The Milwaukee M12 hacksaw 2420-22 ($179, Ohio Power Tool) has been an incredibly popular seller, with the pistol grip it is far more user friendly for 1 hand cutting than your traditional reciprocating Sawzall. Milwaukee has also recently come out with high capacity M12 XC Battery ($79, Ohio Power Tool) which not only give the M12 hacksaw longer runtime but actually gives the tool more power.

Available soon you will have the option of an M18 Hacksaw which will come with either the M18 slim or XC battery. This will be a good addition for those that already have other Milwaukee M18 tools. For many professionals there will be plenty of justification to have both a Sawzall & Hacksaw on the jobsite.

The only difference I can see in the stats is that the M18 has a ¾” stroke vs M12 with a ½” stroke. Otherwise it looks to be the same 0-3000 SPM speed and Quik-Lok keyless blade holder. We will let you know more as these become available.  Checkout the youtube video below:

At the World of Concrete this year Bosch had several impressive displays inside, outside and even sponsored the tools competition. It was also a great opportunity to get a sneak peak at many of the new tools which will be coming out in the next few months. Some new things in cordless, lasers, detectors, new Power Boxes, innovative accessories and much more. Here are just a few of the highlights; as we get more info and get closer to the launch dates we will circle back and do full posts on each of these.

Litheon 18V Cordless – SDS & Grinder

There were 2 very interesting products I had the opportunity to try out for the Bosch 18v Litheon line. First was the cordless grinder which was set up along with the Makita, DeWalt & Milwaukee cordless grinders. All had cutting wheels and we were cutting a standard size metal pipe. The Bosch held up amazingly well compared to some of the competition, the Bosch was clearly more powerful and with their battery protection system I was assured would far outlast in heavy use. Bosch also had a SDS-Plus 18v cordless drill on hand to demo. I’m not sure how the power/battery compares to 36v 11536-2 ($522, Ohio Power Tool) but it felt very solid and would be ideal for setting tap cons or more heavy duty applications.

Milwaukee posted on their website an interesting new tool. It is a new Milwaukee M12 screwdriver that has 3 torque settings: 60 in-lbs, 80 in-lbs & drill. The main purpose of the new drill/driver is to install no-hub couplings most accurately to their specifications. The M12 2455-22 ($299, Ohio Power Tool) is the first if its kind in the industry and designed to install 300 clamps per charge and only needs recalibrated every 25,000 clamps. Every no-hub coupling give a specific torque setting threshold and there are manual tools on the market but nothing cordless in a package this compact. Obviously this won’t be a tool for everyone with such a specific application but it does reinforce the idea Milwaukee is making tools for professionals even in their 12 volt tools.

New as of today you can now take advantage of this great Bosch Power Tool deal for either a Free 18V Battery BAT609 ($77 value) or 18v Flashlight. Announced officially today Milwaukee Tool has come out with a M12 Grease Gun 2446-21XC (Ohio Power Tool, $199). This is a new category for Milwaukee and will go up directly against the Lincoln Lube 12V PowerLuber 1244 (Ohio Power Tool, $199) which has been the most popular cordless grease gun for several years. When compared head to head, Milwaukee vs Lincoln Lube the 12 volt Milwaukee has several advantages. The two kits cost about the same however M12 2446-21XC offers higher pressure with 8,000psi, a battery that can dispense 7 tubes, almost double the lincoln (although 1244 includes 2 batteries vs 2446-21XC kit with 1) and possibly most significantly the Milwaukee M12 battery is shares with 20+ other tools while the Lincoln 12V battery can only be used on the one tool.

The Milwaukee grease gun also offers many innovative new features right down to the basic design of the tool, which has a base and more supportive tube enclosure. Hopefully this new design will prevent some of the damage we see every day with cracked handles and housings. Lincoln does offer an 18 volt PowerLuber 1844 (Ohio Power Tool, $267) which can pump 8-10 tubes per battery and has 2 speed transmission, high volume & high pressure but even their high pressure option is only 7,500psi. The higher pressure is required for some applications, also very useful in cold weather or clearing clogged zerk fittings.        

Overall I think the Milwaukee Grease Gun 2446-21XC Kit (also available as tool only 2446-20XC, $129) will be a very popular item if for no other reason than there are already so many Milwaukee M12 tools and batteries out there. As the M12 line grows it makes the case stronger for all the other existing tools, also this is the first tool we have seen a kit include the M12 XC high capacity battery but it gives me hope on expanding the line further in the future. The new Lincoln PowerLuber AC2440 ($188, Ohio Power Tool) is the new corded version that will plug into any standard 120V outlet and uses the 14 oz grease tubes. The AC2440 has similar output as the cordless 14.4V & 18V Cordless PowerLubers with 2 speed options, High Pressure (3.6 oz/min) & Low Pressure (8.0 oz/min) but will never run out of juice as long as it’s plugged in. Basically this is a good option if you need a lightweight portable grease gun to do a lot of volume but will always be close to power or a generator. In certain shops this might make a lot of sense however the new Lincoln 1844 ($267, Ohio Power Tool), 18V grease gun is now available which can do 8-10 tubes per battery so running out of juice with this cordless is less of an issue. Perhaps you have seen a commercial for the Craftsman Auto-Hammer recently and wondered as I did how useful is this new tool really. Would this ever replace my real hammer? Can it do handle large nails, what about finishing nails? I had the chance to review one the other day and hopefully this will provide a little insight if you are thinking about getting one or asking Santa to put one under the tree. Out of the Box

A flip up view window to check out what’s inside… I suppose it can be helpful to check out the actual size of the tool, closest you’ll get to having a model on display. Just like the large Lego kits from my younger years, got me pumped then too. When I got the tool out I was a little surprised it had only 1 battery, I had originally thought it came with two. Also the bag was a little wimpy; it comes in two separate parts you need to put together by the zipper. As for the tool itself it’s pretty basic, no battery indicator, speed adjustment, adjustable heads or other such features. The good news is the tool is the perfect size, it feels nice in the hand with a large trigger and full soft grip that goes all the way to the top so you can use your other hand to stabilize the head. The battery looks just like every other 12 volt lithium you have ever seen with 3 cells inside. The charger is pretty basic with standard indicator lights and 30 minute charge time.

Bosch just today announced a new Impactor for the 18V Litheon line which has 3 settings for a much wider range of applications in driving and drilling applications. I personally haven’t had a chance to test one of these units yet but obviously this would be a welcome improvement on an already great tool. In the meantime checkout the official Bosch Press Release below. The STAFDA trade show is traditionally where manufacturers come together and solicit current distributors to carry their products thus increasing their overall reach. This show does not have as many product launches as the larger and more end user focused show like the www.BuildersShow.com or www.WorldofConcrete.com but there were some cool new products that were launched or at least that were available to touch and feel for the first time. Many of the larger vendors also had private meetings to unveil future plans and products however those products weren’t ready to launch.

Some of the highlights (more to come):

The Senco Fusion was one of the bigger product launches of the show. They didn’t have any marketing material ready and currently nothing on their website but they did have several working models of the 15 gauge and 18 gauge finishing nailers which I got to try out. These should be available sometime in the first quarter 2010 with other finishers on the way shortly afterwards. The framing nailer they said was in the works but we would not see it anytime soon.        

The Milwaukee 2790-20 JobSite Radio for M12, M18, V18, V28 & NiCds was also at the show along with all the new Milwaukee Test & Measure tools. I have probably already had too many posts on these items already but it was nice to get chance to see them in action and answer a few questions like how can the radio take every kind of battery? Answer 3 different battery slots so probably not going to see any other universal tools coming.

Tired of your Flashlight dying while on the job? How about 3 times the run time. Bulbs are a pain to replace; how about 250 times the life span (50,000 hours). Already well known for their electric shears and metal nibblers Bosch Power Tools now offers a cordless metal shear option. The new Bosch PS70-2A ($337) is 12V Max shear for 18 gauge metals; able to cut up to 12 gauge aluminum and other softer metals.

I had a chance to get my hands on the new PS70 and I was extremely impressed with how powerful it was given that it is such a lightweight cordless tool. It was also extremely easy to handle, with a very sharp turning radius and just 10” overall length (very similar to the PS50-2A size). The 12V Max battery platform is extremely efficient for drills/drivers however similar to the PS50 it can be lacking for certain applications that require continuous use. The new PS70-2A might be better suited for smaller jobs or intermittent cutting vs constant use. The cordless aspect does make it incredibly covenant so you will need to weigh the pros and cons for yourself.

Where this new drill really shines is in compact spaces, with a head length of only 3-3/4” this drill can get into places most other tool can’t with the versatility of using a 3/8” chuck. You may remember the post a few weeks ago on the corded Compact Band Saw 6249-6 ($199), well the cordless M18 Band Saw 2629-22 ($399) shares the same basic sizes and dimensions. They also both use the 35-3/8” blade and feature the built-in LED work light however the corded version does have variable speed while the cordless does not.

The new compact M18 Band Saw is 45% lighter than the Deep Cut V28 Band Saw but still has a 3-1/4” capacity large enough to handle many common tasks. Th light weight compact size paired with the built in LED work light this is possibly the best band saw on the market for getting into tight spaces. The M18 also offers up to 3x faster cut time and 3x longer battery life when compared to other 18 volt cordless band saws. I just got done reading a great review, up now on www.toolsnob.com, which spent 3+ months review the new Bosch 18v cordless Impactor. It looks and sounds like this tool was really put to the test including ladder drops and many other abuses.

