2 Days with a Milwaukee M12 Thermal Imaging Camera 2260-21

We recently had a few days with this thermal imaging camera and learned a fair amount about its functionality and our own home in the process. We originally got to see the unit at Milwaukee’s headquarters (see original post here). Given a little more time with it the Milwaukee M12 2260-21 ($2500, Ohio Power Tool) really is an amazing piece of technology you need to get your hands on.

Ridgid Manual/Hydraulic Pipe Benders - Easy & Precise

If you are looking for a very precise way to bend up to 3” steel and stainless steel pipe these new manual pump, hydraulic benders may be interesting for you as they bend and measure at the same time. The manual pump also makes these units competitively priced and provide excellent control. The model HB382 ($1019, Ohio Power Tool) can handle up to 2” pipe and weights about 160 lbs. The model HB383 ($1790, Ohio Power Tool) will handle up to 3” but hits the scales at nearly 400 lbs making it a little tougher to just throw in the back of the truck. Read more information on these units for the official Ridgid press release below.

Would You like Your 12V Hackzall in Red or Blue?

Yes we did cover this a few weeks ago in a post announcing the new Bosch PS60-2A reciprocating saw. But thought we would share a few pictures now that both items are actually on the shelf so you could see just how close the Bosch is to the Milwaukee 2420-21 ($129, Ohio Power Tool). Please don’t get us wrong we really think both of these tools are awesome for their respective 12V lines, we just personally got a big kick out of the similarity.

Ridgid SeeSnake MicroExplorer to be Replaced by Ridgid CA-300

The Ridgid SeeSnake Explorer has been one of the most successful handheld inspection camera. It was one of the first handheld units to record onto a SD card and it offered digital self leveling which was accurate and very handy. When the units launched originally they seemed to be very well priced just below $700 however as technology progressed many of the competitors were able to launch similar products that also had recording function but for several hundred less.

New Bosch Compact Cordless Band Saw BSH180-01

A while back we had a chance to test the Bosch 18V cordless band saw BSH180-01 ($398, Ohio Power Tool) against some of the competition and found it to be a very nice tool. For a long time Milwaukee was the standard but now there are several other players in the field making for some stiff competition.

Ridgid SeeSnake CS10 - Thumb Drive Video Inspection Recording

It seems like the technology keeps changing when it comes to Ridgid SeeSnake Monitors and recording equipment. For a long time VHS was king, well after DVDs were the standard for movie watching. Eventually it all switched over to DVD but now there are several more recording options. The Explorer with microREEL uses SD cards, LT1000 saves direct to a laptop and now the new SeeSnake 12” Monitor CS10 ($3868, Ohio Power Tool) can record directly onto USB thumb drives.

Viega Challenge: Ridgid ProPress Tool vs Sweating Copper Pipes

Viega manufactures copper and stainless steel fittings for use in a wide variety of plumbing applications. The Viega products are unique as they require no flux or soldering, safer with no open flame, much quicker to install and less chance for failure. This is because the connections are made by pressing (7200 lbs pressure) the metals together to form a secure seal. Since Viega is a fittings manufacturer they partnered with Ridgid to produce the ProPress Tools needed for the system. For the rest of this year Viega & Ridgid will be touring the country with the Viega Challenge to test plumbers speed to see if they can sweat copper pipe faster than the ProPress can make a seal. Tee shirts, cash cards and Ridgid ProPress tools can all be won but if you can’t make it out, you can also register online. Visit the www.ViegaChallenge.com website for more details on prizes, dates and how to win!

Recording Video to Laptop with a Ridgid SeeSnake Micro

We are now on the third generation of the Ridgid SeeSnake Micro ($224, Ohio Power Tool) and one question remains very prevalent for all 3 generations; “can I record video onto my laptop”. Yes, you can however first you should probably ask yourself how often you will need to be capturing video. If you plan to capture video every time you use the camera it would definitely be advantageous to use one of the handheld recording devices with a built in SD card like the Ridgid Micro Explorer ($697, Ohio Power Tool) that you can simply transfer over later. If you think it might just be every once in a while the SeeSnake Micro may work very well for you.

New Ridgid Water Jetting Machine KJ-3100 with 16HP

Recently announced Ridgid has come out with their largest drain cleaning water jetter yet. The KJ-3100 ($5669, Ohio Power Tool) can handle up to 10” lines at 5.5 gallons-per-minute. This is slightly larger than the existing KJ-3000 which is rated to handle up to 8” lines at 4.5 gallons-per-minute. Both units are powered by Honda gas engines but the new KJ-3100 gets a bump up to 16hp from 13hp that is on the KJ-3100. It seemed like an obvious next step as people were looking for more power, but the units remain relatively easy to maneuver through doorways and load on a truck which is key. Check out the recently uploaded instructional video below to learn more on operating these machines. (Actually video for KJ-2200 & KJ-3000 but much of the operation remains the same for the KJ-3100)

If you have any questions on Ridgid jetter or any other Ridgid drain cleaning equipment the professionals at Ohio Power Tool 800-242-4424 would be happy to answer any questions you might have. Read more in the official Ridgid press release below.

The new SeeSnake Micro CA-100 ($224, Ohio Power Tool) has a new design with several upgrades from the previous version, not to mention a slightly lower price. Milwaukee M28 Cordless Tools Are Here… And with a Bang

Over the past few months the industries first lithium-ion tool line, Milwaukee V28, got an overhaul to the Milwaukee M28. Many of the industry leading tools remained the same however all the battery systems now features the latest and greatest M technology to increase each tools power, runtime and prolong the battery life.

The nice guys at Ohio Power Tool were not happy to just let everyone know they had all the new tools in-stock however they also felt compelled to give a ton of stuff away. So until the end of the month or until supplies run out (most likely the second) Ohio Power Tool is giving away a M28 Battery 48-11-2830 ($159, Ohio Power Tool) with every 3 Tool ($599) & 4 Tool ($719) Combo Kit. Also with any individual tool kit (not including bare tools) they are giving away a one of the brand new M28 LED Flashlights 49-24-0187 ($59, Ohio Power Tool). This even includes the brand new hammer drill 0726-22 which features 750 in-lbs torque!

New Milwaukee Sawzall Blades for Flush Cut & Rough-In

When we received this latest Milwaukee press release (see below) we were surprised nobody had made a similar flush cut reciprocating blade before. Last May we helped out on a local Habitat Blitz Build and personally cut all the doorway plates from the pre-made walls. We of course used the blade upside-down in the Sawzall to get it as close to level with the floor as possible but still required a little finesse to not hit the blade against the concrete more than necessary. This blade will make the job much easier and faster. It's just odd that it has not been thought of before. The new blades also feature “The Fang” and “Nail Guard”, check out our recent post to see the videos on those new features. These will both be available shortly on the page for Sawzall Blades at Ohio Power Tool.

Tool Launch Déjà Vu – Ridgid Infrared Thermometer & Gas Sniffer

If you think you are have tool Déjà Vu you are not alone. In a post almost 3 years ago, on Coptool.com (the long long ago) we announced Ridgid had come out with an Infrared Thermometer and Gas Sniffer. After some time those products went away but now they are back new and improved (apparently they dropped the "Gas Sniffer" name but sorry guys we'll never call it anything else). In the meantime however several new players have come to market with their own products and while the stats look pretty respectable on both new items they are probably not compelling enough to replace existing tools. They will both be available shortly on the Ridgid Handheld Inspection page of Ohio Power Tool. Below is more information from the official Ridgid Press Release.

DeWalt 12V Max Inspection Camera with Detachable Screen DCT410S1

We talked about the new 12v Inspection Camera from DeWalt briefly back in June when we did the DeWalt 12v Max Rundown but we thought it might be a good opportunity to go a little deeper on this unit. As we mentioned before this may potentially be our favorite new 12v DeWalt tool in the lineup. At $299 the DCT410S1 (Amazon.com) is a pretty good deal, although it only comes with (1) 12V Max battery that is plenty to power the camera for a day’s worth of normal use.

