Bosch Brute Breaker 11304KD

Recently Bosch upgraded the 11304K to the 11304KD. The actual Brute Breaker 11304 unit remains the same however the tool carrier and the attachments get an upgrade. The new 11304KD comes with the same 2 narrow chisels but the new kit also includes 2 new Star Point Chisels HS2861. These new chisels are specially engineered with hardened star shape cross section which provides five fraction points when making contact. Each rib is worn down individually which acts to self sharpen the bit and removes 30% more material.

In addition to the upgraded chisels the cart itself is much more job site friendly. On the new cart there is actually a place for the power cord and can probably handle an extra extension cord as well which is customary when using the 11304 breaker. The tires are bigger and have better tread to handle typical jobsite conditions. Another big advantage is the tool holder can actually flip up and the cart can not be used as a dolly while the tool is not on it. That is a big advantage as you will always have an extra heavy duty hauler with you on the jobsite.

You can buy the New Bosch 11304KD at OhioPowerTool.com for $1499.

New Bosch Lithium Ion 14.4V & 18V Tools

Back in July we posted on these tools in their European versions (see here). Finally the Bosch Brute Tough Lithium Tools are here, well soon at least. These have been long anticipated and probably not a coincidence these tools will be released almost exactly at the same time as the new Milwaukee M18 line of tools. The Bosch Brute Drills have been the preferred cordless drill of choice by many for some time. The delay in coming to market with a Brute 18V may have caused some to switch brands but hopefully not too many. Bosch is making up for lost time with one of the most powerful 18 volt tools we have seen. The new hammer drill has 650 in/lbs and 0-475/2,050 RPM well above the current competition. The battery system will be similar to the 36 volt tools with SlimPacks and FatPack options.

The only down side of the release of new Bosch 14.4 and 18 volt tools is this means no more amazing deals on Bosch 36 volt which we have seen all summer long. Since Bosch didn’t have an equivalent 18 volt product they rewarded all their loyal users with 36 volt tools at 18 volt prices. A hammer drill kit for instance can still be picked up for $249 while a 4 tool combo is still only $497. These prices are part of a limited time promo and will go back up in September before the new tools are released.

The new 14.4 & 18V tools both Brute Tough and Compact Tough can be pre-ordered at Ohio Power Tool and will be shipped in early October. We will all patiently wait for the different saws, lights and other tools that will work with these systems to be released.

Mount Prospect, Ill., August 25, 2008 Building on the success of its award-winning 36-volt and 12V-Max Litheon cordless tool platforms, Bosch Power Tools and Accessories today unveiled its first Litheon-powered offerings in the popular 18V and 14.4V size ranges. The core of Bosch’s mid-range Litheon™ launch is a full range of cordless drill/drivers and hammer drill/drivers purpose-built to offer the best runtime, battery life, durability and performance in the industry.

“With our launches of 12V MAX and 36V lithium ion tools, Bosch brought compact power and corded power innovation to the category at both ends of the cordless spectrum.  With our renowned Brute Tough™ drill design we brought unprecedented durability to the category. And with our Litheon™ system we brought the most unique battery technology to the category” says Edwin Bender, Bosch’s group product manager for the cordless tool category. “Now we’ve combined the best of these innovations to deliver the best-built lithium ion tools in the business. Guaranteed.”

Whether you’re an all-day, everyday user who demands uncompromising toughness or a lighter duty user who prefers light weight and value, Bosch has developed six new tools to give each user exactly what he/she needs.

Bosch’s Brute Tough lineup boasts best-in-class speed and runtime, perfect for the most demanding professional users and applications. All of the new BruteTough products deliver phenomenal increases in speed and runtime versus the competition, especially in tough applications such as spade bit drilling, hole saw cutting and large fastener driving.

But that’s just half of the story. Bosch’s Brute Tough tools have always been known for unparalleled durability and toughness, and the new lineup takes things a step further. The combination of distinctive Bosch unibody motor construction, all-metal gear train and DuraShield housing yield a tool that will last long-term and even withstand drops from 10 feet. Additional durability-enhancing features include a sturdy 25+1 clutch and tight-gripping ½” metal chuck.

In addition, Bosch has improved the tools’ ergonomics – better balance and more comfortable grip surfaces – to minimize user fatigue and increase long-term productivity. The new Brute Tough lineup, equipped with Bosch FatPack batteries, includes:

17618-01 - 18V Litheon BruteTough Hammer D/D
17614-01 - 14.4V Litheon BruteTough Hammer D/D
37618-01 - 18V Litheon BruteTough D/D

37614-01 - 14.4V Litheon BruteTough D/D

For users who desire comfort, convenience and value, Bosch has upgraded its popular Compact Tough lineup. Known for lightweight, maneuverable performance at a friendly price point, Bosch’s Compact Tough tools still deliver great speed, power and performance. Even when using the SlimPack battery, the Compact Tough Drill/Drivers feature up to 50 percent greater runtime than the competition.

The new Compact Tough tools also deliver improved ergonomics, a versatile 20-position clutch and a robust ½-inch single sleeve chuck. Bosch Compact Tough tools come standard with Bosch SlimPack batteries. The lineup includes:

36618-02 - 18V Litheon CompctTough D/D
36614-02 - 14.4V Litheon CompctTough D/D

At the heart of the new tools is Bosch’s outstanding Litheon™ battery technology. Offering up to 35 percent more runtime than the competition and two times more recharge cycles over the life of the battery, the Litheon system keeps users moving forward in any application. Bosch’s patented Electronic Cell and Motor Protection, meanwhile, protects both the battery and the tool by preventing the three main causes of battery failure – overheating, overloading and deep discharging.