My only complaint with the review was it states that the Impactor with (2) slimpacks starts at $250 (Amazon) but the ad on the top of their own site says you can get the Bosch 18v Impactor, Compact Drill/Driver & (2) slimpack batteries CLPK23-180 for $219 (Ohio Power Tool). In stock now, the M12 Sub-Scanner 2290-21 was originally announced some time ago as part of the new M12 Test & Measurement tools (clamp-gun & temp-gun have been delayed). The Sub-Scanner is very very easy to use for finding studs, metal in concrete or live electrical wires. Without looking at any directions I’m pretty sure an 8 year old could operate this machine. Simply select stud or metal on the thumb control, hit CAL and you are in business. The Sub-Scanner has 4 wheels that easily glide over any surface. The only settings you can change are sound, units of measure (us/metric) and depth on stud finder. Checkout this Photo Album for more pictures.

On stud mode it shows a basic left, center, right which makes it almost idiot proof when finding studs. The “V” on the top of the tool lights up anytime you go over a live wire which is probably a pretty smart safety feature as well. You will feel very confident when you have found the center of the stud unlike some other stud detectors that simply beep or light up.

In metal mode the display is slightly more advanced but just as easy to use. It doesn’t give left or right indicators but does provide a depth reading and a Ferrous vs Non-Ferrous indicator. The tool is pretty accurate in metal mode; in the above picture you can see the rebar almost exactly 3.5” in the parking block.

How to cut PVC the easy way with this innovative tool, yet another addition to the Milwaukee M12 battery system. It is clear they are really going after the Plumbers, Electricians and other tradesman with their compact 12 volt tools and this is another perfect example. The M12 2470-21 ($199) is designed specifically for cutting PVC & PEX tubing and really isn’t made for much else, unless you wanted to remove an extra finger or two. If you are a plumber, install sprinklers or work with PVC a lot this could be a very handy tool. Currently the most popular alternative would be a manual ratcheting PVC cutter like the Ridgid RC-2375 ($87) which can get tiring if you are using it all day.

The cutter itself puts out 1,900 in-lbs torque which is plenty to get through 2” PVC in about 3 seconds. The 12 volt lithium battery is rated to make over 200 cuts per charge. Using the tool is very simple, hold down the safety and pull the variable speed trigger. Once the cut is made there is a separate quick release trigger, not sure why there is a reverse option on the cutter as the quick release works much better. The blade is very easy to change and the wrench for removing it is conveniently stored on the tool, another nice feature. Checkout this Photo Album for more images.

Will a tool like this be successful? The market for a PVC cutter is much smaller than for a handy tool like the M12 Hackzall and it will depend on if plumbers will adopt it. It is in a similar boat to the M12 Copper Cutter ($219) which seemed like a great idea but hasn’t seen a big shift away from the tried & true manual copper cutters like the Ridgid 118 ($28). However the manual copper cutters are significantly cheaper and can cut almost as quick with little effort. The price gap for the PVC cutters (manual vs M12) is much smaller, the 2470-20 (bare tool) is only $129 and the manual PVC cutters require much more effort. Hopefully the new Milwaukee 2470-21 will find lots of success among professional.

Exactly one year ago today we did a simple comparison post on some new oscillating tools coming out from Dremel and Bosch that would compete directly with the Fein Multi-Master. See Some Fein Looking Tools – Bosch PS50 & Dremel Multi-Max 9/9/08. Since then this post has held strong as our most viewed post ever. I wanted to take a second to revisit the post and perhaps add some more related links, photos & insight now that these tools have been around the block a few times.

Since the original post we added several YouTube Videos (See Below) as well as some additional posts for Bosch PS50 Accessories and Dremel Multi-Max Accessories as well as found some great post on other blogs including this post on toolsnob, one of the best I’ve seen.

Just for good measure I snapped twenty or so more pictures of these two tools and put them in this Facebook Album. Some of the points I was trying to highlight in the added photos would include the difference in size and shape, often people think the Dremel is larger but in fact the Bosch is slightly longer. The difference in Cases, the Bosch is a clear winner here. Also a few pictures of the vents, both of these tools can get hot but the Dremel is often run continuous for longer amounts of time and can get really hot. The Bosch being cordless is less equipped to run continuously so it often has at least a minute or so to cool during battery changes. One guy I spoke with who runs the Dremels all day long actually uses two Multi-Max and puts different attachments on each and use each for 20-30 minutes then switches to the other which saves him time from switching blades but also give the tools time to cool.  

The accessories are also more substantial on the Bosch; in general the Dremel accessories are smaller, thinner metal but less expensive. The sanding pads do work interchangeably but you can see in this photo the Bosch sanding pads are slightly larger. Also you will see in this picture the Bosch adaptor which allows you to use Dremel or Fein blades as well. The Dremel is pictured with a simple washer because this is what we have found many of the tradesmen using so they could use the more substantial Bosch blades with the corded Dremel tool. Funny thing is I didn’t tell them to do this (legal disclaimer: nor would I ever suggest anyone ever alter a tool or make their own adaptors for any tool or accessory ever) but amazingly several different heavy users of these tools came up with the idea on their own. Obviously end users are going to figure out work arounds, manufacturers should accept that and make things easier on everyone.

Typically I wouldn’t be that excited about a couple of new battery chargers but these are pretty cool and super convenient. Now I just wish they would do away with the standard chargers and make these the only options. If you are interested in the M12 charger 2510-20 ($79) it is in stock now at Ohio Power Tool. Previously we did a post comparing some of the preliminary stats of the Milwaukee M-Spector AV vs Explorer however at that time we were just looking at the numbers from the M-Spector AV press release. Now the M12 M-Spector AV is in stock (at Ohio Power Tool at least) and we can do a more hands on comparison and see some of the differences between the two models.

Right off the bat you’ll see a good size difference in price, Ridgid Explorer 30063 ($690) vs Milwaukee M12 M-Spector AV 2311-21 ($399). So what does the extra $291 get you with the Ridgid and is it worth it? On the surface these two models look very similar, both feature 320x240 resolutin 3.5” screens, 17mm heads and ability to record still images & videos.

The Milwaukee M12 M-Spector AV 2311-21 even has several advantages despite the cheaper price tag. By simply being a part of the Milwaukee M12 line it gets a natural advantage as many people already have batteries, chargers and other tools. The actual M12 battery also lasts longer and charges faster than the Ridgid Explorer lithium battery, although I haven’t heard any complaints about Explorer battery life, it is always a big plus to have more time between charges. The Milwaukee also features a built in microphone for recording where the Ridgid requires a separate microphone.

The Ridgid Micro Explorer 30063 as you would expect for the price, obviously have several advantages over the Milwaukee. A big feature which is very clear when comparing them side by side is the self-leveling feature on the Explorer. This automatically keeps the image right side up which can be important when you are inspecting a pipe that takes a bend or just to keep you sanity. The Milwaukee does have a 180 degree flip option (shown above) which helps sometimes but other times just goes from one awkward view to another.

The Ridgid also wins against the Milwaukee with a much better designed camera head. The Explorer has 4 LED lights vs the Milwaukee single LED light. The head is also a better design with rounded metal face vs Milwaukee’s flat plastic piece. The Milwaukee head makes me nervous because it is very common to see abuse to these heads. The tips get pushed with considerable force to make any turns and all that pressure on that plastic piece… The Explorer also comes with the magnet, hook & mirror attachments (see below) which have proven very useful for specific tasks like pulling wires, recovering dropped screws or jewelry, etc.

The final reason you might pick the Micro Explorer SeeSnake over the Milwaukee is that while Ridgid isn’t building more products to use the same battery they are building products to work specifically with the Explorer. The microDRAIN 33103 for instance is a 30’ SeeSnake reel build specifically to attach to the Explorer and do line inspections. Although the microDRAIN has only been out for a number of weeks it has already had huge success among plumbers. This is the first and only camera that can pass through a toilet trap and is powered off the Explorer power supply. The Micro Explorer also features an expansion slot for future upgrades which, my best guess, could include thermal imaging or other cool technologies.

The verdict, while these two units look similar I would argue they are different enough that there are good reasons to select each. The Ridgid Explorer is a better unit all around but for many applications the added features may not justify the added price. If you need a simple handheld inspection tool you may consider the M12 M-Spector AV 2311-21 ($399) over the Ridgid Micro 31118 ($223) or the standard M-Spector 2310-21 ($249). Also if you need to simply document the inspection with images or video but don’t necessarily need to give the video to a customer the M-Spector AV is a good option. If you are planning to provide a copy to customers I would strongly suggest the Explorer using self leveling and keep them from getting seasick from an upside down spinning videos. Also I would recommend the Ridgid Explorer to any plumber hands down. Even if you are not yet ready to invest in the 30’ microDRAIN there are many additional products that will all be based on this platform coming down the pipe and when you are talking about SeeSnake reels which can cost thousands, paying a few hundred extra now is well worth it.

