Milwaukee REDLITHIUM Batteries: What’s the Big Deal?

Several years ago we all lived in ignorance with NiCD batteries on our power tools. Then came Lithium Ion a new technology that promised better runtime and a more consistent power curve and the people rejoiced. But all was not well, on that first cold winter morning when you went to the truck and the new Lithium tools wouldn’t work because they were too cold.

In the northern part of the country this is obviously a bigger issue but we have contractors going back to NiCD tools in the winter time because NiCD currently performs better in the cold. We certainly aren’t the only ones who think this is completely ridiculous.

Bosch RS7 Reciprocating Saw with LED Light

It seems to be the trend in power tools these days that any tool can be improved with an LED light. Unlike the trend of putting lasers beams on every power or hand tool out there we are actually a big fan of LED lights on many tools. On the jobsite, shop, backyard or garage you are not always going to have the greatest lighting and seeing that dull pencil line through the blade guard isn’t always the easiest task.

The Bosch Reciprocating Saw RS7 ($99, Ohio Power Tool) replaces the RS5 and increases power to 11amps. This is the light weight, medium duty model but it still has some serious power so for most plumbers, electricians and homeowners it will perform very well. Unless you are doing a lot of demolition work in most cases the larger 15amp reciprocating saws or Sawzalls are just going to be added weight. Also check out the new Saw Blades including Milwaukee Sawzall diamond grit and Bosch Edge for Metal Cutting.

PEX System Rundown: Uponor (ProPEX) vs Viega (PureFlow)

Cross-Linked Polyethylene Tubing or PEX plumbing systems have become the norm in new building today with companies continue to find new and innovative uses for the resource. In addition to replacing copper tubing for many traditional plumbing needs it is also an idea choice for radiant floor heating and now quickly becoming a popular option for fire sprinkler installations. Unfortunately all PEX systems are not uniformly configured and there are several systems to consider, hopefully this will give a little background on the different options out there.

As history will tell us it is common for there to be many players in new technologies but eventually 1 or 2 main players with emerge and they become the standard. Early adopters of Betamax, MiniDiscs & HDDVD will tell you after shelling out small fortunes for the newest gear it can be painful to see you technology never take off. Even though Betamax was a high quality than VHS, it matters little when the technology is gone, majority rules.

Milwaukee V28 Transitions to Milwaukee M28 Tools

You may be thinking, oh no I’m going to need either new tools, battery or chargers for my V28 Tools to work with the new ones… Nope that is not the case. The M28 platform will be “100% compatible” with the current Milwaukee V28 tools. In fact many of the M tools will basically stay the same, with same part numbers but will be getting the upgraded “M” batteries in the kits. The new batteries will feature Digital Power Management (DPM) and newer construction features that will extend the life of the batteries. Additionally the batteries will provide better overall performance and runtime for all your existing tools.

In addition to the upgraded battery technology we will also see the first of hopefully many new M28 tools with the M28 Hammer Drill 0726-22 ($419, Ohio Power Tool) & M28 LED Flashlight 49-24-0187 ($59, Ohio Power Tool) which should be on shelves very soon. The new ½” Hammer Drill features 750 in.lbs torque more than any other cordless drill on the market today in 18v, 24v, 28v or 36v categories. Check the Ohio Power Tool Milwaukee M28 website often for when exact each model will be in stock with the new M batteries. Items will switch as each tool transitions from V28 to M28. For more information read the official Milwaukee Tool Press Release Below.

Free Milwaukee M12 XC Battery 48-11-2402 & Free Shipping

We have mentioned the Milwaukee M12 XC Battery before which is more than just a battery with longer runtime. The M12 XC Battery 48-11-2402 ($79, Ohio Power Tool) actually adds power & speed to many tools as well as runtime. In lab testing with the 3/8” Drill/Driver 2410-22 ($149, Ohio Power Tool) the time it took to drill a 1” hole went from 16 seconds to 9 seconds. The Stall Torque went from 250 in.lbs to 310 in.lbs, just by switching to the XC battery. Similar gains are reported for the M12 Impact Drivers, Hackzall, Screwdrivers and other tools. The flat rubber over-molded base also makes the tool much more stable in the upright position as well as protects finished surfaces from marring. *Note the M12 plumb laser and M12 sub-scanner are the only 2 tools that cannot fit the larger battery.

During the month of August, Ohio Power Tool is running a Free UPS Ground Shipping special for all Milwaukee Tool, simply use Coupon Code “MILWAUKEE” in the check out or call 800-242-4424. In addition to that cost savings you will also for a very limited time be able to get a FREE M12 XC Battery 48-11-2402 with the purchase of any Milwaukee M12 Tool Kit. That is an $80 value with most M12 Tools ranging from $99-$199, this is an incredible deal. The FREE battery ships with the tools, no waiting for a Mail-In Rebate to come. Supplies are very limited on this offer so place your order now; it may not be around tomorrow or even when you get home from work.

Milwaukee Test & Measure Tools - Free M12 Drill Deal

Earlier this week we were at a Milwaukee Tool event where we got to see all the cool new tools coming out later this year but also had some time to learn a little more about the products Milwaukee currently has out on the shelves. One of those product lines was the Milwaukee Test & Measure Tools which are available as part of the Milwaukee M12 line or as regular Alkaline Tools. Typically the regular battery tools are going to be the more general purpose meters & tools while the M12 tools are going to provide some advanced features. One instance is the regular Temp Gun ($149, Ohio Power Tool) has a temperature range from -20 to 932 with the M12 Temp Gun ($369, Ohio Power Tool) goes -40 to 1472 & provides a humidity measurement.

Milwaukee ProPEX Cordless Expansion Tools M12 & M18

Just yesterday Milwaukee Tools held a very nice event for the Tool/Construction Media crowd and provided a lot of hands on for current products as well as some products which will be coming out in the next few months. Everett from Pro Tool Reviews did a nice job recapping the whole event so we aren’t going to bore you with our version. We were really happy to see so much focus from the Red Team on Plumbers, Electricians, HVAC & Maintenance as well as their growing relationships with many of the governing associations for those trades. Probably the best example of that, which we took away from the event was in the new ProPEX tools.

How to Install Recessed Lights – Milwaukee Carbide Hole Saws

Installing can lights can significantly improve the look and feel of any room but installing them in a remodel job can be a pain. Having used the compass style scoring tool and a drywall saw to do an entire basement not too long ago anything that makes this job quicker and more accurate is easy to get behind. Milwaukee Tools has recently introduced a full line of Carbide Grit Recessed Light Hole Saws ranging in size from 3-1/8” to 6-7/8”. These new hole saws are a remodelers dream because not only will they make short work of drywall but the carbide grit can cut through plaster, acoustical tile, wood and stucco with mesh as well. These hole saws also feature a continuous rim which means they will not tear or chip the material, leaving a very clean hole for the can light installation.

Milwaukee M18 Batteries - Compact vs XC High Capacity

The Milwaukee M18 line of cordless tools has been very successful for several reasons including their focus on professionals and high performance as well as a very broad range of tools that is continuously growing. Milwaukee M18 Batteries are also the only power tool batteries on the market today that feature a power gauge to let you know exactly how much juice is left on the battery. Yet another reason for their success is the M18 line features a Digital Power Management System which will shut the batteries off when the tool becomes overloaded saving the tool from overheating. There is however one thing that has caused a little confusion within the M18 Line which is the 2 sizes of batteries and certain tools not working with the compact batteries.

Quick Guide to Selecting a Driver Bit Set

Everyone needs a good driver bit set in the arsenal even if you aren’t a professional or serious DIYer it’s always a good idea to have a few extra bits handy. When you start looking at bits sets however you’ll realize pretty quick they all fairly different as far as what’s included. First you have several types of screwdriver bits Phillips, Slotted, Square & Torx. Then you have 1”, 2” & 2 sided 2”. There are also “Impact Bits” for all these options as well. In addition to just the screwdriver bits some kits include nutsetters, socket adaptors, hex drill bits and quick change adaptors.

M18 Hackzall 2625-21 vs M12 Hackzall Vs Bosch 18V Recip

So when the M18 Hackzall 2625-21 ($199, Ohio Power Tool) was first mentioned the stats looked fairly similar to the M12 Hackzall with a slightly larger stroke ½” vs ¾” with M18. Even when comparing them side by side (see pictures here) they looked similar in size, not counting the larger M18 battery. When it came time to test them out however the Milwaukee M18 Hackzall was clearly a different animal than its M12 little brother.

Out of The Box

The Hackzall has a very low price point; with the “Tool Only” version 2625-20 at only $109 it is far less expensive than the M18 Sawzall $199 price. The tool is very light and well balanced in the hand as well as claims the lowest vibration levels “in its class”. The 2625-21 kit also has a pretty low price but only includes (1) M18 XC battery and a work bag instead of a plastic case, some people prefer. These units will also work with the compact M18 batteries for ultra light weight although personally I would recommend using the larger XC batteries as any saw is going limit your battery life.

Impact Tools & Adaptors – Hex vs Square Drive

It seemed like not too long ago all electric impact tools were square drive and there were few cordless tools even available. Now everything has changed and there are many options including cordless tools all the way up to ¾” square drives with an impressive 525 ft-lbs torque. In addition to square drives for sockets we now also want to use these tools as impact drivers for screws and other fastening applications. This is exactly why Milwaukee has created a full line of Shockwave impact adaptors specifically designed to better handle the high stress points these tools can create. You can easily go from hex to square or square to hex depending on your needs.

Just within Milwaukee Tools there are a wide range of Impact Tools:

M12
2450-22 – ¼” hex – 850 in-lbs - $159
2451-22 – 3/8” Square – 1000 in-lbs - $179

M18
2650-21 – ¼” hex – 1400 in-lbs - $229
2651-22 – 3/8” Square – 2000 in-lbs - $299
2652-22 – ½” Square – 2200 in-lbs - $299
2663-22 – ½” Square – 450 ft-lbs - $379
2664-22 – ¾” Square – 525 ft-lbs - $449

V28
0779-22 – ½” Square – 325 ft-lbs - $473

Corded
9071-20 – ½” Square – 300 ft-lbs - $174
9075-20 – ¾” Square – 380 ft-lbs - $288

It is important to keep a few things in mind when selecting your tool and adaptors. One thing is with the hex impact adaptors you can use up to 1/2" square drive sockets but it will really only be able to get at most 1400 in-lbs (117 ft-lbs) which may be underpowered for many applications. On the other hand with a ½” 2663-22 you have almost 4 times the torque as the 2650-21 and while the adaptor may hold up, it would be extremely easy to break driver bits and strip screws. Just something to think about when thinking about impact adaptors. If you have any questions about Impact tools (air or electric), adaptors, applications or anything else feel free to contact the experts at Ohio Power Tool 800-242-4424 and they will be happy to help you find the right tool for the job.

Milwaukee adds M12 & M18 ProPex Tools

They say it’s important to know who your customers are and there is little doubt Milwaukee Tools has at least picked the customers they are going to aim new products at. Many of the new Milwaukee cordless tools have found very specific professional applications such as the PVC cutter, Grease Gun and No-Hub Coupling driver. These may never be huge sellers at the big box stores but for the pros who use them daily and see the benefits they are very happy to see this level of innovation. Milwaukee’s new partnership with Uponor and their ProPEX system has again put them in a place where they are the only kids in the sandbox. There will be a new tool for both the Milwaukee M12 & Milwaukee 18 tool lines although full specs, pricing and launch dates are not yet available. Read the full Milwaukee press release below.

New Milwaukee M18 Hacksaw 2625-21 & 2625-21CT

The Milwaukee M12 hacksaw 2420-22 ($179, Ohio Power Tool) has been an incredibly popular seller, with the pistol grip it is far more user friendly for 1 hand cutting than your traditional reciprocating Sawzall. Milwaukee has also recently come out with high capacity M12 XC Battery ($79, Ohio Power Tool) which not only give the M12 hacksaw longer runtime but actually gives the tool more power.

Available soon you will have the option of an M18 Hacksaw which will come with either the M18 slim or XC battery. This will be a good addition for those that already have other Milwaukee M18 tools. For many professionals there will be plenty of justification to have both a Sawzall & Hacksaw on the jobsite.

The only difference I can see in the stats is that the M18 has a ¾” stroke vs M12 with a ½” stroke. Otherwise it looks to be the same 0-3000 SPM speed and Quik-Lok keyless blade holder. We will let you know more as these become available.  Checkout the youtube video below:

Selecting the Right Concrete Core Drill & Diamond Core Bits

I apologize in advance for the dry material but we get lots of questions about concrete core drilling and hopefully we can clear it up a few of the basics in this post. There are lots of options when it comes to coring drills & rigs in terms of price, quality, size, power source, etc. Each type of drill has its place and it’s not always easy to select the right one and not make the decision totally based on which is cheapest. Ohio Power Tool offers a wide range of different types of core drills to cover the majority of needs out there which we’ll look at but obvious there are dozens of other brands out there that could be matched up.

New Milwaukee Sawzalls 6509-31 & 6519-31

Milwaukee takes great pride in the fact that they invented the Sawzall recip saw almost 60 years ago. They really don’t like it when anyone else makes a competitive saw so naturally they are constantly updating and coming out with different versions to be more powerful, durable, lighter, cheaper, faster or some combination thereof. The two new models are both 12 amp models where the 6509-31 has a ¾” stroke and 6519-31 has the 1-1/8” stroke. These should replace the current 6509-22 11 amp models and be similar in price, maybe $120-130 range. The new saws feature a gear protecting clutch to extend the life of saw, counter weight to decrease vibration and claims a 2x faster cut time (not sure what that is comparing). We haven’t gotten an exact date on the release but it should be soon. It will be interesting to see how these perform vs the larger Sawzalls. More info and pricing will be available soon, in the mean time checkout all the Milwaukee Tools on Ohio Power Tool. Full Milwaukee press Release below.

Milwaukee M12 Cordless No-Hub Driver 2455-22

Milwaukee posted on their website an interesting new tool. It is a new Milwaukee M12 screwdriver that has 3 torque settings: 60 in-lbs, 80 in-lbs & drill. The main purpose of the new drill/driver is to install no-hub couplings most accurately to their specifications. The M12 2455-22 ($299, Ohio Power Tool) is the first if its kind in the industry and designed to install 300 clamps per charge and only needs recalibrated every 25,000 clamps. Every no-hub coupling give a specific torque setting threshold and there are manual tools on the market but nothing cordless in a package this compact. Obviously this won’t be a tool for everyone with such a specific application but it does reinforce the idea Milwaukee is making tools for professionals even in their 12 volt tools.

The 2455-22 should be in-stock in the very near future. The Milwaukee M12 Tool line now has over 20 models available, check them out on Ohio Power Tool and feel free to email sales@ohiopowertool.com if you have any questions about Milwaukee Tools. Read the full press release below.

