Bosch P2 + R2 Combo Driver Bits

I know you probably have not been waiting on the edge of your seats in anticipation for new driver bit technology to hit the street but the new Bosch P2R2 bit is a pretty nice addition. It works extremely well on both Phillips P2 and Robertson R2 (square drive) screws, saving the time and frustration of switching bits, loosing bits and/or digging in the tool box for the other bit. We have already put these bits to the test and the shop guys said they pass the test, which doesn’t always happen. The bits are a few pennies more but for the convenience and time savings very much worth it.

We continue to be impressed with Bosch's constant innovation to simple accessories were you couldn't imagine seeing anything new. The P2R2 bits will be available around Mid June; you will be able to order them shortly on Ohio Power Tool in packs of 15, 1” bits for $4.43.

Detection Tools: M12 Sub-Scanner vs DMD4K vs D-Tect 100

The Milwaukee M12 Sub-Scanner 2290-21 is due out in July and will be able to detect wood studs, pipes, AC wires and rebar in concrete up to 6” deep. Currently the closest competing product would be the Bosch DMD4k Multi-Detector which can also detect various types of materials but only detect rebar in concrete 4” deep. The design of the Milwaukee is also much easier for scanning large areas with the 4 wheel design, it will role across a surface with ease, perfect for mapping out & drilling large areas of concrete.

The M12 Sub-Scanner looks very much like another Bosch detection tool I found on the German site called the D-Tect 100 Wallscanner (see here http://www.wallscanner.de/). This gadget shares the 4 wheel design of the Milwaukee Sub-Scanner but has a much larger display which displays the objects graphically similar to how a fish finder works. It gives a very good representation of where objects are, how deep and continues to show items you already passed over. This product of course is not available in the US and there are no expected dates but hopefully we will see this item in the US down the road.

Campbell Hausfeld – Introduces 3 New Air Nailers

You may have read about the new Campbell Hausfeld nailers in a recent post on http://www.toolsnob.com but I though we might touch on it as well because there are some interesting features with these new nailers. Here are some of the high points:

- Low Nail Indicator Light – A light on the gun turns yellow when there are less than 10 nails and red when there are less than 5 nails.
- Quick Clean Latch – An easy tool-free way to clear out gun jams.
- Bubble Level – Horizontal & vertical to eliminate blow-out and increase fastening strength and stability.
- Laser Pointer Placement – A laser dot indicates exactly where the nail is going to go.
- Built-in Stud Finder – The finish nailer (15 gauge) has a build in light that indicates when the gun is over a stud.

Some other features include oil-free operation, swivel air inlets, tethered no-mar tips and Anti-dry fire to keep from damaging wood. These all sound great and I know the CH pricing is going to be targeting the economically minded. How important are some of these “new technology” features to many professionals? My guess would be not a fraction as important as strait up durability and some of these features might be looked at as just another thing that’s going to break and take the gun out of commission for several days/weeks while its getting repaired. In general features like lasers and built-in stud finders, I think sometimes can actually hurt a product in the pro market.

However for the DIYers out there looking for an inexpensive nailer for the occasional projects a built-in stud finder could be a huge advantage. I’d like to see some more details on this to make sure the lights no going to go off when it finds PVC, ducts, wires, brick, pipe, etc in addition to studs. Overall I think these guns should do very well, hopefully I’ll get my hands on them to test out at some point.

Check out the micro-site www.chnailers.com for videos and more product details on these new tools.

How to Cut Floor Tile with Rotozip Tools

I recently saw a demo of the new Rotozip Tile-Dock and CR18L Cordless Rotozip, which uses the Bosch 18v Litheon batteries. There were several things I though were interesting about the demo starting with the Tile-Dock TD1-10. I’ve never seen anything like it, although I’m not a professional floor guy, but the few tiling projects I’ve done this would have been big help. Lightweight easy to carry, stores all the accessories and has a dust collection hook-up which is becoming more and more a priority these days with new laws and regulations. Obviously the Tile Dock could be used with any tool cutting tile such as a diamond grit hole saw or diamond sawzall blade.

The Rotozip CR18L had some nice features as well. I love that it uses the Bosch 18v Lithium batteries because the last thing anyone wants is another battery system, this way you’ll always have extra batteries ready. Also the fact that the diamond X-bits don’t need to be cooled with water is very convenient with a lot less setup / cleanup. This is not the tool for making the full tile strait cuts but almost every job is going to require several curved cuts, notch outs and/or holes made. This is a great solution.