The M12 Radio 2590-20 is one of the common things people will ask for when talking about new products coming for Milwaukee’s M12 tool line. Now finally I can say with mild confidence we will see these in September.  The inevitable next question is of course does it charge the M12 batteries and unfortunately the answer is still no for this generation of Milwaukee Radio. Apparently there is some patent out there with another brand that keeps that from happening. That being said there are some very exciting features for the new M12 Radio including its incredibly small size (10.5”x4”x7”), exclusive digital processor, water tight MP3 compartment and ABS shock absorbing protective housing. These compact jobsite radios should be available in stores sometime in mid-late September but you can always pre-order now from Ohio Power Tool for $99 to ensure you are the first one on the block with this cool new toy.

Last Friday was the Ridgid Roadshow’s Columbus, Ohio stop. The weather was great, the bratwursts were delicious and all the new Ridgid tools were on hand with experts from Ridgid doing demonstrations. CJ Perry, Jan/Feb from the calendar, was also on hand signing Ridgid Calendar and looking amazingly good. All in all a real nice day and everyone who came out had a great time. Some of the big hits from the show were the new stuff like the microDRAIN, DVDPak, Ratcheting Tube Cutter 118 and Soil Pipe Cutter. This was my first time seeing the new Soil Pipe Cutter 34403 ($396 Ohio Power Tool) and what a great idea. Yes that’s right Milwaukee has 2 M18 Hammer Drills the 2611-22 ($349) & 2602-22 ($299). The original M18 2611-22 is slightly larger with 650 in lbs torque while the new compact M18 2602-22 has 550 in lbs, still plenty of torque (in fact same as DeWalt’s 24V). So why 2 M18 ½” hammer drills and not say 1 SDS hammer? Milwaukee is covering all their bases with the M18 line so my guess is whatever you are looking for from a 18v cordless line is probably somewhere in the works. Personally I can’t feel the difference in weight, if there is any, the “compact” is only slightly shorter and virtually the same height, they use the same battery about the only difference I could tell beyond price & torque was the 2611 has dual led lights while the 2602 only has the 1 led light. The big advantage the new 2602-22 has currently beyond the lower price is the hot special currently from Ohio Power Tool which includes a FREE M18 Sawzall 2620-20 ($199). Obviously that deal is a limited time special, so I would take advantage now. I imagine most plumbers will stick with the Ridgid product for the digital self leveling and the fact that it works with the Ridgid MicroDrain to go through toilet traps. That being said the reason the Ridgid Explorer has been so successful is that it has opened up so many new markets. From HVAC, remodelers, electricians, mechanics, inspection, safety, maintenance staff to Biologists studying prairie dogs in Wyoming, the audience is wide open for these new borescope cameras.

The new line of Bosch Litheon 18v tools recently added some great Impact Drivers with ½” and 3/8” square drivers on the way. For a limited time you can actually get the Impact Driver tool, 25618B for only $99 from Ohio Power Tool. The new Impactors are also available in several combo kits including CLPK22-180 which includes the Hammer Drill & Impactor for only $335. There is also a 4 tool combo kit which basically swaps out a circular saw for the Impactor CLPK41-180 which is $475 (same price as the CLPK40-180 with circular saw).

I really love the new line of Bosch 18v cordless tools, tons of power, built solid, great warranty, electronic cell & motor protection and growing list of cool new tools coming. At the same time I can’t figure out why keep the 14.4v line of tools? With the 12v Max tools & SlimPack & FatPack battery options for the 18V added to the fact that the 14.4v tools are basically the same size & weight as the 18v why keep both?  The higher powers at www.OhioPowerTool.com had even priced the 18v Litheon Tools less expensive and eventually stop listing/stocking the 14.4v tools all together. With less power, priced higher, same weight and less tools in the line-up it’s a tough sell to make to someone. Wouldn’t it make more sense to focus all the effort on new 18v tools, instead of trying to make both a 14.4v & 18v tool for every application?  We want more tools, less battery platforms.

The Milwaukee 2410-22 have been shipped and those that pre-ordered from Ohio Power Tool should be receiving their orders starting today. I thought it would be a good opportunity to take a few pictures and compare the sizes and some of the features verse the 12V Bosch PS30-2A, currently the most popular compact drill/driver.

The Milwaukee is only slightly smaller than the Bosch which I had actually thought it would be even smaller yet, side-by-side. I do like the feel of the metal chuck on the Milwaukee and it has a battery gauge, which the Bosch does not. Also I like the fact that the Milwaukee stands up on the base; for some reason the Bosch is just unbalanced enough that it can’t. The Milwaukee case is the traditional red hard plastic case while the Bosch uses a smaller soft case.  The batteries for these two lines are almost identical but obviously not compatible and the LED lights on the tools are about the same. The full spec comparison is on the previous 2410-22 vs PS30-2A post, I just though it would be nice to get some photo side-by-sides out there as well.

I recently had the pleasure to visit Eric at his home and see where some of the Milwaukee Tools from Ohio Power Tool end up. By day a mild-mannered CPA, after hour a man of many talents equipped with the latest Heavy Duty gear. Some of his Milwaukee tools include: Right Angle Drill, Super Sawzall, Jig Saw, 7-1/4” Circular Saw, ½” Drill, Orbital Sander, M12 Drill/Driver, V28 Hammer Drill, 2-1/4” Router Kit, Radio, M12 M-Spector, M12 Hackzall, M18 Compact Drill, M18 Impact Driver, most of the accessory kits and currently waiting on some of the new 9” Diamond Grit Sawzall Blades. While his setup was cleaned up for the visit, he does keep all the tool kits and accessory kits on the wall as you see here. Eric said it keeps everything out of the way, maximizing space and when he needs a couple tools for a project everything is right at his fingers to grab and go. He has had many tools over the years but fell in love with the Milwaukee 7-1/4” circular saw he received as a gift several years ago, really impressed with how well it stood up he bought another Milwaukee and another. Now he doesn’t even consider buying another brand if Milwaukee makes a similar tool.    

Some of his recent projects include finishing the basement I was in, a real nice job by the way, adding a deck out back, finishing the garage and currently working on an IPE Wood deck at his father’s house.  He is also a bit of a mechanic and did some nice work on a 1991 Mustang 5.0 which he sold earlier this year. Another thing that really impressed me was his Ingersoll Rand compressor set up which can be used in the basement next to the workbench but he also ran a line and hookup in the garage, it is a nice system, I’m jealous.

In support of the recent Power Tool Drag Races (I promise no more mentions again until next year) Skil Power Tools donated a 4 Tool Lithium Ion Combo Kit which was the Grand Prize for the event. We are grateful for the support and hope they will be involved again in the future. I couldn’t help myself I had to crack the box open and give these tools a once over, just to see how well they perform.

I put them to the test building a few of the first sections of the race track. Originally the track was build for outdoor use and looked like this (below left), later we moved it indoors and took the base supports off for a more level surface on the concrete. To keep things simple we built the track in 8’ sections so all that was required was to rip the plywood and stager the 2x4 rails which were later screwed together for the race. This way after the race we could break the track back down to the 8’ sections and store it for next year.

The 3/8” Drill/Driver has been a long awaited addition to the Milwaukee M12 line. The 2410-22 ($149) comes with 2410 tool, (2) M12 batteries, charger & case but the drill/driver tool is also available as 2410-20 ($98) which is just the tool by itself. The closest competition for the new drill/driver would be the Bosch 12V Max PS30-2A ($139) which has been out for over a year and is currently leading the 12V compact drill/driver market. Milwaukee is trying hard to improve upon the already successful PS30 design and create a compelling reason to pick their compact drill over anyone else.

In comparing the stats you can see how Milwaukee has worked to build a better tool… at least when it comes to the numbers. Obviously with an extra year of development time they are going to make it faster with more torque. It is also awesome to see that the M12 is over an inch shorter than the Bosch, making it even easier to carry in the tool belt. Adding the metal sleeve on this tool also makes me happy and think back to the introduction of the first generation Bosch PS20 when the tough sell was convincing people such a small tool had a place among professional (see: These Ain’t No Kids Toys 8/23/2007). Clearly we have come a long way and with Milwaukee adding so many M12 tools aimed specifically at Plumbers & Electricians I think everyone has embraced the idea 12 volt tools defiantly have their place among the pros.

Once I get my hands on the Milwaukee M12 2410-22 we can do a more hands on comparison of the two different models and see if the Milwaukee stands out as much as the stats might indicate. Stay tuned.

I recently got the chance to test the Bosch 18v Impactor Driver along with the 2 leading competitors (Makita & DeWalt) cordless Impact Drivers. One feature that continues to stand out in my mind was the electronic cell & motor protection which we got to see in action during the stress test. The test went like this, several extremely large bolts were lined up that none of the drivers could possibly move; then we got to try and drive the bolts with each tool. None of them could move the bolts and after a few seconds one of the competitor’s impacts started smoking and almost caught on fire. Another which had “protection” simply turned off and would not come back on. It turns out you need to find the charger and recharge the battery to get it to work again. Not very convenient if you are on the jobsite. The Bosch Impactor turned off when the electronic protection kicked on but a few seconds later it was back, working great, no fussing around. The Milwaukee M12 Sub-Scanner 2290-21 is due out in July and will be able to detect wood studs, pipes, AC wires and rebar in concrete up to 6” deep. Currently the closest competing product would be the Bosch DMD4k Multi-Detector which can also detect various types of materials but only detect rebar in concrete 4” deep. The design of the Milwaukee is also much easier for scanning large areas with the 4 wheel design, it will role across a surface with ease, perfect for mapping out & drilling large areas of concrete.

