M12 Drill/Driver 2410-22 vs Bosch 12v PS30-2A – Part 2

The Milwaukee 2410-22 have been shipped and those that pre-ordered from Ohio Power Tool should be receiving their orders starting today. I thought it would be a good opportunity to take a few pictures and compare the sizes and some of the features verse the 12V Bosch PS30-2A, currently the most popular compact drill/driver.

The Milwaukee is only slightly smaller than the Bosch which I had actually thought it would be even smaller yet, side-by-side. I do like the feel of the metal chuck on the Milwaukee and it has a battery gauge, which the Bosch does not. Also I like the fact that the Milwaukee stands up on the base; for some reason the Bosch is just unbalanced enough that it can’t. The Milwaukee case is the traditional red hard plastic case while the Bosch uses a smaller soft case.  The batteries for these two lines are almost identical but obviously not compatible and the LED lights on the tools are about the same. The full spec comparison is on the previous 2410-22 vs PS30-2A post, I just though it would be nice to get some photo side-by-sides out there as well.

Milwaukee Tool Heavy Duty Super Fan

I recently had the pleasure to visit Eric at his home and see where some of the Milwaukee Tools from Ohio Power Tool end up. By day a mild-mannered CPA, after hour a man of many talents equipped with the latest Heavy Duty gear. Some of his Milwaukee tools include: Right Angle Drill, Super Sawzall, Jig Saw, 7-1/4” Circular Saw, ½” Drill, Orbital Sander, M12 Drill/Driver, V28 Hammer Drill, 2-1/4” Router Kit, Radio, M12 M-Spector, M12 Hackzall, M18 Compact Drill, M18 Impact Driver, most of the accessory kits and currently waiting on some of the new 9” Diamond Grit Sawzall Blades. While his setup was cleaned up for the visit, he does keep all the tool kits and accessory kits on the wall as you see here. Eric said it keeps everything out of the way, maximizing space and when he needs a couple tools for a project everything is right at his fingers to grab and go. He has had many tools over the years but fell in love with the Milwaukee 7-1/4” circular saw he received as a gift several years ago, really impressed with how well it stood up he bought another Milwaukee and another. Now he doesn’t even consider buying another brand if Milwaukee makes a similar tool.

Some of his recent projects include finishing the basement I was in, a real nice job by the way, adding a deck out back, finishing the garage and currently working on an IPE Wood deck at his father’s house.  He is also a bit of a mechanic and did some nice work on a 1991 Mustang 5.0 which he sold earlier this year. Another thing that really impressed me was his Ingersoll Rand compressor set up which can be used in the basement next to the workbench but he also ran a line and hookup in the garage, it is a nice system, I’m jealous.

Thanks again Eric, for letting me come over and checkout the digs. For all your Milwaukee Tool needs visit www.OhioPowerTool.com. Currently there are some amazing deals for Free Tools with the M12 & M18 lines but they end June 30th so get your orders in this weekend!

CJ Perry – Ridgid Calendar Girls 2009

An update on the Ridgid Roadshow stop for Columbus, Ohio on Friday, August 14th. Possibly the most important detail for some… Who is the Ridgid Calendar Girl that will be there? It has been confirmed CJ Perry (January/February 2009) will be at Ohio Power Tool signing free Ridgid calendars. I googled her and found her Model Mayhem profile. Apparently she is also very accomplished in all types of dance and being insanely hot is just a way to pay the bills. Below is a little about her and a youtube video of her “Reel”. We look forward to having her out to visit.

A little about myself, I am Portuguese but grew up in a little country called Latvia which is the Former Soviet Union. That is where I got my professional ballet training and danced with the Latvian National Ballet Company and a Professional Modern Dance company starting at the age of 14. At 17 I moved to NYC where I danced with Ballet Hispanico and Alvin Ailey. Major in Dance at Florida State University in Dance and Acting.

In College I started break dancing which lead me to tour and work with artist such as Keri Hilson, T.I, Rich Boy, Akon, Bow Wow and Paula Deanda.

I love modeling, singing, acting and dancing and take my career very seriously. I am very passionate about my work and I am easy to work with!

Skil 18V Lithium Ion Tool Review – 4 Tool Combo Kit 2895LI-20

In support of the recent Power Tool Drag Races (I promise no more mentions again until next year) Skil Power Tools donated a 4 Tool Lithium Ion Combo Kit which was the Grand Prize for the event. We are grateful for the support and hope they will be involved again in the future. I couldn’t help myself I had to crack the box open and give these tools a once over, just to see how well they perform.