If you have any questions about any of the Rotozip tools or accessories you can contact Ohio Power Tool at 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com. Special thanks to Dave for doing the demo a second time so I could capture it for the YouTube Video below. Please give it a good rating so he’ll feel good about himself and come back to do more videos we can all enjoy.

Milwaukee Laser Temp-Gun Thermometers 2266-20 & 2277-21

The New surface temperature Temp-Guns from Milwaukee are available as part of the M12 system or available for use with standard Alkaline batteries. All of the available units are built for professional use with 1.5% accuracy range, K-Type thermocouple input and <500ms response time. There are however several differences in the models other than the power system.

Laser Temp-Gun 2266-20

At a lower price the 2266-20 Temp-Gun has a temp range from -20 to 932 F, a 12 to 1 distance to spot ratio and a slide rail system that allows accessories such as the voltage detector / light tool to be attached and used as part of the Temp-Gun. This gun meets and/or beats basically every competitor even up to the $200 price range and with the added accessories can offers features well beyond anything else.

M12 Laser Temp-Gun 2277-21

The M12 2277-21 Temp-Gun is truly in a class by itself. With an expanded temperature range of -40 to 1472 F and a 40 to 1 distance to spot ratio, you get improved safety and accuracy in even the most demanding situations. The M12 unit also features built-in LED work light and non-contact voltage detection. The cherry on top is that the M12 Temp-Gun 2277-21 features humidity and dew point measurements. If you currently own other M12 tools and don’t need the additional M12 battery, case and charger, you can also get the M12 Temp-Gun as a tool only, see 2277-20.

Hopefully this helps clarify the difference between the Milwaukee Temp-Guns. These tools are not only convenient and a really cool technology they are also an important safety tool which might warn of potential electrical problems. If you have any questions about the new Milwaukee Test & Measure tools please feel free to email sales@ohiopowertool.com and the guys at Ohio Power Tool will be happy to help.

Milwaukee Test & Measure Tools - Multimeters & Forkmeters

As you may have already seen from the two posts yesterday Milwaukee has a lot of new test & measure tools coming in July. Just to clarify these are not some re-branded cheap import items painted red. Milwaukee has been working on these new tools for some time and has hired industry leaders, in some case from top competitors, to build these new test & measuring tools from the ground up. The group systematically looked at each tool individually, compared it with all the competition and found new ways to improve the functionality through extensive interviews with real professionals in the trade.

Digital Multimeter 2217-20

The new digital multimeter 2217-20 from Milwaukee has several features most competitor models do not currently offer. One problem Milwaukee looked to combat is the “Ghost Voltage” phenomenon where energized lines create a magnetic field affecting other wires in the bundle resulting in higher voltage readings than actually exist in the individual wires. The Lo-Z feature eliminates this problem and gives accurate readings to the user. In addition to stronger more durable housing, easier one handed controls and larger clear displays the 2217-20 also features a slide rail system to add proprietary accessories, such as the Volt Detector / Work Light mentioned in our previous post, for additional functionality.

Fork Meters – Electrician 2205-20 & HVAC/R 2206-20

Both of the new Folk Meters incorporate several features most competitors do not such as non-contact voltage detection and LED work lights. Some differences in the two models are the 2205-20 electrician’s model features the Lo-Z measurement, mentioned above to eliminate “Ghost Voltage”, while the HVAC/R 2206-20 feature DC microamps & contact temperature reading more commonly used in those industries.

All 3 of these tools are part of the Milwaukee Alkaline Test & Measure tools which basically means they use standard batteries vs the M12 Test & Measure tools also available. If you have any questions about any of the new tools contact the pros at Ohio Power Tool at 800-242-4424.

SKIL Worm Drive Challenge

Check out the latest contest from Skil Power Tools. One thing I really like about this contest is that there are lots of prizes to win if by chance you don’t get to drive off with the grand prize Big Dog Chopper. If you have a pretty good story and picture about using your Skil saw you stand a pretty decent shot at walking away with at least a $50 visa card or New Worm Drive SKILSAW, 35 total 2nd and 3rd place prizes. If you don’t have a good story, you still have until August 1st to come up with something. Also the website looks great, defiantly worth checking out even if you don’t have a Skil saw.

