New Bosch GLL2-40 Compact Self-Leveling Line Laser

Bosch has added another new line laser, the GLL2-40 ($149, Ohio Power Tool) which joins the ranks with their 4 other popular line lasers. The GLL3-80 ($499, Ohio Power Tool) has really become the crown jewel of interior layouts with its 6 cross points there is alway a reference point close by but it can be a little pricy for the occasional user.

The new GLL2-40 is certainly the more cost effective but still a very high quality accurate unit for interior work. It is compact enough to be worn in the provided belt pouch and features several mounting options including 5/8-11, ¼-20 and magnets on front and bottom. The laser can also be adjusted on the mount so it is very simple to get into almost any position.

Check out all the Bosch Lasers & Measuring Tools at Ohio Power Tool 800-242-4424. For more details on the GLL2-40 read the full Bosch press release below.

MOUNT PROSPECT, ILL. – The Bosch GLL2-40 is easy-to-use, accurate and durable, making it the ideal cross-line laser for all professional interior jobsites up to 30-feet. It offers superior versatility by projecting lines independently or together for a wide array of building construction leveling and alignment applications. The GLL2-40 can be used for various applications such as evenly placing electrical outlets to installing cabinetry or chair rail. Single button operation means easily selecting horizontal, vertical, cross line or manual mode operation.

The Smart Pendulum Leveling System locks the pendulum when the GLL2-40 is switched off, allowing for protection during transport to ensure precision accuracy for every use. A robust over-molded construction provides optimal grip. The over-mold construction coupled with the recessed window also ensures water and dust protection.

Projecting crisp, clear lines up to 30-feet and with 1/8-inch accuracy, the GLL2-40 offers full-size advantages in a compact package. At a convenient eight-ounce weight, the GLL2-40 is less than two inches wide and less than four inches in length and in height.

This lightweight cross-line laser includes a detachable floor and magnetic mount which allows full rotation for added versatility. The mount is also equipped with a convenient ¼-20-inch or 5/8-11-inch tripod mounting thread for additional mounting options.

Porter Cable 23ga Nailer PIN138 & Compressor C2004 – Review

In the interest of full disclosure this is the first time we really have spend any significant amount of time with a pin nailer. Previously we had thought of an 18ga brad nailer more as the go to finishing tool for molding, trims and regular finishing. The pin nailer, in our head, seemed more for decorative accents or craft projects.

After some research and using the Porter Cable PIN138 ($136, Amazon) a couple of times we are starting to feel pretty stupid for that kind of thinking. Similar to how we felt the first few times we used an impact driver instead of a traditional drill several years back. Now we are curious just what all this little pinner is capable of, in chatting with some folks in different construction forums they were discussing techniques of using liquid nail and pins (more to secure while the adhesive dries) to install crown molding. That seems pretty optimistic but they are having success with it and no need to go back and fill holes.

Out of the Box

The case on the pin nailer is a very nice quality. Inside we were pleasantly surprised to see safety glasses and 2000 1” pins along with the tiny nail gun. The gun itself feels very well constructed even though it was extremely light weight. A few features on the gun that we liked at first glance were onboard hex key and backup no mar tip. The pin magazine is easy to open and add pins varying in size from 5/8” to 1-3/8”.

The Porter Cable compressor C2004 ($199, Amazon) at first glance does look more compact than other pancake units we have used, but maybe it was just the marketing doing its job which claims 15% lighter and 20% more compact. Two ¼” quick connects, nice large gauges, cord storage, decent length of air hose and easy to carry handle all lead to a very good first impression. Both the compressor and pinner highlighted the “Maintenance-Free” features which are also great as long as it doesn’t take away from the overall life of the tool.

Performance

We were pleasantly surprised just how accurate it was to place the pins, even with the no mar cap it was very easy to line up the pins on single pencil marks. With more practice it would become second nature to tuck these pins into molding grooves or just about anywhere. The pinner also does not require the tip to be compressed to fire (just a second safety triggers) so be careful, the temptation to shoot things John Wayne style is great but should never be done. We found the belt clip on the gun to be unnecessary but could see it being handy if you were on a ladder. Also it is very easily removed with the attached hex key. After several hundred pins we still couldn’t get a jam but if it should happen we found the removal plate easy enough to take off. We are still amazed at how small the mark is, how little it manipulates the surrounding material and how well it holds work together.