Milwaukee Tool New Sawzall Blades with Actual Fangs

Possible the most secretive of all the new tools and accessories we learned about at the Milwaukee Media Event was their new Sawzall Blades. Even the sample they sent us had our name printed on it as a "special edition"; either because they think our ego is huge or they don’t want us selling it to the highest bidder. These are not even new models simply improvements on their existing wood blades including several standard and The Ax products. These new blades will be working their way into inventory starting November 1st. So why the secrecy? Obviously Milwaukee Tool prides themselves on the Sawzall, along with the blades, as they are the inventors. These guys are not messing around when it comes to the Sawzall. Two guaranteed ways to really get a Milwaukee Rep excited put a Lenox or Bosch Blade on a Milwaukee Sawzall or call another manufacturers reciprocating saw a “Sawzall”.

So what is going to make you search out these new blades the next time you are looking for some wood reciprocating blades? There are 2 new features on these blades the Nail Guard & Fang Tip you might find interesting.

Bosch OIS Universal Oscillating Tool Accessories & Adaptor

The biggest problem with multi-tools today is that hardly any of the oscillating accessories are interchangeable with one another. This can be a real problem because while we would love to believe all purchases can be made online, often when you get to that weekend project and realize your blades are so dull they couldn’t cut butter it’s off to the depot store. In many cases that means very limited selection on oscillating tool blades and sanding accessories and most likely ones that are not going to work with your tool.
Bosch is now establishing the universal system of Oscillating Interface System (OIS) which features 12 points of contact, the most of any system. The Bosch guys are hoping this will become as universal as the “SDS” system which they made popular and is now the standard. It is very positive to see Milwaukee adopt the OIS system for their new Milwaukee M12 Multi-Tool coming later this year. We never would have guessed Bosch and Milwaukee would be working together on anything. If other professional brands that still don’t have oscillating tools were to follow suit it is likely this will be the case. We will see where DeWalt, Makita, Metabo and others all fall when they inevitable come out with their own multi-tools.

Bosch RS7 Reciprocating Saw with LED Light

It seems to be the trend in power tools these days that any tool can be improved with an LED light. Unlike the trend of putting lasers beams on every power or hand tool out there we are actually a big fan of LED lights on many tools. On the jobsite, shop, backyard or garage you are not always going to have the greatest lighting and seeing that dull pencil line through the blade guard isn’t always the easiest task.

The Bosch Reciprocating Saw RS7 ($99, Ohio Power Tool) replaces the RS5 and increases power to 11amps. This is the light weight, medium duty model but it still has some serious power so for most plumbers, electricians and homeowners it will perform very well. Unless you are doing a lot of demolition work in most cases the larger 15amp reciprocating saws or Sawzalls are just going to be added weight. Also check out the new Saw Blades including Milwaukee Sawzall diamond grit and Bosch Edge for Metal Cutting.

PEX System Rundown: Uponor (ProPEX) vs Viega (PureFlow)

Cross-Linked Polyethylene Tubing or PEX plumbing systems have become the norm in new building today with companies continue to find new and innovative uses for the resource. In addition to replacing copper tubing for many traditional plumbing needs it is also an idea choice for radiant floor heating and now quickly becoming a popular option for fire sprinkler installations. Unfortunately all PEX systems are not uniformly configured and there are several systems to consider, hopefully this will give a little background on the different options out there.

As history will tell us it is common for there to be many players in new technologies but eventually 1 or 2 main players with emerge and they become the standard. Early adopters of Betamax, MiniDiscs & HDDVD will tell you after shelling out small fortunes for the newest gear it can be painful to see you technology never take off. Even though Betamax was a high quality than VHS, it matters little when the technology is gone, majority rules.

Ridgid CS1000 Digital Recording LCD Monitor 32603 & 32608

New from Ridgid is the SeeSnake 12.1” LCD Monitor with built-in digital recording onto an internal hard drive or 2 thumb drive slots. The CS1000 model 32603 ($5276, Ohio Power Tool) is designed for rugged jobsite use and transportation with features like protective screen cover, daylight LCD and fold-up waterproof keyboard. The CS1000 model 32608 ($5609, Ohio Power Tool) is the same unit but also includes 2 of the Ridgid Plumbing 18V batteries and charger which can be used simultaneously on this monitor providing a full days worth of power for the monitor and reel.

The CS1000 allows for fully functional video recording as well as still image capturing but the real advantage for this unit is it has the SeeSnake HQ reporting software built-in (same software you get with Laptop LT1000) which is ideal for tracking jobs, making notes, billing and sharing with the office. It also makes for very easy integration with RIDGIDConnect for online storage of all the jobs and information.

Free Milwaukee M12 XC Battery 48-11-2402 & Free Shipping

We have mentioned the Milwaukee M12 XC Battery before which is more than just a battery with longer runtime. The M12 XC Battery 48-11-2402 ($79, Ohio Power Tool) actually adds power & speed to many tools as well as runtime. In lab testing with the 3/8” Drill/Driver 2410-22 ($149, Ohio Power Tool) the time it took to drill a 1” hole went from 16 seconds to 9 seconds. The Stall Torque went from 250 in.lbs to 310 in.lbs, just by switching to the XC battery. Similar gains are reported for the M12 Impact Drivers, Hackzall, Screwdrivers and other tools. The flat rubber over-molded base also makes the tool much more stable in the upright position as well as protects finished surfaces from marring. *Note the M12 plumb laser and M12 sub-scanner are the only 2 tools that cannot fit the larger battery.

During the month of August, Ohio Power Tool is running a Free UPS Ground Shipping special for all Milwaukee Tool, simply use Coupon Code “MILWAUKEE” in the check out or call 800-242-4424. In addition to that cost savings you will also for a very limited time be able to get a FREE M12 XC Battery 48-11-2402 with the purchase of any Milwaukee M12 Tool Kit. That is an $80 value with most M12 Tools ranging from $99-$199, this is an incredible deal. The FREE battery ships with the tools, no waiting for a Mail-In Rebate to come. Supplies are very limited on this offer so place your order now; it may not be around tomorrow or even when you get home from work.

Milwaukee Test & Measure Tools - Free M12 Drill Deal

Earlier this week we were at a Milwaukee Tool event where we got to see all the cool new tools coming out later this year but also had some time to learn a little more about the products Milwaukee currently has out on the shelves. One of those product lines was the Milwaukee Test & Measure Tools which are available as part of the Milwaukee M12 line or as regular Alkaline Tools. Typically the regular battery tools are going to be the more general purpose meters & tools while the M12 tools are going to provide some advanced features. One instance is the regular Temp Gun ($149, Ohio Power Tool) has a temperature range from -20 to 932 with the M12 Temp Gun ($369, Ohio Power Tool) goes -40 to 1472 & provides a humidity measurement.

Milwaukee ProPEX Cordless Expansion Tools M12 & M18

Just yesterday Milwaukee Tools held a very nice event for the Tool/Construction Media crowd and provided a lot of hands on for current products as well as some products which will be coming out in the next few months. Everett from Pro Tool Reviews did a nice job recapping the whole event so we aren’t going to bore you with our version. We were really happy to see so much focus from the Red Team on Plumbers, Electricians, HVAC & Maintenance as well as their growing relationships with many of the governing associations for those trades. Probably the best example of that, which we took away from the event was in the new ProPEX tools.

Bosch 12V Max PS41-2A Impactor – The Review

You may have read our review on the Bosch PS21-2A which was very favorable for the 3rd generation Bosch 12V Max Pocket Driver. The PS41-2A Impactor ($169, Ohio Power Tool), which was also recently updated (now in its 2nd generation) while not as big of a leap as the PS21, still saw a solid improvements in performance. We received one of these for testing and tried to push the Impactor to its limits. We also compared it to a popular Drill/Driver model to highlight some of the benefits of the Impact Driver.

Bosch & Sortimo Join Forces On L-Boxx Tool Storage

Already in the last week we’ve posted on the new Bosch Glide Miter Saw as well as the new Bosch 2.3HP Routers but there are still many more products to go. Another innovative product from the Bosch Media Event was the new L-Boxx container system Bosch will be selling and integrating with their existing tool line. The L-Boxx system has 4 container sizes with a variety of inserts for sorting and accessory storage. Pricing on these hard case looks to be in the $50-70+ range however the good news, we just heard today officially, these will be available with some of the most popular Bosch Tools as early as this fall. Even better news the target retail pricing looks to be right in line with current street pricing. Bosch 12V drill PS31-2AL (target $159), Multi-X oscillating PS50-2BL (target $199) & a new Jig Saw (more info to follow) will be the first 3 items to launch in addition to standard storage case.