Milwaukee M12 Grease Gun 2446-21XC – New Kid on the Block

Announced officially today Milwaukee Tool has come out with a M12 Grease Gun 2446-21XC (Ohio Power Tool, $199). This is a new category for Milwaukee and will go up directly against the Lincoln Lube 12V PowerLuber 1244 (Ohio Power Tool, $199) which has been the most popular cordless grease gun for several years. When compared head to head, Milwaukee vs Lincoln Lube the 12 volt Milwaukee has several advantages. The two kits cost about the same however M12 2446-21XC offers higher pressure with 8,000psi, a battery that can dispense 7 tubes, almost double the lincoln (although 1244 includes 2 batteries vs 2446-21XC kit with 1) and possibly most significantly the Milwaukee M12 battery is shares with 20+ other tools while the Lincoln 12V battery can only be used on the one tool.

The Milwaukee grease gun also offers many innovative new features right down to the basic design of the tool, which has a base and more supportive tube enclosure. Hopefully this new design will prevent some of the damage we see every day with cracked handles and housings. Lincoln does offer an 18 volt PowerLuber 1844 (Ohio Power Tool, $267) which can pump 8-10 tubes per battery and has 2 speed transmission, high volume & high pressure but even their high pressure option is only 7,500psi. The higher pressure is required for some applications, also very useful in cold weather or clearing clogged zerk fittings.

Overall I think the Milwaukee Grease Gun 2446-21XC Kit (also available as tool only 2446-20XC, $129) will be a very popular item if for no other reason than there are already so many Milwaukee M12 tools and batteries out there. As the M12 line grows it makes the case stronger for all the other existing tools, also this is the first tool we have seen a kit include the M12 XC high capacity battery but it gives me hope on expanding the line further in the future. DeWalt vs Milwaukee vs Makita vs Bosch – Social Media

From time to time I like to look at the top professional tools brands and see what they are up to. Typically I’ll go to their various social media outlets to get the updates and I had a though, why not have one place and make it easy to find them all or better yet pit them against each other in a virtual Battle Royal.

Why is social media important for a power tool company? Obviously it’s important for any company to be involved in the communication about their own products. Please make it as easy as possible for us to get info on your company, events, promos, new tools and accessories.  Probably one of the best examples of a power tool company using social media (although not part of the showdown) would be the Ridgid Forum, here you get real professionals, company reps and lots of others asking talking about new products, applications, issues, events, etc. Why can’t all of them just have awesome forums where we can talk tools.

Milwaukee ToolsFaceBookYouTubeTwitter
For years it seemed like Milwaukee Tools was perhaps a little behind the times, they were first out with V28 tools with success but also had some misses. Over the past two years however I have been very impressed with what I have seen from the Red camp. With lots of very innovative new products and some real excitement all the way down the line these guys have good focus on professional customers and do a good job of getting info out in many different channels.

Makita ToolsFaceBookYouTubeTwitter
Makita Tools I think has understood the idea of being involved directly with customers for some time. Not only do they do a good job online but they tie it all in very nicely with their direct promotions/sponsorships in motor sports, MLS Soccer, the 53’ Experience Makita semi-truck, contests, sweepstakes and of course Miss Makita 2010 & Senorita Makita 2010. If there were a high school for power tools, Makita would probably be the coolest kid in class.

DeWalt ToolsFaceBookYouTubePro Blogs
The Yellow brand is by far the most popular of any tool brand and has been for years. They are focused on FaceBook and YouTube with plenty of good videos available on both. The Pro Blogs are a nice feature of their site. They also tie their online outreach in with DeWalt Racing & NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth which helps get more user/fans involved.

Bosch Tools(Social What Now)
It is kind of surprising Bosch doesn’t do more with social media. I feel like they do a great job getting info out to magazines and other traditional media. They have innovative new products and build product specific sites like www.boschdaredevil.com so obviously not afraid of being online. They are also good about getting info to other bloggers for new products. The lack of social media has got to be by design and perhaps they just don’t like to toot their own horns but it sure would make it easier for the rest of us to stay up on their products, promos, events, etc.

Who wins… got to give credit to the DeWalt for this one, mainly for their Facebook Page which has a ton of user interaction (and better weapons, photo for the DeWalt M16 from the Facebook page). I’m going to call second place a tie between Makita & Milwaukee, which is kind of a coop-out but I really have trouble picking here. Both are doing some good things in different areas but how do I pick between innovative new products and Miss Makita. Bosch takes a back seat for this round. Social media obviously has zero impact on tool quality but if you use it I guess you expect everyone else to as well.

The STAFDA trade show is traditionally where manufacturers come together and solicit current distributors to carry their products thus increasing their overall reach. This show does not have as many product launches as the larger and more end user focused show like the www.BuildersShow.com or www.WorldofConcrete.com but there were some cool new products that were launched or at least that were available to touch and feel for the first time. Many of the larger vendors also had private meetings to unveil future plans and products however those products weren’t ready to launch.

Some of the highlights (more to come):

The Senco Fusion was one of the bigger product launches of the show. They didn’t have any marketing material ready and currently nothing on their website but they did have several working models of the 15 gauge and 18 gauge finishing nailers which I got to try out. These should be available sometime in the first quarter 2010 with other finishers on the way shortly afterwards. The framing nailer they said was in the works but we would not see it anytime soon.

The Milwaukee 2790-20 JobSite Radio for M12, M18, V18, V28 & NiCds was also at the show along with all the new Milwaukee Test & Measure tools. I have probably already had too many posts on these items already but it was nice to get chance to see them in action and answer a few questions like how can the radio take every kind of battery? Answer 3 different battery slots so probably not going to see any other universal tools coming.

Upgrade your Milwaukee Flashlight to LED 49-81-0090

Tired of your Flashlight dying while on the job? How about 3 times the run time. Bulbs are a pain to replace; how about 250 times the life span (50,000 hours). Ever dropped your flashlight and the bulb broke; how about a bulb that won’t break (or that is at least as strong as or stronger than the plastic housing it). One bulb (the last bulb you'll ever need) to work with all M12, M18, V18, V28 & all 9.6-28V Milwaukee incandescent flashlights. Also works with most DeWalt, Bosch, Makita, Hitachi, Ridgid, Ryobi and other brands as well!

It’s all true for your current flashlight if you get the new LED upgrade kit from Milwaukee 49-81-0090. The cost for the upgraded LED bulb kit will be around $33 but could be worth it for all benefits it provides. With all the advantages and continuously cheaper LED bulbs hopefully it won’t be long until all work lights are LED. Probably never guessed your flashlight bulb would out live your children’s children did you?

The Upgrade to LED kit 49-81-0090 will be available soon on Ohio Power Tool category: Cordless Worklights.

Milwaukee Band Saw Free Tool Rebate

We had several posts this year about new Milwaukee Band Saws. Several months ago we announced the new Deep Cut Band Saw 6232-6N ($299), then the Compact Band Saw 6242-6 ($199) and most recently the M18 Cordless Compact Band Saw 2629-22 ($399). If you had seen any of these and though you would like to get one but put it off, now may be the time. From now until the end of the year each of these 3 new band saws have a free tool or accessory kit available. Checkout the full Mail-in Rebate here.

The Compact Band Saw 6242-6 ($199) has the option for Free set of the new 29pc Shockwave Impact bits 48-32-4401 or 15pc Thunderbolt drill Bits 48-89-2803.

The Deep Cut Band Saw 6232-6N ($299) has the option of a Free 4.5”-5” 12 amp Grinder 6116-30 (locking) or 6116-31 (non-locking) both sell for $129 at Ohio Power Tool.

New High Capacity Milwaukee M12 XC Battery 48-11-2402

With all the new Milwaukee M12 tools we have been talking about it only makes sense they would offer a new high capacity M12 battery 48-11-2401 ($79). The XC M12 battery will have double the run time of the standard M12 48-11-2401 ($59). The regular M12 battery offers a good amount of run time already but Milwaukee is really targeting the professionals with the new M12 tools and battery life is always an issue when you depend on your tools 8+ hours a day. The new design has some advantages and disadvantages; the positive is run time & some of the tools will now have a wider more stable platform to rest on. The disadvantage is the compact tools are no longer as compact; a M12 2410-22 would almost be as large as the M18 2601-22. Also some of the M12 tools designed for the smaller battery can’t fit the larger XC 48-11-2402 such as the Plumb Laser or Sub-Scanner. For more details checkout the Full Milwaukee Tool Press Release below.

New M12 Milwaukee 2415-21 Right Angle 3/8” Drill

Yep it’s another new tool for the Milwaukee M12 tool line. It seems like we have been posting several times a week on all the new Milwaukee Tools but they just keep coming out with really cool new stuff. The Milwaukee 2415-21 ($139) M12 Right Angle drill is no exception. Similar to the Bosch PS10-2a ($119) however the new Milwaukee has a 20% more torque, faster RPM and of course the 3/8” hard plastic chuck. The 2415-21 offers a respectable 100 in-lbs torque, 800 RPM with electronic 11 setting chuck however for serious drilling from a compact tool the 2410-22 ($149) is still the better way to go with more powerful 250 in-lbs, 2 speed 0-400/0-1500 RPM, (2) batteries in kit and a metal chuck.

Where this new drill really shines is in compact spaces, with a head length of only 3-3/4” this drill can get into places most other tool can’t with the versatility of using a 3/8” chuck. The M12 right angle drill also features a built-in LED work light, battery gauge and extended paddle switch.  Check out all the Milwaukee M12 tools at Ohio Power Tool.

Milwaukee M18 Compact Band Saw 2629-22

You may remember the post a few weeks ago on the corded Compact Band Saw 6249-6 ($199), well the cordless M18 Band Saw 2629-22 ($399) shares the same basic sizes and dimensions. They also both use the 35-3/8” blade and feature the built-in LED work light however the corded version does have variable speed while the cordless does not.

The new compact M18 Band Saw is 45% lighter than the Deep Cut V28 Band Saw but still has a 3-1/4” capacity large enough to handle many common tasks. Th light weight compact size paired with the built in LED work light this is possibly the best band saw on the market for getting into tight spaces. The M18 also offers up to 3x faster cut time and 3x longer battery life when compared to other 18 volt cordless band saws. If you already have other M18 tools and batteries you can also pick up the tool only version M18 Band Saw 2629-20 ($219).

If you have any questions about any of the Milwaukee portable band saws or any of the Milwaukee M18 tool feel free to call the pros at Ohio Power Tool 800-242-4424 or email any questions to sales@ohiopowertool.com.

Milwaukee M12 Sub-Scanner 2290-21 Review

In stock now, the M12 Sub-Scanner 2290-21 was originally announced some time ago as part of the new M12 Test & Measurement tools (clamp-gun & temp-gun have been delayed). The Sub-Scanner is very very easy to use for finding studs, metal in concrete or live electrical wires. Without looking at any directions I’m pretty sure an 8 year old could operate this machine. Simply select stud or metal on the thumb control, hit CAL and you are in business. The Sub-Scanner has 4 wheels that easily glide over any surface. The only settings you can change are sound, units of measure (us/metric) and depth on stud finder. Checkout this Photo Album for more pictures.

On stud mode it shows a basic left, center, right which makes it almost idiot proof when finding studs. The “V” on the top of the tool lights up anytime you go over a live wire which is probably a pretty smart safety feature as well. You will feel very confident when you have found the center of the stud unlike some other stud detectors that simply beep or light up.

In metal mode the display is slightly more advanced but just as easy to use. It doesn’t give left or right indicators but does provide a depth reading and a Ferrous vs Non-Ferrous indicator. The tool is pretty accurate in metal mode; in the above picture you can see the rebar almost exactly 3.5” in the parking block.

Checkout all the Milwaukee M12 tools available on Ohio Power Tool. There are some very exciting things that have come out recently and more that will be launching soon. We will do our best to keep you up to date on all of it.

Milwaukee M12 PVC / PEX Shear Cutter 2470-21

How to cut PVC the easy way with this innovative tool, yet another addition to the Milwaukee M12 battery system. It is clear they are really going after the Plumbers, Electricians and other tradesman with their compact 12 volt tools and this is another perfect example. The M12 2470-21 ($199) is designed specifically for cutting PVC & PEX tubing and really isn’t made for much else, unless you wanted to remove an extra finger or two. If you are a plumber, install sprinklers or work with PVC a lot this could be a very handy tool. Currently the most popular alternative would be a manual ratcheting PVC cutter like the Ridgid RC-2375 ($87) which can get tiring if you are using it all day.

The cutter itself puts out 1,900 in-lbs torque which is plenty to get through 2” PVC in about 3 seconds. The 12 volt lithium battery is rated to make over 200 cuts per charge. Using the tool is very simple, hold down the safety and pull the variable speed trigger. Once the cut is made there is a separate quick release trigger, not sure why there is a reverse option on the cutter as the quick release works much better. The blade is very easy to change and the wrench for removing it is conveniently stored on the tool, another nice feature. Checkout this Photo Album for more images.

Will a tool like this be successful? The market for a PVC cutter is much smaller than for a handy tool like the M12 Hackzall and it will depend on if plumbers will adopt it. It is in a similar boat to the M12 Copper Cutter ($219) which seemed like a great idea but hasn’t seen a big shift away from the tried & true manual copper cutters like the Ridgid 118 ($28). However the manual copper cutters are significantly cheaper and can cut almost as quick with little effort. The price gap for the PVC cutters (manual vs M12) is much smaller, the 2470-20 (bare tool) is only $129 and the manual PVC cutters require much more effort. Hopefully the new Milwaukee 2470-21 will find lots of success among professional.

Milwaukee AC/DC Chargers for M12 & M18

Typically I wouldn’t be that excited about a couple of new battery chargers but these are pretty cool and super convenient. Now I just wish they would do away with the standard chargers and make these the only options. If you are interested in the M12 charger 2510-20 ($79) it is in stock now at Ohio Power Tool. The M18 charger 2710-20 ($99) will be expected in about a month or so but you can pre-order it now on Ohio Power Tool. See the full press release below:

MILWAUKEE, WI – Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation introduces the new M12™ and M18™ AC/DC Wall and Vehicle Chargers for LITHIUM-ION batteries. Designed for the work day of the professional tradesman, the new chargers combine the functionality of a wall charger and vehicle charger into one unit to increase utility for the user.

“Many professionals such as service or utility workers go from one jobsite to another all day long. Others have long commutes to work or are on jobsites with limited power. Whatever the case may be, users now have one charger that can charge their M12™ and M18™ LITHIUM-ION batteries either in a traditional wall outlet or in their vehicle,” says Paul Fry, Director of M12 for Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation. “Not only is this more convenient, but users can now save money by buying only one charger that can adapt to their environment.”

With the introduction of the new chargers and plans to grow the M12™ & M18™ cordless platform in the future, Milwaukee® continues to expand its leadership position and commitment to the LTHIUM-ION cordless categories.