I recently saw a demo of the new Rotozip Tile-Dock and CR18L Cordless Rotozip, which uses the Bosch 18v Litheon batteries. There were several things I though were interesting about the demo starting with the Tile-Dock TD1-10. I’ve never seen anything like it, although I’m not a professional floor guy, but the few tiling projects I’ve done this would have been big help. Lightweight easy to carry, stores all the accessories and has a dust collection hook-up which is becoming more and more a priority these days with new laws and regulations. Obviously the Tile Dock could be used with any tool cutting tile such as a diamond grit hole saw or diamond sawzall blade.

The Rotozip CR18L had some nice features as well. I love that it uses the Bosch 18v Lithium batteries because the last thing anyone wants is another battery system, this way you’ll always have extra batteries ready. Also the fact that the diamond X-bits don’t need to be cooled with water is very convenient with a lot less setup / cleanup. This is not the tool for making the full tile strait cuts but almost every job is going to require several curved cuts, notch outs and/or holes made. This is a great solution.

The New surface temperature Temp-Guns from Milwaukee are available as part of the M12 system or available for use with standard Alkaline batteries. All of the available units are built for professional use with 1.5% accuracy range, K-Type thermocouple input and <500ms response time. There are however several differences in the models other than the power system.

Laser Temp-Gun 2266-20

At a lower price the 2266-20 Temp-Gun has a temp range from -20 to 932 F, a 12 to 1 distance to spot ratio and a slide rail system that allows accessories such as the voltage detector / light tool to be attached and used as part of the Temp-Gun. This gun meets and/or beats basically every competitor even up to the $200 price range and with the added accessories can offers features well beyond anything else.   

M12 Laser Temp-Gun 2277-21

The M12 2277-21 Temp-Gun is truly in a class by itself. With an expanded temperature range of -40 to 1472 F and a 40 to 1 distance to spot ratio, you get improved safety and accuracy in even the most demanding situations. The M12 unit also features built-in LED work light and non-contact voltage detection. The cherry on top is that the M12 Temp-Gun 2277-21 features humidity and dew point measurements. If you currently own other M12 tools and don’t need the additional M12 battery, case and charger, you can also get the M12 Temp-Gun as a tool only, see 2277-20.

Hopefully this helps clarify the difference between the Milwaukee Temp-Guns. As you may have already seen from the two posts yesterday Milwaukee has a lot of new test & measure tools coming in July. Just to clarify these are not some re-branded cheap import items painted red. Milwaukee has been working on these new tools for some time and has hired industry leaders, in some case from top competitors, to build these new test & measuring tools from the ground up. The group systematically looked at each tool individually, compared it with all the competition and found new ways to improve the functionality through extensive interviews with real professionals in the trade.

Digital Multimeter 2217-20

The new digital multimeter 2217-20 from Milwaukee has several features most competitor models do not currently offer. One problem Milwaukee looked to combat is the “Ghost Voltage” phenomenon where energized lines create a magnetic field affecting other wires in the bundle resulting in higher voltage readings than actually exist in the individual wires. The Lo-Z feature eliminates this problem and gives accurate readings to the user. In addition to stronger more durable housing, easier one handed controls and larger clear displays the 2217-20 also features a slide rail system to add proprietary accessories, such as the Volt Detector / Work Light mentioned in our previous post, for additional functionality.  

Fork Meters – Electrician 2205-20 & HVAC/R 2206-20

Both of the new Folk Meters incorporate several features most competitors do not such as non-contact voltage detection and LED work lights. Some differences in the two models are the 2205-20 electrician’s model features the Lo-Z measurement, mentioned above to eliminate “Ghost Voltage”, while the HVAC/R 2206-20 feature DC microamps & contact temperature reading more commonly used in those industries.

Another new Milwaukee tool that is part of the new Test & Measure line is the 2201-20 Voltage Detector. You may think voltage detectors are all the same but the Milwaukee features options not available with most competitors. The 2201-20 features a built in LED work light which is 3 times stronger than the closest competitor with a light. The unit will also slide into the Laser Temp-Gun and Digital Multimeter to increase the tools performance and usability. I haven’t seen these units in person so I’m not sure how that works yet but will be happy to report more on how exactly that works once I get my hands on one.

This unit is relatively inexpensive at $25, available for PRE-ORDER now on Ohio Power Tool. The other 2 Clamp Meters have a more tradition design that work off standard alkaline batteries. The HVAC/R model 2236-20 and the Electrical model 2237-20 are more similar than the M12 Clamp-Guns with the only difference that the HVAC unit has Contact Temperature reading while the Electrical unit features Frequency reading.

All 4 new Milwaukee Clamp Meters feature a LED work light, true RMS, Continuity and Capacitance. The difference between the M12 & Alkaline other than the obvious shape most notably include CAT III 1000V / CAT IV 600V (M12) vs CAT III 600V (Alkaline) and Jaw Size, 1.57” (M12) vs 1.3” (Alkaline).

All the new Milwaukee Test & Measuring tools are expected out sometime in July 2009 after the current M12 Free Tool promotions have ended but it is possible new promotions could be available at that time, although we haven’t heard anything yet. Typically Milwaukee will run a promotion for a free tool or battery deal a few times a year with a lot of success. Currently they are running this deal on all their cordless tools simultaneously as well as launching several new products.

The M12 deal applies to most tools and combo kits in the line up although I did not see the M-spector or Micro Driver on the list. This deal is available until June 30^th.  Milwaukee has also included 2 new products that work with this deal, the 2410-22 3/8” M12 drill/driver and 2320-21 M12 2-beam plumb laser level. This deal was available last month and runs through June 30^th along with the Milwaukee M12 Deal. This deal is a little more limited than the M12 or M18 deals. It only applies to the 4-tool combo, 3-tool combo and V28 Hammer Drill. The free tool option is also more limited to the ½” square impact, V28 battery or V28 wet/dry vac. The best deal here is the Impact ($271) but with a new combo kit a 3^rd battery is also a good choice. The reason these deals are so rich is simple. Statistically people don’t take the time to send in the mail-in rebate. Commonly 25% or less of mail-in rebates from tool vendors get used. Why??? I have no clue but if you take advantage you can potentially see up to 40% back in FREE TOOLS. Think of it this way, Milwaukee is putting 10% of all sales back into a rebate pot. If only 1 in 4 take advantage, that 1 guy gets a much bigger deal and their marketing teams get to field day. Be that guy, send in the rebate and get awesome stuff free.

Wow this is a cool new unexpected item from Milwaukee Tools. Now you can use your Milwaukee M12 batteries to charge other devices such as a cell phone, ipods, iphones, laptops(?) or any other device that would work off a USB or car charger. They claim to be able to charge 5 small electronic devices (two at a time) with the new Power Pack unit. Awesome addition to the line up guys! The Bosch 36V ½” Hammer Drill is every bit as powerful as any corded model you are likely to have in your arsenal but with the obvious advantage of being cordless. Typically the Bosch 18636-02 kit which includes 2 FatPack batteries sells from around $400. Currently there is a very limited supply available from Ohio Power Tool for $199. These batteries alone are worth $150 each and supply seemingly endless power, in most cases 2 fully charged batteries will get you through almost any day.

Recently Skil launched a new line of Lithium Ion 18 volt tools. The price points seemed to be aimed to directly take on the other DIY targeted brands that are very popular at Lowe’s and Home Depot such as Ryobi, Ridgid and Porter Cable. As mentioned in the last post, Bosch was nice enough to invite me to their US headquarters last week to check out the recently launched products and stuff being launched in the very near future. Some of the stuff was top secret so unfortunately I probably shouldn’t mention anything about time travel, teleportation or cold fusion power tools, I may or may not have seen. We did get a chance to play with a very interesting technology for powering cordless devices without a typical charger. The technology was launched at CES over a month ago but it was really impressive to see in action.

You may have seen a similar technology for powering cell phones and iPods which will likely become very common within the next year or so. Through a joint effort partnership with Fulton Innovations, Energizer, Motorola, Bosch and several other companies a stronger system has been developed for powering products that require a much higher amount of energy like kitchen appliances, laptops and Bosch Power Tools. Simply set an eCoupled device on the plate and it will automatically detect the device and power it with the correct amount of energy. Several completely different items with different power requirements can all be run/charged simultaneously without a problem.

The system for Bosch Power Tools would be built into the batteries, so the tools will most likely remain the same and while new tool kits may feature the technology it is likely an upgrade kit will be available for existing tools. So don’t worries, your new 18V Litheon tools are not going to be obsolete anytime soon. To see how the system works checkout this youtube video of working drill and combo kit units.

Milwaukee has really gotten serious about the cordless impact market. I think they may now the most complete line of cordless impact wrenches on the market, even surpassing automotive giants like Ingersoll Rand IQv and Chicago Pneumatic.

Available May 1 there are two new ½” cordless Milwaukee M18 high torque impact drivers. The two new models are the 2662-22 & 2663-22 which are almost identical tools with the only different in the anvil. The anvil on the M18 2662-22 features a Pin Detent, while the 2663-22 uses a Friction Ring. Personally I would say get the friction ring version, as the new rings are like $1.20 and very easy to get and replace.