The pancake compressor performed very well with this tiny nailer as we would expect, even when firing repeatedly to purposefully try and exhaust the reserves it was able to keep up. For a single user it can easily handle anything this pin nailer can throw at it, two users our though is it would still be very capable. Of course we had to give it a better test than that so we got out the DeWalt framing nailer ($212, Amazon) to see how it would keep up. For a pro rapidly framing a house it would obviously be underpowered but for smaller remodel type jobs we may reach for this compressor over the wheelbarrow we have at the shop. Definitely able to provide enough power to drive the large nails, very portable and it can keep up at a pretty respectable pace. It was also fairly quiet, claiming 35% quiter, although not sure if that is really compared too.

Conclusion

Like we said this was our first chance to really get into it with a pin nailer and while we are extremely happy with its performance we can’t speak to how it holds up to the competitors, however our good friend Marc at Home Fixated recently did a Pin Nailer challenge, Say Hello to My Little Friends you may want to checkout. Some of the other high end pinners can do up to 2” pin and perhaps we need to try one out before we speak to how useful this would be. We were more than thrilled using the 1” pins and the Porter Cable can handle up to 1-3/8” so it seems more than adequate for most tasks, larger than that we would still be more comfortable stepping up to an 18ga nail. Read the full Porter Cable press release below.

TOWSON, Md. – PORTER-CABLE announced today the first ever maintenance-free pin nailer with its new 23GA, 1-3/8” Pin Nailer Kit (model PIN138), offering long life, consistent performance and innovative on-board features. The PIN138 meets the needs of professionals and serious woodworkers who are looking for superior holding power while keeping nail visibility to a minimum. The PORTER-CABLE pin nailer fastens materials that would normally split using larger tools, providing greater flexibility and time-savings on projects.

Designed with a “Maintenance-Free Long Life”® motor, the new 23GA, 1-3/8” Pin Nailer Kit requires no oil to be added to the tool. The motor utilizes a dual-stack ring system where the outer ring is designed to minimize internal friction, resulting in longer tool life. “With the ‘Maintenance-Free Long Life’® motor of the PIN138, there is no guessing how much oil needs to be added to the pin nailer,” said Jorge Silveira, product manager for PORTER-CABLE. “Unlike all other pin nailers on the market, the PIN138 reduces the possibility of work surface oil contamination and promotes hassle-free tool operation.”

The consistent power and penetration of the PIN138 is delivered through an internal piston catch that holds the piston-driver assembly at the highest position in the cylinder, resulting in maximum power on each shot and ensuring accurate nail setting. “The PIN138 is designed to counter-sink a 1-3/8” nail into hard materials like Oak,” said Silveira.

The PIN138 also provides the option of using headless and slight headed 23GA pin nails from 5/8" to 1-3/8" in length. “The ability to utilize both nails gives the user a choice of keeping nail hole size to a minimum by using headless pin nails or maximize holding power by using the slight head pin nails,” said Silveira. “With the increased holding power you get from slight headed pin nails, there are now even more applications to use your pin nailer.” Either type of pin nail will save you time by reducing the need for clamping on a particular project or eliminating the need to fill holes due to their extremely small size.

Featuring a dry-fire lock-out, the PIN138 will not allow users to fire the tool when there are no nails remaining in the tool. The dry-fire lock-out feature eliminates witness marks (empty nail holes in the material). In addition, a low nail indicator is provided on the outside of the side-loading magazine to alert when nails are running low. For added convenience, the PIN138 holds 130 pin nails and automatically adjusts to different fastener lengths to provide easier loading and has fewer problems with pin nails that are out of spec.

The PIN138 includes additional features that further protect your work surface from being damaged. The tool comes equipped with a rear exhaust, which directs any potential moisture and contaminates away from the work surface. The PIN138 is designed with a narrow nose for improved visibility and features a removable non- marring tip that eliminates wood indentations. An extra non-marring tip is provided and stored on the tool. Plus, a rubberized PORTER-CABLE logo on the side of the tool provides soft contact if the tool were laid on the work surface.

Weighing only 2.2 pounds, the PIN138 still delivers durability with its aluminum body and magazine construction. The reversible belt clip allows the user to keep the tool by their side for when it is needed. Ideal for cabinet makers, cabinet installers, furniture builders and mantle builders, the PIN138 is appropriate for light fastening and clamping applications including, but not limited to, small trim and small decorative moldings, cabinet crown molding, raised panel doors, rope and bead molding, mantle building and wood joining.