Ridgid Explorer vs Milwaukee M12 M-Spector AV - Full Review

Previously we did a post comparing some of the preliminary stats of the Milwaukee M-Spector AV vs Explorer however at that time we were just looking at the numbers from the M-Spector AV press release. Now the M12 M-Spector AV is in stock (at Ohio Power Tool at least) and we can do a more hands on comparison and see some of the differences between the two models.

Right off the bat you’ll see a good size difference in price, Ridgid Explorer 30063 ($690) vs Milwaukee M12 M-Spector AV 2311-21 ($399). So what does the extra $291 get you with the Ridgid and is it worth it? On the surface these two models look very similar, both feature 320x240 resolutin 3.5” screens, 17mm heads and ability to record still images & videos.

The Milwaukee M12 M-Spector AV 2311-21 even has several advantages despite the cheaper price tag. By simply being a part of the Milwaukee M12 line it gets a natural advantage as many people already have batteries, chargers and other tools. The actual M12 battery also lasts longer and charges faster than the Ridgid Explorer lithium battery, although I haven’t heard any complaints about Explorer battery life, it is always a big plus to have more time between charges. The Milwaukee also features a built in microphone for recording where the Ridgid requires a separate microphone.

The Ridgid Micro Explorer 30063 as you would expect for the price, obviously have several advantages over the Milwaukee. A big feature which is very clear when comparing them side by side is the self-leveling feature on the Explorer. This automatically keeps the image right side up which can be important when you are inspecting a pipe that takes a bend or just to keep you sanity. The Milwaukee does have a 180 degree flip option (shown above) which helps sometimes but other times just goes from one awkward view to another.

The Ridgid also wins against the Milwaukee with a much better designed camera head. The Explorer has 4 LED lights vs the Milwaukee single LED light. The head is also a better design with rounded metal face vs Milwaukee’s flat plastic piece. The Milwaukee head makes me nervous because it is very common to see abuse to these heads. The tips get pushed with considerable force to make any turns and all that pressure on that plastic piece… The Explorer also comes with the magnet, hook & mirror attachments (see below) which have proven very useful for specific tasks like pulling wires, recovering dropped screws or jewelry, etc.

The final reason you might pick the Micro Explorer SeeSnake over the Milwaukee is that while Ridgid isn’t building more products to use the same battery they are building products to work specifically with the Explorer. The microDRAIN 33103 for instance is a 30’ SeeSnake reel build specifically to attach to the Explorer and do line inspections. Although the microDRAIN has only been out for a number of weeks it has already had huge success among plumbers. This is the first and only camera that can pass through a toilet trap and is powered off the Explorer power supply. The Micro Explorer also features an expansion slot for future upgrades which, my best guess, could include thermal imaging or other cool technologies.

The verdict, while these two units look similar I would argue they are different enough that there are good reasons to select each. The Ridgid Explorer is a better unit all around but for many applications the added features may not justify the added price. If you need a simple handheld inspection tool you may consider the M12 M-Spector AV 2311-21 ($399) over the Ridgid Micro 31118 ($223) or the standard M-Spector 2310-21 ($249). Also if you need to simply document the inspection with images or video but don’t necessarily need to give the video to a customer the M-Spector AV is a good option. If you are planning to provide a copy to customers I would strongly suggest the Explorer using self leveling and keep them from getting seasick from an upside down spinning videos. Also I would recommend the Ridgid Explorer to any plumber hands down. Even if you are not yet ready to invest in the 30’ microDRAIN there are many additional products that will all be based on this platform coming down the pipe and when you are talking about SeeSnake reels which can cost thousands, paying a few hundred extra now is well worth it.

For many more pictures checkout this Facebook Photo Album. If you have any other questions on any Handheld Inspection Equipment give the professionals at Ohio Power Tool a call 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com.

New Milwaukee Compact Band Saw 6242-6

Milwaukee Tool is very well known for their portable band saws. Earlier this year they announced a completely redesigned Deep Cut Band Saw 6232-6N that significantly increased power, speed & overall performance. Because one size does not always fit all, Milwaukee is now coming out with a Compact Band Saw 6242-6 with a more economically friendly price of $199 (Ohio Power Tool). The new smaller band saw will weigh only 9.5 lbs, 45% less than the Deep Cut but still have a fairly large capacity of 3-1/4” vs the Deep Cut at 4-7/8”. With the smaller size and light weight design it is natural to assume it will be used in tighter spaces, so it made sense that they also added an LED work light currently not available on the Deep Cut model. The Compact Band Saw will be the size as the new M18 band saw that will also be coming out soon, more on that later.

If you have any questions about any of the Milwaukee Portable Band Saws do not hesitate to contact the pros at Ohio Power Tool, 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com.

New M12 Radio 2590-20 is Coming Soon

The M12 Radio 2590-20 is one of the common things people will ask for when talking about new products coming for Milwaukee’s M12 tool line. Now finally I can say with mild confidence we will see these in September.  The inevitable next question is of course does it charge the M12 batteries and unfortunately the answer is still no for this generation of Milwaukee Radio. Apparently there is some patent out there with another brand that keeps that from happening. That being said there are some very exciting features for the new M12 Radio including its incredibly small size (10.5”x4”x7”), exclusive digital processor, water tight MP3 compartment and ABS shock absorbing protective housing. These compact jobsite radios should be available in stores sometime in mid-late September but you can always pre-order now from Ohio Power Tool for $99 to ensure you are the first one on the block with this cool new toy.

Miwaukee Introduces Shockwave Accessories for Impact Tools

Recently Milwaukee introduced a completely new line of accessories designed to work specifically with Impact tools. These funny looking bits are designed to take the abuse of that constant impact force and the shockwave bits are claiming up to 10x life. The whole line will be available shortly on the Milwaukee Tool page of OhioPowerTool.com. (29 piece kit 48-32-4401 $19, Ohio Power Tool) Also we will do a follow up post on some real world testing applications but in the meantime checkout the official Milwaukee Tool press release below.

MILWAUKEE, WI – Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation introduces over 80 new products in its new line of Shockwave™ Impact Duty accessories. Delivering high performance and functionality, the full range solution was designed to stand up to elevated and extreme torque applications. The line includes high performance drill bits, nut drivers, sockets, bit holders and adapters.

"Impact tools are one of the fastest growing tool segments in the market today, but many accessory linescannot hold up under  the high torque of  impact applications,” says Mike Kirby, Sr. Product Manager-Accessories of Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation. "The new Shockwave™ Impact Duty Accessories offer a wider range of solutions for every user, and are engineered to absorb the stress of higher torque applications."

Made from a custom engineered steel and heat treated for high shock resistance, the Shockwave™ Impact Duty driver bits feature an innovatively designed Shock Zone™ geometry to absorb impact. The combination of proprietary material, heat treatment, and geometry deliver up to 10X longer life than the competition.

The product offering also includes user friendly features such as color coding on the nut drivers for easy size identifications and a thin wall construction on the professional grade sockets for easy access in tight areas. Broadly targeting cordless users, the Shockwave™ Impact Duty accessory line is not only ideal for  heavy duty impact applications, but is a full system solution for all the user’s drilling and fastening needs.

Milwaukee M18 Hammer Drill vs their other M18 Hammer Drill

Yes that’s right Milwaukee has 2 M18 Hammer Drills the 2611-22 ($349) & 2602-22 ($299). The original M18 2611-22 is slightly larger with 650 in lbs torque while the new compact M18 2602-22 has 550 in lbs, still plenty of torque (in fact same as DeWalt’s 24V). So why 2 M18 ½” hammer drills and not say 1 SDS hammer? Milwaukee is covering all their bases with the M18 line so my guess is whatever you are looking for from a 18v cordless line is probably somewhere in the works. Personally I can’t feel the difference in weight, if there is any, the “compact” is only slightly shorter and virtually the same height, they use the same battery about the only difference I could tell beyond price & torque was the 2611 has dual led lights while the 2602 only has the 1 led light. The big advantage the new 2602-22 has currently beyond the lower price is the hot special currently from Ohio Power Tool which includes a FREE M18 Sawzall 2620-20 ($199). Obviously that deal is a limited time special, so I would take advantage now. All the Milwaukee Tools are also available for the current Free Shipping offer (Use Coupon Code: AUGUST) from Ohio Power Tool.

If you have any questions on any of the Milwaukee M18 Cordless tools, feel free to call the pros at Ohio Power Tool, 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com. Check back soon for more exciting products coming from the Milwaukee M18 line.

M12 M-Spector AV vs Ridgid Micro Explorer (Preliminary)

Just announced, Milwaukee will be coming out with two models of the M-Spector AV, the 2311-21 (17mm head) and 2312-21 (9.5mm head). The M-Spector AV is designed to compete directly with the Ridgid SeeSnake Micro Explorer which has been a tremendous success. The M-Spector AV features match up with the Explorer including 3.5” screen with 320x240 resolution. Both have the ability to record voice over videos, the Milwaukee does comes with a 2GB memory card vs the Ridgid with a small internal memory and mail away to get a Free 2GB card (but $9.95 anywhere). The Milwaukee unit has the ability to rotate live or captured images but it does not mention anything about digital self leveling which is a huge feature of the Ridgid Explorer. The Explorer also has expansion slots which could include upgrades for thermal imaging at some point down the road which I am not sure the Milwaukee offers. Pricing information is not available yet, I imagine it will be in line with the Explorer’s price of $690 or perhaps below. The M-Spector AV is also part of the Milwaukee M12 line, one of the fastest growing and most successful cordless power tool lines on the market today.

I imagine most plumbers will stick with the Ridgid product for the digital self leveling and the fact that it works with the Ridgid MicroDrain to go through toilet traps. That being said the reason the Ridgid Explorer has been so successful is that it has opened up so many new markets. From HVAC, remodelers, electricians, mechanics, inspection, safety, maintenance staff to Biologists studying prairie dogs in Wyoming, the audience is wide open for these new borescope cameras.

M12 Drill/Driver 2410-22 vs Bosch 12v PS30-2A – Part 2

The Milwaukee 2410-22 have been shipped and those that pre-ordered from Ohio Power Tool should be receiving their orders starting today. I thought it would be a good opportunity to take a few pictures and compare the sizes and some of the features verse the 12V Bosch PS30-2A, currently the most popular compact drill/driver.

The Milwaukee is only slightly smaller than the Bosch which I had actually thought it would be even smaller yet, side-by-side. I do like the feel of the metal chuck on the Milwaukee and it has a battery gauge, which the Bosch does not. Also I like the fact that the Milwaukee stands up on the base; for some reason the Bosch is just unbalanced enough that it can’t. The Milwaukee case is the traditional red hard plastic case while the Bosch uses a smaller soft case.  The batteries for these two lines are almost identical but obviously not compatible and the LED lights on the tools are about the same. The full spec comparison is on the previous 2410-22 vs PS30-2A post, I just though it would be nice to get some photo side-by-sides out there as well.

Milwaukee Tool Heavy Duty Super Fan

I recently had the pleasure to visit Eric at his home and see where some of the Milwaukee Tools from Ohio Power Tool end up. By day a mild-mannered CPA, after hour a man of many talents equipped with the latest Heavy Duty gear. Some of his Milwaukee tools include: Right Angle Drill, Super Sawzall, Jig Saw, 7-1/4” Circular Saw, ½” Drill, Orbital Sander, M12 Drill/Driver, V28 Hammer Drill, 2-1/4” Router Kit, Radio, M12 M-Spector, M12 Hackzall, M18 Compact Drill, M18 Impact Driver, most of the accessory kits and currently waiting on some of the new 9” Diamond Grit Sawzall Blades. While his setup was cleaned up for the visit, he does keep all the tool kits and accessory kits on the wall as you see here. Eric said it keeps everything out of the way, maximizing space and when he needs a couple tools for a project everything is right at his fingers to grab and go. He has had many tools over the years but fell in love with the Milwaukee 7-1/4” circular saw he received as a gift several years ago, really impressed with how well it stood up he bought another Milwaukee and another. Now he doesn’t even consider buying another brand if Milwaukee makes a similar tool.

Some of his recent projects include finishing the basement I was in, a real nice job by the way, adding a deck out back, finishing the garage and currently working on an IPE Wood deck at his father’s house.  He is also a bit of a mechanic and did some nice work on a 1991 Mustang 5.0 which he sold earlier this year. Another thing that really impressed me was his Ingersoll Rand compressor set up which can be used in the basement next to the workbench but he also ran a line and hookup in the garage, it is a nice system, I’m jealous.

Thanks again Eric, for letting me come over and checkout the digs. For all your Milwaukee Tool needs visit www.OhioPowerTool.com. Currently there are some amazing deals for Free Tools with the M12 & M18 lines but they end June 30th so get your orders in this weekend!

New M12 LED Work Light 49-24-0146

Another addition the ever expanding Milwaukee M12 Tool line is the LED work light 49-24-0146 ($39). The xenon incandescent M12 work light 49-24-0145 ($19) will still be available, you will simply now have a choice between the two. Both models share a similar design with 90 degree movable head and magnet for hands free work. The new LED M12 is promising double the run of the traditional M12 flashlight however it is also packing double the price. The battery is an LEDs so traditionally lasts 10x longer as well as giving a more natural white light (5600K).

It’s a tough call price vs runtime, you will need to make that decision for your own but I am happy we at least now have the option. Check out all the Milwaukee M12 tools at Ohio Power Tool.

Milwaukee M12 Drill/Driver 2410-22 vs Bosch 12V PS30-2A

The 3/8” Drill/Driver has been a long awaited addition to the Milwaukee M12 line. The 2410-22 ($149) comes with 2410 tool, (2) M12 batteries, charger & case but the drill/driver tool is also available as 2410-20 ($98) which is just the tool by itself. The closest competition for the new drill/driver would be the Bosch 12V Max PS30-2A ($139) which has been out for over a year and is currently leading the 12V compact drill/driver market. Milwaukee is trying hard to improve upon the already successful PS30 design and create a compelling reason to pick their compact drill over anyone else.

Milwaukee M12 2410-22
No Load Speed (2 speed): 0-400/0-1,500 RPM
Torque: 250 in-lbs
Single Sleeve: Metal
Weight: 2.5 lbs
Length: 7-3/8”

Bosch 12V Max PS30-2A
No Load Speed (2 speed): 0-400/0-1,100 RPM
Torque: 220 in-lbs
Single Sleeve: Plastic
Weight: 2.4 lbs
Length: 8-1/2”

In comparing the stats you can see how Milwaukee has worked to build a better tool… at least when it comes to the numbers. Obviously with an extra year of development time they are going to make it faster with more torque. It is also awesome to see that the M12 is over an inch shorter than the Bosch, making it even easier to carry in the tool belt. Adding the metal sleeve on this tool also makes me happy and think back to the introduction of the first generation Bosch PS20 when the tough sell was convincing people such a small tool had a place among professional (see: These Ain’t No Kids Toys 8/23/2007). Clearly we have come a long way and with Milwaukee adding so many M12 tools aimed specifically at Plumbers & Electricians I think everyone has embraced the idea 12 volt tools defiantly have their place among the pros.