Both of the new Milwaukee versions feature 450 ft-lbs torque, highest of any cordless impacts on the market. The Milwaukee M18 line currently features several other impacts including ¼” hex, 3/8” square as well as the current ½” impact 2652-22 which also features the pin detent type anvil. The current ½” impact is has a higher RPM & IPM speed but lower torque, below 200 ft-lbs. In addition to these 5 models of M18 impacts there will also be a ¾” square and 7/16” hex available later this summer. The ¾” will have tons of juice for a cordless at 525 ft-lbs but a good ¾” pneumatic would be around 1,200 ft-lbs so keep that in mind.

Renting vs Buying

It can be difficult to predict the future and determine what is going to be best for your needs in the long run. There are a few basic things to look at which will help guide you in making the right financial decision for what is right for you personally or your business.

Frequency – How often will you need this item, what is the likelihood the usage could change in the future?
Urgency – When you need this item is it for something urgent or can usage be planned and therefore group projects together.
Versatility – Can this equipment do multiple jobs; are there different options that you might want down the road?
Availability – Is this item even available in your area to rent? It might answer your question real quick if you can’t even rent it.
Maintenance – Do you have someone to maintain/repair the equipment, what are the typical repair costs; could there be problems if the item sat dormant for the winter?
New Business – Is there additional business you could do if you had this new equipment? Are you missing opportunity on current jobs where you refer business to others?
Technology – How quickly does the technology change? In 2-4 years will something better be available and you will need to upgrade?

Using Rentals to Grow Your Business

Renting is a great way to expand your business without the costs of additional equipment. For instance if a plumber who owns his own business wants to do pipe and drain inspections he might look at adding a Ridgid SeeSnake for a cost of $4000-$10,000. Then the risk is the equipment might go unused for weeks at a time until he builds that part of his business. On the other hand he could offer these services and simply rent a SeeSnake (from $125) as needed until the frequency goes up and buying becomes more attractive. During slower economic times it can become harder to secure financing and/or justify purchasing new equipment but the absolute worst thing you could do is turn away business. Shop your local rental house and know what inventory is available and what the rates are so you can speak confidently about your capabilities and build those rates right into any quotes. Also most places will offer discounts if you are planning to rent the tools several times per month.

Last year around this time we did a post; Women vs Men comparing gifts we typically get ladies to what an equal gift for a guy would be. This year I though a simple unisex list would work because I know there are lots of girls out there that really want power tools just as much as guys… I just don’t happen to be with one.

Checking out the Milwaukee websites for Europe I came across the Milwaukee Laser Range Finder LM60. This looks like a similar tool to the Bosch DLR165K range finder. The 60 meter range on this tool is just slightly more than the Bosch 165 feet range, at about 195 feet if my math is right. I would think if it’s successful in Europe it will make its way state side although there has been no mention of this tool so it would not be within the first half of this year.

Laser device for higher precision - Milwaukee LM60 makes measuring simpler, faster and more precise

Skilled craftsmen only achieve perfect working results if they have taken precise measurements in the planning phase. The common measuring methods using a folding rule or an ultrasonic device are awkward and often imprecise. The LM60 laser device from heavy-duty manufacturer Milwaukee makes things easier, enabling distance, areas and room volume to be exactly measured indoors and outdoors.

With just one turn of the hand the device is ready to take measurements. Even if the distances to be measured are long, for example in buildings under construction, only one person is needed to carry out the measurements. The device measures distances up to 60 metres with accuracy of +/- 1,5 millimetres. By comparison, conventional ultrasonic measurement devices are 50 times less precise and will only measure up to 15 metres.

The measurement result is immediately shown on the large, clearly laid out display, and built-in illumination enables results also to be read in the dark. What’s more, the Milwaukee LM60 shows the measurements in the metric system or in inches. Indirect measurements can be made using the device or individual measurements added. If, for example, the entire floor area of an apartment or house has to be measured the addition function makes it easy to quickly total up the various measurements of the individual rooms.

Thanks to its compact design the LM60 is ideal for measuring places which are difficult to access. The laser beam takes precise measurements in the smallest corners. Furthermore, the LM60 is suitable for use outdoors. The laser dot and targeting assistance make it possible to precisely hit the desired targets even at a considerable distance. The robust housing is totally rubber dust protected making it suitable for tough assignments on building sites.

With its handy size the LM60 fits into any pocket and is easy to take anywhere thanks to its strap and the bag supplied. Further practical characteristics of the LM60 are the battery-saving automatic-off function and the low-battery display. The batteries are also supplied with the device.

The Ridgid microEXPLORER has been one of the most popular new tools in recent months. Never before have you had so much functionality in such a small inexpensive piece of equipment. This should be a standard piece of hardware for most tradesmen. Unfortunately it will not replace many of the jobs of the bigger 200’ SeeSnakes when it comes to seeing in lines and locating the problem.

The Dremel Multi-Max has received plenty of positive press from tool blogs, forums and national news sources and for good reason. This tool has been a huge success for Dremel, possibly bigger than they expected. It has been eating into Fein sales of the MutiMaster, I haven’t even seen the infomercials recently. One problem for the Dremel however is that it is not yet really compatible with Fein accessories. The Dremel tool does have a good selection of accessories at very affordable prices however they need to add many more and until these are released over the next year, Fein still has some nice specialty attachments not available from Dremel.

The Bosch PS50 Multi-X was smart enough to include an adaptor with every tool which allows them to work with Dremel & Fein accessories. The Bosch PS50, a very well built tool, has been less popular than the Dremel Multi-Max simply because the cordless oscillating market is much smaller than the corded version. Run times for sanding and scraping are pretty low however nothing beats the convenience of cordless for certain jobs. Bosch may also come out with its own corded version within the next year but I have not heard anything official yet.     

If you don’t want to wait until Dremel comes out with an official adaptor, which I’m sure is on the way, you can always make one. Recently I saw a post from a fellow Power Tool Blog on Tool-Rank.com where they make an adaptor from an old Dremel blade. From the pictures you can see the Fein blades fits perfectly over the Dremel mounts but with nothing to hold it in place it just won’t work. An additional washer of the right size could do the job but this keeps everything much more secure and what else are you going to do with a used Multi-Max blade?

Recently I had the opportunity to work with Construction Distribution Magazine and report on some of the new products that were featured at the STAFDA trade show. 1.      PS50 Bosch Multi-X
Oscillating tools are the most popular tool gift for 2008 holidays. Fein owned the market for several years with their MultiMaster but at $300-400 outside of most people’s budget. Bosch’s new cordless Multi-X expands nicely on their 12v Max line up and is available in 2 models :PS50-2A ($179) & PS50-2B ($199).

2. 2420-22 Milwaukee M12 Hackzall
The new Hackzall is a very cool new tool. Basically a mini version of the popular Sawzall reciprocating saw this tool is great for pros and DIY guys alike. The Milwaukee M12 tool line up has been expanded tremendously and there are combo kits and free tool promotions that make the Hackzall very attractive. Price is $179 on Ohio Power Tool.  

3. 30063 Seesanke MicroExplorer
Probably outside more people’s gift giving price range at $690 the MicroExplorer is an investment. For pros it’s probably one of the best gifts you could give yourself. The inspection camera can record images and videos along with many other features including digital self-leveling.   

4. T308B Bosch Jigsaw
At under $10 per 5 pack these saw blades might make a great stocking stuffer for any woodworker or handyman. Unlike typical jigsaw blades these extra clean cut saw blades leave you wood cuts burr free and practically a finished edge. At only a few cents more per blade who wouldn’t get the T308B jigsaw blades?  

5. 2611-24 M18 2 Tool Combo Kit (free battery)
Milwaukee has long been known for some of the best cordless tools in the market. The new M18 hammer drill puts them well above the competition with 650 lb. torque. For a limited time the hammer drill includes the M18 Impact tool for free ($179 value)! 6. IQv144K IR Cordless Impact, drill, light (free socket set)
Ingersoll Rand, one of the top brands among mechanics, has been known for their air impact tools for quite some time. IR has proven they can also be one of the top brands for cordless tools. The new 14.4v IQv kit includes 2 batteries, 3/8” impact, drill, charger and LED flash light which will run for hours. Price on the kit is $398, for a limited time that also includes a free 3/8” socket set.  

7. 36614-02 Bosch 14.4v Drill (free battery)
Recently Bosch introduced all new 18v and 14.4v lithium tools. These have all been really great performers but the 14.4v Compact Tough drill for $199 has been a real standout light weight drill/driver. These new tools are high quality, made in Switzerland and come with a free 3^rd battery (mail-in rebate) until December 31^st. If you are looking at light weight compact drills it would be hard to look past this one.

Earlier this week a few of us from Ohio Power Tool went to the STAFDA ( Specialty Tools & Fasteners Distributors Association) trade show in Denver, CO. We had a chance to talk with the guys from Ridgid Tool and get some video of the new Ridgid Seesnake Micro Explorer. It would be nice if they would actually ship these and then we could all get a first hand look at it but in the mean time hopefully this video will give you a little better idea of how the menus work and some of the new features.

We are accepting pre-orders for the Micro Explorers 30036 at Ohio Power Tool. I am confident these are going to be in any day now. Apparently there were some software errors that caused the most recent delay but the word on the street is these have been resolved and are shipping shortly.