I put them to the test building a few of the first sections of the race track. Originally the track was build for outdoor use and looked like this (below left), later we moved it indoors and took the base supports off for a more level surface on the concrete. To keep things simple we built the track in 8’ sections so all that was required was to rip the plywood and stager the 2x4 rails which were later screwed together for the race. This way after the race we could break the track back down to the 8’ sections and store it for next year.

The Skil tools had a light weight feel, plastic but still sturdy enough. There are some positive and negative trade-offs when the tools are made lighter. Obviously they become easier to manage and are less tiresome to use for extended periods which are huge advantage in the DIY market. My big concern with these tools was battery life and longevity. I my mind these Skil cordless tools are most likely going to be used by weekend warriors with periodic use and are tough enough to last for years in that environment. It would be a different story if they were in the hands of some of the companies I see on a daily basis who absolutely abuse their tools. The battery life on any tool is going to be evident from the first use and I’ve used many cordless tools intended for the DIY market and been completely unimpressed with battery performance most of the time.

The Drill/Driver (also available for purchase individually) was a pretty solid tool. Plenty of torque at 400 in/lbs to drive screws into wood and do most tasks you would want in an 18v drill/driver. It has several bit holders on the tool which I guess it’s like cup holders in a minivan, the more the merrier, honestly 1 or 2 probably would be enough. The level was also a nice feature to see on the tool. I would have liked to see a light on the tool which I’ve found to be a very helpful feature on many new drills but I also understand that it adds cost and with the really nice swivel flashlight already included in the combo kit maybe not a big selling feature.

The Circular Saw, I will be honest I have considered almost worthless in the past with most cordless combo kits intended for the DIY market. When I pulled it out of the box it was even smaller than I was expecting using 5-3/8" blades (my other cordless are 6.5”) and much lighter than I expected. I needed to cut the 4x8’ plywood into 3 equal 8’ strips for the track and once I started using it I found it actually much easier to use for that application because of the smaller blade and light weight. The smaller size blade also maximizes the battery life and is just big enough to cut 2x4, 2x6, etc. Another advantage is the lithium technology allows for the battery to run at full power until it’s almost dead, while NiCd circular saws, for the most part, you can feel the power lose almost immediately. It would be nice to see a larger lithium battery option for the Skil tools down the road to extend the saws power on larger jobs but I was pleasantly surprised by the run time for this compact saw.

Unfortunately I didn’t really get a good opportunity to fully test out the recip saw more than take it out, put the battery on and pull the trigger a few times. It as well was a pretty lightweight tool and felt like a pretty decent recip saw that would be adequate for most DIY jobs but more than that I was unable to determine. Time simply ran out on the track build and I had to put some hot glue on the Skil box, package it back up and get it ready to give away.

Overall I was impressed with the Skil 4 Tool Combo Kit and at $244 it’s a great buy for most typical home owners. The tools are also backwards compatible with their NiCd batteries as well as NiCd tools are compatible with their Lithium batteries. TJ the Grand Champion of the Power Tool Drag Races said he was also thrilled to win such an awesome prize for something he had some much fun building. Thanks again Skil Power Tools for supporting this event!!!

PTDRC – Now that was a Fun Time!

The first annual Columbus Power Tool Drag Races went off without anyone losing major limbs… Success! We also managed to have a ton of fun doing it. Typical of a first year event there was some kinks to work out and attendance wasn’t huge but overall the event went very smoothly. In total there were 10 racers and 50+ spectators but with the enthusiasm after the event you know the event is only going to grow by leaps and bounds next year and beyond.

I taught a workshop before the race on how to build one of these racers and the design I came up with was simple but actually worked very well. In just 3 hours even the most inexperienced builder had put together a racer that was able to zip down the track and even look good doing it (stock cars 1 2 3 4).

My creation “The Flying Toaster” was heavy but fast, powered by a Bosch 9” grinder motor (see video). It was 90% welded together but as build time ran out (I also helped build the track, create a stock car design & teach a class) I had to use some zip ties to hold the side guide wheels on. After the one run the ties broke and the toaster never ran the same again. Unfortunately I was unable to beat TJ’s pig and his taunting fans… I shall have my revenge next year!

There were high hopes for a few other racers including Mike’s “Little Cranky” which was definitely the most complicated design, almost 100% custom fabricated including gears and frame. The chain drive racer ended up being underpowered with the high RPM, low torque router motor.