If you have any questions about any of the Milwaukee M12 or Bosch 12V Max tools feel free to email sales@ohiopowertool.com or call 800-242-4424. Once I get my hands on the Milwaukee M12 2410-22 we can do a more hands on comparison of the two different models and see if the Milwaukee stands out as much as the stats might indicate. Stay tuned.

Detection Tools: M12 Sub-Scanner vs DMD4K vs D-Tect 100

The Milwaukee M12 Sub-Scanner 2290-21 is due out in July and will be able to detect wood studs, pipes, AC wires and rebar in concrete up to 6” deep. Currently the closest competing product would be the Bosch DMD4k Multi-Detector which can also detect various types of materials but only detect rebar in concrete 4” deep. The design of the Milwaukee is also much easier for scanning large areas with the 4 wheel design, it will role across a surface with ease, perfect for mapping out & drilling large areas of concrete.

The M12 Sub-Scanner looks very much like another Bosch detection tool I found on the German site called the D-Tect 100 Wallscanner (see here http://www.wallscanner.de/). This gadget shares the 4 wheel design of the Milwaukee Sub-Scanner but has a much larger display which displays the objects graphically similar to how a fish finder works. It gives a very good representation of where objects are, how deep and continues to show items you already passed over. This product of course is not available in the US and there are no expected dates but hopefully we will see this item in the US down the road.

Milwaukee Laser Temp-Gun Thermometers 2266-20 & 2277-21

The New surface temperature Temp-Guns from Milwaukee are available as part of the M12 system or available for use with standard Alkaline batteries. All of the available units are built for professional use with 1.5% accuracy range, K-Type thermocouple input and <500ms response time. There are however several differences in the models other than the power system.

Laser Temp-Gun 2266-20

At a lower price the 2266-20 Temp-Gun has a temp range from -20 to 932 F, a 12 to 1 distance to spot ratio and a slide rail system that allows accessories such as the voltage detector / light tool to be attached and used as part of the Temp-Gun. This gun meets and/or beats basically every competitor even up to the $200 price range and with the added accessories can offers features well beyond anything else.

M12 Laser Temp-Gun 2277-21

The M12 2277-21 Temp-Gun is truly in a class by itself. With an expanded temperature range of -40 to 1472 F and a 40 to 1 distance to spot ratio, you get improved safety and accuracy in even the most demanding situations. The M12 unit also features built-in LED work light and non-contact voltage detection. The cherry on top is that the M12 Temp-Gun 2277-21 features humidity and dew point measurements. If you currently own other M12 tools and don’t need the additional M12 battery, case and charger, you can also get the M12 Temp-Gun as a tool only, see 2277-20.

Hopefully this helps clarify the difference between the Milwaukee Temp-Guns. These tools are not only convenient and a really cool technology they are also an important safety tool which might warn of potential electrical problems. If you have any questions about the new Milwaukee Test & Measure tools please feel free to email sales@ohiopowertool.com and the guys at Ohio Power Tool will be happy to help.

Milwaukee Test & Measure Tools - Multimeters & Forkmeters

As you may have already seen from the two posts yesterday Milwaukee has a lot of new test & measure tools coming in July. Just to clarify these are not some re-branded cheap import items painted red. Milwaukee has been working on these new tools for some time and has hired industry leaders, in some case from top competitors, to build these new test & measuring tools from the ground up. The group systematically looked at each tool individually, compared it with all the competition and found new ways to improve the functionality through extensive interviews with real professionals in the trade.

Digital Multimeter 2217-20

The new digital multimeter 2217-20 from Milwaukee has several features most competitor models do not currently offer. One problem Milwaukee looked to combat is the “Ghost Voltage” phenomenon where energized lines create a magnetic field affecting other wires in the bundle resulting in higher voltage readings than actually exist in the individual wires. The Lo-Z feature eliminates this problem and gives accurate readings to the user. In addition to stronger more durable housing, easier one handed controls and larger clear displays the 2217-20 also features a slide rail system to add proprietary accessories, such as the Volt Detector / Work Light mentioned in our previous post, for additional functionality.

Fork Meters – Electrician 2205-20 & HVAC/R 2206-20

Both of the new Folk Meters incorporate several features most competitors do not such as non-contact voltage detection and LED work lights. Some differences in the two models are the 2205-20 electrician’s model features the Lo-Z measurement, mentioned above to eliminate “Ghost Voltage”, while the HVAC/R 2206-20 feature DC microamps & contact temperature reading more commonly used in those industries.

All 3 of these tools are part of the Milwaukee Alkaline Test & Measure tools which basically means they use standard batteries vs the M12 Test & Measure tools also available. If you have any questions about any of the new tools contact the pros at Ohio Power Tool at 800-242-4424.

New Milwaukee Voltage Detector & Work Light 2201-20

Another new Milwaukee tool that is part of the new Test & Measure line is the 2201-20 Voltage Detector. You may think voltage detectors are all the same but the Milwaukee features options not available with most competitors. The 2201-20 features a built in LED work light which is 3 times stronger than the closest competitor with a light. The unit will also slide into the Laser Temp-Gun and Digital Multimeter to increase the tools performance and usability. I haven’t seen these units in person so I’m not sure how that works yet but will be happy to report more on how exactly that works once I get my hands on one.

This unit is relatively inexpensive at $25, available for PRE-ORDER now on Ohio Power Tool. Check out the full line of New Milwaukee Test & Measure tools which fall into two general categories based on their batteries M12 Test & Measure or Alkaline Test & Measure. Expect to see these units on the shelf sometime in July.

Milwaukee M12, M18 & V28 Free Tool Deals

Typically Milwaukee will run a promotion for a free tool or battery deal a few times a year with a lot of success. Currently they are running this deal on all their cordless tools simultaneously as well as launching several new products.

Milwaukee M12 Free Tool Deal

The M12 deal applies to most tools and combo kits in the line up although I did not see the M-spector or Micro Driver on the list. This deal is available until June 30th.  Milwaukee has also included 2 new products that work with this deal, the 2410-22 3/8” M12 drill/driver and 2320-21 M12 2-beam plumb laser level. More info to come on those...  There are 5 available FREE items to choose from including the new (available in a few days) M12 Power Port 2349-20. The most value for this deal would be the Hackzall 2420-20 ($110). – M12 Tools & Rebate PDF

Milwaukee M18 Free Tool Deal

This deal was available last month and runs through June 30th along with the Milwaukee M12 Deal. This deal includes almost all the M18 tool kits and combos except the compact kits like the 2691-22 which is only $199 anyway. The 2680-20 Grinder ($219) is probably the best value in the deal but another tool maybe more useful in your situation. – M18 Tools & Rebate PDF

Milwaukee V28 Free Tool Deal

This deal is a little more limited than the M12 or M18 deals. It only applies to the 4-tool combo, 3-tool combo and V28 Hammer Drill. The free tool option is also more limited to the ½” square impact, V28 battery or V28 wet/dry vac. The best deal here is the Impact ($271) but with a new combo kit a 3rd battery is also a good choice. I’m not sure who would choice the vacuum as they typically retail for under $100 but these are great add-ons in specific applications. – V28 Tools & Rebate PDF

The reason these deals are so rich is simple. Statistically people don’t take the time to send in the mail-in rebate. Commonly 25% or less of mail-in rebates from tool vendors get used. Why??? I have no clue but if you take advantage you can potentially see up to 40% back in FREE TOOLS. Think of it this way, Milwaukee is putting 10% of all sales back into a rebate pot. If only 1 in 4 take advantage, that 1 guy gets a much bigger deal and their marketing teams get to field day. Be that guy, send in the rebate and get awesome stuff free.

Both the 6” & 9” blades feature .042” width and 1” height. Cost on the 6” 48-00-1440 will be around $12 and the 9” 48-00-1450 will be around $15, an amazing deal if these live up the 30x longer and 2x faster claims.

8 NEW MILWAUKEE TEST & MEASURE TOOLS

Today Milwaukee released a handful of press releases talking about their new Test & Measure tools. It appears some of the tools will be apart of the M12 cordless line, while other tools will use ordinary alkaline batteries and some tools will be available with both configurations. These tools are aimed to compete directly with products from manufacturers like Fluke. A great fit for Milwaukee Tools who have already aimed the M12 tools at plumbers, electricians and HVAC users with tools like the M-Spector and Hackzall.  Check back soon for updates and products test on all the new goodies. Read the full press release below:

Milwaukee Power Tool's New Website

Milwaukee Electric Tool has recently updated its website www.milwaukeetool.com and there are many new features which have been improved for the new website. Graphically the new site is very attractive and easy to navigate. The new site is also heavily focused on providing a direct link to purchase products. These links go to a Google Shopping search page which allows customers to select from a list of potential retailers and select the best price. In many cases this system does an effective job however searching the new products I found many cases where the google page would show the Milwaukee tools along with several their competitors. From a shopping experience I don’t see a big problem with also having some competitor models in the search field but if I were Milwaukee spending a lot of time and money to drive traffic to my site only to have a potential customers at the last minute switch to a competitor’s brand that might be frustrating.

An example of this would be the very first tool listed on the “New Products & Offers” page gives you these results (google page) for the 6116-30 grinder at the time of this post it provided 3 Milwaukee models (although not the correct model) from Amazon, Ebay & Ohio Power Tool. It also displays 4 Makita models, a Black & Decker, Hitachi and Metabo. For old models of tools the system works better but new models are typically where you are going to find people looking to manufacturer sites for more info. Hopefully they will work to improve some of those systems. Overall I think the site is a huge step forward from the user side.

Check out Ohio Power Tool if you are interested in shopping for Milwaukee Tools, most of the new products are online and ready to ship today.

New Milwaukee M18 High Torque Cordless Impact Wrenches

Milwaukee has really gotten serious about the cordless impact market. I think they may now the most complete line of cordless impact wrenches on the market, even surpassing automotive giants like Ingersoll Rand IQv and Chicago Pneumatic.

Available May 1 there are two new ½” cordless Milwaukee M18 high torque impact drivers. The two new models are the 2662-22 & 2663-22 which are almost identical tools with the only different in the anvil. The anvil on the M18 2662-22 features a Pin Detent, while the 2663-22 uses a Friction Ring. Personally I would say get the friction ring version, as the new rings are like $1.20 and very easy to get and replace.

Both of the new Milwaukee versions feature 450 ft-lbs torque, highest of any cordless impacts on the market. The Milwaukee M18 line currently features several other impacts including ¼” hex, 3/8” square as well as the current ½” impact 2652-22 which also features the pin detent type anvil. The current ½” impact is has a higher RPM & IPM speed but lower torque, below 200 ft-lbs. In addition to these 5 models of M18 impacts there will also be a ¾” square and 7/16” hex available later this summer. The ¾” will have tons of juice for a cordless at 525 ft-lbs but a good ¾” pneumatic would be around 1,200 ft-lbs so keep that in mind.

Now is the Time to pick up these new impacts as well as any other Milwaukee M18 tools at Ohio Power Tool because you will also get your choice from 5 free M18 tools & M18 XC battery. In addition Ohio Power Tool is also offering Free Shipping for all Milwaukee Tools in April (coupon code:april). The impacts won’t be out till May 1st but the coupon will work with pre orders placed this month so get your orders in now and save on shipping and get a free tool.

Around the World – Milwaukee V28 Jigsaw

I was snooping around Milwaukee’s German site and found this little gem. I personally like this design for a jigsaw better than a traditional one. I’ve heard nothing about this coming to the US but hopefully we will see this sometime soon as it would be a very welcome addition to the lineup.

If you are interested in picking up some other Milwaukee V28 cordless tools in the mean time Ohio Power Tool is still running the free battery promotion on any tool kit or combo kit. That is a $150 value instantly. The promo will be good until the end of the month unless supplies run out before then.

Bosch vs Milwaukee vs Dewalt vs Makita

The chart above shows website traffic to each company’s main website. It doesn’t take into consideration tool sales, units sold, product specific websites (ie boschedge.com, boschdaredevil.com, etc) or any other outside factors. The graph simply measures web traffic reported from a 3rd party source. In my mind this is a good measure of what is popular and the overall trend of how a company is doing. Overall I think it is pleasantly surprising that the lines weren’t all strait down. Watch the news or read the paper and all you hear is about how the sky is falling, the economy is in the tank and we are all going back to the dark ages but the year over year numbers are up for 3 out of 4 of the largest power tool companies. Again these are just web traffic numbers and not sales or profit numbers, but that’s still pretty positive I think.

The obvious thing that jumps out is what’s going on with Dewalt? Historically it’s been arguably the most popular tool brand, with tons of very loyal customers however recently the talk in forums has been a little more on the sour side. Black & Decker now owns Dewalt as well as Porter Cable and the overall perception I have read from loyal users is that the quality has definitely come down. The die hard Porter Cable guys are possibly the most unhappy (unfortunately they don’t have their own website; it’s a shared site with Delta and other products so we can’t look at it in the chart). Years ago Porter Cable was considered one of the highest quality professional tool brands on the market, now they are comparable to Ryobi, better for a DIY occasional user.

The second thing that jumped out to me is that Bosch Tools is up 95% in web traffic from last year. That is awesome! There have been some exciting new products including a completely new 18V cordless line, new 12V Max tool and a wide array of new accessories but overall I don’t think this is what is driving the gains. The brand remains very strong, continues to make a high quality product, great innovations in their new products, good marketing and very few layoffs while other companies in general have seen cuts across the board.

Milwaukee Tools also had some serious gains of 26% in web traffic from the previous 12 months. They had probably the biggest product launches with the new M18 lithium ion line and M12 lithium tool line. Both lines I would consider very successful launches.

Makita Tools also had modest gains but without a new complete line of tools to launches I think they did a good job in keeping traffic up with the new products they did have as well as strong promotions and relationships with MLS, Suzuki, Rockstar and sponsored events.

Overall I think these numbers are pretty positive and sure lots of people are just window shopping but I think it’s a good look at the overall popularity of the brands and the trends. There are plenty of other tool brands to compare or you might want to see your site’s traffic compared to your competitors, I would strongly encourage anyone to do some comparisons of your own at www.compete.com.

Milwaukee M18 Grinder & Jig Saw

When the Milwaukee M18 line of tools was launched last year there was the promise of a cordless grinder and jigsaw coming first quarter 2009. True to their word these two new tools should be available very shortly. Both new tools are available as tool only or in a kit with 2 XC batteries, case & charger. The M18 Grinder/Cut-Off 2680-22 features many of the same advances as their new corded grinders including 4-pole motor, overload protection, debris baffles, tool free burst resistant guard and the only cordless grinder on the market with a paddle switch design. The M18 Jig Saw 2545-22 was designed from the ground up to be one of the most powerful cordless jig saws on the market. We are looking forward to both of these much needed new additions and can’t wait for additional cordless tools coming later this year.