Another key feature of Bosch’s new mid-range Litheon™ family is the Flexible Power System, an option first made popular by Bosch’s 36V Litheon tools. The FatPack option delivers maximum runtime, while the SlimPack option offers light weight. All of Bosch’s Brute Tough and Compact Tough tools are compatible with both options.

Bosch is so confident in its Litheon system that it backs the platform with its Provantage 3-year Tool Protection Plan and 2-year battery replacement plan. “Our Provantage Protection Plan is the best cordless tool program in the industry,” says Bender. “No questions asked, no worries about number of charge cycles, no fine print. We guarantee our system – period.”

Bosch’s new Brute Tough and Compact Tough 14.4V and 18V offerings will be available nationwide October 2008. Also launching later this fall will be an impressive lineup of complimentary Litheon tools, including an 18V circular saw, an 18V reciprocating saw and an 18V heavy duty jobsite flashlight. All tools in the system will be compatible with both FatPack and SlimPack battery designs.

Each of the new Brute Tough and Compact Tough tools comes with two batteries and a 30-minute charger.

New Bosch 12V Max - PS30 Drill/Driver

There is a new addition to the 12V Max Litheon line. The PS30-2A which is a drill/driver with a 3/8” three jawed chuck, instead of the hex type that is on most other models. The obvious advantage is that this will use any standard drill bit, hole saws in addition to all the standard driver bits. I am happy to see this option finally available in the line up. These ultra compact are certainly powerful enough to handle basic drilling and consumers having been waiting for a compact drill like this for some time. The advertising from Bosch last holiday season said “4 now, 12 models in 2008” with the flashlight FL11 and this new PS30 drill we now have a total of 5 by my count so hopefully we will see some additional tools periodically through the end of the year. Ohio Power Tool has the new 12V models available now: Pocket Driver PS20-2A, i-drive PS10-2A & Impactor PS40-2A. Read the full Bosch PS30 press release below.

Bosch Press Release

The latest foray into ultra-compact tool design from Bosch Power Tools and Accessories has yielded what may well become the ideal do-it-all tool for users looking for maximum versatility in a small package. Bosch’s new PS30 12V Max Litheon™ Drill/Driver takes the company’s successful ultra-compact platform one step further with best-in-class speed and torque and a host of new features.

The most immediately noticeable feature is the PS30’s 3/8” three-jawed chuck. The new single sleeve chuck is designed to accommodate almost any need a typical user might encounter in a day’s work – simple drilling, drilling with spade bits, cutting with hole saws, socket fastening, screwdriving and more. To keep users moving in all of those applications, the PS30 delivers a robust 220 inch-pounds of torque, more than twice the torque of any other ultra-compact drill/driver on the market. And, to keep all of that torque under control, Bosch utilizes a 20+1 clutch.
Bosch’s PS30 also offers users the flexibility to choose between speed and precision based on their specific needs. The tool’s two-speed drivetrain delivers between 400-1,100 rpm. At full speed, the tool delivers 2.2 times the speed of any other drill/driver in its class.

With a weight of barely 2.4 pounds, an ergonomic soft grip and a profile that is 50 percent slimmer than a standard 12V drill/driver, the PS30 is both maneuverable and comfortable. The tool is small enough to reach into tight areas and corners with ease and light enough for all-day use and sustained overhead work. In cramped quarters, a robust built-in LED light offers outstanding visibility.

As with Bosch’s previous ultra-compact tools, users can count on quick 30-minute charge times and unparalleled battery life from the proven 12V Max* Litheon battery platform. Bosch’s 12V Max Litheon batteries are compatible with all other Bosch Ultra-Compact tools (PS10, PS20, PS40 and FL11).

The PS30 Two-Speed Ultra-Compact Drill/Driver comes with two 12V Max Litheon batteries, a 30-minute quick charger and a sturdy canvas carrying bag. The PS30 is covered by Bosch’s standard cordless power tool warranty and is eligible to be registered in the Bosch ProVantage Protection Plan. It will be available through authorized Bosch distributors nationwide this fall.

* Bosch now refers to its ultra-compact Litheon battery platform as “12V Max.”  The change is due to lithium ion battery voltage ratings that have been adopted in the marketplace since Bosch first introduced its ultra-compact Litheon products in 2006. The new terminology, which replaces 10.8V, is meant to reduce confusion in the marketplace by clearly identifying tools that are rated at maximum voltage (i.e. 12V) rather than nominal voltage (i.e. 10.8V) by using the “Max” designator. Bosch’s 12V Max Litheon batteries are 100% compatible with all past and future Bosch ultra-compact tools..

Around the World: Bosch 18 Volt Lithium Ion Tools

It has been a constant question for some time now. When is Bosch going to release 18 volt lithium ion tools? With the incredible success of the 10.8 (now 12 volt max) and 36 volt litheon tools it seems like a natural leap to add 14.4 and 18 volt lithium ion tools. Many people were surprised when the Bosch released a second generation of Blue Core (NiCd) tools were released but these tools are incredibly dependable in extreme conditions such as cold weather where the first round of lithium tools had some problems.

At this point there is really no question, professional grade lithium tools have worked out any possible problems. The Bosch 36 volt Litheon line has also become much cheaper with a 4 tool combo kit starting at $497 from Ohio Power Tool.

So when will Bosch release lithium tools in 14.4 volt & 18 volt? I have no idea but my guess is that they are coming soon to the US. The press release below has been available on www.bosch-presse.de/ since March and gives a June 2008 launch for these tools in Europe.