The contest runs through August 1. For official SKIL Worm Drive Challenge rules and more information on how to enter, visit www.SKILWormDriveChallenge.com.

New Milwaukee Voltage Detector & Work Light 2201-20

Another new Milwaukee tool that is part of the new Test & Measure line is the 2201-20 Voltage Detector. You may think voltage detectors are all the same but the Milwaukee features options not available with most competitors. The 2201-20 features a built in LED work light which is 3 times stronger than the closest competitor with a light. The unit will also slide into the Laser Temp-Gun and Digital Multimeter to increase the tools performance and usability. I haven’t seen these units in person so I’m not sure how that works yet but will be happy to report more on how exactly that works once I get my hands on one.

This unit is relatively inexpensive at $25, available for PRE-ORDER now on Ohio Power Tool. Check out the full line of New Milwaukee Test & Measure tools which fall into two general categories based on their batteries M12 Test & Measure or Alkaline Test & Measure. Expect to see these units on the shelf sometime in July.

Milwaukee M12 Clamp-Gun & Alkaline Clamp Meters

As part of the new Milwaukee Line of Test & Measurement Tools there are 4 different options for Clamp Meters. The M12 Clamp-Gun meters are two of the new meters that work with the M12 battery system. The gun design makes the display easier to read the display in many situations. The 2238-21 unit is specifically designed for HVAC/R use with the main differences of Amps AC = 600, Microamps DC = 600 & Contact Temperature reading. The 2239-21 unit which is designed for Electricians features Amps AC = 1000, Amps DC = 1000 and Frequency readings. These M12 Clamp-guns come with a charger, battery and case but are also available as tool only options for those that already have existing M12 tools and charger - 2238-20 HVAC & 2239-20 Electrical.

The other 2 Clamp Meters have a more tradition design that work off standard alkaline batteries. The HVAC/R model 2236-20 and the Electrical model 2237-20 are more similar than the M12 Clamp-Guns with the only difference that the HVAC unit has Contact Temperature reading while the Electrical unit features Frequency reading.

All 4 new Milwaukee Clamp Meters feature a LED work light, true RMS, Continuity and Capacitance. The difference between the M12 & Alkaline other than the obvious shape most notably include CAT III 1000V / CAT IV 600V (M12) vs CAT III 600V (Alkaline) and Jaw Size, 1.57” (M12) vs 1.3” (Alkaline).

All the new Milwaukee Test & Measuring tools are expected out sometime in July 2009 after the current M12 Free Tool promotions have ended but it is possible new promotions could be available at that time, although we haven’t heard anything yet. PRE-SALES on the units are available now for Ohio Power Tool. If you have any questions on any of the new units for Milwaukee Test & Measure Tools you can email sales@ohiopowertool.com and they will do their best to get an answer for you.

PAVING THE WAY TO A BETTER LIFE

How rock demolition with Bosch equipment helped residents and Engineers Without Borders volunteers clear the way for a street that will improve living conditions and unite the residents of a small community in El Salvador

Read the Full Case Study with All Images - View PDF

The Need

San Pedro Puxtla is a town of about 8,500, located in western El Salvador, approximately 10 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean.  On the southern edge of the town lies Las Pilitas, a poor neighborhood of about 140 residents. With no connecting street, Las Pilitas is virtually cut off from the rest of the town, especially during the rainy season, limiting access to health care and other services.  To make matters worse, the neighborhood is situated near a former landfill, and standing water puts residents at increased risk for disease.

Monica Suber, a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer based in San Pedro Puxtla, contacted Engineers Without Borders™ USA (EWB-USA), a non-profit humanitarian organization that helps developing communities worldwide with their engineering needs.  The EWB-USA Central Ohio Professionals chapter, based in Columbus, Ohio, responded and made their first site assessment in September of 2008.  The team developed preliminary plans for a cost-effective street and drainage system, approximately 120 meters long, to be built primarily with local materials and labor performed by the Las Pilitas residents.

“Once the street is completed, the 32 families who live in the marginalized community of Las Pilitas will no longer be isolated,” Suber said.  “Where they were once completely cut off for half the year, social and economic opportunities will finally become available to them.  The social impact of being connected year-round with relatives and friends, as well as other people and resources in the larger community, is important to the well-being of the families in Las Pilitas.