Both of these new M18 tools are available now at Ohio Power Tool for pre-order and should be arriving in stores in the near future. Video demos on both of these tools are already in the works, so stay tuned.

Valentine’s Day Power Tool Gifts for Everyone

Last year around this time we did a post; Women vs Men comparing gifts we typically get ladies to what an equal gift for a guy would be. This year I though a simple unisex list would work because I know there are lots of girls out there that really want power tools just as much as guys… I just don’t happen to be with one.

  1. Dremel Multi-Max $99 – I am mostly convinced that everyone on the planet wants one of these tools. Guy, girl, grandpa, your neighbors, everyone, the good news is a such a low price it’s within reach for almost everyone. If they already have one a few additional accessories would be a great idea.
  2. Bosch PS30 3/8” Drill/Driver $147 – This drill is small lightweight and comfortable enough for my grandmother to use. At the same time it is an incredibly powerful drill, with good battery life and recently held its own when compared with other brand’s 18-20 volt drills in a Popular Mechanics test.
  3. Milwaukee M12 Hackzall $179 – This new “mini Sawzall” is incredibly versatile and great tool to have in almost any situation. Perfect for use with drywall, pvc, wood, metal, plastic and so much else. Around the house or on the jobsite this compact tool does an amazing job. Plus it has a FREE battery or flashlight deal.
  4. Milwaukee M18 4+1 Tool Combo Kit $459 – Some of the most powerful 18 volt tools on the market today the new M18 cordless tools either match or beat almost all other competition tool by tool. Lightweight and extremely powerful this is the ultimate tool kit. Includes: Hammer Drill, Circular Saw, Sawzall, Flashlight and bonus Impact Driver while supplies last.

These are just a few general ideas maybe your sweetheart really wants a Tanaka Gas Drill? We are no responsible for ill suited gifts for your particular valentine. Really I just saw that picture of Cupid and laughed so hard I had to find a reason to post it on the site. If you have any questions about power tools feel free to email Ohio Power Tool at sale@ohiopowertool.com.

Around the World: Milwaukee Laser Tools?

Checking out the Milwaukee websites for Europe I came across the Milwaukee Laser Range Finder LM60. This looks like a similar tool to the Bosch DLR165K range finder. The 60 meter range on this tool is just slightly more than the Bosch 165 feet range, at about 195 feet if my math is right. I would think if it’s successful in Europe it will make its way state side although there has been no mention of this tool so it would not be within the first half of this year.

Below is the official press release from Milwaukee in Europe:

Laser device for higher precision - Milwaukee LM60 makes measuring simpler, faster and more precise

Skilled craftsmen only achieve perfect working results if they have taken precise measurements in the planning phase. The common measuring methods using a folding rule or an ultrasonic device are awkward and often imprecise. The LM60 laser device from heavy-duty manufacturer Milwaukee makes things easier, enabling distance, areas and room volume to be exactly measured indoors and outdoors.

With just one turn of the hand the device is ready to take measurements. Even if the distances to be measured are long, for example in buildings under construction, only one person is needed to carry out the measurements. The device measures distances up to 60 metres with accuracy of +/- 1,5 millimetres. By comparison, conventional ultrasonic measurement devices are 50 times less precise and will only measure up to 15 metres.

The measurement result is immediately shown on the large, clearly laid out display, and built-in illumination enables results also to be read in the dark. What’s more, the Milwaukee LM60 shows the measurements in the metric system or in inches. Indirect measurements can be made using the device or individual measurements added. If, for example, the entire floor area of an apartment or house has to be measured the addition function makes it easy to quickly total up the various measurements of the individual rooms.

Thanks to its compact design the LM60 is ideal for measuring places which are difficult to access. The laser beam takes precise measurements in the smallest corners. Furthermore, the LM60 is suitable for use outdoors. The laser dot and targeting assistance make it possible to precisely hit the desired targets even at a considerable distance. The robust housing is totally rubber dust protected making it suitable for tough assignments on building sites.

With its handy size the LM60 fits into any pocket and is easy to take anywhere thanks to its strap and the bag supplied. Further practical characteristics of the LM60 are the battery-saving automatic-off function and the low-battery display. The batteries are also supplied with the device.

New Portable Milwaukee Band Saw 6232-6N

Milwaukee Tool just announced the next generation of portable band saws. The new Milwaukee Band Saw 6232-6N is 40% faster than the previous Milwaukee models and 20% faster than the closest competitor, the Dewalt DWM120K. The Milwaukee motor was updated from a 6 amp to a 10.5 amp motor and is now the most powerful on the market. The improvements don’t stop there, with aluminum motor housing, better saw balance, 2 finger trigger, variable speed dial, improved blade protection and new bearings this is a very solidly built band saw.

The band saw’s deep cutting capacity is 4-7/8” however it can cut up to 6” round pipe when rotating. The improved T handle grip not only allows for comfortable operation but also allows the tool to lock into a vise for stationary cutting. Another nice feature for those who maintain many of these units and are thinking about upgrading some of them, is that up to 80% of the parts are interchangeable. This means if you have brushings, pulleys or other parts they will work in the new & old models.

To properly introduce the new Milwaukee Band Saw 6232-6N Ohio Power Tool is giving away a brand new Milwaukee 4.5” rattail grinder 6122-30 ($119 sale price) with each band saw purchased however supply is extremely limited with 3 max per order. The grinders will be shipped with the units, no mail-in rebates to worry about. The Milwaukee 6232-2N is available now for pre-sale at $299 and should be in-store before Febuary 6th

Milwaukee Tool is serious about proving themselves in the metalworking tool category. Within the next month or so Milwaukee will also introduce several new 5”, 6”, 7” & 9” grinders to accompany the new 4.5” grinders available now. All the new Milwaukee metalworking grinders are intended to not only compete with the likes of Bosch, Makita and Metabo in this category but in fact become the preferred brand for users.

SDS vs. SDS Plus vs. SDS Max vs. Spline Drive

There is sometimes a little confusion as to what bits work with which tools and what the best bits to use with each job are. It is a little confusing, even for us who are constantly using these different acronyms. It was much simpler before when there was just SDS with smaller bits and Spline Drive for the larger heavy duty stuff. Later there was the introduction of the SDS-Plus which does work interchangeably with regular SDS bit and simply offered a stronger connection, so not much confusion there. Then however we got the SDS Max which is not compatible with anything else and is very similar to Spline Drive for strength and capacity.

If you are starting with an empty toolcrib I can tell you the trend for most manufacturers and buys is going towards the SDS Max over the Spline Drive. Although some people with existing bits and equipment are holding true to the Spline Drives so it would be hard to imagine either style going away anytime soon.

SDS & SDS Plus – Typically used with Carbide drill bits 5/32” – 1-1/8” and thin wall carbide core bits up to 4”. There are also several types of smaller chipping and chiseling bits that work extremely well with standard SDS Rotary Hammers. You will find the tools often give max capacity right in the title such as 1” SDS or 1-1/8” SDS. These are solid bit capacities so don’t go sticking a 1-1/8” bit on a ¾” SDS Rotary Hammer Drill, even though the bit will fit it is going to be under powered.

SDS Max - Typically used with Carbide drill bits 1/2” – 2” and thick wall carbide core bits up to 4” (thin wall up to 6”). There are also many chipping, chiseling, bushing, cutting and digging bits that work well with the SDS Max tools. Many of the demolition tools and large breakers will use the Hex shank but that is another topic for another day.

Spline Drive - Typically used with Carbide drill bits 1/2” – 2” and thick wall carbide core bits up to 4” (thin wall up to 6”). There are also many chipping, chiseling, bushing, cutting and digging bits that work well with the SDS Max tools. Most of the time the SDS Max & Spline drive tools are identical with simply different chuck retainers to distinguish the different models.

Adaptors – You can get adaptors to go from SDS Max to Spline or vise-versa or from either size down to the smaller SDS or SDS Plus sizes. It is obviously best to avoid unnecessary adaptors whenever possible, just another thing to loose, break, etc. I don’t think there are any adaptors available to go up from SDS to the larger sizes (SDS Max or Spline) and if there were such an adaptor it would be best not to use it.

SDS = SDS Plus
SDS Max = adaptor for SDS & SDS Plus, Adaptor for Spline
Spline = adaptor for SDS & SDS Plus, Adaptor for SDS Max

One point that probably causes the most confusion of the different style bits is the tool capacity rating in the titles. For instance a Bosch has a few SDS-Plus Bulldogs; one is a 7/8” SDS-Plus & the other is a 1” SDS-Plus. This inch rating refers to the drilling diameter capacity or basic power of the drill not a different size SDS-Plus shanks; all SDS-Plus shanks are the same.

Another point of confusion is there are two types of larger hammers produced by most manufacturers the demolition hammers as well as rotary drill hammers. The rotary drills can almost always be used as a drill and also switched to only hammer mode for using chisels. These are also sometimes called combination drills. The demolition hammers on the other hand only operate in hammer mode and can’t drill which means they are significantly cheaper. When shopping online sometimes the pictures might be the same, make sure you are getting the right unit.

If you have any questions at all about any SDS tools or accessories please call the experts at Ohio Power Tool 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com. In addition to knowledgeable sales staff they also are also running a winter/early spring special on all SDS, SDS Max & Spline Drive Carbide Hammer Drill Bits for 50% off list price. Stock up now and save considerably. Search Tools by Category: SDS & SDS Plus Hammer Drills, SDS Max Hammer Drills, Spline Drive Hammer Drills.

What's New from STAFDA 2008? - Construction Distribution

Recently I had the opportunity to work with Construction Distribution Magazine and report on some of the new products that were featured at the STAFDA trade show. In total there were 6 of us “Roving Reporters” and it was interesting to see the different products that were mentioned in the article. Some of the products highlighted in the article are: Milwaukee M12 Cordless Tools, Spyder Scraper, Recipro Tools, Ridgid MicroExplorer, Malco TurboShear FC, Bosch Laser Levels, Dremel Multi-Max, CP Hydraulic Power Pack, Wright University Online Courses, Bosch Laser Range Finder, Concrete Destroyer from DiTeq Diamond, Joy Jaw saw guards, Grill-N-Chill tailgate BBQ, Gear Keeper Tethered products, Bosch PS50 Multi-X and portable CO2 tank from JacPac.

New Milwaukee 4.5" Grinders for Metalworking

Milwaukee has recently introduced 7 new 4.5" grinders aimed at the metalworking grinder market. These new grinders will compete directly with other top names currently dominating metalworking grinders such as Bosch, Makita and Metabo.

Some of the new features that will make Milwaukee competitive include: Debris Baffles, basically an engineered L-shape intake vents protect the motor and other components by deflecting debris particles out of the airflow before entering the grinder. Another feature is the Multi-Port Exhaust vents on all four sides of the gear case allow more hot air to escape preventing motor burn-up, others typically have only 2. Also Milwaukee uses a 25% Longer Lasting Epoxy Coating to increase tool life by preventing debris from damaging copper wires in the motor.

Some of the connivance and safety features include: Tool Free Adjustable Guard allowing the user to quickly adjust the guard without the use of a tool. Burst Resistant Guard Positive detents lock the guard in place so if a wheel burst, the guard is more secure and less likely to rotate. Finally the Soft Grip 3-Position Side Handle provides optimal control for any application.  Top position is ideal for cutting.

The reason there are 7 models is because for each version there are locking and non-locking triggers, for compliance reasons. Ohio Power Tool sells all 7 models call 800-242-4424 if you need any help determining which would be right for you.

Models Include: 6122-30 10AMP Rat Tail w/Lock, 6122-31 10AMP Rat Tail no Lock, 6148-30 10AMP Paddle w/Lock, 6148-31 10AMP Paddle no Lock, 6148-33 10AMP Slide Trigger w/lock, 6140-30 7.5AMP Paddle w/Lock, 6140-33 7AMP Slide Trigger w/lock

18 Volt Lithium Hammer Drills – Milwaukee M18 vs. Bosch

Recently both Bosch and Milwaukee came out with new 18 volt lithium ion tools. Milwaukee Tools first 18v lithium line was one of the first to market with the V18 tools however after these tools were release other brands had a chance to copy their designs. Bosch Tools on the other hand stuck with the 18v NiCd tools and focused on thier 10.8v and 36v lithium tools. Both these new lines of 18v tools put them head and shoulders above the competition but which of the two is on top?

Today we are just looking at the 18v Cordless Hammer Drills, in this comparison specifically the Milwaukee M18 2611-24 and the Bosch 17618-01. Each product was laboratory tested against the other competition available at the time (a few months ago) so both tools are making the same claims of best in class torque, battery life and construction. Unfortunately I don’t have a lab in the back to redo all these tests comparing the two against each other but hopefully I can provide a little more insight.

Both units have 650 in/lbs torque (above any other brand on the market) although the Bosch unit has 2050 RPM rating vs. Milwaukee at 1700 RPM. Both units also have free battery mail-in rebate offers until the end of the year however Milwaukee is giving away the larger XC battery while Bosch is giving away their smaller Slim Pack battery. Both have a two battery system but on the M18 tools the smaller battery will not fit on the hammer drill or saws. On price, overall the Bosch 17618-01 is cheaper at $305 while the Milwaukee 2611-24 is $349. Milwaukee is including a free impact driver 2650-20 ($179) with the hammer drill, for a limited time, so big points there. Warranties are also pretty similar with 2 year battery replacement on each.

In size comparison the Milwaukee is slightly smaller which you can see in the pictures. The weight for the M18 is also lighter at 5.55 lbs vs Bosch at 5.75. If weight is a big factor the Bosch can use the slim pack batteries which will reduce the weight below the Milwaukee but battery life will be half. Both units feature a LED light but Bosch has the light on the base which illuminates the work surface a little better.

The biggest problem I discovered in looking at these two drills side by side was with the Bosch. There is no power gauge on their batteries. I’m not sure why this was left off, perhaps it makes the battery smaller but it is an extremely useful feature I can’t believe was left off. Bosch has the feature on their 36v tools so I am really baffled why they would leave it off the 18v. The charger is a 30 minute charge which works with 14.4v as well but even the charger only gives a simple charging or full indication not a power level.

For my money I am buying the Milwaukee M18 with free Impact and mail-in rebate for a 3rd XC battery. The deal is right and I just can’t see not having a power gauge on my lithium ion tools. If you have 3 batteries and 1 charger how are you going to keep track of which battery has power and which doesn’t? I really like the Bosch as well, it still has more power and longer run time than any other competitor but when they are so close like that a free M18 Impact Driver will make all the difference.

Milwaukee M12 Hackzall & Copper Cutter - Videos

Recently we had several manufacturers visit Ohio Power Tool as part of the annual Tent Sale & Tool Expo. As you might assume this was a very interactive event and everyone had an opportunity to test out many of the new tools. Luckily it was terrific weather and all the vendors could set up tables and tent in the front parking lot. Below are a few short video clips of the new Milwaukee M12 tools that were on hand.