Since the 36 volt Litheon tools are well priced, most professionals are very happy going with these tools. The 14.4 and 18 volt tools will fill some additional needs of professionals and be a great option for serious do it yourselfers looking for the professional quality of Bosch Tools. Hopefully we will see something out for the holidays but I would love to see them out much sooner.

Long distance runner drill/drivers from Bosch – Unmatched performance New cordless drill/drivers with 14.4-volt or 18-volt battery in lithium-ion technology

· Complete range of lithium-ion cordless drill/drivers

· Premium Li-Ion technology enables a large number of screws per battery charge

· Electronic Cell Protection (ECP) for long battery lifetime

· Screwdriver motors with high degree of efficiency and high-quality bearings

Bosch is launching new drill/drivers with 14.4-volt and 18-volt battery in lithium-ion technology onto the market in June 2008. This makes Bosch the first to offer a complete range of professional drill/drivers with lithium-ion batteries in the voltage classes from 10.8 volts to 36 volts. Back in 2005, Bosch was the first to introduce lithium-ion technology in professional power tools: the cordless screwdriver GSR 10.8 V-LI defined a new class of power tools providing "full power at half the size". The next step Bosch took was to open up a new dimension for professional cordless tools with rotary hammers, impact drills and drill/drivers with 36-volt battery in lithium-ion technology. They were the first cordless tools with the same power as a corded tool.

The Cordless Drill/Drivers GSR 14.4/18 V-LI Professional work with a new "Li-Ion Premium" battery with a capacity of 2.6 Ah. They also have motors with a high degree of efficiency and high-quality bearings, as well as a particularly low-friction gearbox. Thanks to the high energy density of the Premium battery and the efficient design of the screwdriver drive train, one battery charge is sufficient to drive 210 screws, 6 x 60 millimeters in size, in softwood. The independent testing laboratory SLG Prüf- und Zertifizierungs GmbH, in Hartmannsdorf in Saxony, has found that: "this is the largest number of screwdriving applications in this cordless drill/driver class." Fast work progress is ensured by the powerful motors with speeds in first gear of up to 450 and 500 rpm respectively, in second gear of up to 1450 and 1600 rpm respectively. Together with the long lifetime of the Li-Ion Premium battery packs, this makes the tools extremely worthwhile investments for professional tradesmen.

The new Bosch Li-Ion Drill/Drivers GSR 14.4/18 V-LI Professional in the Standard-Duty class also have a 13-millimeter Auto-Lock toolholder system and an extremely resilient housing made of "Durashield" material. These cordless drill/drivers remain fully functional, even after being dropped onto concrete from a height of two meters. Further robust features are the two-speed gearbox with solid metal gear wheels and the torque setting wheel made of aluminum. The cordless drill/drivers also have a high level of ergonomics. The large softgrip coverings in the grip area ensure particularly fatigue-free working and a secure hold. An LED lights up the workspace. The recommended retail prices of the cordless drill/drivers are 299 euros and 349 euros respectively plus VAT.

Superior battery technology
The lithium-ion Premium technology from Bosch is vastly superior to other battery technologies. High-quality cells with low internal resistance ensure maximum power. Vibration-resistant connections both between the individual cells and between battery and drill/driver prevent transmission losses from occurring. The intelligent power management of the "Electronic Cell Protection" (ECP) optimizes the energy efficiency during charging and during operation. It protects the battery against overload, overheating and total discharge. As a result, the Li-Ion Premium battery from Bosch offers a lifetime up to 400 percent longer than that of other batteries. The electronically monitored charging process prevents any overloading of the cells and with the rapid charging process, the batteries are charged to 75 percent after just half of the charge time.
All lithium-ion batteries weigh 40 percent less than nickel batteries, while offering the same performance. At the same time, they have a low self-discharge and can be recharged in any charging state since there is no memory effect. There is also no deterioration in battery performance during operation.

Bosch Makes the Switch from 10.8V to 12V Max Litheon

It has been rumored Bosch was going to change from 10.8V to 12V for some time. Yesterday Bosch officially announced the launch the second generation of the PS20 which is a 12V Max tool, the new model number is PS20-2A. The upgrade for the originator of the ultra compact tool market features a 25% increase in power and speed to 100 inch-pound of torque and 500 RPM operating speed. Below is the explanation of the name switch from Bosch’s recent press release:

The new terminology, which replaces 10.8V, is meant to reduce confusion in the marketplace by clearly identifying tools that are rated at maximum voltage (i.e. 12V) rather than nominal voltage (i.e. 10.8V) by using the “Max” designator. Bosch’s 12V Max Litheon batteries are 100% compatible with all past and future Bosch ultra-compact tools.

So don’t worry, all your old 10.8V tools will work with the new 12V tools coming out, only a small marketing tweak to keep up with Milwaukee and Ridgid who decided to give the “Max Voltage Rates” and make people think their tools are more powerful. Basically all the ultra compact tools use almost identical batteries with equal number of lithium cells. Milwaukee has recent changed the name of their ultra compact tools as well to M12 Lithium Ion tools. Hopefully everyone has settled on their new names and we can stop confusing everyone. Personally my favorite of all the ultra compact tools remains the Impactor now also a 12V max PS40-2A , still more powerful than any of the competitors with the conservative numbers.

In addition to the PS20-2A Bosch also announced the launch of a 12V Max flashlight, model FL11. The unit is sold without batteries as an add-on unit to your other Bosch tools. Both new models will be available on Ohio Power Tool shortly, under Bosch Litheon 12V Max.