The PORTER-CABLE 23GA, 1-3/8” Pin Nailer Kit includes the pin nailer, 2000 headless pin nails, a 1/4” plug with cap, a wrench for internal access and a carrying case. It is backed by a three-year limited warranty and includes one year of free service and a ninety-day money back guarantee.

BeThePro.com - Construction Industry News Site from Bosch

Last summer Bosch Tools announced they were sponsoring a new website for “Joe the Pro” and that Joe himself would be using the website and social media as well as traveling around to tradeshows to educate users on better ways to do common jobsite tasks with Bosch Accessories. In the past year we can say for certain there has definitely been one very successful attribute of the site, giving away FREE Bosch Multi-tool adaptors and OIS blades. You can still take advantage of the deal, if you have not already HERE but don’t forget the secret promo code OISC10.

After only 1 year the site is getting an update with more focus on the construction industry as a whole with emphasis on more education. The new site www.BeThePro.com has also brought in other professionals so Joe doesn’t have to do all the heavy lifting on his own. Perhaps he is spending more time to prepare for a title fight against Milwaukee’s faceman Cain Velasquez as matched up here… but probably not.  See the full BeThePro.com press release below.

Mt. Prospect, Ill., – Joe the Pro and his popular blog, Boschjoethepro.com, are on the move to a new address – bethepro.com.  The construction industry blog, sponsored by Bosch, has taken on a new, easy-to-use roll format and includes new capabilities for users, including a line-up of guest contributors and a product promotions space.

Build a Truck Bed Sliding Tool Rack - Fine Homebuilding

This looked like a pretty nice, easy to do project that might make a lot of sense for those guys with tons of tools & supplies in their truck bed. We got it from FineHomebuilding.com where you can find plenty more "There's a Better Way" short videos like it.

Irwin Vise-Grip vs CH Hanson Automatic 10” Locking Pliers

From time to time here at Coptool World Headquarter we receive some interesting marketing for new power tools, accessories and hand tools. From miniature “Heavy Metal” guitars to Sawzall blades with our name on them we do enjoy a little flair when launching a new product. CH Hanson sent us a nice simple package which we thought was very well put together, it included their 10” Automatic 10CJ pliers as well as “The Original” 10” Irwin 10WR in addition to a stopwatch and steel plate with 2 nuts welded to it. The message was 7x faster, 2x stronger and 100% easier. We also threw another horse in the race with the latest vise-grip from Irwin 10CR which has slightly different grip geometry but for the most part very similar, here are our thoughts.

Easy of Operation

We are not exactly sure how you judge “100% easier” but we gave it our best shot. The Hanson 10CJ has a nice larger back grip which was more comfortable however the front leg has to stick out very far when gripping an item and with thinner material pressure needs to be applied when the leg is still mostly extended. For fatter items it is actually easier to use these pliers. The latest Irwin 10CR definitely had the most comfortable grip with thick blue padding although not sure that would hold up very long when welding or plasma cutting.

The Hanson 10CJ did have an advantage when it came to tensioning with the “set & forget” adjustment you can get the same tension each time on multiple diameter work piece unlike either of the Irwin vise-grips with the knobs.

The Hanson 10CJ release lever with red rubber tip was also an improvement from the Irwin 10WR original but the “Fast Release” on the new Irwin 10CR worked the best without any chance of pinching your skin.

Holding Strength

The Hanson 10CJ Automatic claims 2x holding, while the new Irwin 10CR Fast Release claims 3x holding, we are assuming in both cases the baseline would be “The Original”. When we tested them all 3 did a terrific job, in our 20+ years of using vise-clamps not sure there have been too many times we thought, if only this vise-grip had a little more holding power. The new Irwin attributes the added holding power to a slight change in direction of the clamping motion at the very last second where it goes straight out (see pic above). This would mean to fail the momentum would first need to push in an unnatural way.

Speed of Clamping

This is really the main selling point of the new Hanson Automatic and we have got to say it does a very nice job adjusting to radically different sizes almost instantaneously. Both Irwin vise-grips use the screw adjustment which took several times longer to adjust. The downside, as we mentioned before, is the moving leg on the Hanson does come out further which does make it slightly hard to initially clamp on, even with our large hands.