The M12 Copper Tubing Cutter - 2471-22 ($219)

This is a very innovative product and easy to use. There is a switch next to the trigger which locks the open end so you can put the tube in place. Once the copper tube is in the tool flip the switch and pull the trigger. The tool does have a slight tendency to want to pull itself down but with a firm grip it makes a very clean cut.

The M12 Hackzall – 2420-22 ($179)

The new Hackzall is a very cool new product for the Milwaukee M12 line. At first glance it looks simply like a Sawzall with a little less power but really it is much more. It can do a wide range of different job where you might use a jigsaw or Rotozip. At the same time it’s good for cutting wood, metal and PVC pipe as well. The video below is just one of the examples of a different type of application for the Hackzall where it is simulating cutting a hole for an electrical box in drywall.

Until the end of the year there is also an offer for a free M12 impact (tool only) with the purchase of selected other M12 tools. Both of these are included in the offer as well as the Micro Driver, Impact and M-Spector Camera.

Tent Sale & Tool Expo – October 22nd

For those of you that might be in or around Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday, October 22nd I would like to invite you to Ohio Power Tool for the Annual Tent Sale & Tool Expo. This year it’s a little later than usual so it would correspond with the launch of so many new lines of tools including: Milwaukee M12, Milwaukee M18, Bosch 12V Max, Bosch 18V Lithium, Ridgid Explorer & New Seesnakes, plus many other exciting product. All of these new tools will be at the show ready for you to demo, so if you want to try out the new Dremel Multi-Max or anything else come on down. Each vendor will be there in full force including the Bosch Big Blue Trailer. Milwaukee, Ingersoll Rand, Ridgid, Chicago Pneumatic, Hougen, Power Team and many others will have tents and tables set up as well. The event runs from 10:00am – 5:00pm or when people finally leave.

This is a great event for any one buying tools or just wanting to test out the new tools! Ohio Power Tool, already known for low internet competitive pricing, really blows it out for the tent sale. Lots of existing products are discounted for that day in addition to overall discounts given on all in-store orders. On top of the Ohio Power Tool discounts the vendors on hand have even more discounts in the form of promotions, instant rebates, free tools, tool trade-ins, etc. For instance, Bosch is offering $75 trade-in on any 18 volt, working or not, to upgrade to their new 18v lithium. That would put the new Bosch 18V compact drill at $129 and on top of that you would still get off an additional discount from Ohio Power Tool.

I’m sounding like a used car salesman now but it is definitely worth checking out if you want to get some really good deals on power tools or just get your hands on some of the new tools.

Milwaukee Tool M12 & M18 Launch Programs

We are continuing to be happily surprised with some of Milwaukee’s decisions for launching the new M12 & M18 tools. After launching several Pre-Launch kits which were really great deals and they have committed to start shipping these units next week, although none of us are going to have these in hand tomorrow waiting an extra few days still beats my initial expectations.

The whole deal has just been sweetened greatly, both the M12 & M18 tools receive extra bonus mail-in rebate for free stuff which is also good on all pre-orders that haven’t shipped yet.

Milwaukee M18 – Free XC Battery

View the M18 Mail-in Rebate for full details but basically any single tool kit or combo kit gets a free XC battery (48-11-1828). Models include Hammer Drill 2611-24 (already includes a free impact), ¼” Hex Impact 2650-22, Sawzall 2620-22, Circular Saw 2630-22, 2 Tool Combo 2690-22, 4 Tool Combo 2690-24 & 2691-20. These batteries are selling currently for $119 so it is a really good bonus.

Milwaukee M18 Compact Combo Kits – In-Stock

Milwaukee has now shipped the 2691-22 M18 Compact Combo Kit ($299) which includes the compact drill 2601 and the ¼” hex impact 2650. The kit also comes with 2 compact batteries, hard case and the M18 charger. The new M18 impact is a real winner for Milwaukee, it has the most power, longest run time, while still being one of the lightest in its class. The M18 tools are the second generation Lithium Ion from Milwaukee Tool and improve upon what was already one of the most popular 18 volt lithium tool lines in the business with the V18 tools. We can be pretty confident at this point the rest of the M18 Tools and Combo kits will be shipping by the October 1st launch.

Milwaukee M12 vs. Bosch 12V Max

I’m sure most people are fully aware of the new compact tools being launched by both Milwaukee and Bosch, and possibly tired of hearing about them. Apparently I can’t shut about it but there is a lot happening all at once after what seems like a long drought of no new tools. Obviously these tools have a huge potential for gifts around the holidays so it’s no wonder they delayed the launch until October just in time to get the word out and all the products on the shelves for holiday shopping season.

Finally I think we have the full picture of what tools are available for each of these lines at least until first quarter 2009. At this point I think it’s probably more important to look at the full lines vs. simply comparing tool for tool as we did previously with Bosch Pocket Driver vs. Milwaukee Micro Driver. When it comes down to it most people are probably going to assume the drivers, impacts and flashlights will work fairly similar with both lines. These will probably not drive the buying decisions but the two lines do have some different tools available that are very unique.

Milwaukee M12
Micro Driver 2401-22 - $132
Impact 2450-22 - $179
Flashlight 29-24-0145 – $19
M-Spector 2310-21 - $239
Copper Tube Cutter 2471-22 - $219
Hackzall 2420-22 - $179

Bosch 12 Volt Max
Pocket Driver PS20-2A - $132
i-Driver PS10-2A - $155
Impactor PS40-2A - $183
Flash Light FL11 - $39
3/8” Drill PS30-2A - $159
Multi-X PS50-2A- $199

They match up fairly evenly with 6 tools each but some big differences in what they do. In just looking at the unique tools Milwaukee has the M-Spector, Pipe Cutter & Hackzall while Bosch has the i-Drive, 3/8” Drill & Multi-X. My first reaction is that the Bosch products have more broad appeal, if we are talking about the regular user or DIY guy I think these might make more sense. The Milwaukee products however are focused on professionals and do a good job of using the small size to create great new supplemental tools for someone who already has an 18 volt drill and other tools. The ace in the hole for Bosch is really the Multi-X PS50, there has been a lot of buzz about this one. The tool has so many uses and really can do jobs no other tool can. If you are already committed to the Milwaukee M12 line you can always pick up the Dremel Multi-Max for $99 which can tackle the same basic jobs but it has also got a cord.

Milwaukee has some nice multiple tool kits which make a lot of sense as the tool only versions of most of these new tools will not be available until later (I am assuming after the end of the year) and how many batteries and chargers do you really need. Also I hate to discredit the Hackzall, I think this thing has a ton of use for everyone; it’s very powerful, incredibly easy to use, part jigsaw, part Rotozip, part Sawzall and very small. The 2490-22 kit with Micro Driver and Hackzall for $249 will be extremely popular for Pros and DIY guys alike.

It’s a very tough call. I don’t think the decision would be that easy for anyone. For plumbers, HVAC, electricians and other tradesman I would have to give an advantage to the Milwaukee M12 line for some of their specialty tools. For everyone else I think it’s going to be hard to pass up the PS50 Multi-X tool. This thing is going to be all over those “Top 10 Gifts for a Guy” lists this holiday.

Early Arrival on Milwaukee M12 Launch Kits

In very non-customary fashion some of the Milwaukee M12 tool kits have actually shipped well before the target October 1st launch date. After previous delays in receiving new products I think Milwaukee has final figured out the formula: under promise, over deliver. These two kits are the M12 launch specials and will only be available for a short time. Don’t be expecting these to be around after October anywhere.

The M-Spector kit 2310-21P features the two tools currently available but for $269 that is about $100 less than their individual price. It includes a case which fits both tools together, 2 batteries, charger, M-Spector & Micro Driver.

The M12 Impact Kit 2490-23 features 2 new tools the impact & flashlight as well as the Micro Driver currently available. The individual impact and flashlight will still not be available until the official October 1st launch but you can get them early with this kit. Price on this kit is $199 at Ohio Power Tool.

These two M12 Launch kit are available now but the other M12 tools and kits will not be available until October 1, and now I have a little more faith we will actually get them on time. The launch kits will again only be available for a very short time, my guess is these will all be gone very soon.

Milwaukee Big Hawg vs. Bosch Carbide Hole Saws

First things First, this is not an equal comparison of two identical products. Looks are deceiving with these new hole saws because while they look very similar they function very differently and are also priced very differently. The only reason we even are comparing the two products is because a lot of people that are looking at these as equal products. Hopefully this post will help highlight some of the similarities and differences of these two products.

The Milwaukee Big Hawg is primarily a wood hole saw. The pilot is a 3/8” spade like bit and the teeth are hardened steel. While an occasional nail will not damage the saw it is not intended for metal, concrete, fiber board or any other materials. The advantage over a bi-metal hole saw is that it is faster, longer lasting, much easier to get the wood core out as well as easier to sharpen. The advantage over self-feed bits it that they are much cleaner (far less shavings) and will last longer, up to 600 holes between sharpening.

The Bosch Carbide Hole Saw has a drill bit pilot and is made to go through a wide range of materials including: cinder block, metal, cement board, wood and many other materials. The tips are diamond ground carbide and extremely tough.

At first glance the Bosch Carbide looks like the superiors product and it is but the price tag is also double that of the Milwaukee Big Hawgs. Comparison price on a 2-1/8” hole saw: Bosch $55.40 vs. Milwaukee $26.32. While both Hole Saws made it through the wood test in almost identical times the Milwaukee would obviously be the smarter choice at half the price. However if you want a hole saw that is going to do more than cut wood do not buy the Big Hawg. We tested the Milwaukee on all the other materials in the video but basically ruined the pilot bit and damaged the saw by doing so.

Hopefully this post and video will help you determine the right hole saw for you. There are also many hole saw kits from Bosch and Milwaukee listed on OhioPowerTool.com.

Milwaukee M18 Tools – Making the Switch

There have been some discussions going on about the new M18 tools and why Milwaukee is coming out with a second 18 volt lithium ion line and what will happen to the current V18 line. There have also been some frustration that the batteries are not compatible between the two lines of tools. First let’s take a look at the current market for hammer drills including the new tools soon to be on the shelves in October.

Milwaukee M18 2611-24 – 1700 RPM – 650 in/lbs – 5.3 lbs - $329
Bosch 18V 17618-01 – 2050 RPM – 650 in/lbs – 5.? lbs - $342
Makita 18V BHP451 – 1700 RPM – 560 in/lbs – 5.1 lbs - $299
Dewalt 18V DEW 927 – 1800 RPM – 500 in/lbs – 5.5 lbs - $349
Milwaukee V18 0824-24 – 1700 RPM – 550 in/lbs – 6.2 lbs - $344

*M18 2611-24 comes with a free impact for all pre-orders from Ohio Power Tool

This is a very very rough overview because there are many other factors to consider such as tool size, battery life, etc which have all greatly improved as well with the new M18 tools. Milwaukee has built a reputation for building the best tools on the market and their target customers are professionals. The second generation of lithium ion was necessary for them to stay on top; obviously they need to beat Dewalt in everyway possible.

Why do the batteries not work with the current V18? I did get some technical answers part of which was that the new M series batteries have 5 connection points vs. 3 connections, with the V18, which allows for more power transfer etc needed for higher performance. In reality they probably could have made it work but do they build to work with previous tools or do they try to build the best tools possible? Obviously there is no money in making batteries that would essentially work with decade old NiCd tools. Maybe their problem is they make tools that last to long. They set expectations pretty high when they made the V18 batteries work with the NiCd tools, unfortunately this probably won’t be the norm. If you currently have V18 tools they will probably last you much longer, which is good unless you are like me and need to have the latest and greatest. Either way you will still be able to pick up new V18 tools from Ohio Power Tool for at least another year and batteries for probably the next 10 years.

¼” Hex Impact & Recip Saw comparisons with M18, V18, Makita & Dewalt:

Dewalt 18V DC827KL – 2700 IPM – 1330 in/lbs – 3.7 lbs - $359
Milwaukee V18 0881-22 – 3200 IPM – 1400 in/lbs – 5.2 lbs - $325

In-Depth Look: Milwaukee M12 Hackzall & Copper Cutter

Earlier this week we took a quick look at all the Milwaukee Tools launching in October which included several new M12 tools. In this post we will take a more in-depth look specifically at two of the new M12 tools, the Hackzall and Copper Tube Cutter. The whole M12 line is aimed at Tradesmen specifically plumbers, HVAC, electricians and remodelers. The tools are very lightweight and compact, perfect for working in confined spaces.

Overall I am very happy with their strategy and glad they found creative new product for professionals to use with the M12 battery system. My initial fear is that we would be hit with a bunch of cheap consumer products and that Milwaukee might lose focus on their professional customers. That is not the case with these tools at all.

M12 Copper Tube Cutter 2471-22

This is the first product of its kind and will directly compete with the Ridgid manual pipe cutters which have been very successful. The battery powered M12 unit should save a large amount of time for anyone that is continuously cutting copper pipe. On a ½” copper pipe the 2471-22 can make a cut in 3 seconds and do up to 200 cuts on a single charge. The same cut might take 20-30 seconds with a manual cutter. The tool also automatically adjusts to different sizes from 3/8” to 1” tube.

Of course when you talk about electric pipe cutting tools one of the first concerns might be working with pipes full of water and getting it wet. Certainly the tool is not waterproof so don’t take it in the bath tube with you but Milwaukee has make serious efforts to keep the unit’s electronics sealed as well as built the head with corrosion resistant metal.

M12 Hackzall 2420-22

This is not Milwaukee’s first effort to build a smaller cutting tool. Milwaukee had the NiCd 18V Hatchet which was a smaller version of the Sawzall that bent 90 degrees in the middle was very popular among plumbers. The Hatchet has since been phased out along with the rest of the NiCd tools but the idea or a compact reciprocating saw is very much alive in the new Hackzall. The Hackzall however goes way beyond a compact Sawzall. The smaller size and new tool configuration are not only intended to make regular cuts but also to use for detail work of a Rotozip or jigsaw. The small unit has 0-3000 SPM and can cut wood, drywall, PVC, fiberglass, plastic and ever galvanized pipe.

The Hackzall can use any Sawzall blade but will also accept New Hackzall Blades specifically made for the unit. The new blades are smaller 3.5”-6” and include scroll saw blades and other blades specifically made for the Hackzall. The unit also features similar preventative measures to keep water out of the internal parts of the tools when using on pipes that may have recently been in use.

Largest Product Launch Ever for Milwaukee Power Tools

In October Milwaukee Power Tool will launch its largest release of new products ever. The 2 lines of products currently exist but this will greatly expand on both of these lines and truly give them a foothold into several new markets. The new products will be part of the new M12 (12 volt) & M18 (18 volt) tool lines.