Electric Cars Run Off Lithium Power Tool Batteries

It seems more and more people are getting excited about electric cars these days. With cars like the new Tesla Sports Car which does 0-60 in 3.9 and can drive 220 miles on each charge I’m pretty excited about the idea myself… although the 6 figure price tag slows that excitement down pretty quick. How far away are we from plug-in cars that are affordable and priced reasonable? Are the “evil” oil companies really buying up all the new technology, slowing the progress, so they can keep oil above $4 gallon? I don’t know and after watching too many movies I partly believe men in black suits are out there and might find me “expendable” if I start theorizing about that. I will tell you there are many people, tired of waiting for Toyota or GM to figure it out, are building their own electric cars and motorcycles. All over the country people have formed Electric Car Clubs while others share their projects on websites like Instructables or make their own sites like www.driveev.com.

Coptool.com probably isn’t the first stop for most people when they are planning their great EV build. We do however get many questions about the Monster Garage episode which ran a few years ago where Jesse James and the guest crew turned a 1962 Chevy Bel Air into an electric car drag racer which ran solely off Milwaukee V28 Lithium Ion Batteries. Unfortunately there is no footage from that show on youtube. Here is Milwaukee’s short clip of the show (If anyone knows where the full show can be watched online let us all know). Some quick math on the cost; 384 V28 Batteries at $150 each from Ohio Power Tool = $57,600 for the batteries alone but I’m sure you can get a volume discount if you call.

This type of build might be out of your price range but there are dozen’s of applications power tool batteries do prove very useful. The Milwaukee V28 ($150) and Bosch 36 volt ($142.50) are good candidates, also there is a Milwaukee V18 kit with 2 batteries and charger for $179.

For more info on the Milwaukee V28 Bel Air here is another good blog post with some details on the systems including pictures from Brian the “Power Tool Geek” View Post Here. Also the original Milwaukee Tool Press Release can be read in full below.

02/03/2006 - Milwaukee Press Release

Jesse James and the Monster Garage re-power a 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air with Milwaukee V28™ Lithium-Ion batteries!

Milwaukee’s V28™ lithium-ion batteries are getting noticed in more than one way at recent trade shows. Contractors and builders from across the nation checked out Monster Garage’s latest mechanical marvel, a 1962 Chevy Bel Air that has been re-powered to run off of 384 V28™ lithium-ion batteries.

The car made its first public appearance at the International Builders’ Show held recently in Orlando and will be featured on the cable TV show, Monster Garage on Monday, April 10, 2006. (Show airs on The Discovery Channel at 9:00 PM Mondays, Eastern Time)

The car was designed and re-built in five days by cable TV’s car-star Jesse James and his crew at his Monster Garage in Long Beach, California. It did standing quarter-mile runs in 14.533 seconds at 93.3 miles an hour, says Jon Zick, Milwaukee’s chief engineer of new concepts. With racing tires, he says the Milwaukee-red, cool-looking car could do the quarter mile at over 100 MPH!

The batteries in the car were connected in series to produce about 336 volts at 3,000 amps. The batteries drive twin electric forklift motors.

In every day life, the batteries drive Milwaukee’s new line of V28™ cordless tools that includes a portable band saw, impact wrench, Sawzall® reciprocating saw, circular saw and hammer-drill. V28™ users can expect up to 40-50% more power and up to twice the run time when compared with 18-volt NiCd batteries.

Milwaukee will introduce a V18™ 18-volt Li-ion tool system later this summer that will retrofit on existing Milwaukee 18-volt NiCd cordless tools.

Getting More Out of Your New Compact Power Tools

It’s no secret there has been some very big success in the Pocket/Micro tool market. It started with the Bosch 10.8v tools, then the Milwaukee 12v (newly named the M12 tools) and now almost every tools company has some form of these compact lithium ion tools. One of the common complaints for most of these tools is that they don’t have a standard chuck but instead a ¼” hex. This means you can’t use standard drill bits for pilots or any other form of drilling and if you need to carry two tools around that pretty much defeats the purpose. Obviously if you are going to do some serious drilling you may want to look at a slightly larger tool. Perhaps something like the new Milwaukee compact 18V Lithium 2601-22 ($199), still lightweight just over 3.5 lbs but it is built for heavy use. That being said you should still be able to do some occasional drilling and detail work with the 10.8v and 12v tool.

The internet is an amazing place to shop, compare and learn about products but I do feel there is something that maybe hasn’t been completely figured out when it comes to recommendations and accessories the way you get when you come into a store, hold the tools and talk to the guys behind the counter. A great instance of this is with the Milwaukee 38 Piece Quik-Lok 48-32-1500 set which sells incredibly well with any brand of the Micro & Pocket Drivers in the store because it just makes sense. The kit comes with 7 different sized ¼” hex drill bits, ¼” & 3/8” square socket adapters, Quik-Loc connectors and all sorts of different size driver bits. This is way more than just another driver bits which you already have but some however that gets lost online. With so much “upselling” going on it’s really hard to tell if this is really a recommendation from someone who know what they are talking about or simple a computer program matching compatible accessories, trying to add a few extra bucks on the sale.

Bosch Acquires CST/Berger Measuring Tools from Stanley Works

On June 11th the Robert Bosch Tool Corporation announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire CST/Berger from Stanley Works. The purchase price amounts to $205 Million for the tool division that had $80 million in sales for 2007 (excluding $10 million in certain European sales). The CST/Berger is primarily focused on laser leveling & measuring tools in the North American markets.

