Third Annual Tool Racing Championships, A Big Success!

Thank you to all the fans, vendors, racers and terrific sponsors that made the third annual Tool Racing Championships (www.ToolRaces.com) an overwhelming success for the 2011 season. Weather worked with us this time around and a lot of folks came together to support the event in so many ways. For about half the crowd it was their first time visiting the Idea Foundry and in addition to the media exposure a great way to introduce more people to the kind of fun we have there every day.

Kickbike Scooter Powered by Milwaukee M28 Right Angle Drill

Unfortunately we can’t take credit for being the first to power a bike or scooter with a cordless power drill however we did feel there might be some different ways to do things that have not been done. Our desire to build this came in the course of doing research for a recent Blog-A-Geddon, “What device, vehicle, object, etc would you like to see powered by a cordless drill and how would you do it?” We found several interesting rigs online and eventually our inner 8 year old took over and we had to build something.

Inhaler: The Hand Built Hot Rod that Happens to be Electric

One of the greatest things about being involved in a community workshop group like the Columbus Idea Foundry is that you get to see other people’s projects come together before your very eyes. Our fellow Foundry member Todd Perkin has been plotting his Inhaler Hot Rod for some time but now that it’s getting towards the final few months of the build his vision is really coming together and lots of folks are lending a hand.

Double the Size of the Columbus Idea Foundry Workshop

For those who don't know, the Idea Foundry is a community workshop located in Columbus, Ohio. Currently at 10,000 square foot of workshop, educational center, hackerspace superieur, artist and business incubator as well as providing general public community access to all manner of tools (welding, woodworking, CNC machining, laser cutting, 3D printing, and more).

On August 15th, the shop has the opportunity to expand into the neighboring industrial unit (additional 10,000sq ft). By doing so, will be able to split the workshop into a "dirty" space (current location) with welding, woodworking, metal casting, metal fabrication, CNC machining, and other dust- and chip-making processes; and a "clean" space (new wing) with, among other planned resources, a photographic dark room, a videography stage, a textile/upholstery, a proper lithography room for etching/engraving circuits, metal, and screenprinting masks, and about a dozen more studio spaces for artists.

To celebrate once the target goal is reached, there will be a huge party on August 20th, 2011, in both the old and the new space.  On that day, the Idea Foundry will also be host to its 3rd Annual Tool Racing Championships (more info to follow shortly); interactive demonstrations of design and fabrication; provide tours of our new wing; and throw an after party with live music, "Burning Man"-style performances and much more.

Visit the Idea Foundry KickStarter Page to learn more and donate!!!!

Build a Cigar Box MIDI Controller for Max/MSP

It’s interesting being a part of a community workshop; all day long the message board is a flicker with posts and random comments from folks offering up materials and other interesting stuff. Such as, does someone want 30 cigar boxes? Then a few days later a project like this pops up on adafruit.com on how to “Build a Cigar Box MIDI Controller” and you say wait a minute I recognize that laser cutter.

Power Tool Drag Racing Tomorrow in Columbus, Ohio

Yes just one day away is the 2nd annual Ohio Tool Racing Championship (www.toolraces.com) and things are getting pretty exciting around the Columbus Idea Foundry this week. Lots of people are piling in this week to get their projects finish. It will probably be a very late night at the shop tonight for some but we’d expect nothing less.

Our Coptool racer is 95% complete and a fairly menacing looking creation; after all there are some pretty big expectations on us. "The Reaver" is welded out of 1” steel tubes, powered by a 9” Bosch grinder pushing a 10” Milwaukee saw blade. See more pics in this Facebook Album. We are pretty confident she will smoke down the track and take any hits that come her way (although pretty inexperienced welder so watch out).

Ohio Tool Racing Championships - August 21st 2010

It is official the Columbus Idea Foundry will be holding the 2nd Annual Ohio Tool Racing Championships (see www.ToolRaces.com) on Saturday, August 21st. Last year was the first time a race like this had been held in Ohio and the event saw a dozen entries with a solid group of spectators. Almost instantly after the first event however interested began to grow and this year's event looks to be bigger and even more fun!

Last year’s winner, TJ, has already begun the taunting and promises “The PIG (see above) will be returning with his head sewn back on.... Yes Believe It !!!” Many other are already committed and we should see some stiff competition with so spectacular machines.

Show Us Your Shop - Columbus Idea Foundry

The Idea Foundry was the Brain Child of Alex, Mandy & Nikki with the cooperation of a dozen others who helped build the place a little over a year ago. Since then the space has morphed and transformed itself almost weekly to accommodate new equipment and ideas to the point some of the more exotic non-working equipment had to be edited out. As it stands today the shop is a very functional space for many different avenues of creativity including: woodworking, welding (mig, tig, stick), plasma cutting, blacksmithing, sand casting, CNC/CAD (Shopbot, Bridgeport, Makerbot), screen printing, electronics, jewelry making and much much more.