The Milwaukee M12 tool line currently features the Micro Driver 2401-22 and M-Spector Camera 2310-21. Soon to be released (October 1st - target date) are an Impact Driver 2450-22, Copper Cutter 2471-22, Flashlight & Hackzall 2420-22. These new tools will be very popular among plumbing and HVAC contractors. The copper tube cutter especially will be a huge time saver and can handle 3/8” to 1” copper tube. The Hackzall is ideal for cutting pvc tubes or putting boxes in drywall and plywood. It will be a handy tool to have but will not replace your Sawzall for all jobs. You can find a few extremely well priced M12 combo kits available on Ohio Power Tool which will be available in very limited quantities to promote the new tool launch.

The Milwaukee M18 line expands on the current battery system used by the compact 18 volt model 2601-22. The 2601 however has a slim battery which is light weight but not powerful enough to use with the new hammer drill 2611-24, Sawzall 2620-22 or circular saws 2630-22. A new larger M18 battery will work with all the tools and will be called the XC battery. The new M18 line features a light weight hex impact that outperforms the competition in speed, torque and run time available with compact batteries 2650-21 or XC batteries 2650-22. The new line will also add additional tools in the following months such as a grinder, jigsaw as well as other new tools. The new M18 will eventually replace the current line of V18 tools as the only Milwaukee 18 volt tools but that will not happen until some time in 2009 and the batteries and accessories will of course be available for at least 5-10 more years.

All the new M12 & M18 tools are available now for Pre-Sale from Ohio Power Tool. The Pre-Sales will be fulfilled in the order they are received so if you want to be the first kid on the block with the new tools you should probably make a pre-order ASAP. On the other hand if you are looking for a great deal on great tools you can get a V18 4 tool combo 0920-29 for $426.36 or a V18 Hammer Drill & Hex Impact 0824-24 for $299.

Look for several in-depth tool reviews and more information on the M12 & M18 tools over the next week.

Electric Cars Run Off Lithium Power Tool Batteries

It seems more and more people are getting excited about electric cars these days. With cars like the new Tesla Sports Car which does 0-60 in 3.9 and can drive 220 miles on each charge I’m pretty excited about the idea myself… although the 6 figure price tag slows that excitement down pretty quick. How far away are we from plug-in cars that are affordable and priced reasonable? Are the “evil” oil companies really buying up all the new technology, slowing the progress, so they can keep oil above $4 gallon? I don’t know and after watching too many movies I partly believe men in black suits are out there and might find me “expendable” if I start theorizing about that. I will tell you there are many people, tired of waiting for Toyota or GM to figure it out, are building their own electric cars and motorcycles. All over the country people have formed Electric Car Clubs while others share their projects on websites like Instructables or make their own sites like www.driveev.com.

Coptool.com probably isn’t the first stop for most people when they are planning their great EV build. We do however get many questions about the Monster Garage episode which ran a few years ago where Jesse James and the guest crew turned a 1962 Chevy Bel Air into an electric car drag racer which ran solely off Milwaukee V28 Lithium Ion Batteries. Unfortunately there is no footage from that show on youtube. Here is Milwaukee’s short clip of the show (If anyone knows where the full show can be watched online let us all know). Some quick math on the cost; 384 V28 Batteries at $150 each from Ohio Power Tool = $57,600 for the batteries alone but I’m sure you can get a volume discount if you call.

This type of build might be out of your price range but there are dozen’s of applications power tool batteries do prove very useful. The Milwaukee V28 ($150) and Bosch 36 volt ($142.50) are good candidates, also there is a Milwaukee V18 kit with 2 batteries and charger for $179.

For more info on the Milwaukee V28 Bel Air here is another good blog post with some details on the systems including pictures from Brian the “Power Tool Geek” View Post Here. Also the original Milwaukee Tool Press Release can be read in full below.

02/03/2006 - Milwaukee Press Release

Jesse James and the Monster Garage re-power a 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air with Milwaukee V28™ Lithium-Ion batteries!

Milwaukee’s V28™ lithium-ion batteries are getting noticed in more than one way at recent trade shows. Contractors and builders from across the nation checked out Monster Garage’s latest mechanical marvel, a 1962 Chevy Bel Air that has been re-powered to run off of 384 V28™ lithium-ion batteries.

The car made its first public appearance at the International Builders’ Show held recently in Orlando and will be featured on the cable TV show, Monster Garage on Monday, April 10, 2006. (Show airs on The Discovery Channel at 9:00 PM Mondays, Eastern Time)

The car was designed and re-built in five days by cable TV’s car-star Jesse James and his crew at his Monster Garage in Long Beach, California. It did standing quarter-mile runs in 14.533 seconds at 93.3 miles an hour, says Jon Zick, Milwaukee’s chief engineer of new concepts. With racing tires, he says the Milwaukee-red, cool-looking car could do the quarter mile at over 100 MPH!

The batteries in the car were connected in series to produce about 336 volts at 3,000 amps. The batteries drive twin electric forklift motors.

In every day life, the batteries drive Milwaukee’s new line of V28™ cordless tools that includes a portable band saw, impact wrench, Sawzall® reciprocating saw, circular saw and hammer-drill. V28™ users can expect up to 40-50% more power and up to twice the run time when compared with 18-volt NiCd batteries.

Milwaukee will introduce a V18™ 18-volt Li-ion tool system later this summer that will retrofit on existing Milwaukee 18-volt NiCd cordless tools.

Milwaukee Sawzall Wins the Showdown Every Time

57 years ago Milwaukee invented the reciprocating saw so it is no surprise they still have the best tool in the game. The Milwaukee Sawzall has been copied by almost every competitor out there and although there are some other good tools, Milwaukee is still numero uno.

Popular Mechanic conducted the comparison below a few months ago which I though did a pretty good job creating real testing subjects with multiple materials. The two tests were named the “Nail Biter” and “PM House Sandwich”

The Nail Biter - Two 2 x 4 pieces hammered together with an entire box of 16d common nails.

PM House Sandwich – Smashed together 1/2-in. drywall, 2 x 6 lumber, 1 x 4 lumber, 1 1/4-in. PVC pipe, steel conduit, two 12-ga. cables, two pieces steel strapping, insulation.

Milwaukee 15 Amp Super Sawzall | $187.50, OhioPowerTool.com
Blade Damage: A /// Smoothness: A- /// Power: A- /// Overall: A-

The Nail Biter: Two pieces of wood and a whole pile of nails were no match for our winner—it took just 6 seconds to slice through the 2 x 4s with a remarkably smooth and straight cut.

PM House Sandwich: The Milwaukee ripped through all 10 layers in just 14 seconds. The almost-pristine blade that emerged impressed our team of testers.

Craftsman Professional 12 Amp Variable Speed | $110, craftsman.com
Blade Damage: A- /// Smoothness: B+ /// Power: B /// Overall: B+

The Nail Biter: In the showdown's biggest surprise, a Craftsman bested a DeWalt saw across the board for the first time in recent PM history. Slicing the wood took just 8 seconds.

PM House Sandwich: Again, the Craftsman proved to be a pleasant surprise, carving through our sandwich in just 16 seconds with hardly more effort than the champion Milwaukee needed.

DeWalt DW311K Heavy-Duty 13 Amp | $170, dewalt.com
Blade Damage: B- /// Smoothness: B /// Power: B /// Overall: B

The Nail Biter: Cutting the lumber took 11 seconds—and required a fair amount of force to push the blade through the boards.

PM House Sandwich: The DeWalt split our sandwich in 23 seconds, and required far more muscle. The blade sustained about three times as much damage as the Milwaukee's.

Black & Decker Firestorm 9.5 Amp | $80, blackanddecker.com
Blade Damage: C- /// Smoothness: D+ /// Power: C- /// Overall: C-

The Nail Biter: Our least expensive tool barely cut it, taking 25 seconds to complete the task—more than twice as long as the second slowest finisher—and requiring an enormous amount of effort.

PM House Sandwich: This saw is simply not powerful enough for most demolition jobs. It finished slicing in 29 seconds, but the rickety feel left our hands sore, and the blade was rendered unusable.

Test Results from Popular Mechanic

No Surprise that the Milwaukee Super Sawzall took the prize. I wish these tests could be done over and over to see which tool lasts the longest and I’m sure the Milwaukee would stand completely alone on top.

The tools themselves are obviously the most important consideration to overall performance but do not overlook the importance of blades and accessories. See the Ice Hardened Sawzall Blade Comparison Video. These were both done using the same Sawzall, so keep that in mind next time you buy blades.

At Ohio Power Tool the primary focus is professionals that rely on their tools everyday to make a living. In an effort to provide the best deal, on the best tools with the best accessories the Milwaukee 15amp Super Sawzall 6538-21 is on sale for $187.50 (currently lower than any big box or well known internet retailers). In addition to simply providing a great price the deal also includes a free 14 Piece Ice Hardened Blade Kit 49-22-1131 ($29.98) which features six 9” Torch Blades.

Getting More Out of Your New Compact Power Tools

It’s no secret there has been some very big success in the Pocket/Micro tool market. It started with the Bosch 10.8v tools, then the Milwaukee 12v (newly named the M12 tools) and now almost every tools company has some form of these compact lithium ion tools. One of the common complaints for most of these tools is that they don’t have a standard chuck but instead a ¼” hex. This means you can’t use standard drill bits for pilots or any other form of drilling and if you need to carry two tools around that pretty much defeats the purpose. Obviously if you are going to do some serious drilling you may want to look at a slightly larger tool. Perhaps something like the new Milwaukee compact 18V Lithium 2601-22 ($199), still lightweight just over 3.5 lbs but it is built for heavy use. That being said you should still be able to do some occasional drilling and detail work with the 10.8v and 12v tool.

The internet is an amazing place to shop, compare and learn about products but I do feel there is something that maybe hasn’t been completely figured out when it comes to recommendations and accessories the way you get when you come into a store, hold the tools and talk to the guys behind the counter. A great instance of this is with the Milwaukee 38 Piece Quik-Lok 48-32-1500 set which sells incredibly well with any brand of the Micro & Pocket Drivers in the store because it just makes sense. The kit comes with 7 different sized ¼” hex drill bits, ¼” & 3/8” square socket adapters, Quik-Loc connectors and all sorts of different size driver bits. This is way more than just another driver bits which you already have but some however that gets lost online. With so much “upselling” going on it’s really hard to tell if this is really a recommendation from someone who know what they are talking about or simple a computer program matching compatible accessories, trying to add a few extra bucks on the sale.

Milwaukee 2301-21 M-Spector vs. Ridgid 25643 Seesnake Micro

Milwaukee recently announced the introduction of their 2 new inspection cameras the 2301-21 and 2300-20. We had a chance recently to get our hands on the M-Spector 2301-21 and compare it with the Ridgid Seesnake Micro. Here are some of my comparisons.

The basic feel of the M-Spector is that’s actually a little larger than I previously though. The handle is thicker than the Seesnake Micro and the vertical design makes it much taller than the Micro. The thumb locations do make it much easier to change light settings and the new digital zoom feature is an advantage over the Micro. The screen sizes are the same but the Milwaukee has better resolution at 320x240 vs. 234x160 with the Micro. The case for the Milwaukee 2301-21 is the typical red hard plastic case Milwaukee makes for each product. The case is also very large because it houses the charger and battery as well. The Ridgid case is a much smaller cloth case with foam lining.

In terms of performance I felt both did a very similar job actually viewing items. I couldn’t see any difference in light strength. One problem I still have with both cameras is there is no way to change orientation of the camera so the image is constantly sideways or upside down. I did see on the Milwaukee M-Spector that it says it only allows a 9’ reach with extensions (which is only 2 extensions). The Ridgid allows up to 9 extensions for a total of 30’. The Milwaukee is digital so in theory it should be able to handle many more than 2 extensions without image loss but there is no way to test it until it comes out. I was also told the 3’ extensions are not interchangeable between Ridgid and Milwaukee. The Ridgid Seesnake, unlike the Milwaukee, does come with 3 attachments (mirror, magnet and hook) which are good for pulling wires, picking up items, etc. The final big advantage for the Milwaukee is that it works with existing 12 volt lithium ion system that includes the 2401-22 Micro Driver and many more tools to come.

Overall I think it’s a pretty even match. The Milwaukee 2301-21 is $20 more than the Seesnake but you can use the battery with your other Milwaukee tools. I think the deciding factor for me would be if I were also going to put a 2401-22 Micro Driver in the tool box than I am going with the Milwaukee. The 2300-20 (M-Spector that comes out in Aug-Sept) works off regular batteries like the Ridgid Micro and in that case I would stick with the Seesnake Micro.

You can *PRE-ORDER* the Milwaukee 2301-21 M-Spector at Ohio Power Tool for $239.99. The pre-order means you will receive the product when we receive it. There is no promised date (because these are often delayed) but the credit card or paypal will not be fully processed until the product is ready to ship, so the pre-order is similar to a reservation.

Milwaukee Seesnake Micro Killer

It’s no secret Milwaukee has been planning to come out with a similar product to the Ridgid Seesnake Micro. We mentioned this back when we did the Subcompact face off between Milwaukee 12v vs Bosch 10.8v. The target market should be a little different for these and I believe the new generation of Ridgid Seesnake Micro may focus a little more on plumbers where they have the strongest following. The new 9.5mm Ridgid camera heads available later this month are specifically designed with plumbers in mind. The Milwaukee model will find more broad appeal and working with the same batteries as the 12 volt subcompact tools is a huge advantage, as they will be adding more tools to this line. I like the added features of zoom and high resolution but it’s hard to believe there is not a model capable of taking some still shot images. Read the full Milwaukee press release below.

Top Deals: Milwaukee Titan Work Cart $175

The Titan Milwaukee Work Carts came out well over a year ago and has served many of us very well. Around the internet you will see these selling for $300-600+ depending on the model. Both carts have a lockable drawer and work with the same add-on accessories. Milwaukee made an entire site to showcase how these carts can be configured and videos to show how well these carts are built.
See the Milwaukee Titan Site.

Ohio Power Tool is selling the 48-60-5010 cart for $175.00, which I can’t find anything for even double that on any site across the internet. Selecting the Right Magnetic Drill Press

There are a small number of people that use a mag drill on a daily basis and you are well aware if you are one of them. These tools are becoming more popular for much more than just working on I-beams. If you are considering a mag drill or an upgrade there are several important things to consider.

Hougen and Milwaukee are probably the two best known and most reliable makers of mag drills. Magnetic drills vary greatly in their size, weight, height, depth of cut (d.o.c.), amp power, RPMs and several other features. Hougen makes the smallest mag drills available, HMD115 & HMD150, which have an extremely low profile. The small sizes makes these incredibly useful for working in tight spaces such as with automotive and trucking applications.

One of the most popular mag drills and a real work horse is the Hougen HMD 904. This model is light weight at 27.5 lbs, powerful with 450 RPM and d.o.c. of 2”. It has a height of 16” and easy to work with if not in a tight spot. This model is also available as the HMD904S which features a swivel base. The swivel base allows you to get the drill close to the hole and then do a more precise line up with the tool in position. This is an especially huge advantage when using a mag drill in the horizontal or overhead position.