Dremel Multi-Max Oscillating Blades MM462 & MM463

Both of these new Dremel Multi-Max Blades are similar in size with the 1-1/8” width & 1-1/4” depth making them the largest strait cutting blades Dremel offers. Both will work on wood but the MM463 has a much more aggressive “Japanese” tooth pattern which would probably be ruined by any metal cutting. The new metal & wood MM462 actually looks more like a metal blade than even the other ¾” wood & metal blade MM422 because of the slightly curved teeth. This would probably be your best bet for copper and non-ferrous metals but still not the right tool for serious metal work. In the package at the store or even the pictures online they look similar but will definitely have a different cutting behavior in your oscillating tool.

New Ridgid K-45 Drain Cleaning Gun with AUTOFEED

The Ridgid K-39 Drain Machine ($319-$454, Ohio Power Tool) has been a staple for many plumbers and maintenance pros for years. Just announced, Ridgid will be replacing the model with the new K-45 machine, which will continue to be available in manual or AUTOFEED versions.

The new K-45 ($454, Ohio Power Tool) units are very similar to K-39 units with the same available cable & cutter packages as well as the same pricing. The difference however is the new unit gets an improved handle and motor with a nice power increase; 0-450RPM (K-39) vs 0-600RPM (K-45). The AUTOFEED feature works the same for both units and is the same feature that helped win the Plant Engineering Product of the Year in 2006. Check out the full POWERFEED Demo Video here.

Ohio Power Tool is an excellent source not only for Ridgid Plumbing Equipment but also for all the cables and cutters needed for the Drain Machines. As an authorized service center they are very knowledgeable in Ridgid products and stock a full range of parts and consumables.

Quick Tips for Longer Lasting Bi-Metal Hole Saws

When using bi-metal Hole Saws it's easy to not follow the proper directions and become disappointed with the lack of performance. No matter what brand you are using there are some basic things you can do to extend the life of any Hole Saw. First have you ever looked at the proper RPM chart for your hole saws based on size & material? ...What Usage Chart?

All Hole Saw Kits or Individual pieces should come with a chart of some kind that gives the proper RPM for Wood, Aluminum, Mild Steel, Stainless Steel, Etc. Since that packaging is probably deep in a landfill somewhere just keep a few numbers in mind. For a 2” Hole Saw the recommended RPM for wood is 2000, the recommendation for Stainless Steel however is 85 RPM. For a 5” Hole Saw the numbers are even lower 800 RPM for wood, 30 RPM for Stainless Steel (or 1 revolution every 2 seconds). Obviously no big deal on wood but that's pretty slow for the steel and easy to way over do it. Other types of metals such as Aluminum or Mild Steel you can go a little faster but not like you are zippin through a 2x4 of pine. If you should fine that handy cutting guide you will also probably notice a disclaimer that says “Cutting Oil Recommended” and if you want to extend the life of your Hole Saw you should probably use cutting oil with any metal cutting.

The slow speed and cutting oil both help to keep the Hole Saw cooler, over heating will kill any Hole Saw no matter what the brand, price or fancy selling features. For serious cutting in metal you might also want to look at Annular Cutters that will work in standard drills and do a much better job.

If you have questions about any Hole Saws contact Ohio Power Tool at 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com they stock a wide range of bi-Metal, Carbide, Diamond and other specialty hole saws.

Bosch 5 Point Dot Laser GPL5C Adds Top & Bottom Crosslines

Several months ago the Bosch 5 point GPL5C ($299, Ohio Power Tool) hit the shelves and has been fairly popular. However since people are not used to using dot lasers with cross lines it can be hard to justify the price difference from the Bosch 5 point GPL5 ($199, Ohio Power Tool). A few days ago Bosch released the view below which should help determine if the cross line is going to be a time saver for you or not but in most cases it should be well worth it. Quick Guide to Selecting a Driver Bit Set

Everyone needs a good driver bit set in the arsenal even if you aren’t a professional or serious DIYer it’s always a good idea to have a few extra bits handy. When you start looking at bits sets however you’ll realize pretty quick they all fairly different as far as what’s included. First you have several types of screwdriver bits Phillips, Slotted, Square & Torx. Then you have 1”, 2” & 2 sided 2”. There are also “Impact Bits” for all these options as well. In addition to just the screwdriver bits some kits include nutsetters, socket adaptors, hex drill bits and quick change adaptors.

New Ridgid P-TEC 2500 Thin-wall PVC Cutter 34943

Today Ridgid announced a new cutting tool specifically designed for 1-1/4” & 1-1/2” thin-walled PVC that cuts and deburrs simultaneously. The new cutter features a handy view window which makes this inexpensive cutting tool look to be very accurate. Below is the official Ridgid verbiage and a nice video which further explains the new product and how to use it.

Building upon its proud heritage of delivering the most innovative tools in the market, RIDGID is proud to announce the availability of the P-TEC 2550 Tailpiece Extension Cutter 34943 ($18.08, Ohio Power Tool).  The P-TEC is the first cutter of its kind that provides the hassle free ability to execute a clean, fast, and straight cut on thin-walled plastic tube. The P-TEC can be used on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and thin-walled PVC disposer kits, tailpieces, and wall tubes of two standard sizes: 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" OD; both sizes with the same tool.

M18 Hackzall 2625-21 vs M12 Hackzall Vs Bosch 18V Recip

So when the M18 Hackzall 2625-21 ($199, Ohio Power Tool) was first mentioned the stats looked fairly similar to the M12 Hackzall with a slightly larger stroke ½” vs ¾” with M18. Even when comparing them side by side (see pictures here) they looked similar in size, not counting the larger M18 battery. When it came time to test them out however the Milwaukee M18 Hackzall was clearly a different animal than its M12 little brother.

Out of The Box

The Hackzall has a very low price point; with the “Tool Only” version 2625-20 at only $109 it is far less expensive than the M18 Sawzall $199 price. The tool is very light and well balanced in the hand as well as claims the lowest vibration levels “in its class”. The 2625-21 kit also has a pretty low price but only includes (1) M18 XC battery and a work bag instead of a plastic case, some people prefer. These units will also work with the compact M18 batteries for ultra light weight although personally I would recommend using the larger XC batteries as any saw is going limit your battery life.

Milwaukee adds M12 & M18 ProPex Tools

They say it’s important to know who your customers are and there is little doubt Milwaukee Tools has at least picked the customers they are going to aim new products at. Many of the new Milwaukee cordless tools have found very specific professional applications such as the PVC cutter, Grease Gun and No-Hub Coupling driver. These may never be huge sellers at the big box stores but for the pros who use them daily and see the benefits they are very happy to see this level of innovation. Milwaukee’s new partnership with Uponor and their ProPEX system has again put them in a place where they are the only kids in the sandbox. There will be a new tool for both the Milwaukee M12 & Milwaukee 18 tool lines although full specs, pricing and launch dates are not yet available. Read the full Milwaukee press release below.

Bosch Cordless Specials Holster & Tool Belts

While the limited supplies last Ohio Power Tool is giving away some pretty nice Bosch gear. The holsters for the Bosch 12V Tools have been pretty popular and fit the PS21-2A, PS31-2A & PS40-2A very nicely. The minimum order for the Holster is $199 so if you pickup one of these kits you will also need to purchase some drill or driver accessories or additional tools to get over the hump. Any of the combo kits will get you there no problem. Yes, the holster comes instantly with the tool so you can also take advantage of the really nice Mail-In Rebate for the 12Vs to get a free tool, 12V battery or LED flashlight. Remember you must use the Coupon code at checkout: HOLSTER or call in and mention the special to the nice folks at Ohio Power Tool.

If that wasn’t enough there is also a FREE Tool Belt for Bosch 18V Tools for any order over $399. This should be an easy mark to hit because the new Power Box PB360S ($209, Ohio Power Tool) is available for pre-sale and would be a nice addition to any 18V Tool Kit. There is also a free MP3 player (similar to iPod Shuffle) which comes instantly with the Power Box, don’t hesitate to double dip. For this offer you must use Coupon Code: TOOLBELT at checkout or call in.

