Johnson Levels Adds 18 New Measurement Tools

Recently we received one of Johnson’s 48" Magnetic BIG J Heavy Duty Aluminum Level 1501-4800 for review and our initial impressions were very positive. The construction is solid and very nice design with large viewing bubbles, rubberized end caps and even the comfortable center grips. The magnet along the side is a very nice feature, personally had never used a magnetic 48” level it’s like having 3 hands, I’ve seen the light. That being said we handed it off to one of our favorite contractor and long time Ohio Power Tool customer with a mission to try and break it. We will report back soon, in the meantime Johnson Levels has some other cool products like free Android Apps (Leveling Bubble & Visual Level) and just announced today a full line of measuring tapes and long tapes, check out the full press release below.

Bosch GTL3 Floor & Wall Tile Layout Laser

The new Bosch GTL3 Laser ($173 Ohio Power Tool) is in-stock and available now. The laser comes with the very handy wall mount, target and a nice carrying case. The GTL3 has a few advantages over the currently very popular CST LM2 Laser ($128 Ohio Power Tool); for starters the Bosch features 3 lasers instead of 2 which gives a nice 45 degree line that can be very helpful. The Bosch is also much taller putting down line than can be seen at further distances. Having tested several of these layout laser tools personally I will say the pictures are a little deceiving, none of these put down a laser like you see in the pictures. Only a few feet out it becomes harder so see on a perfectly flat surface however the laser actually shows up better once you have material down such as grout, unlike a chalk line that obviously gets covered up. The tile being laid will also show the laser very clearly (even 30+ ft away) if in the path of the laser, so it’s fairly easy to line up against the laser. Checkout all the new Bosch Laser Tools and for more information on the GTL3 models see the Full Bosch Press Release below.

CST/berger Laser Levels - Free Shipping

Until the end of the month you can get free ground shipping on all CST/berger laser tools anywhere in the continental US. This includes all dot lasers, line lasers, rotary lasers and pipe lasers. Many of the lasers themselves are available in a number of different kits that include any accessories you might need.

When ordering Lasers online make sure you read the fine print on what is included with your purchase. For instance on rotary lasers each model has 3-5 different configurations which might include, a detector, tripod, measuring rod and other accessories. Typically a Compete Package will have everything; a Detector Package will no include tripod or rod and an Interior Package will be the basic laser with v-mount, targets, glasses and case. However even one or two of the interior packed include detectors. Keep this in mind when price shopping online, it is easy to get confused and some suppliers out there might take advantage of that. If you have any questions about what is included in any package or what package is right for you talk to the guys at Ohio Power Tool at 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com.

It appears some of the tools will be apart of the M12 cordless line, while other tools will use ordinary alkaline batteries and some tools will be available with both configurations. These tools are aimed to compete directly with products from manufacturers like Fluke. A great fit for Milwaukee Tools who have already aimed the M12 tools at plumbers, electricians and HVAC users with tools like the M-Spector and Hackzall.  Check back soon for updates and products test on all the new goodies. Around the World: Milwaukee Laser Tools?

Checking out the Milwaukee websites for Europe I came across the Milwaukee Laser Range Finder LM60. This looks like a similar tool to the Bosch DLR165K range finder. The 60 meter range on this tool is just slightly more than the Bosch 165 feet range, at about 195 feet if my math is right. I would think if it’s successful in Europe it will make its way state side although there has been no mention of this tool so it would not be within the first half of this year.

Below is the official press release from Milwaukee in Europe:

Laser device for higher precision - Milwaukee LM60 makes measuring simpler, faster and more precise

Skilled craftsmen only achieve perfect working results if they have taken precise measurements in the planning phase. The common measuring methods using a folding rule or an ultrasonic device are awkward and often imprecise. The LM60 laser device from heavy-duty manufacturer Milwaukee makes things easier, enabling distance, areas and room volume to be exactly measured indoors and outdoors.

With just one turn of the hand the device is ready to take measurements. Even if the distances to be measured are long, for example in buildings under construction, only one person is needed to carry out the measurements. The device measures distances up to 60 metres with accuracy of +/- 1,5 millimetres. By comparison, conventional ultrasonic measurement devices are 50 times less precise and will only measure up to 15 metres.

