Promote Your Business while Reading Blogs

You're here reading our posts and hopefully even getting some knowledge out of it. Did you know you can also promote your business? If you have a website it’s pretty simple, feel free to take advantage. See at the bottom of each post where it says comments, simply click that, put the name of your business in the “name” field, then put your web address in and add a comment that is, on topic, somewhat knowledgeable and/or entertaining. The name becomes a link to your website and if people are interested they will click it. The search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc) also pick these up as links to your website and you could actually rank higher simply by commenting on other people's blogs and forums you are already reading.

Please do not put your links directly in the comment field or try and use the comment field as a way to promote your business, that is spam. People are smart enough if your name/link is Beachy Barns & Sheds or Chesrown Cadillac GMC everyone is going to have an idea of what you do. If you don’t have a website, you could also link to a Facebook or Twitter page if you have one. Over time it should help get your name out there and build links without taking much extra time from what you are already doing, given you are already reading this blog. We really want to see your business be successful, mostly so you can buy more tools from Ohio Power Tool but none the less we will do whatever we can to help.

P.S. it can take a little while for the comment to pass through the spam filter, don't worry they will go live shortly provided it's not spam.

Actually, the search engines do NOT pick up any name links constructed as part of a comment.

Most blogging software packages add "no follow" tags to the URLs to ensure that the links remain transparent to search engines.

In other words, including your URL when commenting will NOT help raise your page rank.

Still, it's a good idea. I like commenting b/c I like writing and sharing my opinions (which is why I write for ToolGuyd), and similarly enjoy reading comments for the insight and opinions they provide.

In my opinion, comments are blog posts are great. BUT, they're only great if they're relevant and written with the intent to share experience, information, and opinions. Nobody likes to read comments written by business reps who are only looking to advertise and promote themselves.

No comments are better than 20 generic "nice post, great blog" copy-paste comments.

You are right, there are often "nofollow" attributes in the comment fields which do discount the links for search engines however it’s still an all around good idea to put the links in. I comment on other people’s posts all the time and always write to people, never worry about the search engines but I figure it can only help that as well.

If you're only doing it for SEO then it will not be worth your time (I believe). There are more productive ways to increase your PR and backlinks. The COPTOOL site is one of the few where nofollow isn't implemented for comments.

They really do seem want to build our businesses, which results in more money to buy more toys, I mean tools. As long as comments are appropriate and relevant I think your internet "reputation" will grow (positively).

Great article Jay!