Overall

The Hanson Automatic definitely was a nice tool, we were very big fans of how the tension can be set into position and will be the same each time. If the tension is not set correctly or under tension, this will certainly effect overall performance and could be dangerous in some cases. The one question we could not answer would be how well will the additional mechanisms used for the Hanson Automatic holds up over time? The Original Irwin are the most commonly used locking pliers ever because they have proven itself over time in very difficult work conditions; it might be a tough sell to get guys to switch from a product that has been so dependable. Our initial thoughts however on the durability of the Hanson is that these are also very sturdy and well built.

Twin Bosch 18V Drill/Driver Powered Vehicle “EX”

We have seen a few drill/driver powered bikes in our day but this new vehicle creation is pretty unique, even for power tool driven mobility. Check out the Bosch twin 18V cordless drill powered Vehicle EX. Another really cool part is the entire process was documented and shared.

The creator, Nil Ferber has a whole website for his unique creation and if the premonition from the movie “Water World” ever come true and the entire earth floods, Nil will be just fine chillin on his Landannahme raft creation.

Recording Video to Laptop with a Ridgid SeeSnake Micro

We are now on the third generation of the Ridgid SeeSnake Micro ($224, Ohio Power Tool) and one question remains very prevalent for all 3 generations; “can I record video onto my laptop”. Yes, you can however first you should probably ask yourself how often you will need to be capturing video. If you plan to capture video every time you use the camera it would definitely be advantageous to use one of the handheld recording devices with a built in SD card like the Ridgid Micro Explorer ($697, Ohio Power Tool) that you can simply transfer over later. If you think it might just be every once in a while the SeeSnake Micro may work very well for you.

To record video using the Ridgid SeeSnake Micro, it is not as easy out of the box as you might hope. The video our cable goes to a yellow video RCA cable. This works fine if you have one of the Ridgid SeeSnake Monitors or a shoulder mounted VHS camcorder from 1987. It will be pretty hard to find a laptop with an RCA video-in however but don’t worry there are many ways to convert the analog signal. One such way is to use an inexpensive cable like this USB 2.0 Audio/Video Capture Cable ($8.74, Amazon) or another option might be to convert down to Micro USB ($2.95, Amazon) and record onto a digital camcorder. If you don’t want to mess with it, another good option would be to bring the provided SeeSnake RCA cord into any Micro Center and have one the nice people there help you out.

Build a Cigar Box MIDI Controller for Max/MSP

It’s interesting being a part of a community workshop; all day long the message board is a flicker with posts and random comments from folks offering up materials and other interesting stuff. Such as, does someone want 30 cigar boxes? Then a few days later a project like this pops up on adafruit.com on how to “Build a Cigar Box MIDI Controller” and you say wait a minute I recognize that laser cutter.

A couple of members came together from the workshop to complete this project and it came out very nice. The guys from Highly Liquid have their offices in the building so not a big surprise, see the full “How To” with videos here. We are not huge homebrew music buffs but we still enjoy checking out their latest creations.

As for tonight, we are headed to the Columbus Idea Foundry to take part in some competitive lock picking with the local chapter of LockSport, then perhaps do a little light woodworking and maybe enjoy a few beers. It is truly a magical place; we would highly recommend a membership.

Johnson's Magnetic Torpedo Level for Welding 1404-1000

We have been pretty impressed with the depth and innovation of the new levels coming from Johnson Level & Tool. The Glow-View is one such innovative feature which lights up the bubbles (no batteries required) on several of their new units. Most recently they launched a new 10” Welder’s Level, which is able to handle the high temperatures associated with welding work surfaces thanks the all cast aluminum frame and three v-groove magnets. This unit however does not incorporate the Glow-View feature, our assumption being the glow material may melt under high heat, but it does feature their SurrondView technology for maximizing reflective light in dim work areas. Check out the 1404-1000 Welder’s Torpedo Level if you are in the market for a really tough level. Read the full Johnson Press Release below.

MEQUON, WI, Johnson Level & Tool, leader in spirit levels and laser levels, has expanded its level offering again with the introduction of a 10-inch magnetic, cast aluminum torpedo level.

The new 1404-1000 Magnetic Welder's Torpedo Level is made of a solid cast aluminum frame, with three high powered v-groove magnets embedded in the gauging edge.  The level features Johnson Level's SurroundView® vial system which reflects ambient light for easy reading in dimly lit work environments and durable precision block vials that will not crack, leak or fade.  The block vials read plumb, level and 45 degrees. "We designed this level to be effective on 'hot jobs', or environments where a welder works on a daily basis.  The solid cast aluminum frame and rare earth magnets stick to ferrous metals while high temperature welding is taking place." said Jeff Johnson, Director of Marketing at Johnson Level.