We previously reviewed these two tools and even did some comparisons in a YouTube video. My initial though was that they would probably sell pretty evenly as each tool has its advantages. So far however the Dremel has proven to be the favorite of the two selling out almost as quick as they are coming in. The accessories have also been hard to keep in stock. This will be one of the hottest guy gifts for the 2008 holiday season, no question.

The Dremel Multi-Max 6300-01 is the cheaper of the two by almost half at $99. I think that might be the ideal price for most people to make an impulse purchase even if they know little about these oscillating tools.

Until the end of the year you can get free tools from Bosch simply by ordering the accessories you would need anyway. Each $250 increment gets you to the next level of free tools. With a $1000 order you can even get a 4 tool 18v Combo Kit. Yea, a grand is a lot to spend on new Bosch DareDevil Spade Bits or T308B super clean jigsaw blades which have been very popular items recently. However there are lots of accessories that will get you at least to the $250 free grinder pretty quickly. Many of the concrete products such as the SDS Max attachments and Brute hex point chisels add up pretty quickly with any quantity. The Bosch Speedwave Diamond Abrasive Saw Blades are another product which range in price from $59-$114 for the larger 9” blade. These blades work on a worm drive saw or grinders and they do a terrific job of cutting cinder blocks and other hard materials. Bosch batteries of every variety are also included in this offer so if you need to pick up a few extra batteries it can all add up pretty quick.

Recently both Bosch and Milwaukee came out with new 18 volt lithium ion tools. Milwaukee Tools first 18v lithium line was one of the first to market with the V18 tools however after these tools were release other brands had a chance to copy their designs. Bosch Tools on the other hand stuck with the 18v NiCd tools and focused on thier 10.8v and 36v lithium tools. Both these new lines of 18v tools put them head and shoulders above the competition but which of the two is on top?

Today we are just looking at the 18v Cordless Hammer Drills, in this comparison specifically the Milwaukee M18 2611-24 and the Bosch 17618-01. Each product was laboratory tested against the other competition available at the time (a few months ago) so both tools are making the same claims of best in class torque, battery life and construction. Unfortunately I don’t have a lab in the back to redo all these tests comparing the two against each other but hopefully I can provide a little more insight.

Both units have 650 in/lbs torque (above any other brand on the market) although the Bosch unit has 2050 RPM rating vs. Milwaukee at 1700 RPM. Both units also have free battery mail-in rebate offers until the end of the year however Milwaukee is giving away the larger XC battery while Bosch is giving away their smaller Slim Pack battery. Both have a two battery system but on the M18 tools the smaller battery will not fit on the hammer drill or saws. On price, overall the Bosch 17618-01 is cheaper at $305 while the Milwaukee 2611-24 is $349. Milwaukee is including a free impact driver 2650-20 ($179) with the hammer drill, for a limited time, so big points there. Warranties are also pretty similar with 2 year battery replacement on each.

In size comparison the Milwaukee is slightly smaller which you can see in the pictures. The weight for the M18 is also lighter at 5.55 lbs vs Bosch at 5.75. If weight is a big factor the Bosch can use the slim pack batteries which will reduce the weight below the Milwaukee but battery life will be half. Both units feature a LED light but Bosch has the light on the base which illuminates the work surface a little better.

The biggest problem I discovered in looking at these two drills side by side was with the Bosch. There is no power gauge on their batteries. I’m not sure why this was left off, perhaps it makes the battery smaller but it is an extremely useful feature I can’t believe was left off. Bosch has the feature on their 36v tools so I am really baffled why they would leave it off the 18v. The charger is a 30 minute charge which works with 14.4v as well but even the charger only gives a simple charging or full indication not a power level.

For my money I am buying the Milwaukee M18 with free Impact and mail-in rebate for a 3rd XC battery. The deal is right and I just can’t see not having a power gauge on my lithium ion tools. If you have 3 batteries and 1 charger how are you going to keep track of which battery has power and which doesn’t? I really like the Bosch as well, it still has more power and longer run time than any other competitor but when they are so close like that a free M18 Impact Driver will make all the difference.

Recently we had several manufacturers visit Ohio Power Tool as part of the annual Tent Sale & Tool Expo. As you might assume this was a very interactive event and everyone had an opportunity to test out many of the new tools. Luckily it was terrific weather and all the vendors could set up tables and tent in the front parking lot. Below are a few short video clips of the new Milwaukee M12 tools that were on hand.

The M12 Copper Tubing Cutter - 2471-22 ($219)

This is a very innovative product and easy to use. There is a switch next to the trigger which locks the open end so you can put the tube in place. Once the copper tube is in the tool flip the switch and pull the trigger. The tool does have a slight tendency to want to pull itself down but with a firm grip it makes a very clean cut.

The M12 Hackzall – 2420-22 ($179)   

The new Hackzall is a very cool new product for the Milwaukee M12 line. At first glance it looks simply like a Sawzall with a little less power but really it is much more. It can do a wide range of different job where you might use a jigsaw or Rotozip. At the same time it’s good for cutting wood, metal and PVC pipe as well. The video below is just one of the examples of a different type of application for the Hackzall where it is simulating cutting a hole for an electrical box in drywall.

We continued to be amazed at the incredible amount of product development coming from Bosch Accessories. These guys are systematically reinventing all the basic accessories we use everyday and coming out with some really cool new products.

Recently the Bosch Big Blue Team spent the day at Ohio Power Tool and one of the new products that really impressed a lot of people were the DareDevil Spade Bits. Most people don’t think about their spade bits that much and just buy whatever is cheapest at the local big box. The new Bosch spade bits however are almost like a different tool. The DareDevil bit pulls itself through wood without any effort at all which really makes repetitive drilling significantly easier especially at an angle or overhead.

Another patented feature of the DareDevil is the contoured paddle.  This wave-like shape speeds up chip removal, adding to the speed of the bit.  The combination of these two features creates astonishing results.  In independent testing, the DareDevil was 2.4x faster and required 53% less force than the Irwin Blue Groove*. 

It doesn’t end there. While spade bits are not expected to produce anything beyond average hole quality, the DareDevil is not your average spade bit.  The patented spur and reamer design is unique in that it not only scores the wood for a clean entry hole, but also has angled cutting edges that ream the hole for reduced breakout, leaving a cleaner exit hole than any competitive bit.

The wait is over on almost all the Milwaukee M12 & M18 tools. M12 Hackzall, M12 Copper Cutter, M18 Hammer Drill w/Free impact, M18 Combo Kits and most everything else has arrived in the past few days at Ohio Power Tool. The Ingersoll Rand IQv Cordless power tool line has found a serious following among the automotive crowds and many others. These tools are engineered for use in professional shop and manufacturing facilities. The whole system is very intelligently designed with cheaper NiCd and Lithium batteries that work with each voltage of tools, all which share the single charger and flashlight that work with all of them.

Unfortunately we did not have a lot of time to go through all the features or test the grout remover which I had hoped to try. It will give you a pretty good idea of the size and what it can do. The incredibly popular Seesnake Micro 25643 is saying good bye, however it will be replace by the 2nd generation Micros. The new Micros features two versions; the Seesnake Micro Camera 17mm 31118 & Seesnake Micro Camera 9.5mm 31123. These new models both share the 3’ (31128) & 6’ (31133) cable extensions with the Seesnake Explorer. I am not sure many people would need to use both a Micro & Explorer but it could come in handy if you were going to upgrade in the future or for companies where there may be several units floating around.

Some of the new features for the Micro include new thumb controls which make the units much easier to operate, new hard case to protect the units, obviously the option of 17mm or 9.5mm heads and probably the most compelling new feature which is Video Output. The cameras come with a 3’ RCA cable which can be hooked up to a VCR, DVD, larger monitor, computer, or any other device that can receive the yellow video imput from an RCA cable. This would allow you to make videos or capture images using the Micro. I am not sure why you would select the Micro over the Explorer if you need to capture video, as the Explorer has built in recording with much higher resolution (320x240 Explorer vs 234x160 Micro). Lugging around a full size VCR might be a pain as well. If however you just need the video-out feature 1 in 20 times certainly this would be handy.

The new Seesnake Micros are coming in now but in the 1^st generation Micro 25643 is also currently still available and with a bonus of a free 3’ extension (mail-in rebate). If you do not need the video-out feature I would recommend picking up the current model with the extra extension but you better do it quick because these units are almost gone.

Recently we have had some questions about the release of the Bosch 18V Litheon Drills and when the saws and other tools would be available. The answer is they will be available at the same time as the Drills in early October… sort of. The 4 tool combo kit with the hammer drill 17618, circular saw CCS180, reciprocating saw CRS180 and flashlight CFL180 will be here in October. The individual units will however not be available for sale until sometime later, probably next year. Below is the basic info on each tool:

The CLPK40-180 4 tool combo kit is $549, priced exactly the same as the new Milwaukee M18 kit 2690-24 which also has a hammer drill, circular saw, reciprocating saw and flashlight. We will do an in-depth head to head once the tools come in but from the numbers it looks like the decision would be some what based on brand loyalty. Milwaukee has now shipped the 2691-22 M18 Compact Combo Kit ($299) which includes the compact drill 2601 and the ¼” hex impact 2650. The kit also comes with 2 compact batteries, hard case and the M18 charger. The new M18 impact is a real winner for Milwaukee, it has the most power, longest run time, while still being one of the lightest in its class. The M18 tools are the second generation Lithium Ion from Milwaukee Tool and improve upon what was already one of the most popular 18 volt lithium tool lines in the business with the V18 tools. We can be pretty confident at this point the rest of the M18 Tools and Combo kits will be shipping by the October 1^st launch.