If you want to quadruple dip and do an order over $599 and take advantage of all the free goods you might need to call the order in, but it’s definitely possible.

New Milwaukee M18 Hacksaw 2625-21 & 2625-21CT

The Milwaukee M12 hacksaw 2420-22 ($179, Ohio Power Tool) has been an incredibly popular seller, with the pistol grip it is far more user friendly for 1 hand cutting than your traditional reciprocating Sawzall. Milwaukee has also recently come out with high capacity M12 XC Battery ($79, Ohio Power Tool) which not only give the M12 hacksaw longer runtime but actually gives the tool more power.

Available soon you will have the option of an M18 Hacksaw which will come with either the M18 slim or XC battery. This will be a good addition for those that already have other Milwaukee M18 tools. For many professionals there will be plenty of justification to have both a Sawzall & Hacksaw on the jobsite.

The only difference I can see in the stats is that the M18 has a ¾” stroke vs M12 with a ½” stroke. Otherwise it looks to be the same 0-3000 SPM speed and Quik-Lok keyless blade holder. We will let you know more as these become available.  Checkout the youtube video below:

New Milwaukee Hand Tools Coming in April

Yesterday Milwaukee Tool announced several new hand tools to be available very shortly. There are some new features that make these more than just shelf filler items. There is a new 11 in 1 screw driver with ECX bits, a new jab/rasping saw and 2 new utility knives coming next month.

Eliminating the need for users to carry multiple drivers, the 11 in 1 Screwdriver comes complete with 9 fastening functions including #1 Phillips, #2 Phillips, 1/4” slotted, 3/16” slotted, #1 ECX™,  #2 ECX™,  and 1/4”, 5/16” and 3/8” nut drivers. In addition, an integrated wire stripper and wire bending hole allow the user to strip and/or bend up to 12 gauge wire before fastening to electrical boxes.

“No other jab saw on the market integrates the cutting and rasping functions needed to expand holes,” says Tim Albrecht, Group Product Manager- Hand Tools for Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation. “We are constantly looking for ways to make applications easier and increase productivity. The less time wasted switching from tool to tool, the more productive the user will be.”

To combat the likelihood of the blade bending or breaking, the new Milwaukee® Rasping Jab Saw features the most durable 6” Plaster/Drywall blade available on the market. The saw also features rubber over mold to increase comfort and prevent hand slippage.

Designed to activate the blade 3X faster than a 2-handed opening, the Fastback™ Utility Knife features a one handed blade opening for easy activation. In addition, a tool free blade change allows for fast and efficient adjustments, while a thin body design makes it easy for a user to store the knife in their pocket. An integrated gut hook and wire stripper also increase utility by allowing the user to make cuts without exposing the blade and eliminates the need to look for another tool to accomplish the task at hand.

Activated by a side sliding mechanism rather than a cumbersome top button, the Sliding Utility Knife also features a tool free blade change and wire stripper for increased efficiency. Complete with rubber over mold to increase comfort and reduce hand slippage, the new tool also includes on board blade storage to avoid looking for blades on the job and is designed to fit in a tool pouch for added convenience.

Expect more new hand tools from Milwaukee and they all feature a Lifetime warranty. Designed specifically for the professional tradesman market these new hand tools promise innovation and best in class performance. More news to come as these products are available.

New Product from Pumper Show – SeeSnake to Laptop LT1000

This past week was the Pumper Show down in Louisville, KY and was very curious about the show so we took a drive down early on Saturday. Set up like other trade shows but there was an emphasis on end user selling for many of the vendors we talked to with show special pricing and some products even stacked up in booths. As far as the pumper products went we really had no interest although have to say I was really impressed with the Blacktie setup, classiest port-a-johns ever possibly.

Ridgid had a good sized booth and lots of interactive displays and challengers for using some of their machines. The big emphasis from Ridgid was on “going digital” with their new RidgidConnect service. It is very clear in this could be a great business tool for many plumbers, inspectors, etc. The best new product from the show was the final piece of this digital puzzle. The SeeSnake to Laptop connection system and software introduced as part of the SeeSnake LT1000. This platform sites on top of the SeeSnake Reels (fits mini & full size) and connects directly to a laptop or microExplorer ($690, Ohio Power Tool). The Ridgid LT1000 ($1756, Ohio Power Tool) also has a full waterproof touch pad to control recording and keep your gloved hands off the laptop keyboard. Software is included for full viewing of most laptops, exact specs for laptop requirements coming soon. The LT1000 will run off battery or AC power and even includes new reel feet stabilizers to keep the reel in place.

The Ridgid LT1000 will be available in a few months; more information and pre-sale will be available on OhioPowerTool.com in the Ridgid SeeSnake section as we get closer to the launch date. The LT1000 should cost around $2000 and will include a 60 free trial to Ridgid Connect which with a wireless internet card would mean inspection could go from reel to office to customer in a matter of minutes.

New Milwaukee Sawzalls 6509-31 & 6519-31

Milwaukee takes great pride in the fact that they invented the Sawzall recip saw almost 60 years ago. They really don’t like it when anyone else makes a competitive saw so naturally they are constantly updating and coming out with different versions to be more powerful, durable, lighter, cheaper, faster or some combination thereof. The two new models are both 12 amp models where the 6509-31 has a ¾” stroke and 6519-31 has the 1-1/8” stroke. These should replace the current 6509-22 11 amp models and be similar in price, maybe $120-130 range. The new saws feature a gear protecting clutch to extend the life of saw, counter weight to decrease vibration and claims a 2x faster cut time (not sure what that is comparing). We haven’t gotten an exact date on the release but it should be soon. It will be interesting to see how these perform vs the larger Sawzalls. More info and pricing will be available soon, in the mean time checkout all the Milwaukee Tools on Ohio Power Tool. Full Milwaukee press Release below.

Milwaukee M12 Cordless No-Hub Driver 2455-22

Milwaukee posted on their website an interesting new tool. It is a new Milwaukee M12 screwdriver that has 3 torque settings: 60 in-lbs, 80 in-lbs & drill. The main purpose of the new drill/driver is to install no-hub couplings most accurately to their specifications. The M12 2455-22 ($299, Ohio Power Tool) is the first if its kind in the industry and designed to install 300 clamps per charge and only needs recalibrated every 25,000 clamps. Every no-hub coupling give a specific torque setting threshold and there are manual tools on the market but nothing cordless in a package this compact. Obviously this won’t be a tool for everyone with such a specific application but it does reinforce the idea Milwaukee is making tools for professionals even in their 12 volt tools.

The 2455-22 should be in-stock in the very near future. The Milwaukee M12 Tool line now has over 20 models available, check them out on Ohio Power Tool and feel free to email sales@ohiopowertool.com if you have any questions about Milwaukee Tools. Read the full press release below.

Rotozip Variable Speed Spiral Saw RZ2000 Kit

It is pretty safe to say Rotozip has gone well beyond a handy tool for cutting out drywall at this point. The inventor of the spiral saw is still the best option for quick cutting in drywall but now the tools come standard with attachments to use the XWheel & ZipWheel saw blades. This changes the whole functionality of these tools and opens the gates to a wide range of cutting in metal, tile, masonry, stone, wood, grout removal and other materials. While these new Rotozip Accessories have been out over a year now, some of the trades they are best intended are just now adopting them.

The RZ2000 Spiral Saw Kit ($167 Ohio Power Tool) is the latest kit to come out and includes an even better saw attachment head with a handle. The saw is more powerful at 6.0amp, variable speed (15,000-30,000RPM), ideal for the growing range of applications. The kit also has a variety of saw blades and rotary bits all packed into a nice new case.

Checkout all the different options for Rotozip Spiral Saws and Accessories as well as the very popular Tile Dock ($69 Ohio Power Tool). You can see the Tile Dock and Diamond bit in the video below. Rotozip is a part of Bosch Tool so you know the quality is excellent, it also means the cordless Rotozip works with the Bosch 18v litheon batteries. If you have any questions about Rotozip tools email sales@ohiopowertool.com.