So why is Bosch Tools interested in this contractor oriented brand of laser products when Stanley has apparently lost interest? There are several takes on this, first Bosch is extremely diverse around the world and therefore less impacted by swings in the US construction market. If Bosch can capitalize on the success of CST/Berger in the US and duplicate it around the world they should see a solid increase in sales. Secondly, Bosch has only recently introduced its first professional/consumer measuring tools. If they were to incorporate the products of CST/Berger into the Bosch Tool family and make the price more reachable they could see serious increases in sales from contractors and consumers alike.

What is Stanley going to do with all that money? They actually already spent it and then some to acquire 100% of the Sonitrol Corporation for $275 million. The Sonitrol Corporation provides security services, access control and fire detection to commercial clients. The transaction will bring a new commercial customer base to Stanley's Convergent Security Solutions business.

John F. Lundgren, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented: "These two transactions are important steps toward advancing our growth strategy and repositioning the company to be less dependent on construction and DIY markets. We continue to be strongly committed to shifting the company's portfolio into higher-growth, higher-return areas such as electronic security. The addition of Sonitrol, with its iconic brand and strong franchisee and direct sales network, expands the scale of our existing North American monitoring operation, increases our recurring revenue and adds breadth and depth to our electronic security product offering."

The recent down turn in the US construction market has not been an easy situation for many tool companies. It is completely understandable for a company such as Stanley Works to want to diversify their exposure. Stanley’s Bostitch line of air nailers is facing hard times as well with the slow down in new home building. Bosch has not only limited their risk with global reach but they have been in many diverse industries for years including security systems, car parts and even kitchen appliances.

Bosch is committed to strengthening their power tools brand and there could potentially be additional acquisitions to make in the near future. The immediate slow down will most likely turn around but it has made some companies much more interested in selling it appears.

Bosch Dust Extraction Grinder Attachments

Recently Bosch Tools added several products to their Dust Extraction line which should make many peoples lives easier and healthier. Working with concrete specifically can create Crystalline Silica or Silica Dust. When this substance enters the lungs it can cause the lung disease Silicosis. Silicosis can be disabling or even fatal as it blocks the lungs from absorbing oxygen when inhaling. There is no cure at this time for Silicosis but there are many ways to prevent breathing in the Silica Dust in the first place. Simply keep it out of the air as much as possible and that is just what Bosch has made much easier and cheaper.

Bosch’s SG-Series (18SG-5E & 18SG-7) attachments are designed for concrete surfacing applications where aggressive dust removal is a must. Optimized for use with Bosch’s AirSweep vacuum system, the SG-Series attachments keep concrete dust out of the air and off of the work surface. A removable nose piece enables up-to-wall surfacing, while a replaceable brush ring maximizes the attachment’s lifespan in grueling environments. The SG-Series attachments are ideal for concrete restoration work and other surfacing applications.

Bosch’s DC-Series (18DC-5E & 18DC-6E) attachments are designed for efficient dust removal in masonry cutting applications and keep worksites dust-free without sacrificing performance. Featuring a large, stable footplate and fast single-screw depth adjustment, the DC-Series attachments allow for a full depth of cut and outstanding line-of-sight in precision concrete cutting applications. Like the SG-Series attachments, the DC-Series attachments are optimized for use with Bosch’s AirSweep system.

The new lines of grinder attachments feature vacuum outlets that are made to work with the Bosch Airsweep Vacuum 3931A. This system previously has worked amazingly well with the Bosch Tuckpointer Grinder 1775E and the 5” Concrete Surfacing Grinder 1773AK. These tools are both great to have on the job site but neither one is cheap or multipurpose. The new grinder attachments simply add function to your existing tools and for relatively little cost. If you don’t currently use Bosch Grinders they start at $75 at Ohio Power Tool.

Top Deals: Dad & Grad Gift Ideas

It’s that time of year again, where everyone lump Dads and Grads together so they can make snappy sounding sales promotions. Power Tools from Around the World

In today’s global market many power tool & equipment manufacturers are selling around the world in many different markets. In each market you will find slightly difference products based on market demand, competition, patent laws and power voltage along with many other criteria. Normally when something is successful in one market they will want to bring the tool to more markets. This is why you can often get an idea of new tools that might be headed to the US by looking at power tool sites from other countries. We like to think we are always the first to get new products but often times that just isn’t the case.

Bosch Power Tools is one of the largest international companies which make power tools as well as so many other products from kitchen appliances to windshield wipers. On their Australian page we found an interesting product that will probably make its way to the US. The PMF 180 E is a multipurpose tool which very closely resembles the incredibly successful Fein Multimaster. I would be surprised if we don’t see this Bosch in US tool form by Christmas.

In addition to the Bosch Power Tool line Ohio Power Tool has recently added the Fein Power Tool line to it’s list of manufacturers. The company produces many high quality tools professionals have come to depend on. Expect the full line of tools to be added to our website shortly. In the mean time fell free to call 800-242-4424 for pricing or with any questions about Fein tools.

Top Deals – Bosch Free 10.8V Cordless Tool

If you haven’t picked up one of the Bosch 10.8V tools yet, now is the perfect time because you will get a free tool! Purchase any of the driver kits PS10-2, PS20-2 or PS40-2 and you can mail-in to receive a FREE PS20. The free tool is a bare tool only so you don’t get batteries, charger or carrying case but it’s still a great deal. It’s a tough decision between the i-drive PS10-2 or Impactor PS40-2 they are both great tools but I would probably go with the Impactor. Bosch is planning to release additional tools expected to hit shelves soon which will work on the same battery system. I would expect to see some new cutting tools, drills and probably some different woodworking or craft type tools. The 10.8V battery is great but probably won’t be powering a 6.5” circular saws anytime in the future.