 Bosch has recently launched a line of Glass & Tile drill bits which range in size from 1/8” to 1”. These bits are ideal for bathroom installations, fastening mirrors, setting screws in tile, relief holes in glass, holding signage and much more. The new Bosch bits feature carbide tips for long life, reinforced heads to prevent cracking, precision ground tips which prevents bit walking and they are the only company to offer up to 1” size. The 8 piece drill bit set ($38) is a no brainer even if you only need 2 or 3 sizes. Of course you can get the set or any individual bit from OhioPowerTool.com.    

 I though this might also be a great time to test the New Bosch PS30-2a 3/8” drill as these drills will ship within the next few days. The PS30 handled these glass and tile bits amazingly well as you can see in the above video. We also tested a ¾” Rapid Feed Spade bit and different size drill bits all with outstanding performance.

I’m sure most people are fully aware of the new compact tools being launched by both Milwaukee and Bosch, and possibly tired of hearing about them. Apparently I can’t shut about it but there is a lot happening all at once after what seems like a long drought of no new tools. Obviously these tools have a huge potential for gifts around the holidays so it’s no wonder they delayed the launch until October just in time to get the word out and all the products on the shelves for holiday shopping season.

Finally I think we have the full picture of what tools are available for each of these lines at least until first quarter 2009. At this point I think it’s probably more important to look at the full lines vs. simply comparing tool for tool as we did previously with Bosch Pocket Driver vs. Milwaukee Micro Driver. When it comes down to it most people are probably going to assume the drivers, impacts and flashlights will work fairly similar with both lines. These will probably not drive the buying decisions but the two lines do have some different tools available that are very unique.

They match up fairly evenly with 6 tools each but some big differences in what they do. In just looking at the unique tools Milwaukee has the M-Spector, Pipe Cutter & Hackzall while Bosch has the i-Drive, 3/8” Drill & Multi-X. My first reaction is that the Bosch products have more broad appeal, if we are talking about the regular user or DIY guy I think these might make more sense. The Milwaukee products however are focused on professionals and do a good job of using the small size to create great new supplemental tools for someone who already has an 18 volt drill and other tools. The ace in the hole for Bosch is really the Multi-X PS50, there has been a lot of buzz about this one. The tool has so many uses and really can do jobs no other tool can. If you are already committed to the Milwaukee M12 line you can always pick up the Dremel Multi-Max for $99 which can tackle the same basic jobs but it has also got a cord.     

Milwaukee has some nice multiple tool kits which make a lot of sense as the tool only versions of most of these new tools will not be available until later (I am assuming after the end of the year) and how many batteries and chargers do you really need. Also I hate to discredit the Hackzall, I think this thing has a ton of use for everyone; it’s very powerful, incredibly easy to use, part jigsaw, part Rotozip, part Sawzall and very small. The 2490-22 kit with Micro Driver and Hackzall for $249 will be extremely popular for Pros and DIY guys alike.   

It’s a very tough call. I don’t think the decision would be that easy for anyone. For plumbers, HVAC, electricians and other tradesman I would have to give an advantage to the Milwaukee M12 line for some of their specialty tools. For everyone else I think it’s going to be hard to pass up the PS50 Multi-X tool. This thing is going to be all over those “Top 10 Gifts for a Guy” lists this holiday.

For the month of September at Ohio Power Tool you can get free shipping on all Ridgid seesnakes, locators, inspection equipment and transmitters. That includes pre-sales on the Ridgid Explorer, Seesnake Micro and all the accessories. In addition to free shipping, the Micro also includes a free 3’ extension 26658 which normally sell for around $50. The free extension deal is good until November 15^th which is about the same time the second generation Micro will be released. The new Micro will get updated thumb controls and a different hard plastic case but it will also be slightly more expensive ($239 same price as Milwaukee M-Spector) honestly I would rather probably have the current model with a free 3’ extension. For professionals you might just want to step it up and get the Seesnake Explorer ($690) to have the ability to record images & video. In very non-customary fashion some of the Milwaukee M12 tool kits have actually shipped well before the target October 1^st launch date. After previous delays in receiving new products I think Milwaukee has final figured out the formula: under promise, over deliver. These two kits are the M12 launch specials and will only be available for a short time. Don’t be expecting these to be around after October anywhere.  

The M-Spector kit 2310-21P features the two tools currently available but for $269 that is about $100 less than their individual price. It includes a case which fits both tools together, 2 batteries, charger, M-Spector & Micro Driver.

The M12 Impact Kit 2490-23 features 2 new tools the impact & flashlight as well as the Micro Driver currently available. The individual impact and flashlight will still not be available until the official October 1st launch but you can get them early with this kit. Price on this kit is $199 at Ohio Power Tool.  

These two M12 Launch kit are available now but the other M12 tools and kits will not be available until October 1, and now I have a little more faith we will actually get them on time. The launch kits will again only be available for a very short time, my guess is these will all be gone very soon.

Now where have we seen tools that look like these before? It’s no secret that many companies have been waiting for the day they can legally bring products to market that can compete directly with the Fein MultiMaster. Fein has been unbelievably successful with these tools and if you have ever used one you will know exactly why. I even saw a MultiMaster Tool infomercial. Fein makes great professional quality tools however they are definitely on the pricier side which may keep these tools out of many people’s hands.

There are two new models that will compete directly with the Fein MultiMaster. Both Bosch & Dremel have new tools that will be significantly cheaper but do the same basic multi tool jobs. The Bosch will work with the existing cordless 12V max batteries while the Dremel Multi-Max will be a corded model.

Dremel Multi-Max vs. Fein MultiMaster

The Dremel Multi-Max will start at $99 vs. Fein MultiMaster Start at $245. Both are similar in size and have the same max oscillation per minute at 21,000 OPM. They both can use either brands attachments but the Dremel attachments will cost about half as much. Both feature quick change options. At 40% of the price I think the Dremel might be the choice for many people who have not picked up a Fein yet.

Bosch Multi-X PS50 vs. Fein MultiMaster ACCU Cordless

On Power rating the Fein is 9.6V vs. Bosch at 12V. On Speed the Fein has a Max 14,500 OPM vs. Bosch Max 20,000 OPM. On price the Fein Cordless in $481.50 and the Bosch PS50-2A is $179. The Bosch also works with a wide range of other great 12V Max tools, with more to come. The Bosch Accessories are about half the price of the Fein but work interchangably with Fein 636 model's accessories. I think we may have a new player in the field when the PS50 is actually available.

Back in July we posted on these tools in their European versions (see here). Finally the Bosch Brute Tough Lithium Tools are here, well soon at least. These have been long anticipated and probably not a coincidence these tools will be released almost exactly at the same time as the new Milwaukee M18 line of tools. The Bosch Brute Drills have been the preferred cordless drill of choice by many for some time. The delay in coming to market with a Brute 18V may have caused some to switch brands but hopefully not too many. Bosch is making up for lost time with one of the most powerful 18 volt tools we have seen. The new hammer drill has 650 in/lbs and 0-475/2,050 RPM well above the current competition. The battery system will be similar to the 36 volt tools with SlimPacks and FatPack options.

The only down side of the release of new Bosch 14.4 and 18 volt tools is this means no more amazing deals on Bosch 36 volt which we have seen all summer long. Since Bosch didn’t have an equivalent 18 volt product they rewarded all their loyal users with 36 volt tools at 18 volt prices. A hammer drill kit for instance can still be picked up for $249 while a 4 tool combo is still only $497. These prices are part of a limited time promo and will go back up in September before the new tools are released.    

The new 14.4 & 18V tools both Brute Tough and Compact Tough can be pre-ordered at Ohio Power Tool and will be shipped in early October. We will all patiently wait for the different saws, lights and other tools that will work with these systems to be released.

Mount Prospect, Ill., August 25, 2008 – Building on the success of its award-winning 36-volt and 12V-Max Litheon cordless tool platforms, Bosch Power Tools and Accessories today unveiled its first Litheon-powered offerings in the popular 18V and 14.4V size ranges. The core of Bosch’s mid-range Litheon™ launch is a full range of cordless drill/drivers and hammer drill/drivers purpose-built to offer the best runtime, battery life, durability and performance in the industry.

Earlier this week we took a quick look at all the Milwaukee Tools launching in October which included several new M12 tools. In this post we will take a more in-depth look specifically at two of the new M12 tools, the Hackzall and Copper Tube Cutter. The whole M12 line is aimed at Tradesmen specifically plumbers, HVAC, electricians and remodelers. The tools are very lightweight and compact, perfect for working in confined spaces.

Overall I am very happy with their strategy and glad they found creative new product for professionals to use with the M12 battery system. My initial fear is that we would be hit with a bunch of cheap consumer products and that Milwaukee might lose focus on their professional customers. That is not the case with these tools at all.   