The Welder's Torpedo Level is one of 15 torpedo levels offered by Johnson Level.  Other torpedo levels include features such as Multi-Pitch® vials which read in 1/8-inch increments, Glow-View® vial systems which glow-in-the-dark, and top-read torpedo levels which are more easily read at different angles.  All Johnson levels come with a lifetime manufacturer's warranty on accuracy.

Contractor’s Tool Source Magazine

We get our fair share of tool & construction magazines each month but even if you are a big tool buff this maybe one magazine that slipped by, but fear not as everything else these day the whole thing is available online, cover to cover. There were a few very interesting stories in this month’s edition including a feature on building a power plant, flap wheels and a really good story about fighting silica dust exposure, with some very revealing statisitics on how much dust is produced by different tool usages. If any of that sounds interesting to you, here is the current issue.

New Bosch Wall Scanner / Stud Finder GMS120

If you have had any experience with traditional stud finders or the Bosch DMD4k (GMS120 predecessor) you may have found the results to be less that 100% accurate. In standard construction it probably works fine but on remodel jobs or in old homes with various materials if you are not confident in the results how useful is the tool going to be. The Bosch GMS120 ($69, Ohio Power Tool) adds new technology and additional levels of on screen accuracy that should provide more confidence that you have truly centered on the wood stud, wires, copper tube or rebar. Read this great article from Fine Homebuilding on How It Works. It really explains a lot on how this Wall Scanner operates. Also our friend Neil, from the UK based Toolstop blog, does a nice job in the video below highlighting the operations way better than we could by rambling on here.

Who Knew So Much Science Went into Work Pants – Blaklader

Commonly there are two types of work pants, your everyday jeans that get a little past "casual" and new work pant made from a thicker more sturdy material, like you find with Carhartt pants. The folk at Blaklader (forgive us for not making the squiggles over the As) have taken the professional work pant to an entirely new level. We got a pair of the Bantam Pants with Utility Pockets to test out and had found we were very surprised, frankly how many little details went into to making these work pants.

Our thoughts before we received the Blakladers: Work pants with knee pads, that’s pretty cool. Is the Bantam with 8oz cotton going to be heavy duty enough for me or do I need the Heavy Workers we saw on the guys at the BrickLayer 500? Do these Swedish guys seriously sell work Kilts?

Once we received the Blakladers: The Bantam 8oz ($44, Amazon) is definitely a heavy duty work pant, the Brawny 12oz ($54, Amazon) would be really serious, probably alright for outdoors work in the winter and the Heavy Worker 12oz ($55, Amazon) poly-blend would feel like cardboard the first few wears and probably best suited for masonry and other trades in seriously abusive environments. Yes, they do sell utility kilts, but not very many, more just to be funny we think. These pants have many more features than just knee pads and triple stitching that make them them a serious work pant. We highlighted some of the features below.

Pant Pockets: How do you improve a pocket, was our first thought. All the pockets are folded at the bottom and then sew over which means at the bottom of the pocket there is no seem just folded material which is much stronger. The front pockets also are sewn on the outside of the leg material so they are heavy duty cotton all the way around, not flimsy white cotton you find in your regular jean pockets. The back pockets are lined with Cordura (a synthetic fabric from DuPont, 10x stronger than cotton), this feature really blew us away because clearly it raised their production cost but nobody notices it before they buy them. They still felt it was important for the longevity of the pants and that attention to detail is very impressive and not lost on us at all.

Utility Pockets: The front pockets are optional and would be unnecessary if you preferred using a tool belt or one of their tool vests. The pockets are a good size and perfect for wire nuts or even nails and screws. Similar though went into these pockets with no seem at the bottom and 45 degree cuts on the corners to make it easier to reach those last few screws. The utility pockets also fit nicely inside the regular front pockets so when the work day is done and it’s time to catch happy hour they look more like regular pants.

Leg Pockets & Tool Holders: Again a lot of thought went into these side pockets, the right hand tool pocket (ideal for pliers or screwdrivers) is made with a flap so you are not jabbing yourself in the leg when you knee. The left hand security pockets have a button and Velcro and are fit an iPhone very nicely. Even the hammer is made from a webbing material that surly is not going to break easily.