“In addition,” added Suber, “a road will improve access to heath care facilities in San Pedro Puxtla and help eliminate favorable conditions for the reproduction of mosquitoes that cause malaria, dengue and other potentially grave mosquito-born illnesses.”

The Challenge

During the site assessment, the EWB team quickly recognized a major obstacle that needed to be met in the first phase of construction.

More than 50 large boulders, ranging up to 6 feet in size, blocked the most suitable route for the new street.  The composition of the boulders was identified as predominantly andesite, which has a hardness rating comparable to granite.

Moreover, the terrain in the vicinity of the proposed street, together with space constraints and lack of vehicle access, ruled out the use of large equipment or heavy air compressors to break or move the boulders.  Removal would need to be accomplished by manual labor, meaning the boulders had to be reduced to pieces that could be lifted and moved by hand.

Further complicating matters, the route for the street is in close proximity to the homes in the Las Pilitas neighborhood.  For the comfort and safety of the families, the EWB team agreed that conventional blasting was not an option, due to safety concerns.

In addition, the volunteer team hoped to develop a low-tech method for boulder demolition and removal that the residents of Las Pilitas could continue to perform independently after the EWB team completed their one week return trip to San Pedro Puxtla.

The Solution

The EWB team turned to Ohio Power Tool in Columbus for advice on how to achieve the rock demolition.  When EWB decided to use plug and feathers to safely break the boulders into manageable pieces, Ohio Power Tool recommended the Bosch 11241EVS 1-9/16-inch SDS-Max Combination Hammer Drill to best meet the challenge of drilling the necessary 5/8-inch diameter holes in the rock.  At only 16 pounds, the Bosch 11241EVS rotary hammer drill delivers 6.2 ft. lbs. of impact force, enough for drilling 5-inch deep holes into the hard rock in less than a minute.  The vibration-dampening handle reduces vibration up to 40%, making drilling for extensive periods more comfortable for the user.

A product demonstration was held in Columbus in March 2009, giving the project team an opportunity not only to see the Bosch hammer drill in action but also to become familiar with the techniques they would need to accomplish the demolition on-site in El Salvador.  Two boulders, each approximately 2-1/2 feet in diameter, were utilized in the test – one a hard granite, the second a dense sandstone.  Six 5/8-inch diameter holes were drilled in each hole across a plane where the rock was to be split.  The 5-inch-deep holes, spaced at 6 inches on center, were each drilled in less than a minute.  After drilling, a plug and feather set was placed in each hole and struck with a mini-sledge hammer in sequence until the rock split.  The plug and feather sets place a tensile force on the rock and are capable of splitting extremely hard rock up to 6 feet in diameter.

Following the success of the product demonstration, Ohio Power Tool provided the EWB team with two Bosch 11241EVS drills at a reduced cost for use at the El Salvador project site.  In addition, Ohio Power Tool donated twelve 5/8-inchdiameter drill bits.  Two drills were to be utilized simultaneously at the project site to increase the speed and efficiency of the boulder demolition.  It was estimated that over 1,500 holes would need to be drilled in order to complete the demolition.

“We were very optimistic about the success of the boulder demolition in the Las Pilitas community,” said Amanda Engle, project manager for the Las Pilitas roadway project.  “The Bosch hammer drills are comfortable, easy to handle and have more than enough power to perform the drilling operations quickly and easily.  Due to the success of our demolition tests stateside, we were confident the method would be well received by the community members performing the labor.”

The Result

The Central Ohio Professionals chapter returned to San Pedro Puxtla in April 2009 for one week to work side-by-side with the local residents to demolish the rocks.  After only a couple of demonstrations with the plug-and-feather technique, the residents were working on their own to break the rocks.  Two workers operated the two Bosch 11241EVS 1-9/16-inch SDS-Max Combination Hammer Drills, while the remainder of the labor force placed plug and feather sets and split the rocks.  With extension cords, the drills could be used in tight spaces that were not accessible with heavy equipment.

As predicted, each hole took less than a minute to drill, and a team of 5 men completed the required rock demolition in only 10 working days.  The Bosch hammer drills performed flawlessly, even when run continuously for hours at a time.  The manageable weight and shock-absorbing handle ensured that the workers could work 8-hour shifts without experiencing significant muscle fatigue.

“We are very glad that EWB supplied us with these drills and helped us acquire new skills that will empower us to improve our community,” said local project supervisor and Las Pilitas resident, Don Jose Angel.