One of the fan favorites was Alex’s “Bratzmobile Cruiser”; it actually fell apart during the first run but managed to drag its pieces parts across the finish line anyway and go on to make several more runs as is. It was a toss up weather that was the funnies run or when the Pig got Decapitated. It was a clean cut, who knew cardboard could do that.

There will be more pictures and videos coming in, check http://www.powertooldragracescolumbus.com/results.html for all the links. The local Channel 10 news was there as well and had some good coverage on TV that night, I am working to get online. Thanks you again to everyone who helped put this together from the Idea Foundry, Fuse Factory and especially to our event sponsors who donated all the fabulous prizes Ohio Power Tool, Skil Power Tools and CH Hanson.

Power Tool Drag Races...

I wish I could say I was tired of posting on the Power Tool Drag Races, which will be held tomorrow, but I’m just not. This picture came in today from another equally excited individual. Hopefully I can beat the pig(??) or whatever that is.

Sharpening Your Tools & Accessories, Just Got Easier

We are always looking for ways to save money, I don’t know about you high rollers but last year and the year before I was still trying to save money. Something tells me I’ll be that way no matter what’s going out in the real world. I recently had an interesting conversation about two new products that appeal to my frugal nature the www.worksharptools.com & www.drilldoctor.com designed for sharpening tools and accessories. I’ll be reviewing the Drill Doctor 750x & Work Sharp WS2000 w/Knife sharpener next week and let you know what my thoughts are. In the meantime I’ll leave you with their official Press Release below…

Ashland, OR -- This year, dads no longer need to throw away the dull tools and drill bits they've been saving in their shops. Everyone has them -- those tools that have been sitting in the shop unused for a few years gathering dust. Professional Tool Manufacturing has what dad needs to get those tools back to new -- Work Sharp and Drill Doctor.

"More and more of our customers are revisiting the classic skills and techniques of the past in order to save money," said Matthew Bernard, Director of Marketing, Professional Tool Manufacturing. "But sharpening tools by hand is a challenging skill to master. Rather than buying new lawn mower blades and new gardening tools, for example, these tools can be sharpened, maintained and be made better than new -- and you can do it yourself with the Work Sharp and the Drill Doctor."

Drill bits, chisels, knives and garden sheers get used often and can quickly get dull, dirty and used. But that doesn't mean it's time to buy something new. Most tools can quickly and easily be resharpened, refurbished and reused --- usually quicker than the time to would take to head to the local hardware store for a replacement.

"As people look to save money, they should be aware that most of their tools are in great condition, but might need a little TLC to work like new again. That's where our tools shine," offered Bernard.

The Drill Doctor can re-sharpen dull drill bits in a matter of a minute or two, while the Work Sharp is able to sharpen most of the other tools using an innovative horizontal grinding surface. Work Sharp has just introduced 2 new wheels -- a surface conditioning wheel which offers quick removal of rust, dirt, paint and a variety of other coatings and a polishing wheel which makes a mirror finish.

Recently, the Work Sharp added a knife sharpening accessory which allows you to quickly and easily sharpen your knives in addition to your other tools. Using patented flexible belt technology, the Work Sharp can sharpen straight knives as well as serrated and curved knives which can be hard to sharpen using other methods.

Ridgid 65S Stainless Steel 1/4"-2 5/8" Tube Cutter 31803

The new 65S stainless steel tubing cutter from Ridgid can handle from ¼ - 2 5/8” stainless tube. This cutter has been designed specifically for stainless so it’s built to do the tough cutting.  Available now from Ohio Power Tool the 65S (Ridgid 31803) is on sale for $62.92. This is a great addition to the hand tubing cutters, featuring similar improvements as the very popular 35S (Ridgid 29963) stainless steel tubing cutter that can handle ¼ - 1 3/8” tubing. Official Ridgid release info below.

RIDGID is proud to continue its tradition of delivering the most innovative products in the market by introducing the 65S Quick-Acting Tubing Cutter. The 65S has been designed to optimize cutting performance on Stainless Steel Tube and build on our successful line of cutters for a wide variety of pipe, tube types and sizes.

The 65S features six individual bearings that replace traditional rollers and a specially-designed heavy duty cutter wheel with bearings to create a smoother, faster cut. The oversized, easy-to-grip, X-CEL® knob is especially helpful for easier and quicker adjustments while cutting tube. This tool works for you as it fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, while rotating the cutter around the tube, making a more precise cut. Lastly, the X-CEL wheel pin means a quick and easy, no-tools-required wheel change on the job site.