Knee Pads: This was the first feature we noticed about these pants and still probably the most useful. The knee pad pockets are again made of the super strong Cordura material to ensure long life. They actually insert from the bottom which makes them a little harder to put in and take out after the work day (when wearing them) but they do this to ensure no debris ever gets into the pocket which could come in between the pad and knee, making for an uncomfortable situation. The “light duty” (don’t be fooled by the name) knee pads themselves are very comfortable for kneeing. The light duty indicates not for 40 hour/week use like the “heavy duty” pads. For use several times a day on smaller jobs these pads provide more than adequate comfort in our opinion.

Overall: Clearly our thought, if it wasn’t clear, is these are very nice work pants. It was really the little details that would otherwise go unnoticed that impressed us the most. Did we mention the lifetime warranty on stitching? Apparently these guys really stand behind their pants. On their website it says “Every pocket, seam, button and fabric must be a beacon of functionality.” and after wear them for a few weeks we are believers they actually mean it. More pictures in this photo album.

New Milwaukee M18 5-3/8” Metal Cutting Circular Saw 2682-22

Last summer we were lucky enough to get to test out this new metal cutting circular saw 2682-22 ($349, Ohio Power Tool) and while it was still in its prototype form it was very impressive. For such a compact light weight tool it was very powerful for cutting through metal strut, threaded rods, pipe and others metals with up to a 2” clearance. Battery life is reported at 200 cuts per charge on the new Red Lithium XC batteries, up to 40% longer than the competition. Cutting visibility is also very well thought out thanks to the clear cutting window and LED light. While we probably won’t see one in every home in America this saw definitely has a place among several professional trades, and it appear Milwaukee remains committed to developing new products for those trades specifically.

Checkout all the Milwaukee M18 Tools at Ohio Power Tool and for more info on the Milwaukee Metal Cutting Saw 2682-22 check out the video below and the official Milwaukee press release below that.

Duo-Fast Cordless Roofing Nailer DFCR175C, 2011 Best New Product

If you have ever been around a roofing crew setting up in the morning for a full day of installing a new roof you know there is a lot of prep work that goes into it. Setting up compressors, running air hoses, getting supplies up to the roof but when all is in place it’s like a symphony of rapid bump-fireing from a handful of roofers. This cordless gun will not replace those roofing nailers however, at 2 nails a second with a trigger pull required for each to fire it is simply too slow to join the orchestra.

So who will use this new cordless roofing nail gun? This is still a gun for the pros, but the main benefit it offers is the lack of setting up a compressor and running air hoses. For smaller jobs like a roofing repair, skylight or vent installation this gun is ideal, simply grab and go. The nail & fuel cells for the gun are sold in Roofer’s Choice kits that include a fuel cell and 6 coils of nails (720) which is just enough to do about 200 sq ft of roofing.

Check out this short video from Rob at www.aconcordcarpenter.com to get a better idea of size and how easy it is to handle. For more in-depth information read the official press release below the video.

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Roof repair pros were already learning about the incredible time-saving benefits of the world's first Fuel Powered Cordless Roofing Nailer System. Now, the critics are chiming in, and early returns indicate the Model DFCR175C Cordless Roofing Nailer from Duo-Fast Construction is a winner. During last month’s International Roofing Expo (IRE) in Las Vegas, a panel of judges chose Duo-Fast’s system as one of only three honored as “Best New Products” within the IRE’s 2011 Product Showcase. “The accolades are nice, but we’re more excited that everyone who works with the new cordless system has the same experience we did when we were doing field testing last year,” says Craig Christiansen, Duo-Fast’s market manager for Roofing & Exterior Products. “A single worker can perform repairs, pack up and get back into his truck in the time it takes a typical two-person crew just to set up a pneumatic system. That represents a phenomenal increase in speed and profitability on the job.”

The revolutionary tool is easy to use, drives two nails per second and holds 120 nails per coil. Faster than hand nailing and more precise than pneumatic nailers, Duo-Fast’s Cordless Roofing Nailer is perfect for leaks and shingle repair, ridge and hip replacement, steep slope roof work, flashing and vent installation, drip edge and trim, tight spots, and punch list repairs.

