they are very optimistic they will own the market 3,5,10 years down the road. As new products do take some time to prove themselves once they are on the market it may actually work out to their advantage launching into a slower building cycle. By the time home building picks up again they will have a proven track record and be able to really have some strong sales. The Bosch units are compatible with any other brand of nails and don't plan on launching their own nails in the near future.

Units will be available on OhioPowerTool.com shortly with the framing nailers and several compressors available this month. The roofing, brad, narrow crown and finishing nailers will be available over the next few months. In total there will be 7 nailers and 5 compressors by the end of summer. Checkout the videos below for more details! Stay tuned, more new Bosch products coming next week on Coptool.

Milwaukee Power Tool's New Website

Milwaukee Electric Tool has recently updated its website www.milwaukeetool.com and there are many new features which have been improved for the new website. Graphically the new site is very attractive and easy to navigate. The new site is also heavily focused on providing a direct link to purchase products. These links go to a Google Shopping search page which allows customers to select from a list of potential retailers and select the best price. In many cases this system does an effective job however searching the new products I found many cases where the google page would show the Milwaukee tools along with several their competitors. From a shopping experience I don’t see a big problem with also having some competitor models in the search field but if I were Milwaukee spending a lot of time and money to drive traffic to my site only to have a potential customers at the last minute switch to a competitor’s brand that might be frustrating.

An example of this would be the very first tool listed on the “New Products & Offers” page gives you these results (google page) for the 6116-30 grinder at the time of this post it provided 3 Milwaukee models (although not the correct model) from Amazon, Ebay & Ohio Power Tool. It also displays 4 Makita models, a Black & Decker, Hitachi and Metabo. For old models of tools the system works better but new models are typically where you are going to find people looking to manufacturer sites for more info. Hopefully they will work to improve some of those systems. Overall I think the site is a huge step forward from the user side.

Check out Ohio Power Tool if you are interested in shopping for Milwaukee Tools, most of the new products are online and ready to ship today.

Bosch Hole Saw Deals & Free Dare Devil Spade Bits

While supplies last, you can get a free set of Bosch Dare Devil Spade Bits with any Bosch Hole Saw kit purchased. The free set DSB5006P includes 6 of the most popular sizes (3/8”, ½”, 5/8”, ¾”, 7/8” & 1”) as well as a durable carry case. If you have not had the pleasure to use the new Dare Devil Spade Bits, these are unlike anything you have drilled with before. Checkout this Youtube video below for more info on the Bosch Dare Devil Bits.

The Bosch Hole Saw Kits all feature the Bosch Quick Change Universal System which makes switching sizes a tool free task that takes only a few seconds. Simply release the mandrel and the saw is quickly changed out. The system can use all major brands of current hole saws so if you already have several hole saws no problem they will work with the Bosch kits. The system also features an enlarger adaptor (sold separately) which allows for very precise enlarging of existing holes.

In addition to the free Dare Devil bit set, all the hole saw kits on Ohio Power Tool are priced very competitively but for a limited time there is also special pricing on the Bi-Metal 25 piece Hole saw kit HB25M for $108, below all national competitors at the time of this post (according to Google Shopping). There are only a limited number of Free Dare Devils are available and special pricing on the 25 piece kit won’t last long.

The video below shows the Bosch Carbide and Milwaukee Big Hawg hole saws. These two look similar but are not intended for the same tasks. The Bosch Carbide can go through cement, wood, plastic and other materials while the Milwaukee is build specifically to go through wood. If you are looking for a wood only hole saw the Milwaukee is much cheaper and quicker. If you on the other hand are looking for the most versatile hole saw on the market today the Bosch Carbide Hole Saws might be right up your alley.

Power Tool Drag Race - Columbus, Ohio

Recently I joined a great community workshop, www.ColumbusIdeaFoundry.com, to collaborate on some different projects, meet interesting people and learn some new stuff. One of the ideas being bounced around as a collaborative effort with the www.thefusefactory.org was a Power Tool Drag Race. I am happy to say the event has come together and hopefully it will draw a nice crowd, be a ton of fun and build awareness for these two great organizations.