New M12 LED Work Light 49-24-0146

Another addition the ever expanding Milwaukee M12 Tool line is the LED work light 49-24-0146 ($39). The xenon incandescent M12 work light 49-24-0145 ($19) will still be available, you will simply now have a choice between the two. Both models share a similar design with 90 degree movable head and magnet for hands free work. The new LED M12 is promising double the run of the traditional M12 flashlight however it is also packing double the price. The battery is an LEDs so traditionally lasts 10x longer as well as giving a more natural white light (5600K).

It’s a tough call price vs runtime, you will need to make that decision for your own but I am happy we at least now have the option. Check out all the Milwaukee M12 tools at Ohio Power Tool.

Promote Your Business while Reading Blogs

You're here reading our posts and hopefully even getting some knowledge out of it. Did you know you can also promote your business? If you have a website it’s pretty simple, feel free to take advantage. See at the bottom of each post where it says comments, simply click that, put the name of your business in the “name” field, then put your web address in and add a comment that is, on topic, somewhat knowledgeable and/or entertaining. The name becomes a link to your website and if people are interested they will click it. The search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc) also pick these up as links to your website and you could actually rank higher simply by commenting on other people's blogs and forums you are already reading.

Please do not put your links directly in the comment field or try and use the comment field as a way to promote your business, that is spam. People are smart enough if your name/link is Beachy Barns & Sheds or Chesrown Cadillac GMC everyone is going to have an idea of what you do. If you don’t have a website, you could also link to a Facebook or Twitter page if you have one. Over time it should help get your name out there and build links without taking much extra time from what you are already doing, given you are already reading this blog. We really want to see your business be successful, mostly so you can buy more tools from Ohio Power Tool but none the less we will do whatever we can to help.

P.S. it can take a little while for the comment to pass through the spam filter, don't worry they will go live shortly provided it's not spam.

Milwaukee M12 Drill/Driver 2410-22 vs Bosch 12V PS30-2A

The 3/8” Drill/Driver has been a long awaited addition to the Milwaukee M12 line. The 2410-22 ($149) comes with 2410 tool, (2) M12 batteries, charger & case but the drill/driver tool is also available as 2410-20 ($98) which is just the tool by itself. The closest competition for the new drill/driver would be the Bosch 12V Max PS30-2A ($139) which has been out for over a year and is currently leading the 12V compact drill/driver market. Milwaukee is trying hard to improve upon the already successful PS30 design and create a compelling reason to pick their compact drill over anyone else.

Milwaukee M12 2410-22
No Load Speed (2 speed): 0-400/0-1,500 RPM
Torque: 250 in-lbs
Single Sleeve: Metal
Weight: 2.5 lbs
Length: 7-3/8”

Bosch 12V Max PS30-2A
No Load Speed (2 speed): 0-400/0-1,100 RPM
Torque: 220 in-lbs
Single Sleeve: Plastic
Weight: 2.4 lbs
Length: 8-1/2”

In comparing the stats you can see how Milwaukee has worked to build a better tool… at least when it comes to the numbers. Obviously with an extra year of development time they are going to make it faster with more torque. It is also awesome to see that the M12 is over an inch shorter than the Bosch, making it even easier to carry in the tool belt. Adding the metal sleeve on this tool also makes me happy and think back to the introduction of the first generation Bosch PS20 when the tough sell was convincing people such a small tool had a place among professional (see: These Ain’t No Kids Toys 8/23/2007). Clearly we have come a long way and with Milwaukee adding so many M12 tools aimed specifically at Plumbers & Electricians I think everyone has embraced the idea 12 volt tools defiantly have their place among the pros.

If you have any questions about any of the Milwaukee M12 or Bosch 12V Max tools feel free to email sales@ohiopowertool.com or call 800-242-4424. Once I get my hands on the Milwaukee M12 2410-22 we can do a more hands on comparison of the two different models and see if the Milwaukee stands out as much as the stats might indicate. Stay tuned.

Bosch Mid-Range Litheon Cordless Impactors

The 18V Litheon Bosch Impactor hex drivers are available now, with several other square drive 14V & 18V Impactors available shortly. As indicated in the title these impact drivers would be considered mid-range, which means high RPM & BPM with enough torque to do most work typical for 3/8” or ½” impact guns. We will most likely see High Torque Litheon cordless models down the road as well.