The Duo-Fast Cordless Roofing Nailer System drives 2,200 nails per battery charge, and 1,000 nails per fuel cell. An adjustable depth of drive feature reduces shingle blow-through, and the sequential fire trigger contributes to precise nail placement and helps eliminate high nailing. The adjustable shingle guide and a soft-grip handle further enhance precision and control.
The nailer has a single door magazine for easy loading. Skid guards, a belt hook and a safety tether keep the tool where it belongs – on the roof and driving nails.
Roofer's Choice™ Fuel + Nail Packs with PowerBoost™ Nails
The Duo-Fast Cordless Roofing Nailer uses Roofer's Choice™ Fuel + Nail packs, which maximizes the tool's performance and means you never run out of fuel before you run out of nails. Each pack comes with one quicklode™ fuel cell and six coils of nails (720 nails per box).
The nails feature the PowerBoost™ Black Tip Coating for superior ease of drive and a unique vertical groove design for better holding power than standard roofing nails. Each Fuel + Nail pack is enough nails to do two squares or 200 square feet of shingles (your typical roofing repair job).
The Duo-Fast Cordless Roofing Nailer System, Model DFCR175C, comes with a convenient backpack and one Roofer's Choice™ Fuel + Nail Pack, as well as a safety tether, rechargeable battery and charger, and safety glasses. It also features a one year full coverage warranty and five year limited warranty. The system is available at roofing and building supply distributors and wholesalers nationwide.  For more information visit www.duo-fastconstruction.com.

Free 96T PRO Blade with the Bosch Glide Saw GCM12SD

Last June we got our first crack at the Bosch Glide Saw GCM12SD and we are still very impressed with this unit each time we use it. One of the big points we got from the Bosch product manager on the Glide Saw was that they wanted to keep the price “reasonable” so that is was still within the range of other competitor miter saws but would offer all the obvious advantages of the no rail system. In contrast the Festool Kapex KS120 ($1300, Amazon) accomplishes the same reduction in protruding rails but obviously does so at a premium price.

In talking with hundreds of nice folks at the Woodworking show a few weeks back it was clear this saw is very popular among the woodworking crowd. However when it comes to wood workers the one complaint was the 60 tooth general purpose blade it comes with. I didn’t know it at the time but a few weeks later Bosch would be offering a FREE additional 96 tooth anti-vibration blade PRO1296VF which is a $120 blade which virtually eliminates the need for sanding. Simply purchase the GCM12SD ($799, Ohio Power Tool) then complete this Mail-In Rebate form and Bosch will send you the PRO1296VF blade free. The offer is good until the end of April so you still have plenty of time to whittle down the old lady enough so you can buy one.

Kett Tools KSV-434 Vacuum Saw to Meet EPA Requirements

The Kett Vacuum Saw KSV-434 ($445, Ohio Power Tool) has been around for many years and during that time has been a very popular tool. One of the most common applications have been for disaster recovery such as fire & flood repair. This work is made much easier with these Kett Saws because it is so easy to cut into paneling and drywall at a selected depth by setting the depth gauge. This allows for a very clean removal without damaging the studs and framing. For this reason remodeler also find the tool extremely handy when it comes to this kind of task.

We found a very good example of this process in a blog post from the Boistfort Valley Organic Farm. They unfortunately had some flood damage in 2007 but they documented the repairs on it very toughly, you can see in the above images. After the damage occurred the drywall and insulation are removed to a clear point above the damaged area. Then the area is cleaned, repaired and put back to better than before. Looks like these nice folks had some support from friends and family which is always a big help as well.

Recently all the Vacuum Kett saws have been making the news again and found much wider appeal as the EPA regulations for lead paint dust and containment have become very stringent. With $30,000+ fine hanging overhead a $445 investment in a dust collecting Kett saw starts to seem pretty minimal. The positive here is that if you do purchase one of these saws you won’t regret it. Our carpenter friend Doug Mahoney did a nice article for Tools of the Trade Magazine and he highlights some additional benefits for remodelers.

If you are interested in any Kett Tools including saws, shears or replacement parts give the guys a Ohio Power Tool a call 800-242-4424. They really know their Kett Tools.

Bosch 18V Cordless Super Secret In-Store $100 Rebates

If you are like us and enjoy searching out great deals online you probably would have missed this one, but we of course wouldn’t let that happen. All Bosch 18V Cordless tools currently could carry with them a $50 or $100 mail-in Rebate until the end of March, but there is a small catch. You CANNOT purchase these tools online or off any random street corner, you need to visit one of the selected Bosch dealer locations that got this special deal. A guaranteed way to find one of these stores near you is to find the local Bosch System Specialist (BSS) showroom, there are currently 50+ across the country.