Handheld Demolition Breakers – Pneumatic vs Hydraulic vs Electric vs Gas Power

There are advantages and disadvantages for each type of breaking tool with a large variety of tools in each category. We wanted to do an overview of the main differences between these types of systems as well as highlight a few recommended products in each category.

Pneumatic Breakers are very common among commercial demolition. Common Pneumatic breaker sizes are 35 lb, 60 lb and 90 lb. We recommend Chicago Pneumatic for the air breakers themselves.

PROS: These air tools are lightweight and relatively inexpensive for the tools themselves. Tools can last a long time and are fairly easy to repair.

CONS: Pneumatic Breakers require a fairly large air compressor power source. They are loud to operate, inoperable at low temperatures and complete system can be pricy. Air tools also require a fair amount of up keep due to need to be oiled and fear of moisture buildup in the lines.

Power Source: The recommended compressor would be a Chicago Pneumatic screw compressor or Ingersoll Rand Gas Compressor if you are going to be working away from an electric power source. Breakers require much larger compressors than that portable one you use to power your nail gun. You will need a large tank and serious power. The screw compressors are recommended because they provide more continuous air flow, last longer, run quieter and are more compact.

Hydraulic Breakers work similar to the pneumatic systems where there is a power source completely separate from the operating tool. Our recommendation for a Portable Hydraulic System would defiantly be the Atlas Copco Power Pack (picture shown above) with the associated tools.

PROS: Hydraulic tools provide the most power and torque as the fluid can not compress like air, the tools will not freeze at low temperatures, hydraulic tools can work underwater, life span of the tool is very long, low maintenance as the parts are continuously lubricated and the tools are quieter than other options.

CONS: The main problem with the hydraulic system is the initial costs are more than other options and if the line ever breaks you have a big mess.

Power Source: The Atlas Copco Power Pack is fairly compact with wheels and handle for easy maneuverability. It can easily be lifted into a truck bed and is far more portable than an air compressor with comparable output. The Atlas Copco sytem is powered by a Honda 13 hp gas engine and works with a wide range of tools which can all work simultaneously off one unit.

Electric Breakers are probably the easiest out of the box breakers to use. Simply plug into an electrical outlet and the tool is ready to use. These are the most common for rental to take out the back patio or other one time jobs. Our Recommendations would be for the Bosch Breakers, specifically the Bosch Brute 11304 or new lighter Bosch 11335K (shown above).

PROS: Easy to use, no expensive external power source required, can use in cold temperatures, quieter to operate than other options, less expensive for complete system.

CONS: Not as powerful as pneumatic or hydraulic tools, lower power/weight, need to be near source of electrical power, shorter life of tool, more costly repairs and should not be operated around water.

Power Source: The most versatile as it can work with any electric power source with a plug. For mobile use they work with any heavy duty jobsite generator such as the Milwaukee Generators powered by Honda Engines, available in 4300, 5000, 6000 & 7000 watts.

Gas Breakers (self contained) are the only completely independent breakers that don’t have a cord or hose which could easily be cut or broken. Chicago Pneumatic makes the Red Hawk Gas Powered Breaker, our recommendation for gas breaker.

PROS: Completely self contained, quick easy set up, no hoses or electric cords to be damaged and more versatile single unit.

CONS: Noisier, poisonous exhaust fumes, heavy unit, continuous maintenance, costly repairs, lowest power/weight ratio.

Power Source: Self contained gas engine makes this ideal for small jobs and remote locations.

Overall our recommendation for any serious demolition jobs done by hand is for the Power Pack from Atlas Copco. In addition to the several options of breakers this unit works with available core drills, large saws and many other tools. Hydraulic power is the most powerful, can be used underwater or in the cold and the Power Pack unit is portable enough for almost all jobs.

Way More Than a Stud Finder

dmd4k multi-detector

The relatively new Bosch Multi-Detector DMD4K at first glance looks like a glorified stud finder but this little gizmo does way more than allow you to point it at yourself and make bad jokes. It does detect wood studs however it also can detect metal and let you know if the metal is ferrous (magnetic) or non-ferrous (non-magnetic). In addition it has a zoom feature which allows you to detect material that is deeper in the material (up to 4”). Recently during a job site demo we used the DMD4K to find rebar in concrete barriers several inches deep in concrete. There is a gauge to tell you how strong the signal is and coupled with the zoom feature it is pretty easy to exactly pin point any pipe, wire or stud. Once the material is located it is easy to mark it through the illuminated hole in the center of the detector, large enough for any standard pencil. Note, don't use a mechanical pencil or metal pen as the metal next to the detector throws off your readings.  The detector also can detect live electric lines and has a separate gauge for the strength of line. This is a big convenience and an even bigger safety feature for demolition work.

The DMD4K is a great tool which you can get at Ohio Power Tool for $89.00. It is also available for free if you buy a Bulldog SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer 11255VSR ($239). It is shipped right with the tool smae day if ordered before 1:00pm EST, no mail-in rebate or anything like that. The DMD4K is very useful for any contractor, handyman, plumber, electrician, you name it.

Bosch Lowers Prices & Free Litheon Batteries

Recently Bosch drastically reduced their price on the 36 volt Litheon tools to the point they are actually cheaper than some of their own 18 volt NiCd tools. In addition to these new low prices they have also supplied Ohio Power Tool with an additional FatPack 36 volt battery for every drill/driver kit and 4 piece combo kit sold. (Get the battery with kits, no mail-in rebates) I am having a tough time finding comparable brands that have a better deal on 18 volt NiCd Drill/Driver kit with three batteries.