The measurement result is immediately shown on the large, clearly laid out display, and built-in illumination enables results also to be read in the dark. What’s more, the Milwaukee LM60 shows the measurements in the metric system or in inches. Indirect measurements can be made using the device or individual measurements added. If, for example, the entire floor area of an apartment or house has to be measured the addition function makes it easy to quickly total up the various measurements of the individual rooms.

Thanks to its compact design the LM60 is ideal for measuring places which are difficult to access. The laser beam takes precise measurements in the smallest corners. Furthermore, the LM60 is suitable for use outdoors. The laser dot and targeting assistance make it possible to precisely hit the desired targets even at a considerable distance. The robust housing is totally rubber dust protected making it suitable for tough assignments on building sites.

With its handy size the LM60 fits into any pocket and is easy to take anywhere thanks to its strap and the bag supplied. Further practical characteristics of the LM60 are the battery-saving automatic-off function and the low-battery display. The batteries are also supplied with the device.

Bosch Laser Levels Coming in 2009

Several months ago Bosch acquired CST/Berger from the Stanley Works. Bosch has been looking to get into the laser business for some time and CST/Berger is probably the best name in the business so the purchase couldn’t have been a better fit. Stanley at the time was looking to diversify away from the construction business so it looks like this worked out for everyone.

In addition to continuing to build the CST/Berger line Bosch has also decided to add several new products under the Bosch name. These new items include dot lasers, line laser levels and rotary laser levels. The Bosch specific products are aimed more toward the contractors and they will most likely never have the specialty products or survey equipment similar to the CST/Berger line.

Below is a list of all the new Bosch Laser Tools you will see the first quarter 2009.

Bosch GPL3T 3-Point Torpedo Laser Alignment Kit – Features include: dot lasers, plumb, level & square, aluminum body, tripod mount, bubble levels & v-groove for pipes. List: $152, OPT: $91.20

Bosch Acquires CST/Berger Measuring Tools from Stanley Works

On June 11th the Robert Bosch Tool Corporation announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire CST/Berger from Stanley Works. The purchase price amounts to $205 Million for the tool division that had $80 million in sales for 2007 (excluding $10 million in certain European sales). The CST/Berger is primarily focused on laser leveling & measuring tools in the North American markets.

So why is Bosch Tools interested in this contractor oriented brand of laser products when Stanley has apparently lost interest? There are several takes on this, first Bosch is extremely diverse around the world and therefore less impacted by swings in the US construction market. If Bosch can capitalize on the success of CST/Berger in the US and duplicate it around the world they should see a solid increase in sales. Secondly, Bosch has only recently introduced its first professional/consumer measuring tools. If they were to incorporate the products of CST/Berger into the Bosch Tool family and make the price more reachable they could see serious increases in sales from contractors and consumers alike.

What is Stanley going to do with all that money? They actually already spent it and then some to acquire 100% of the Sonitrol Corporation for $275 million. The Sonitrol Corporation provides security services, access control and fire detection to commercial clients. The transaction will bring a new commercial customer base to Stanley's Convergent Security Solutions business.

John F. Lundgren, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented: "These two transactions are important steps toward advancing our growth strategy and repositioning the company to be less dependent on construction and DIY markets. We continue to be strongly committed to shifting the company's portfolio into higher-growth, higher-return areas such as electronic security. The addition of Sonitrol, with its iconic brand and strong franchisee and direct sales network, expands the scale of our existing North American monitoring operation, increases our recurring revenue and adds breadth and depth to our electronic security product offering."

The recent down turn in the US construction market has not been an easy situation for many tool companies. It is completely understandable for a company such as Stanley Works to want to diversify their exposure. Stanley’s Bostitch line of air nailers is facing hard times as well with the slow down in new home building. Bosch has not only limited their risk with global reach but they have been in many diverse industries for years including security systems, car parts and even kitchen appliances.

Bosch is committed to strengthening their power tools brand and there could potentially be additional acquisitions to make in the near future. The immediate slow down will most likely turn around but it has made some companies much more interested in selling it appears.