Most of you have probably heard about Power Tool Drag Racing before, there have been a few events on the west coast, plenty of youtube videos, news stories and other coverage of these events. On Saturday June 20th there will be an all day event in Columbus to build and race your own power tool drag racers.

This event has an optional workshop early in the day if you are interested in learning to build a racer and don’t feel comfortable doing it on your own. All building materials will be available although you are also encouraged to bring your own power tool, wheels and style elements. The actual race will start at 4:00 pm and open to everyone as spectators or racers. Racers need to register before but spectators can just show up. Check out this website for more info:  www.PowerToolDragRacesColumbus.com

Stepping up as the main event sponsor Ohio Power Tool jumped in to supply power tool prize packages for the winners, materials for the tracks, advertising and other materials needed for the event. If your company is interested in also sponsoring the event I know they are open to more sponsors.

The Segway Car – GM Teams up with Segway to Spend Some Bailout Money

I saw this hilarious mode of transportation and couldn’t help but think the obvious… do I want one or do I want to run one over. The second thought; did we just give GM billions of dollars in bailout money so they could make a Segway car? After reading into the press release some, many of the ideas of this new vehicle “P.U.M.A.” are working to promote vehicle to vehicle communications so we can finally get our cars to drive themselves which sounds good to me. Check out the video and more images - http://www.segway.com/puma/

NEW YORK - General Motors Corp. and Segway today demonstrated a new type of vehicle that could change the way we move around in cities.

Dubbed Project P.U.M.A. (Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility), GM and Segway are developing an electrically powered, two-seat prototype vehicle that has only two wheels. It could allow people to travel around cities more quickly, safely, quietly and cleanly - and at a lower total cost. The vehicle also enables design creativity, fashion, fun and social networking.

GM and Segway announced their collaboration, while demonstrating the Project P.U.M.A. prototype in New York City this morning.

"Project P.U.M.A. represents a unique solution to moving about and interacting in cities, where more than half of the world's people live," said Larry Burns, GM vice president of research and development, and strategic planning. "Imagine small, nimble electric vehicles that know where other moving objects are and avoid running into them. Now, connect those vehicles in an Internet-like web and you can greatly enhance the ability of people to move through cities, find places to park and connect to their social and business networks."

Trends indicate that urbanization is growing, and with that comes increased congestion and more competition for parking. Cities around the world are actively looking for solutions to alleviate congestion and pollution. Project P.U.M.A. addresses those concerns. It combines several technologies demonstrated by GM and Segway, including electric drive and batteries; dynamic stabilization (two-wheel balancing); all-electronic acceleration, steering and braking; vehicle-to-vehicle communications; and autonomous driving and parking. Those technologies integrate in Project P.U.M.A. to increase mobility freedom, while also enabling energy efficiency, zero emissions, enhanced safety, seamless connectivity and reduced congestion in cities.

"We are excited to be working together to demonstrate a dramatically different approach to urban mobility," said Jim Norrod, CEO of Segway Inc. "There's an emotional connection you get when using Segway products. The Project P.U.M.A. prototype vehicle embodies this through the combination of advanced technologies that Segway and GM bring to the table to complete the connection between the rider, environment, and others."

Project P.U.M.A. vehicles will also allow designers to create new fashion trends for cars, and to focus on the passion and emotion that people express through their vehicles while creating solutions that anticipate the future needs of urban customers.

The Project P.U.M.A. prototype vehicle integrates a lithium-ion battery, digital smart energy management, two-wheel balancing, dual electric wheel motors, and a dockable user interface that allows off-board connectivity. The result is an advanced and functional concept that demonstrates the capabilities of technology that exists today.

Built to carry two or more passengers, it can travel at speeds up to 35 miles per hour (56 kph), with a range up to 35 miles (56 km) between recharges.

Since the introduction of the Segway Personal Transporter (PT), Segway has established itself as the leader in the small electric vehicle space. Its approach to congestion and environmental challenges is balanced with a strong understanding of the functional needs of its customers, enabling them to do more with less. Segway has delivered more than 60,000 lithium-ion batteries to the market.

GM has been a leader in "connected vehicle" technologies since it introduced OnStar in 1996. Today, this on-board communications package connects six million subscribers in North America to OnStar safety and security services. GM has also pioneered vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications systems and transponder technology. These and additional connected vehicle technologies could ultimately enable vehicles that don't crash and drive themselves.