My assumption is they are basically giving these tools away at little profit or most likely a lose. This is a common practice in other industries such as video game consoles where they lose money to get you into the system but then make up for it over the next few years with video game sales. Bosch makes exceptional power tools and the 36 volt Litheon tools are probably their most impressive line up. These tools have not however made their way into most peoples hands. People tend to be loyal to one brand until compelled to make a switch. I think Bosch is trying to make that compelling argument, a 36 volt drill/driver kit with 3 lithium ion batteries priced at $229.00 is pretty compelling. A full 4 tool combo kit with 3 lithium ion batteries is only $499.

Clearly the goal here is to get more 36V tools and more importantly batteries into the hands of as many consumers as possible. Bosch is looks to the future and plans to expand their Litheon tool line up. Future success with any cordless line is very much dependant on how many users currently have the batteries. Lose some money upfront, gain more users for years to come.

Bottom line is if you are looking to upgrade some older tools or looking for a completely new cordless combo kit, now is the time to take advantage. These tools give you the same power as if you were plugging strait into the wall and with 3 batteries there is essentially zero down time. The Bosch 10.8v tools also get a price drop PS20-2 to $119 and PS40-2 to $169.

If you have any questions about Bosch Tools or any other tools call the experts at Ohio Power Tool, 800-242-4424.

New Bosch Accessories - Bits & Blades

Over the past year Bosch has made some serious strides to increase their place as one of the top tool manufactures by expanding their tool and accessory lines. When you think about it, your accessories can make a huge difference in the productiveness of your tools. By improving different specialty blades and bits in the line you can really get the most out of your old tools with a relatively small investment. Of course when you are happy with these accessories you will be much more likely to buy the Bosch Tools in the future and the good people at Bosch may be aware of this fact.

Additionally the company has made serious advances in the overall marketing of the Bosch Tool line. Just look at the tool & accessory displays they have added to our showroom. It has a built in 27” HD TV which is suppose to run Bosch promos all day but we put on ESPN for “Mike & Mike in the Morning” and maybe a little Sports Center. Of course we stand behind their products 100% for use by diy users, contractors and professionals of all kinds. It doesn’t matter how fancy the displays we will only put products in our store and on our website if they can live up to abuse our customers expect.

Four of the recent additions to the Bosch accessories line:

Fiber Cement Blades - The 7 ¼” hard body blade features six carbide teeth brazed with C4 ultra-fine carbide that lasts longer than standard carbide. Bosch is one of only two blade manufacturers who produce their own carbide.
The thin kerf design removes less material, which results in a cleaner, faster cut.
The new blade, part # CB706FC, is equipped with deep gullets engineered to minimize dust when cutting. Regular carbide blades will pulverize the material, whereas the Bosch blade chips away the material in larger chunks reducing the amount of dust generated.
Developed for working with cement fiber board, backer board and Masonite, the Bosch
Carbide Tipped Fiber Cement Circular Saw Blade has a 5/8” arbor to fit any standard circular saw and it also features a 13/16” diamond knock-out for worm drive saws.

Carbide Glass and Tile Bits - Starting at 1/8” up to 1” in diameter, the industry’s largest bit size, they are equipped with a 3-flat shank to reduce slippage that leads to more accurate cutting.
These tungsten carbide bits are diamond ground to a precision point that eliminates walking and its reinforced head prevents the carbide from cracking.
The new Glass and Tile bits are best suited for working with glass, ceramic walls, and ceramic floors making it the best solution for cutting glass, bathroom installations, drilling and fastening mirrors or even setting screws in glass furniture.

Carbide Hole Saws - The diamond-ground carbide teeth are extraordinarily durable and extremely powerful, for fast removal of materials. The drop-shaped chip clearance slots allow for greater chip and dust removal, resulting in uninterrupted cutting.
“Feedback from our customers was overwhelming for the need for a single hole saw that could cut through multiple materials and quickly remove the plug,” states James Mogle, Product Manager, Bosch Power Tools and Accessories. “The new carbide hole saw easily cuts some of the hardest materials and can still make precision cuts in fragile materials such as tile. And users can quickly change hole saw sizes with the quick change mandrel.”
The carbide line has 19 cups ranging from 1” to 4-1/8”. For multiple cutting applications, Bosch has two sets available. Each set contains two carbide tipped pilot bits and the quick change mandrel (1-3/8”). The eight-piece set includes five carbide cups ranging from 1-3/16” to 2-1/4” and the five-piece set has two cups: 3-1/4” and 4-1/8”.

Cement and Masonry Anchor Installation - The 9-piece kit comes in Bosch’s Brute Tough case that is made to withstand even the most demanding worksite conditions. The kit includes a Masonry Screw Drill Bit Holder and Allen wrench, Drill Bit Sleeve, both the 5/32” and 3/16” carbide drill bits that feature a flat shank to reduce slippage, two magnetic nutsetters, and two Phillips Head bits, everything professionals need for drilling and driving concrete screws. Bosch is the only manufacturer to offer the entire line in one package.
The magnetic nutsetters eliminate dropped screws when setting and also reduces damage done to the sleeve, unlike other products that require use of the sleeve when setting screws, which will cause undue wear and fatigue.
The Screw Drill Bit Sleeve allows for a quick and easy change from drilling to driving by working with both 5/32” and 3/16” bits, thus eliminating the need for two drills.

Visit the Bosch home page on Ohio Power Tool to see all of our Bosch tools and accessories. Not all accessories have made it to the website, if you have a specific accessory you would like and can’t find it on the site please email sales@ohiopowertool.com or call 800-242-4424.