For more heavy duty applications consider the Hougen HMD925 with Powerfeed or the HMD505 that has a d.o.c. of 3” and 2 RPM speed options. The Milwaukee mag drills on OhioPowerTool.com are larger machines ranging from 57-72 lbs. heavier than any of the Hougen drills available although they do have some good features. These Milwaukee units feature adjustable bases for lining up your hole exactly. Also the Milwaukee drills feature keyed chucks which can use regular drill bits, hole saws or the Milwaukee Steel Hawg Cutters up to 6”. Milwaukee does have a smaller Hougen style mag drill 4270-20 but there are many reasons why the Hougen outperforms it. Please comment if you disagree, this will probably be a future article.

When considering drilling into solid metal the drill bit itself is a large considerations. Hougen features several varieties of Rotabroach Annular Cutters engineered to be one of the best metal cutters on the market. The Rotabroach cutters will work with other mag drills but will not work with chuck type mag drills. The smaller Hougen drills use different cutters all together which are more compact the Rotaloc (HMD115) and Rotaloc Plus (HMD150). If you are looking for cutters that work with a 3/8" chuck, the Milwaukee Steel Hawg Cutters work with traditional chucks and range in size from 7/8” to 6”. For cutting thin metal, such as sheet metal, Hougen makes several kits (RotaCut & Holcutter) which work in a traditional chuck style hand drills.

Deciding which type of mag drill and cutters you will need is not an easy decision and not something you can determine easily by reading a quick blog post. I would recommend calling the professionals at Ohio Power Tool (800-242-4424) if you have any questions.

Great Deals on NiCd Tools and Only Getting Better

As everyone moves over to lithium ion tools we are seeing some really great deals on the NiCd tools. The manufacturers are producing more and more lithium ion which is great because it drives the prices down. On the other hand the manufactures still have warehouses full of NiCd tools they want to get out the door. What does that mean for us consumers? Great prices! At Ohio Power Tool you can buy a Milwaukee 14.4V NiCd combo kit with Drill/Driver, flashlight, 2 batteries, charger and case for $137.60. These kits retailed a very short time ago for $326.00 and they flew off the shelves. These are great tools from Milwaukee, one of the best manufacturers of Power Tools. Like everything we sell these tools are brand new (no refurbished tools ever) and they have the full 5 year warrants. We have hundreds of customers out there with NiCd tools, rest assured we will be servicing and provide parts for all the NiCd we sell for at least another 5-10 years.

V28 and V18 tools are clearly the future and nobody is fighting that. If you want a V18 Drill/Driver the prices are coming down on those as well (just not as fast) V18 Drill/Driver & Impact Kit for $299.00. If you currently have an 18 volt NiCd Milwaukee system you can easily upgrade to lithium ion with this kit: V18 2 batteries & charger 48-11-1833

Of course everyone wants the latest and greatest tools; you wouldn’t be reading a blog about power tools if you didn’t take some pride in your arsenal. For $137.60 there is no shame in adding a few brand new Milwaukee tools to your line up. These things will more than pay for themselves over the many years you will be using them. Call Ohio Power Tool at 800-242-4424 if you have any questions about selecting the right Milwaukee tools.

Milwaukee 4201-22 vs. Bosch PS20-2 - Part 2

In a recent post we briefly compared the Bosch 10.8V Pocket Driver PS20-2 and the Milwaukee 12V Micro Driver 2401-22. At the time we had not receive the Milwaukee 12V tools so it was more of an on paper comparison. Now that a few months have past and we have some customers using them it is time to take another look.

I would like to start off by saying both these tool lines have been incredibly successful and I really feel these are professional tools that just happen to be very small. The Sub Compact Tool category has a very legitimate place in many professional tool boxes. An estimated 80-90% of our customers are professionals who come to us for their tools and repairs and we wouldn’t sell any products we don’t stand behind.

The Bosch PS20-2 claims to be able to drive 100 3” screws on a single charge and I though a good comparison would be to see if that was true and then see if the Milwaukee 2401-22 could match it… then though about screwing in 200 3” screws and decided against that particular comparison.

On paper it looks like the Milwaukee Micro Driver has a serious advantage over the Bosch Pocket Driver.

Milwaukee 2401-22 Micro Driver   –   12 Volt   –   120 ft lb

Bosch PS20-2 Pocket Driver   -   10.8 Volt   -   80 ft lb

Some interesting information on the PS20-2, the rating is actually on their “average power” not the “initial power”. The claim from Bosch is that their starting power rating is actually above 12 Volts and the initial ft lb torque is also higher, presumably around 120 ft lb like the Milwaukee 2401-22. The entire line of 10.8V Bosch tools will actually get a name change to “Bosch 12 Volt Max” at some point in the near future. This explanation leads me to believe their will be no real changes to the components only the name will change to reflect their “Max” power rating. This information is from Bosch so you should consider the source; Milwaukee probably has a completely different view on comparing the two products.

If this is the case essentially these two tools are even more similar than they appear. When you look at the batteries they look almost identical in shape and size. It is not hard to believe the power output would be very similar as well. The chargers and cases are also very similar as you can see in the picture below. I did test these both out on a few screws and from that basic test I couldn’t feel any real difference in power although I wasn’t exactly testing the limits.

Currently Bosch has 4 tools in their line-up while Milwaukee only has the 1 but both companies are planning to have 20-30 tools out for each line in the next year or two. It will be very interesting to see what new tools we will see in the sub compact tool market. Milwaukee for instance has plans to create a product that will compete with the Ridgid Seesnake Micro 25643 so we are going to see all sorts of new tools outside traditional saws, drivers and drills. This makes the comparison much more difficult because you always want to choose the line that will have the most versatility using the same battery system.

Bosch does currently have a special for a free ESPN fleece with all 10.8v purchases until April 11th if that might effect your buying decision.

So who wins the ultra compact driver comparison between the Bosch vs. Milwaukee? I personally would have to give a slight advantage to the Milwaukee 2401-22 and this is under the assumption the power output and torque are more similar than the numbers say, which I can believe. The Milwaukee had a few features over the Bosch that makes it stand out. First, the quick bit-loading 1/4” hex chuck is really nice and easier to use than the Bosch. Second the Milwaukee has a battery gauge, where the Bosch doesn’t. Finally the Milwaukee 12V Driver just looks cooler. Now the Milwaukee did come out 6 months later so they had time to really make more improvements. Both tools have build in light, weight about the same and feel very similar in hand. What would really make the decision much easier is if I knew what 20+ products were going to be added to each company’s line up. These are just the drivers; I can’t wait to see how competitive this gets in the next year.

If you have any opinions about either of these tools or any other sub compact tools feel free to post a comment.

New Tool - Milwaukee V28 Right Angle Grinder 0725-21

We love to see Milwaukee adding more tools to the V28 Line. Earlier this week we had mentioned the Cordless V28 toolbox Vacuum which just came out as well. The great part about the V28 system is that it actually has the power to run tools like an angle grinder. It seems like there are a lot of other tool brands that will make tools that are for all intensive purposes useless but the idea is cool. If you start loosing power within the first minutes of use, should they really even be making the tool. The V28 on the other hand has the power to get the job done when an outlet isn’t around. Will a single charge run all day…no of course not but with a extra battery alternating on the charger (and a 5000 charge V28 guarantee) you should be able to get some serious grinding done.

V28 Grinder / Cut-off Kit 0725-21 (includes battery & charger) - $348.21
V28 Grinder / Cut-off Tool Only 0725-20 - $199.20

  • V28 Motor delivers 8,000 RPM for fast cutting and grinding
  • V28 Li-Ion Battery 75 Cuts of 1/2" Threaded Rod.
  • Fuel Gauge indicates remaining run time.
  • Overload Protection prevents overheating and extends tool life.
  • Soft start reduces start-up torque and improves gear life.
  • Slide on switch reduces user fatigue
  • Spindle: 5/8" - 11

Milwaukee Portable Wet/Dry Vacuums

Milwaukee tool has developed two portable tool box style wet/dry vacuums, 0880-20 (V18) & 0780-20 (V28). These vacuums are battery operated using the V28 and V18 series lithium ion batteries. Suction is 20% higher than the competition with 40% higher air flow. Battery life is 11 minutes with V18 and 16 minutes with V28 for continuous operation. The 1-1/4” hose and accessories are housed on board the vacuum. Total capacity is 2 gallons in this compact, stackable design. Both models are priced at $97.20 at Ohio Power Tool.

This is a great design for all sorts of technicians and service professionals. It works with existing cordless tools and along with the Milwaukee name it’s backed by a 5 year warranty. If you don’t already have batteries and a charger you can pick up a 48-11-1833 kit for $179 which includes 2 V18 batteries and a universal charger (charges 18v, V18 & V28). Let us know what you think.

Milwaukee Portable Generators - New Products

Milwaukee Generators

Milwaukee Tool, just last week introduced a new line of heavy-duty, gas-powered generators which are very powerful, durability and built for performance in the professional trades. There are 4 new generators in the line 4,300-watt (model 4943-24), 5,000-watt (model 4950-20), 6,000-watt (4960-24) and 7,000-watt (4970-24). How do we know these generators are going to be any good? We know these are top of the line generators because Milwaukee has teamed up with Honda and Briggs & Stratton the two top generator engine makers to incorporate the most successful power plants available on the market today.

All 4 of these generators are built with heavy jobsite use in mind. All feature a 7.5 gallon gas tank, overhead valve (OHV) design, precisely machined components, electronic ignition, low oil alert systems and super-quiet mufflers that ensure easy starting and reliable performance. A premium brushed alternator features Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), ensuring reliable constant voltage output, and Full-Time, Max Power, which delivers full power to all 120-volt or 240-volt circuits and reduces the risk of equipment or generator damage.

Additional features include an impact-resistant stainless steel control panel with an optimal mix of seven 120-volt and/or 240-volt duplex and Twist-Locking power receptacles. An automatic engine idle control reduces fuel consumption and noise when in stand-by mode. Models also feature a durable 1¼” diameter, steel roll-cage frame, rugged, 12” all-terrain, non-flat tires for easy transport. To protect the generator from the inevitable downpour, our circuit breakers and panel switches are 100% sealed and all receptacles are

Holiday Gift Ideas Part 1 - Cordless Power Tools

This holiday season give the gift that keeps on giving, Power Tools. When it comes to power tools the most popular gifts and probably the most fun are cordless power tools. Cordless power tools are however a tricky gift to give. Many people are very loyal to their favorite line of tools (i.e. Bosch, Milwaukee, etc) and it’s not always the cheapest option on the list. Also there are a lot of discount cordless tools you can pick up next to the checkout at any big box home improvement store which aren’t even worth the plastic they are made of. Seriously be careful some cheap cordless saws can only make 3-5 full powered cuts on a charge? Who know why they even make these things other than to trick uninformed buyers. You would be much better off giving a nice quality corded model that will last for years. Power Tools are not like that store brand cereal that’s almost the same as your Lucky Charms you can buy for half the price.

Cordless drills are a safer bet as they normally hold a charge a little longer, but again don’t go cheap. There are several models of compact cordless drills that are relatively inexpensive, are very compact (i.e. Bosch Pocket Driver or Milwaukee Micro Driver)and hold a charge much longer than the discount brands. If you want to give a quality cordless tool gift at a low price this would be the way to go. If you have a little larger budget there are great deals on multiple tools and combo kits.

Recommended Cordless Lines to look at: Milwaukee V18, Milwaukee V28, Bosch Litheon & Ingersoll Rand IQV

Top 7 New Power Tools of 2007

Below are the top 7 new tools of the year. Obviously everyone will have their own opinions but this is an overall composition of our opinions with customer reviews and insight.

1. Ridgid SeeSnake Micro – The SeeSnake Micro is not like any other tool you have in your garage. It’s a 3 foot long waterproof snaking camera with a light on the end. With it you can look into walls, ducts, heating & cooling units, engines, pipes, drains and any other confined space. Additional 3 foot extensions are also available. It would be nice if in the future you could take some kind of picture with this but that’s about my biggest complaint. This is a very handy tool and has a wide variety of uses. More than anything it is really just lots of fun to play with.

2. Bosch Breaker 11335K – The 11335K Breaker Hammer is the newest Bosch electric demolition tool. This is a great addition to the existing arsenal of SDS-Max hammer drills & Bosch Brute tools. At only 35 lbs. this jack hammer is very versatile with vertical, angled or horizontal positioning. I had to make this one of the top tools of the year because who doesn’t feel like a bad ass using a jack hammer horizontally? Like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall.

3. IR Mini Air Tools – Ok so this is really a whole line of air tools but I was having trouble picking just one of these new Ingersoll Rand tools and they are pretty cheap so buying the whole line is still very reasonable. These are great tools all around, perfect for home user or professionals looking for compact tools to fit into those hard to reach places. Mini Grinder - Mini Drill/Driver - Mini Sander - Mini Polisher

4. Milwaukee V18 Battery – How can a Battery be one of the top new tools for 2007? It is because the V18 Lithium Ion battery works with all your previous Milwaukee 18 volt Ni-Cad tools. If you already have several 18 volt tools or a combo kit you can upgrade to Lithium Ion for $179 (see previous article). Additionally the charger still charges your old batteries so you can use them as back ups.

5. IQv Cordless Impact – Ingersoll Rand’s new line of IQv cordless tools is pretty impressive. Everyone knows IR as the trusted name for air tools and especially impact wrenches but not necessarily electric or cordless tools. The IQv line really had some big shoes to fill and I think they did an excellent job. You have a wide selection of IQv impacts powered by Lithium or NiCd in either 14.4V or 19.2V. The IQv line also includes other tools common to IR users such as grinders, drills and ratchets which can use the same batteries and chargers.

6. Bosch 36V Circular Saw 1671K – Obviously everyone has seem a cordless circular saw before so why would I include the 1671K? Simply put this is the first cordless circular saw I would actually want to bring to a job site. In my mind cordless circular saws are still not an alternative to a good corded saw because saws need lots of juice. Previous cordless saws were good for 4-5 cuts which is a joke if you are building anything larger than a door stop. The 36 volt Bosch is good for at least 20 which if you have a few extra batteries and a good corded miter saw or portable table saw should be extremely useful on any jobsite. Around the house with an extra battery the 1671K by itself would get most jobs done without any down time.

7. Milwaukee 12V Micro Driver – There seems to be a theme here with the micro & mini tools. Everything gets smaller but at the same time more powerful and the 2401-22 is no exception. It’s not a secret Milwaukee created the Micro driver to compete directly with the very successful Bosch PS20-2 & PS40-2 (I’m sure we’ll see a micro impact shortly) and with good reason. The Lithium Ion tools have added seriously power and battery life making it possible to have small tools that can do big jobs. Plus I think this thing just looks cool.