Armor Apparel – Your New Favorite Work Pants

*** 3/10/11 - Note changed their name to ARMED WORKWEAR, after apparent issues with copyrights and Under Armor

Armor Professional Work Wear makes work pants (mostly for painters) that have additional pockets for knee pads. Sounds like a simple gimmick that you might think, big deal, at first glance. I was lucky enough to demo a pair and was very impressed. The construction of the pants was very solid, material was a heavy weight but still comfortable. The knee pads are flexible squares that simply slide in and out of the knee pockets so it’s very easy to take them out for wearing them around the house and then put them in when it’s time to work. Not to say they are a problem to leave in because you really don’t notice the knee pads just walking around.

The knee pads will not replace a true knee pad for those laying flooring or other such work but for just doing projects around the house or general construction work you wouldn’t believe how they change the way you work. Our shop has concrete floors but when you are wearing these it changes the way you work by allowing you to get down under projects like second nature. I also showed them to a cable installer and he thought they were the greatest invention since sliced bread because in addition to added support, these would help keep his knees from getting muddy/wet outside.

The background story on these pants in also pretty interesting one. It is all about professional painters but I think they are ideal for anyone who has a favorite pair of work pants, which I would bet is everyone who reads coptool.com. Cost is $35 (white) & $40 (tan) per pair. Here is a YouTube on these:

Ridgid Launches a New Online Service at RIDGIDConnect.com

Ridgid has been busy at work upgrading their SeeSnake video inspection equipment to smaller, lighter, less expensive, more user friendly and digitally formatted equipment. All the new products now work with either DVD or SD cards, both of which can now be easily uploaded onto a laptop and sent to a new website RIDGIDConnect.com from the jobsite or anywhere. This new web service will then index the videos and other files which can be sent to customers, shared amoung co-workers and kept safe for years to come.

I just watched the Web Cast for the launch of RIDGIDConnect given by Jay Gatz, VP of Strategic Planning and there were some statistics I found interesting in their research. Of those currently using video inspections equipment 60% are already recording digitally on DVD or other media, 51% currently use laptops on the jobsite, 65% said they needed to save the recordings for a year or more and 40% said they needed to share the recordings with other people. It looks like pricing for the service will run between $49 - $129/month which could be worth it for many reasons. Obviously if some 40% are still recording inspections onto VHS this service will not be for everyone but seems like it would be the next logical step in improving efficiency. Checkout the full Ridgid Press Release Below the video:

Ridgid SeeSnake New 100’ microREEL vs 30’ microDRAIN

Its official today Ridgid has available the new 100’ microREELs which are the big brothers of the SeeSnake microDRAINs (30’). With the addition of the new line comes many different options to configure both systems so to keep things strait the microDRAIN also picks up model number D30, while the microREEL can also be referred to as the L100.

The microDRAIN now also has an optional 512Hz Sonde for locating the camera head, these models will be designated D30S. The case can be configured for use with microEXPLORER or traditional SeeSnake Monitors. There is also an option to simply purchase the Drum Only with either the D30 or D30S configuration, which will work with any of the microREELs. The microDRAIN camera head is still slightly smaller and more flexible so a better option for P-Traps and smaller lines with tight turns. (Popular models 32663, 34233, 33103, 34618)

The microREEL comes standard with a 512Hz Sonde but does have an option for a reel counter; these models are designated as L100C. Similar to the microDRAIN you can get a case that will work with the Explorer or traditional SeeSnake Monitors. The microREEL will also switch between microREEL drums and microDRAIN drums in a matter of seconds so the unit is extremely versatile. (Popular models 35133, 35183, 35143, 35188)

Ohio Power Tool has many of these new models in-stock and can answer specific questions on specifications and pricing. Call 800-242-4424 or email your questions to sales@ohiopowertool.com. Complete systems can run between $2,000-$4,000 which is significantly less than a system in the past and can pay for themselves fairly quickly. If you are interested in more info on the microREEL, checkout the short video below:

Rockwell Jawhorse RK9000 Review with Accessories

When setting this up there were several guys in and out of the workshop and I heard a couple of comments like, oh yeah I saw that on the infomercial. That was to be expect I suppose however one of the guy had actually said his mother asked if he wanted a Jawhorse for Christmas and if someone’s mom is asking about it for a Christmas present, I’m going to assume all the Coptool.com readers have at least heard about it. Also several other fellow bloggers have already done reviews on this: ToolSnob, HomeFixated (see their video below), Stu’s Shed, LumberJocks, Toolguyd, Toolmonger, etc.

Having seen the infomercial myself it seemed like the Jawhorse could potentially be a very handy piece of hardware however I don’t fully believe anything I see on TV. I just saw the movie Avatar and can no longer tell the difference between what’s real and what is CGI. So when this Jawhorse came in the mail I was pleasantly surprised that the box seemed to weigh a ton. Not so heavy you can’t carry it, but beefy metal construction (no plastic) with solid springs. The best way I can describe it would be to say it feels like if it fell off a moving truck I’m pretty confident it would still work fine. It was also fully assembled and set up in seconds, right out of the box. Because there are already so many other reviews on the Jawhorse itself I’m going to dive in on the 2 accessory kits I also had a chance to review. Checkout our 20+ review photos.

2010 Upcoming Trade Shows for New Tools & Products

January & February means prime time for industry trade shows, up north things are a little colder, slower and people perhaps have a couple of days to see what’s new in their industry. Here is a quick list of just a few of the shows happening in the next two months.

International Builders Show – January 19-22, 2010

The largest building industry tradeshow in the country! More than 175 education sessions and great keynote speaker! All the top vendors will be there for building supplies, tools, etc with interactive booths and displays. Plus its Las Vegas.

AHR Expo – January 25-27, 2010

This is the world’s largest HVAC&R industry trade show. In Orlando, Fl for 2010 this show is not only a great place to see new products, attend education sessions, network but also has great deals on some of those expensive products from many vendors. This trade show is designed specific for those in the Heating, Cooling and Refrigeration industries. We mentioned the show earlier as the place where Ridgid is planning their 2010 World Premier Product Launch.

World of Concrete – February 2-5, 2010

The industry's ONLY annual international event dedicated to the commercial concrete and masonry construction industries. Featuring indoor and outdoor exhibits with the industry's leading suppliers showcasing innovative products and technologies, exciting demonstrations and competitions, a world-class education program, and the information you need to help sustain and grow your business. This show is also another great Las Vegas show, maybe the only place big enough for the indoor/outdoor requirements in February.

The Rental Show – February 7-10, 2010

This show features a wide range of products from heavy construction, light construction/general tool and party/special event products together on one floor, in one continuous hall. The show is also in Orlando,Fl for 2010 and I am just curious who provides all the rental party/special event products for the show.

Pumper & Cleaner Show – February 24-27,2010

In Louisville, Ky for 2010 this show is specific for professionals in septic system installation & service contractors, drain and sewer cleaning & repair contractors, portable restroom operators, industrial maintenance & cleaning contractors, municipal water & sewer system maintenance managers and other related professional.

The Wood Working Shows – January 15-17, 2010
This show really isn’t in the same league as these others; it’s a much smaller show that travels around the country all year long. It will be making a stop in Columbus, Ohio in about a week and I’m planning to attend. Check the website and see when it makes it to a town near you.

Obviously there are many more shows throughout the year worth attending however these are just a few in the next 2 months. If you can’t make it but are interested in a particular show I would encourage you to check out the websites. Many have interactive floor plans and a lot of details. Also specific trade publications will attend and do a good job covering the shows with articles and videos (see http://www.forconstructionpros.com/video/).

Bosch Impactor 26618-01 - New 3 Setting Model for 18V

Bosch just today announced a new Impactor for the 18V Litheon line which has 3 settings for a much wider range of applications in driving and drilling applications. I personally haven’t had a chance to test one of these units yet but obviously this would be a welcome improvement on an already great tool. In the meantime checkout the official Bosch Press Release below. Pre-order the 26618-01 on Ohio Power Tool for $398.