M12 Copper Tube Cutter 2471-22

This is the first product of its kind and will directly compete with the Ridgid manual pipe cutters which have been very successful. The battery powered M12 unit should save a large amount of time for anyone that is continuously cutting copper pipe. On a ½” copper pipe the 2471-22 can make a cut in 3 seconds and do up to 200 cuts on a single charge. The same cut might take 20-30 seconds with a manual cutter. The tool also automatically adjusts to different sizes from 3/8” to 1” tube.  

Of course when you talk about electric pipe cutting tools one of the first concerns might be working with pipes full of water and getting it wet. Certainly the tool is not waterproof so don’t take it in the bath tube with you but Milwaukee has make serious efforts to keep the unit’s electronics sealed as well as built the head with corrosion resistant metal.

M12 Hackzall 2420-22

This is not Milwaukee’s first effort to build a smaller cutting tool. Milwaukee had the NiCd 18V Hatchet which was a smaller version of the Sawzall that bent 90 degrees in the middle was very popular among plumbers. The Hatchet has since been phased out along with the rest of the NiCd tools but the idea or a compact reciprocating saw is very much alive in the new Hackzall. The Hackzall however goes way beyond a compact Sawzall. The smaller size and new tool configuration are not only intended to make regular cuts but also to use for detail work of a Rotozip or jigsaw. The small unit has 0-3000 SPM and can cut wood, drywall, PVC, fiberglass, plastic and ever galvanized pipe.

The Hackzall can use any Sawzall blade but will also accept New Hackzall Blades specifically made for the unit. The new blades are smaller 3.5”-6” and include scroll saw blades and other blades specifically made for the Hackzall. The unit also features similar preventative measures to keep water out of the internal parts of the tools when using on pipes that may have recently been in use.

In October Milwaukee Power Tool will launch its largest release of new products ever. The 2 lines of products currently exist but this will greatly expand on both of these lines and truly give them a foothold into several new markets. The new products will be part of the new M12 (12 volt) & M18 (18 volt) tool lines.

The Milwaukee M12 tool line currently features the Micro Driver 2401-22 and M-Spector Camera 2310-21. Soon to be released (October 1st - target date) are an Impact Driver 2450-22, Copper Cutter 2471-22, Flashlight & Hackzall 2420-22. These new tools will be very popular among plumbing and HVAC contractors. The copper tube cutter especially will be a huge time saver and can handle 3/8” to 1” copper tube. The Hackzall is ideal for cutting pvc tubes or putting boxes in drywall and plywood. It will be a handy tool to have but will not replace your Sawzall for all jobs. You can find a few extremely well priced M12 combo kits available on Ohio Power Tool which will be available in very limited quantities to promote the new tool launch.

The Milwaukee M18 line expands on the current battery system used by the compact 18 volt model 2601-22. The 2601 however has a slim battery which is light weight but not powerful enough to use with the new hammer drill 2611-24, Sawzall 2620-22 or circular saws 2630-22. A new larger M18 battery will work with all the tools and will be called the XC battery. The new M18 line features a light weight hex impact that outperforms the competition in speed, torque and run time available with compact batteries 2650-21 or XC batteries 2650-22. The new line will also add additional tools in the following months such as a grinder, jigsaw as well as other new tools. The new M18 will eventually replace the current line of V18 tools as the only Milwaukee 18 volt tools but that will not happen until some time in 2009 and the batteries and accessories will of course be available for at least 5-10 more years.

All the new M12 & M18 tools are available now for Pre-Sale from Ohio Power Tool. The Pre-Sales will be fulfilled in the order they are received so if you want to be the first kid on the block with the new tools you should probably make a pre-order ASAP. There is a new addition to the 12V Max Litheon line. The PS30-2A which is a drill/driver with a 3/8” three jawed chuck, instead of the hex type that is on most other models. The obvious advantage is that this will use any standard drill bit, hole saws in addition to all the standard driver bits. I am happy to see this option finally available in the line up. These ultra compact are certainly powerful enough to handle basic drilling and consumers having been waiting for a compact drill like this for some time. The advertising from Bosch last holiday season said “4 now, 12 models in 2008” with the flashlight FL11 and this new PS30 drill we now have a total of 5 by my count so hopefully we will see some additional tools periodically through the end of the year. Many people were surprised when the Bosch released a second generation of Blue Core (NiCd) tools were released but these tools are incredibly dependable in extreme conditions such as cold weather where the first round of lithium tools had some problems.

After using your power tools continuously for several years the batteries are probably more useful as a paper weights than they are at powering your tools. This is of course to be expected from any battery and even with longer running lithium ion technology; they will eventually stop holding a charge as well. At that point you may want to simply pitch the battery in the trash can and be done with it but there is a better option. I have yet to meet anyone who preferred Nickel Cadmium in their drinking water but maybe it’s delicious.

There are 30,000+ locations around the country that will take your batteries and recycle them for free. You are most likely going to need to pick up a new battery anyway so you might as well get it from a dealer who will take the old battery as well. Plus the spokesman is Al Borland from “Home Improvement” how could he steer you wrong? Their website is www.rbrc.org and you can find hundreds of locations in you area by using your zip code on the Find A Drop Box page. This program is also good for cell phones, laptops, cameras, camcorders and all other types of rechargeable batteries. The most common types of batteries are Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Small Sealed Lead (Pb). Just make sure it has the RBRC recycle seal on the battery somewhere, which all major brands do.   

If you are in the central Ohio area, you can drop your rechargeable batteries off at Ohio Power Tool and of course pick up a wide range of new batteries from Milwaukee, Bosch, Ingersoll Rand, Lincoln Lube, Makita and more.

It has been rumored Bosch was going to change from 10.8V to 12V for some time. Yesterday Bosch officially announced the launch the second generation of the PS20 which is a 12V Max tool, the new model number is PS20-2A. The upgrade for the originator of the ultra compact tool market features a 25% increase in power and speed to 100 inch-pound of torque and 500 RPM operating speed. It’s no secret there has been some very big success in the Pocket/Micro tool market. It started with the Bosch 10.8v tools, then the Milwaukee 12v (newly named the M12 tools) and now almost every tools company has some form of these compact lithium ion tools. One of the common complaints for most of these tools is that they don’t have a standard chuck but instead a ¼” hex. This means you can’t use standard drill bits for pilots or any other form of drilling and if you need to carry two tools around that pretty much defeats the purpose. Obviously if you are going to do some serious drilling you may want to look at a slightly larger tool. Perhaps something like the new Milwaukee compact 18V Lithium 2601-22 ($199), still lightweight just over 3.5 lbs but it is built for heavy use. That being said you should still be able to do some occasional drilling and detail work with the 10.8v and 12v tool.
  

The internet is an amazing place to shop, compare and learn about products but I do feel there is something that maybe hasn’t been completely figured out when it comes to recommendations and accessories the way you get when you come into a store, hold the tools and talk to the guys behind the counter. A great instance of this is with the Milwaukee 38 Piece Quik-Lok 48-32-1500 set which sells incredibly well with any brand of the Micro & Pocket Drivers in the store because it just makes sense. The kit comes with 7 different sized ¼” hex drill bits, ¼” & 3/8” square socket adapters, Quik-Loc connectors and all sorts of different size driver bits. This is way more than just another driver bits which you already have but some however that gets lost online. With so much “upselling” going on it’s really hard to tell if this is really a recommendation from someone who know what they are talking about or simple a computer program matching compatible accessories, trying to add a few extra bucks on the sale.

Milwaukee recently announced the introduction of their 2 new inspection cameras the 2301-21 and 2300-20. We had a chance recently to get our hands on the M-Spector 2301-21 and compare it with the Ridgid Seesnake Micro. Here are some of my comparisons.

The basic feel of the M-Spector is that’s actually a little larger than I previously though. The handle is thicker than the Seesnake Micro and the vertical design makes it much taller than the Micro. The thumb locations do make it much easier to change light settings and the new digital zoom feature is an advantage over the Micro. The screen sizes are the same but the Milwaukee has better resolution at 320x240 vs. 234x160 with the Micro. The case for the Milwaukee 2301-21 is the typical red hard plastic case Milwaukee makes for each product. The case is also very large because it houses the charger and battery as well. The Ridgid case is a much smaller cloth case with foam lining.

In terms of performance I felt both did a very similar job actually viewing items. I couldn’t see any difference in light strength. One problem I still have with both cameras is there is no way to change orientation of the camera so the image is constantly sideways or upside down. I did see on the Milwaukee M-Spector that it says it only allows a 9’ reach with extensions (which is only 2 extensions). The Ridgid allows up to 9 extensions for a total of 30’. The Milwaukee is digital so in theory it should be able to handle many more than 2 extensions without image loss but there is no way to test it until it comes out. I was also told the 3’ extensions are not interchangeable between Ridgid and Milwaukee. The Ridgid Seesnake, unlike the Milwaukee, does come with 3 attachments (mirror, magnet and hook) which are good for pulling wires, picking up items, etc. The final big advantage for the Milwaukee is that it works with existing 12 volt lithium ion system that includes the 2401-22 Micro Driver and many more tools to come.

Overall I think it’s a pretty even match. The Milwaukee 2301-21 is $20 more than the Seesnake but you can use the battery with your other Milwaukee tools. I think the deciding factor for me would be if I were also going to put a 2401-22 Micro Driver in the tool box than I am going with the Milwaukee. The 2300-20 (M-Spector that comes out in Aug-Sept) works off regular batteries like the Ridgid Micro and in that case I would stick with the Seesnake Micro.