"Imagine moving about cities in a vehicle fashioned to your taste, that's fun to drive and ride in, that safely takes you where you want to go, and "connects" you to friends and family, while using clean, renewable energy, producing zero vehicle tailpipe emissions, and without the stress of traffic jams," said Burns. "And imagine doing this for one-fourth to one-third the cost of what you pay to own and operate today's automobile. This is what Project P.U.M.A. is capable of delivering."

New Milwaukee M18 High Torque Cordless Impact Wrenches

Milwaukee has really gotten serious about the cordless impact market. I think they may now the most complete line of cordless impact wrenches on the market, even surpassing automotive giants like Ingersoll Rand IQv and Chicago Pneumatic.

Available May 1 there are two new ½” cordless Milwaukee M18 high torque impact drivers. The two new models are the 2662-22 & 2663-22 which are almost identical tools with the only different in the anvil. The anvil on the M18 2662-22 features a Pin Detent, while the 2663-22 uses a Friction Ring. Personally I would say get the friction ring version, as the new rings are like $1.20 and very easy to get and replace.

Both of the new Milwaukee versions feature 450 ft-lbs torque, highest of any cordless impacts on the market. The Milwaukee M18 line currently features several other impacts including ¼” hex, 3/8” square as well as the current ½” impact 2652-22 which also features the pin detent type anvil. The current ½” impact is has a higher RPM & IPM speed but lower torque, below 200 ft-lbs. In addition to these 5 models of M18 impacts there will also be a ¾” square and 7/16” hex available later this summer. The ¾” will have tons of juice for a cordless at 525 ft-lbs but a good ¾” pneumatic would be around 1,200 ft-lbs so keep that in mind.

Now is the Time to pick up these new impacts as well as any other Milwaukee M18 tools at Ohio Power Tool because you will also get your choice from 5 free M18 tools & M18 XC battery. In addition Ohio Power Tool is also offering Free Shipping for all Milwaukee Tools in April (coupon code:april). The impacts won’t be out till May 1st but the coupon will work with pre orders placed this month so get your orders in now and save on shipping and get a free tool.

CST/berger Laser Levels & Measuring Tools

As you may remember from last year the CST/berger company was acquired by The Robert Bosch Tool Corporation. As one of the premier names in the industry there may have been some concern Bosch was just looking for the name however this is not the case. Almost all the employees and facilities have remained with the company and now work together with the teams from Bosch Laser & Measuring, David White and Rolatape to form one of the largest players in the laser and measuring tool industry. Working together and sharing engineers, resources, patents, designs, talent and backed by the innovative culture of Bosch, I expect really good things to come.

The Dot Laser Levels are primarily used for interior alignment and layout purposes. The dot or point laser makes it extremely simple to find level or plumb and set 90 degree angles. The easy to use features, low cost and compact size make it a easy choice for even a DIY user.

The Line Laser Levels are extremely versatile and primarily used indoors but also have many outdoor uses. These are the perfect choice for hanging cabinets and fixtures or aligning wires and pipes. The line laser also makes hanging a perfectly level drop ceiling so much easier than ever before. The LM2 model is ideal for flooring applications such as tile because it holds two perfectly 90 degree lines and unlike chalk lines you can never cover a laser with mortar and loose the line.

The Rotary Laser Levels are the most sophisticated of the laser levels with many interior and exterior uses. There are unfortunately many models and packages to choose from which can seem intimidating at first but if you know generally what your needs are, you will find it is very strait forward in determine the right rotary laser for you. Rotary lasers are perfect for ensuring a level floor throughout an area, doing interior or exterior building layouts and work up to 2800 ft. away with a detector. For interior use most models will work in lay-down mode with vertical self leveling but another great option is the Bosch Dual-Axis rotary laser, the only one on the market, which lays a horizontal and vertical laser.

Ohio Power Tool is proud to add the CST/berger lasers and measuring tools to its line-up. Bosch continues to show tremendous innovation in so many or its products and we are very excited to see what new and exciting products will be introduced from CST in the years to come, now that they have such a solid company behind them. If you have any questions about laser and measuring tools please call the experts at 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com.