Milwaukee 4201-22 vs. Bosch PS20-2 - Part 2

In a recent post we briefly compared the Bosch 10.8V Pocket Driver PS20-2 and the Milwaukee 12V Micro Driver 2401-22. At the time we had not receive the Milwaukee 12V tools so it was more of an on paper comparison. Now that a few months have past and we have some customers using them it is time to take another look.

I would like to start off by saying both these tool lines have been incredibly successful and I really feel these are professional tools that just happen to be very small. The Sub Compact Tool category has a very legitimate place in many professional tool boxes. An estimated 80-90% of our customers are professionals who come to us for their tools and repairs and we wouldn’t sell any products we don’t stand behind.

The Bosch PS20-2 claims to be able to drive 100 3” screws on a single charge and I though a good comparison would be to see if that was true and then see if the Milwaukee 2401-22 could match it… then though about screwing in 200 3” screws and decided against that particular comparison.

On paper it looks like the Milwaukee Micro Driver has a serious advantage over the Bosch Pocket Driver.

Milwaukee 2401-22 Micro Driver   –   12 Volt   –   120 ft lb

Bosch PS20-2 Pocket Driver   -   10.8 Volt   -   80 ft lb

Some interesting information on the PS20-2, the rating is actually on their “average power” not the “initial power”. The claim from Bosch is that their starting power rating is actually above 12 Volts and the initial ft lb torque is also higher, presumably around 120 ft lb like the Milwaukee 2401-22. The entire line of 10.8V Bosch tools will actually get a name change to “Bosch 12 Volt Max” at some point in the near future. This explanation leads me to believe their will be no real changes to the components only the name will change to reflect their “Max” power rating. This information is from Bosch so you should consider the source; Milwaukee probably has a completely different view on comparing the two products.

If this is the case essentially these two tools are even more similar than they appear. When you look at the batteries they look almost identical in shape and size. It is not hard to believe the power output would be very similar as well. The chargers and cases are also very similar as you can see in the picture below. I did test these both out on a few screws and from that basic test I couldn’t feel any real difference in power although I wasn’t exactly testing the limits.

Currently Bosch has 4 tools in their line-up while Milwaukee only has the 1 but both companies are planning to have 20-30 tools out for each line in the next year or two. It will be very interesting to see what new tools we will see in the sub compact tool market. Milwaukee for instance has plans to create a product that will compete with the Ridgid Seesnake Micro 25643 so we are going to see all sorts of new tools outside traditional saws, drivers and drills. This makes the comparison much more difficult because you always want to choose the line that will have the most versatility using the same battery system.

Bosch does currently have a special for a free ESPN fleece with all 10.8v purchases until April 11th if that might effect your buying decision.

So who wins the ultra compact driver comparison between the Bosch vs. Milwaukee? I personally would have to give a slight advantage to the Milwaukee 2401-22 and this is under the assumption the power output and torque are more similar than the numbers say, which I can believe. The Milwaukee had a few features over the Bosch that makes it stand out. First, the quick bit-loading 1/4” hex chuck is really nice and easier to use than the Bosch. Second the Milwaukee has a battery gauge, where the Bosch doesn’t. Finally the Milwaukee 12V Driver just looks cooler. Now the Milwaukee did come out 6 months later so they had time to really make more improvements. Both tools have build in light, weight about the same and feel very similar in hand. What would really make the decision much easier is if I knew what 20+ products were going to be added to each company’s line up. These are just the drivers; I can’t wait to see how competitive this gets in the next year.

If you have any opinions about either of these tools or any other sub compact tools feel free to post a comment.

Holiday Gift Ideas Part 2 - Dream Gifts

What do you really want for the holidays? Here are some ideas for dream gifts for those who want to do a little more around the house… or perhaps build another house. Personally I’m obsessed with tools and I’ll look for any excuse to get all the new tools. The Micro Seesnake is a good example of that. How did anyone ever live without this thing? Some of the things on the list are defiantly overkill but for the most part pretty reasonable, in my mind.

First off everyone needs a good set of cordless power tools. The Bosch Litheon 36 volt 4 tool combo kit CPK40-36 should work nicely. At $642.50 with the $100 off tool trade-in deal, these tools are within reach. The Bosch 36 volt Litheon tools are some of the most powerful on the market today and with 2 FatPack batteries you’ll be able to work all day long without waiting for batteries to recharge.

In addition to a good set of cordless tools you’re going to need a really good saw that is portable enough to travel but still make extremely accurate cuts. Most likely you will already have a circular saw and reciprocating saw so the next step would be to get a miter saw and/or table saw. If you have a nice big work shop you might as well get both. On the other hand if you do need to do some work away from home base it’s great to have something that travels easily. In the past a table saw was not a good option for portability.  This is not the case today, check out the Bosch 4100-09 10 inch table saw. It is extremely portable and sets up in about 5 seconds. Bosch also makes several amazing 12 inch miter saws checkout the 4212L and 5412L models.

For working at home an item many of us would like to have in their garage is a lift. Is that really out of the question? Not with the Norco 2.5 ton air lift jack. These fine lifts have wheels so you can store them away when not in use and move them into position when you are ready to turn your garage into a full blown mechanic shop. For $865.33 each these are a great investment for any garage.

Once you got that hot rod up on the lift you are going to need to get some work done. Ohio Power Tool sells a wide variety of other automotive tools and everything you might need to really make a lot of noise in the garage. Obviously the first place to start is a good air compressor to run all your new pneumatic tools. No need to mess around with a wimpy little compressor for the garage that can barely keep up. Ingersoll Rand makes a nice 5 HP, 80 gallon, two stage compressor that will ensure you never run out of juic