Mount Prospect, Ill., – The fastest growing segment within the professional cordless power tool category is impact drivers. Yet some users have been hesitant to adopt the tools because they still needed a second tool for drilling. Bosch Power Tools & Accessories is removing that barrier this week by introducing the 26618-01 18V Impact Drill/Driver. By combining typical drilling and driving capabilities with the added power of impact fastening, Bosch’s multi-function tool offers pro users the power and versatility to tackle any number of common jobsite applications.

Bosch’s 26618-01 offers an ideal combination of torque, speed and control, all within a single tool. The result is incredible versatility. A two speed motor (0-750 / 2,800 RPM) offers users the choice between high speed for small diameter drilling and high torque/low speed for drilling with spade bits or precision driving applications. When it’s time to tackle large diameter driving and fastening applications, users can effortlessly switch to impact mode and let the tool’s best-in-class 1,500 inch pounds of torque (3X more than a standard drill/driver) do all the work. Even with all that power, the tool’s compact 7” length enables users to accomplish tough tasks in tight spaces. Powered by Bosch’s proven 18V Litheon battery platform, the 26618-01 offers best-in-class performance in almost every meaningful measure. Bosch’s powerhouse delivers  40 percent faster screw driving, 20 percent faster drilling, two times more holes drilled per charge and 50 percent more screws driven per charge. This high level of performance is thanks to side-by-side battery and tool engineering that yields highly efficient power output in every application. The 26618-01 is compatible with Bosch’s 18V Litheon SlimPack batteries, a feature unique to Bosch’s tool that offers even greater user flexibility on the jobsite. The 26618-01 is also built to withstand the rigors of heavy duty usage. Bosch’s Electronic Motor Protection (EMP) , for example, protects the motor from damage due to stalling and Electronic Cell Protection (ECP) protects the batteries from overloading, overheating and deep discharging. The result is the best runtime and longest battery life in the cordless tool category, even in demanding applications.

In terms of user comfort, Bosch’s soft grip surfaces reduce user fatigue and slippage, while the spring-loaded impact mechanism reduces the torque reaction and minimizes screw cam-out. Bosch’s patent-pending white light LEDs offer phenomenal visibility in dark or tight spaces. A sturdy metal belt hook, which can be mounted on either side of the tool, frees up hands to move materials into place.

New M12 Milwaukee 2415-21 Right Angle 3/8” Drill

Yep it’s another new tool for the Milwaukee M12 tool line. It seems like we have been posting several times a week on all the new Milwaukee Tools but they just keep coming out with really cool new stuff. The Milwaukee 2415-21 ($139) M12 Right Angle drill is no exception. Similar to the Bosch PS10-2a ($119) however the new Milwaukee has a 20% more torque, faster RPM and of course the 3/8” hard plastic chuck. The 2415-21 offers a respectable 100 in-lbs torque, 800 RPM with electronic 11 setting chuck however for serious drilling from a compact tool the 2410-22 ($149) is still the better way to go with more powerful 250 in-lbs, 2 speed 0-400/0-1500 RPM, (2) batteries in kit and a metal chuck.

Where this new drill really shines is in compact spaces, with a head length of only 3-3/4” this drill can get into places most other tool can’t with the versatility of using a 3/8” chuck. The M12 right angle drill also features a built-in LED work light, battery gauge and extended paddle switch.  Check out all the Milwaukee M12 tools at Ohio Power Tool.

Milwaukee M18 Compact Band Saw 2629-22

You may remember the post a few weeks ago on the corded Compact Band Saw 6249-6 ($199), well the cordless M18 Band Saw 2629-22 ($399) shares the same basic sizes and dimensions. They also both use the 35-3/8” blade and feature the built-in LED work light however the corded version does have variable speed while the cordless does not.

The new compact M18 Band Saw is 45% lighter than the Deep Cut V28 Band Saw but still has a 3-1/4” capacity large enough to handle many common tasks. Th light weight compact size paired with the built in LED work light this is possibly the best band saw on the market for getting into tight spaces. The M18 also offers up to 3x faster cut time and 3x longer battery life when compared to other 18 volt cordless band saws. If you already have other M18 tools and batteries you can also pick up the tool only version M18 Band Saw 2629-20 ($219).

If you have any questions about any of the Milwaukee portable band saws or any of the Milwaukee M18 tool feel free to call the pros at Ohio Power Tool 800-242-4424 or email any questions to sales@ohiopowertool.com.

Bosch Hole Saws – Universal Quick Change Kits

Bosch like many other manufacturers offer Hole Saws in many sizes and varieties however Bosch offers their entire hole saw line with the Universal Quick Change System. The quick change system is a significant time saver when switch between hole saws; it only takes a few seconds to simply unlock the mandrel and replace it with a new hole saw.

Bi-Metal Hole Saws – These are you typical all purpose type hole saw, good for wood, metal and other construction materials. The Bosch Bi-Metal hole saws are available in several kits including 17, 19 & 25 piece. The kits have a high number of pieces because the quick change adaptors are separate and include 7-11 in each kit. The adaptors also work on most other brands of competitors hole saws.

Carbide Tip Hole Saws – These hole saws have serious diamond sharpened carbide teeth and are ideal for wood, laminate, cementboard, masonry, roof tiles and many other materials. Incredibly strong and long lasting the quick change adaptor is built into each bit. The Kits are available in 5 & 8 piece.

Diamond Grit Hole Saws – The newest line of hole saws for Bosch, the Diamond Grit saws are made to cut marble, granite, tile and other hard materials. These hole saws do require water to stay cool; typically provided by a spray bottle. The individual hole saws above ¾” work with Universal Quick Change System and have the adaptors build in. They use the AutoStart pin to ensure a perfectly centered hole, another unique feature for Bosch. The Mini Diamond Hole Saws (3/16”-5/8”) don’t require the Quick Change Mandrel and will work in any standard drill. The Kits are available in 7 & 11 piece.

Checkout the video below if you still have questions on the Bosch Quick Change System and if that doesn’t do the job feel free to give the pros at Ohio Power Tool a call 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com.

Bosch 18-Volt Impactor Review on ToolSnob

I just got done reading a great review, up now on www.toolsnob.com, which spent 3+ months review the new Bosch 18v cordless Impactor. It looks and sounds like this tool was really put to the test including ladder drops and many other abuses.

My only complaint with the review was it states that the Impactor with (2) slimpacks starts at $250 (Amazon) but the ad on the top of their own site says you can get the Bosch 18v Impactor, Compact Drill/Driver & (2) slimpack batteries CLPK23-180 for $219 (Ohio Power Tool). Check out all the Bosch 18V Tools with some really great special pricing on Ohio Power Tool.

Milwaukee M12 Sub-Scanner 2290-21 Review

In stock now, the M12 Sub-Scanner 2290-21 was originally announced some time ago as part of the new M12 Test & Measurement tools (clamp-gun & temp-gun have been delayed). The Sub-Scanner is very very easy to use for finding studs, metal in concrete or live electrical wires. Without looking at any directions I’m pretty sure an 8 year old could operate this machine. Simply select stud or metal on the thumb control, hit CAL and you are in business. The Sub-Scanner has 4 wheels that easily glide over any surface. The only settings you can change are sound, units of measure (us/metric) and depth on stud finder. Checkout this Photo Album for more pictures.

On stud mode it shows a basic left, center, right which makes it almost idiot proof when finding studs. The “V” on the top of the tool lights up anytime you go over a live wire which is probably a pretty smart safety feature as well. You will feel very confident when you have found the center of the stud unlike some other stud detectors that simply beep or light up.

In metal mode the display is slightly more advanced but just as easy to use. It doesn’t give left or right indicators but does provide a depth reading and a Ferrous vs Non-Ferrous indicator. The tool is pretty accurate in metal mode; in the above picture you can see the rebar almost exactly 3.5” in the parking block.

Checkout all the Milwaukee M12 tools available on Ohio Power Tool. There are some very exciting things that have come out recently and more that will be launching soon. We will do our best to keep you up to date on all of it.

Milwaukee M12 PVC / PEX Shear Cutter 2470-21

How to cut PVC the easy way with this innovative tool, yet another addition to the Milwaukee M12 battery system. It is clear they are really going after the Plumbers, Electricians and other tradesman with their compact 12 volt tools and this is another perfect example. The M12 2470-21 ($199) is designed specifically for cutting PVC & PEX tubing and really isn’t made for much else, unless you wanted to remove an extra finger or two. If you are a plumber, install sprinklers or work with PVC a lot this could be a very handy tool. Currently the most popular alternative would be a manual ratcheting PVC cutter like the Ridgid RC-2375 ($87) which can get tiring if you are using it all day.