The project could not have been completed without the advice and assistance of Ohio Power Tool and Bosch equipment.  The equipment donated by Ohio Power Supply and Bosch saved the EWB team nearly a thousand dollars in equipment purchase or rental.

The next phase of construction, tentatively planned to begin in November, will include the strategic placement of retaining walls, fill material and drainage structures to support and define the future road bed.

“After many years of being separated from San Pedro Puxtla, the residents of the Las Pilitas neighborhood are closer to realizing a dream, thanks to combining their own hard work with the donations from Ohio Power Tool,” said Engle. “We were pleasantly surprised to see the boulder demolition accomplished with no blasting, no dust and no danger to the neighborhood children or others residents.”

About Engineers Without Borders

The activities of EWB-USA range from the construction of sustainable systems that developing communities can own and operate without external assistance, to empowering such communities by enhancing local, technical, managerial, and entrepreneurial skills.  These projects are initiated by, and completed with, contributions from the host community working with our project teams.

Central Ohio Professionals chapter of EWB-USA was established in 2007 in partnership with student chapters at The Ohio State University and Ohio University.  In addition to the San Pedro Puxtla project, the Central Ohio Professionals chapter is also in the initial phase of a project to provide potable water sources for the people of Batoula, Cameroon.  For more information, visit www.ewb-usa.org and www.ewbcoh.org.

CST/berger Laser Levels - Free Shipping

Until the end of the month you can get free ground shipping on all CST/berger laser tools anywhere in the continental US. This includes all dot lasers, line lasers, rotary lasers and pipe lasers. Many of the lasers themselves are available in a number of different kits that include any accessories you might need.

When ordering Lasers online make sure you read the fine print on what is included with your purchase. For instance on rotary lasers each model has 3-5 different configurations which might include, a detector, tripod, measuring rod and other accessories. Typically a Compete Package will have everything; a Detector Package will no include tripod or rod and an Interior Package will be the basic laser with v-mount, targets, glasses and case. However even one or two of the interior packed include detectors. Keep this in mind when price shopping online, it is easy to get confused and some suppliers out there might take advantage of that. If you have any questions about what is included in any package or what package is right for you talk to the guys at Ohio Power Tool at 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com.

Milwaukee M12, M18 & V28 Free Tool Deals

Typically Milwaukee will run a promotion for a free tool or battery deal a few times a year with a lot of success. Currently they are running this deal on all their cordless tools simultaneously as well as launching several new products.

Milwaukee M12 Free Tool Deal

The M12 deal applies to most tools and combo kits in the line up although I did not see the M-spector or Micro Driver on the list. This deal is available until June 30th.  Milwaukee has also included 2 new products that work with this deal, the 2410-22 3/8” M12 drill/driver and 2320-21 M12 2-beam plumb laser level. More info to come on those...  There are 5 available FREE items to choose from including the new (available in a few days) M12 Power Port 2349-20. The most value for this deal would be the Hackzall 2420-20 ($110). – M12 Tools & Rebate PDF

Milwaukee M18 Free Tool Deal

This deal was available last month and runs through June 30th along with the Milwaukee M12 Deal. This deal includes almost all the M18 tool kits and combos except the compact kits like the 2691-22 which is only $199 anyway. The 2680-20 Grinder ($219) is probably the best value in the deal but another tool maybe more useful in your situation. – M18 Tools & Rebate PDF

Milwaukee V28 Free Tool Deal

This deal is a little more limited than the M12 or M18 deals. It only applies to the 4-tool combo, 3-tool combo and V28 Hammer Drill. The free tool option is also more limited to the ½” square impact, V28 battery or V28 wet/dry vac. The best deal here is the Impact ($271) but with a new combo kit a 3rd battery is also a good choice. I’m not sure who would choice the vacuum as they typically retail for under $100 but these are great add-ons in specific applications. – V28 Tools & Rebate PDF

The reason these deals are so rich is simple. Statistically people don’t take the time to send in the mail-in rebate. Commonly 25% or less of mail-in rebates from tool vendors get used. Why??? I have no clue but if you take advantage you can potentially see up to 40% back in FREE TOOLS. Think of it this way, Milwaukee is putting 10% of all sales back into a rebate pot. If only 1 in 4 take advantage, that 1 guy gets a much bigger deal and their marketing teams get to field day. Be that guy, send in the rebate and get awesome stuff free.