I recently got the chance to test the Bosch 18v Impactor Driver along with the 2 leading competitors (Makita & DeWalt) cordless Impact Drivers. One feature that continues to stand out in my mind was the electronic cell & motor protection which we got to see in action during the stress test. The test went like this, several extremely large bolts were lined up that none of the drivers could possibly move; then we got to try and drive the bolts with each tool. None of them could move the bolts and after a few seconds one of the competitor’s impacts started smoking and almost caught on fire. Another which had “protection” simply turned off and would not come back on. It turns out you need to find the charger and recharge the battery to get it to work again. Not very convenient if you are on the jobsite. The Bosch Impactor turned off when the electronic protection kicked on but a few seconds later it was back, working great, no fussing around. Read the full press release on all 8 versions of the Impactors Drivers & Wrenches below.

Bosch Power Tools and Accessories made a splash this week with the introduction of six new Impactor drivers and wrenches built around its innovative 18V and 14V Litheon cordless platforms. Immediately, Bosch’s new Impactors became the market leaders in speed, size and run time. Operating at up to 2,800 RPM and delivering up to 3,200 BPM, Bosch’s new Impactors are up to 27 percent faster than comparable cordless impact drivers and impact wrenches. In the demanding metal fastening, lag bolt and serial screw driving applications where impact tools live, the increase in speed means a significant boost to productivity. The Bosch 25618 18V Litheon Impactor Driver, for example, is capable of driving a 3” all-purpose screw into a pressure treated 4x4 in about 1 second. The same tool can drive a 3” x ¼” lag bolt into a pressure treated 4x4 in less than 4 seconds. In addition to outstanding speed and power, Bosch’s new Impactors are the most compact in their class. The 25618 has a head length of only 5.7 inches and is up to 25 percent lighter and 25 percent shorter (from nose to back of tool) than the competition. It also features an ergonomic handle grip designed to improve control and reduce fatigue in long run applications. All of these traits add up to a tool that is both more maneuverable, for tight spaces, and more comfortable, for all-day use.

Speed and maneuverability are only as important as the battery system behind them, however. In the case of Bosch’s new Litheon-powered Impactors, the battery system delivers – and then some. The 18V Litheon 25618 is capable of driving up to 150 3”x1/4” lag bolts between charges. What about battery lifespan? Bosch’s 18V Litheon FatPack batteries deliver up to twice the life of competitors’ batteries.

Additional advantages of the Bosch Litheon system are the Flexible Power System (FPS), which allows users to choose either the SlimPack battery, for lightest weight, or FatPack, for longest run time. Bosch’s patented Electronic Cell and Motor Protection, meanwhile, protects both the battery and the tool by preventing the three main causes of battery failure – overheating, overloading and deep discharging.

Bosch’s new Impactor family includes the following tools:

18 Volts
25618-01 Impactor Driver 1/4 Hex (2 FatPack)
25618-02 Impactor Driver 1/4 Hex (2 SlimPack)
24618-01 Impactor Wrench ½ Square (2 FatPack)
IWH181-01 Impactor Wrench 3/8 Square (2 FatPack)

14 Volts
25614-01 Impactor Driver 1/4 Hex (2 FatPack)
25614-02 Impactor Driver 1/4 Hex (2 SlimPack)
24614-01 Impactor Wrench ½ Square (2 FatPack)
IWH141-01 Impactor Wrench 3/8 Square (2 FatPack)

As with all Bosch Litheon cordless products, Bosch backs the platform with the industry’s best cordless system protection plan - the Provantage 3-year Tool Protection Plan and 2-year battery replacement plan. All of Bosch’s new Impactors come complete with a charger, belt clip and case.

Father’s Day Power Tool Gift Ideas - June 21, 2009

Father’s day is coming up quickly, just a few Sundays from now on June 21st. Here are a few suggestions for great power tool gift ideas. I hate to keep beating the same old drum but the Bosch and Dremel oscillating tools have proven to be extremely popular gifts and would be perfect for such a wide range of dads out there. Priced between $99-199 they are accommodating for most budgets and are so versatile it’s great for anyone from an occasional handyman to a professional contractor. If he already has one of these tools he may need some more accessories; while these kits do come with the basics there are many additional attachments for a wide range of different jobs. The accessories for these tools are not available at most of the home center depot stores even though they may carry the tools. Order online and have them in between 1-4 days.

Below are several models of Oscillating Tools as well as some other great deals on professional power tools your father will certainly be happy to put in the tool box. You can visit Ohio Power Tool for thousands of different power tools or if you need additional help feel free to call the experts at 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com.