The cutter itself puts out 1,900 in-lbs torque which is plenty to get through 2” PVC in about 3 seconds. The 12 volt lithium battery is rated to make over 200 cuts per charge. Using the tool is very simple, hold down the safety and pull the variable speed trigger. Once the cut is made there is a separate quick release trigger, not sure why there is a reverse option on the cutter as the quick release works much better. The blade is very easy to change and the wrench for removing it is conveniently stored on the tool, another nice feature. Checkout this Photo Album for more images.

Will a tool like this be successful? The market for a PVC cutter is much smaller than for a handy tool like the M12 Hackzall and it will depend on if plumbers will adopt it. It is in a similar boat to the M12 Copper Cutter ($219) which seemed like a great idea but hasn’t seen a big shift away from the tried & true manual copper cutters like the Ridgid 118 ($28). However the manual copper cutters are significantly cheaper and can cut almost as quick with little effort. The price gap for the PVC cutters (manual vs M12) is much smaller, the 2470-20 (bare tool) is only $129 and the manual PVC cutters require much more effort. Hopefully the new Milwaukee 2470-21 will find lots of success among professional.

Some Fein Lookin’ Tools (Revisited) Bosch & Dremel

Exactly one year ago today we did a simple comparison post on some new oscillating tools coming out from Dremel and Bosch that would compete directly with the Fein Multi-Master. See Some Fein Looking Tools – Bosch PS50 & Dremel Multi-Max 9/9/08. Since then this post has held strong as our most viewed post ever. I wanted to take a second to revisit the post and perhaps add some more related links, photos & insight now that these tools have been around the block a few times.

Since the original post we added several YouTube Videos (See Below) as well as some additional posts for Bosch PS50 Accessories and Dremel Multi-Max Accessories as well as found some great post on other blogs including this post on toolsnob, one of the best I’ve seen.

Just for good measure I snapped twenty or so more pictures of these two tools and put them in this Facebook Album. Some of the points I was trying to highlight in the added photos would include the difference in size and shape, often people think the Dremel is larger but in fact the Bosch is slightly longer. The difference in Cases, the Bosch is a clear winner here. Also a few pictures of the vents, both of these tools can get hot but the Dremel is often run continuous for longer amounts of time and can get really hot. The Bosch being cordless is less equipped to run continuously so it often has at least a minute or so to cool during battery changes. One guy I spoke with who runs the Dremels all day long actually uses two Multi-Max and puts different attachments on each and use each for 20-30 minutes then switches to the other which saves him time from switching blades but also give the tools time to cool.

The accessories are also more substantial on the Bosch; in general the Dremel accessories are smaller, thinner metal but less expensive. The sanding pads do work interchangeably but you can see in this photo the Bosch sanding pads are slightly larger. Also you will see in this picture the Bosch adaptor which allows you to use Dremel or Fein blades as well. The Dremel is pictured with a simple washer because this is what we have found many of the tradesmen using so they could use the more substantial Bosch blades with the corded Dremel tool. Funny thing is I didn’t tell them to do this (legal disclaimer: nor would I ever suggest anyone ever alter a tool or make their own adaptors for any tool or accessory ever) but amazingly several different heavy users of these tools came up with the idea on their own. Obviously end users are going to figure out work arounds, manufacturers should accept that and make things easier on everyone.

If you are looking for Dremel Multi-Max ($99) or Bosch Multi-X PS50-2A ($179) PS50-2B ($199) or any of their oscillating tool accessories; Ohio Power Tool keeps all these tools and accessories in stock and able to handle quantity orders.

Ridgid Explorer vs Milwaukee M12 M-Spector AV - Full Review

Previously we did a post comparing some of the preliminary stats of the Milwaukee M-Spector AV vs Explorer however at that time we were just looking at the numbers from the M-Spector AV press release. Now the M12 M-Spector AV is in stock (at Ohio Power Tool at least) and we can do a more hands on comparison and see some of the differences between the two models.

Right off the bat you’ll see a good size difference in price, Ridgid Explorer 30063 ($690) vs Milwaukee M12 M-Spector AV 2311-21 ($399). So what does the extra $291 get you with the Ridgid and is it worth it? On the surface these two models look very similar, both feature 320x240 resolutin 3.5” screens, 17mm heads and ability to record still images & videos.

The Milwaukee M12 M-Spector AV 2311-21 even has several advantages despite the cheaper price tag. By simply being a part of the Milwaukee M12 line it gets a natural advantage as many people already have batteries, chargers and other tools. The actual M12 battery also lasts longer and charges faster than the Ridgid Explorer lithium battery, although I haven’t heard any complaints about Explorer battery life, it is always a big plus to have more time between charges. The Milwaukee also features a built in microphone for recording where the Ridgid requires a separate microphone.

The Ridgid Micro Explorer 30063 as you would expect for the price, obviously have several advantages over the Milwaukee. A big feature which is very clear when comparing them side by side is the self-leveling feature on the Explorer. This automatically keeps the image right side up which can be important when you are inspecting a pipe that takes a bend or just to keep you sanity. The Milwaukee does have a 180 degree flip option (shown above) which helps sometimes but other times just goes from one awkward view to another.

The Ridgid also wins against the Milwaukee with a much better designed camera head. The Explorer has 4 LED lights vs the Milwaukee single LED light. The head is also a better design with rounded metal face vs Milwaukee’s flat plastic piece. The Milwaukee head makes me nervous because it is very common to see abuse to these heads. The tips get pushed with considerable force to make any turns and all that pressure on that plastic piece… The Explorer also comes with the magnet, hook & mirror attachments (see below) which have proven very useful for specific tasks like pulling wires, recovering dropped screws or jewelry, etc.

The final reason you might pick the Micro Explorer SeeSnake over the Milwaukee is that while Ridgid isn’t building more products to use the same battery they are building products to work specifically with the Explorer. The microDRAIN 33103 for instance is a 30’ SeeSnake reel build specifically to attach to the Explorer and do line inspections. Although the microDRAIN has only been out for a number of weeks it has already had huge success among plumbers. This is the first and only camera that can pass through a toilet trap and is powered off the Explorer power supply. The Micro Explorer also features an expansion slot for future upgrades which, my best guess, could include thermal imaging or other cool technologies.

The verdict, while these two units look similar I would argue they are different enough that there are good reasons to select each. The Ridgid Explorer is a better unit all around but for many applications the added features may not justify the added price. If you need a simple handheld inspection tool you may consider the M12 M-Spector AV 2311-21 ($399) over the Ridgid Micro 31118 ($223) or the standard M-Spector 2310-21 ($249). Also if you need to simply document the inspection with images or video but don’t necessarily need to give the video to a customer the M-Spector AV is a good option. If you are planning to provide a copy to customers I would strongly suggest the Explorer using self leveling and keep them from getting seasick from an upside down spinning videos. Also I would recommend the Ridgid Explorer to any plumber hands down. Even if you are not yet ready to invest in the 30’ microDRAIN there are many additional products that will all be based on this platform coming down the pipe and when you are talking about SeeSnake reels which can cost thousands, paying a few hundred extra now is well worth it.

For many more pictures checkout this Facebook Photo Album. If you have any other questions on any Handheld Inspection Equipment give the professionals at Ohio Power Tool a call 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com.

New Milwaukee Compact Band Saw 6242-6

Milwaukee Tool is very well known for their portable band saws. Earlier this year they announced a completely redesigned Deep Cut Band Saw 6232-6N that significantly increased power, speed & overall performance. Because one size does not always fit all, Milwaukee is now coming out with a Compact Band Saw 6242-6 with a more economically friendly price of $199 (Ohio Power Tool). The new smaller band saw will weigh only 9.5 lbs, 45% less than the Deep Cut but still have a fairly large capacity of 3-1/4” vs the Deep Cut at 4-7/8”. With the smaller size and light weight design it is natural to assume it will be used in tighter spaces, so it made sense that they also added an LED work light currently not available on the Deep Cut model. The Compact Band Saw will be the size as the new M18 band saw that will also be coming out soon, more on that later.