If you are in Ohio or passing through Columbus in the next month, of course you will want to stop into Ohio Power Tool for their great deals and knowledgeable staff. If you are in another part of the country check out the Bosch site for a full list of BSS Dealers in your area. It maybe a small drive past a few home centers but the BSS showrooms were selected because of their expert staff and good location, so it should be an enjoyable experience for any tool aficionado. Also there are no limits on the number of rebates you can use once you get there so we would recommend stocking up on the shiny new blue tools for you and your crew while you are there.

And don’t think you can pull a fast one over on the Bosch guys and pick the deal up online; rumor has it each mail-in rebate form carries a microscopic tracking processor, monitored from space by satellites and if a form should find its way aboard a UPS or FEDEx truck… instant evaporation. Probably just rumors and not factual in the least but why chance it, better to just find the nearest BSS store and have yourself a visit and save potentially hundreds on some of the best cordless tools on the market. Even the Power Box 360 get $50 cash back!!!

$100 Rebates on: 37618-01, 17618-01, 24618-01, 25618-01, HTH181-01, HTH182-01, IWHT180-01, IWHT181-01, 26618-01, CLPK40-180, CLPK41-180, CLPK30-180, CLPK22-180, CAG180-01, RHH180-01

$50 Rebate on: 36618-02, 25618-02, CLPK23-180, CLPK24-180, PB360S, PB360D

Why make it sooo difficult to take advantage of this rebate? Probably because it’s one hell of a deal! See all the 18V Bosch Cordless Tools Kits from Ohio Power Tool.

New Ridgid Water Jetting Machine KJ-3100 with 16HP

Recently announced Ridgid has come out with their largest drain cleaning water jetter yet. The KJ-3100 ($5669, Ohio Power Tool) can handle up to 10” lines at 5.5 gallons-per-minute. This is slightly larger than the existing KJ-3000 which is rated to handle up to 8” lines at 4.5 gallons-per-minute. Both units are powered by Honda gas engines but the new KJ-3100 gets a bump up to 16hp from 13hp that is on the KJ-3100. It seemed like an obvious next step as people were looking for more power, but the units remain relatively easy to maneuver through doorways and load on a truck which is key. Check out the recently uploaded instructional video below to learn more on operating these machines. (Actually video for KJ-2200 & KJ-3000 but much of the operation remains the same for the KJ-3100)

If you have any questions on Ridgid jetter or any other Ridgid drain cleaning equipment the professionals at Ohio Power Tool 800-242-4424 would be happy to answer any questions you might have. Read more in the official Ridgid press release below.

ELYRIA, OHIO – The RIDGID® KJ-3100 water jetter offers professional power and performance to clear blockages in 2- to 10-inch diameter drains with a full 3,000-psi working pressure, and a 5 1/2 gallons-per-minute flow.

Powered by a 16-horsepower gasoline engine, the KJ-3100 water jetter allows the user to reach the most remote or restricted-access drains easily. Designed for easy maneuvering, the modular RIDGID KJ-3100 is mounted on a heavy-duty, two-wheeled cart that easily fits through standard sized doors and negotiates tight turns. The design also features easy accessibility to the gas tank allowing the user to refuel without removing the reel.

“We responded to end users’ feedback requesting a water jetter that provides more gallons per minute capacity,” said Brian Mitchell, product manager, RIDGID. “With 5 1/2 gallons of flow, the KJ-3100 water jetter answers those demands.”

The removable hose reel quickly detaches from the unit’s cart for easy loading into service vehicles. The jetter hose is 200-feet in length with a 3/8-inch inner diameter. The detachable hose reel also permits easy access to hard-to-reach drains and indoor drains. To simplify negotiating line bends and traps, the KJ-3100 features the RIDGID pulse action, a pulsing action of the jetter stream that allows the cleaning head and hose to easily and quickly maneuver through traps and bends in the line.

The KJ-3100 jetter’s high-pressure pump is a triplex design with a corrosion-resistant brass head. The brass head is forged, not cast, for added strength and durability. The KJ-3100 comes with a propulsion nozzle that helps to carry the hose quickly through pipes to obstructions, and a penetrating nozzle to cut through ice and sludge.