If you have any questions about any of the Milwaukee Portable Band Saws do not hesitate to contact the pros at Ohio Power Tool, 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com.

Miwaukee Introduces Shockwave Accessories for Impact Tools

Recently Milwaukee introduced a completely new line of accessories designed to work specifically with Impact tools. These funny looking bits are designed to take the abuse of that constant impact force and the shockwave bits are claiming up to 10x life. The whole line will be available shortly on the Milwaukee Tool page of OhioPowerTool.com. (29 piece kit 48-32-4401 $19, Ohio Power Tool) Also we will do a follow up post on some real world testing applications but in the meantime checkout the official Milwaukee Tool press release below.

MILWAUKEE, WI – Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation introduces over 80 new products in its new line of Shockwave™ Impact Duty accessories. Delivering high performance and functionality, the full range solution was designed to stand up to elevated and extreme torque applications. The line includes high performance drill bits, nut drivers, sockets, bit holders and adapters.

"Impact tools are one of the fastest growing tool segments in the market today, but many accessory linescannot hold up under  the high torque of  impact applications,” says Mike Kirby, Sr. Product Manager-Accessories of Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation. "The new Shockwave™ Impact Duty Accessories offer a wider range of solutions for every user, and are engineered to absorb the stress of higher torque applications."

Made from a custom engineered steel and heat treated for high shock resistance, the Shockwave™ Impact Duty driver bits feature an innovatively designed Shock Zone™ geometry to absorb impact. In addition, a compressed forged tip delivers an ideal fit and eliminates breakage. The combination of proprietary material, heat treatment, and geometry deliver up to 10X longer life than the competition.

The product offering also includes user friendly features such as color coding on the nut drivers for easy size identifications and a thin wall construction on the professional grade sockets for easy access in tight areas. Broadly targeting cordless users, the Shockwave™ Impact Duty accessory line is not only ideal for  heavy duty impact applications, but is a full system solution for all the user’s drilling and fastening needs.

New Video for Bosch Diamond Hole Saws

Last month Bosch introduced their new line of Diamond Grit Hole saws (see original post).  The new hole saws are basically broken into two different groups the Mini & Auto-Start hole saws. The mini hole saws go from 3/16” to 5/8” and do not us a pilot, instead you need to start the bit at a 45 degree angle and work it into a vertical position. For the ¾” to 4-1/8” diamond hole saws the Auto-Start bit is used to give an exact measure on where the hole needs to line up and start the cut. Once started the Auto-Start bit is removed and the Diamond Hole Saw can continue cutting through the material. Adding water to cool the bit will extend the life of the bit significantly. Ohio Power Tool stocks the complete line of Bosch Hole Saws including the new Diamond Grit Hole Saws. Checkout the video below for a basic demonstration on how these different hole saws work. (The work surface in the video is the Rotozip Tile Dock, ideal for this application.)

Ridgid Roadshow Columbus Stop - Pictures & Video

Last Friday was the Ridgid Roadshow’s Columbus, Ohio stop. The weather was great, the bratwursts were delicious and all the new Ridgid tools were on hand with experts from Ridgid doing demonstrations. CJ Perry, Jan/Feb from the calendar, was also on hand signing Ridgid Calendar and looking amazingly good. All in all a real nice day and everyone who came out had a great time. Checkout all the pictures in this Facebook Photo Album (no account needed to view).

Some of the big hits from the show were the new stuff like the microDRAIN, DVDPak, Ratcheting Tube Cutter 118 and Soil Pipe Cutter. This was my first time seeing the new Soil Pipe Cutter 34403 ($396 Ohio Power Tool) and what a great idea. If you already have a ProPress tool you absolutely need to get one of these attachments, they save lots of time, very easy to use and increases functionality in your existing tools. Checkout the Roadshow video below for a quick demo of several of these tools.

Milwaukee M18 Hammer Drill vs their other M18 Hammer Drill

Yes that’s right Milwaukee has 2 M18 Hammer Drills the 2611-22 ($349) & 2602-22 ($299). The original M18 2611-22 is slightly larger with 650 in lbs torque while the new compact M18 2602-22 has 550 in lbs, still plenty of torque (in fact same as DeWalt’s 24V). So why 2 M18 ½” hammer drills and not say 1 SDS hammer? Milwaukee is covering all their bases with the M18 line so my guess is whatever you are looking for from a 18v cordless line is probably somewhere in the works. Personally I can’t feel the difference in weight, if there is any, the “compact” is only slightly shorter and virtually the same height, they use the same battery about the only difference I could tell beyond price & torque was the 2611 has dual led lights while the 2602 only has the 1 led light. The big advantage the new 2602-22 has currently beyond the lower price is the hot special currently from Ohio Power Tool which includes a FREE M18 Sawzall 2620-20 ($199). Obviously that deal is a limited time special, so I would take advantage now. All the Milwaukee Tools are also available for the current Free Shipping offer (Use Coupon Code: AUGUST) from Ohio Power Tool.

If you have any questions on any of the Milwaukee M18 Cordless tools, feel free to call the pros at Ohio Power Tool, 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com. Check back soon for more exciting products coming from the Milwaukee M18 line.

Milwaukee M12 2410-22 Drill/Driver with Free Power Port 2349-20

For a limited time at Ohio Power Tool you can pick up one of the new Milwaukee M12 2410-22 drill/drivers with the 3/8” metal chuck and get a free Power Port 2349-20 ($149 total). This is an instant promotion, no mail-in rebates but supplies are extremely limited. The Power Port is an incredibly convenient little device to have; it can charge a dead cell phone, camera, ipod or other small devices using a car charger or USB. Read reviews on the Power Port from ToolMonger & ToolSnob they both seem to really like it and everyone loves the 2410-22 drills. The reviews we have been getting back from users on these new M12 Drills have been really strong and that is from professional electricians, plumbers, contractors, etc.

The 2410-22 with free Power Port can also be applied towards the Free Shipping promotion which lasts all August and can be applied to any Milwaukee Tools. If you have any questions about any Milwaukee Tools contact the pros at Ohio Power Tool 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com they are happy to help.

M12 M-Spector AV vs Ridgid Micro Explorer (Preliminary)

Just announced, Milwaukee will be coming out with two models of the M-Spector AV, the 2311-21 (17mm head) and 2312-21 (9.5mm head). The M-Spector AV is designed to compete directly with the Ridgid SeeSnake Micro Explorer which has been a tremendous success. The M-Spector AV features match up with the Explorer including 3.5” screen with 320x240 resolution. Both have the ability to record voice over videos, the Milwaukee does comes with a 2GB memory card vs the Ridgid with a small internal memory and mail away to get a Free 2GB card (but $9.95 anywhere). The Milwaukee unit has the ability to rotate live or captured images but it does not mention anything about digital self leveling which is a huge feature of the Ridgid Explorer. The Explorer also has expansion slots which could include upgrades for thermal imaging at some point down the road which I am not sure the Milwaukee offers. Pricing information is not available yet, I imagine it will be in line with the Explorer’s price of $690 or perhaps below. The M-Spector AV is also part of the Milwaukee M12 line, one of the fastest growing and most successful cordless power tool lines on the market today.

I imagine most plumbers will stick with the Ridgid product for the digital self leveling and the fact that it works with the Ridgid MicroDrain to go through toilet traps. That being said the reason the Ridgid Explorer has been so successful is that it has opened up so many new markets. From HVAC, remodelers, electricians, mechanics, inspection, safety, maintenance staff to Biologists studying prairie dogs in Wyoming, the audience is wide open for these new borescope cameras.

Ridgid SeeSnake DVDPak – LCD vs OLED

The DVDPak monitor and DVD recording units are available and shipping now! Super news, however there are 4 model options to choice from and you might want to spend a minute to make sure to get the right one for you. The big decision is LCD vs OLED screen. The LCD screen is larger at 5.7” vs OLED which is 4.3”. Both units are priced the same so you would think it’s a no brainer right. However OLED has higher resolution (480x272 OLED vs 320x240 LCD) but this also means the screen ration is slightly wider. I don’t know if there is possible visibility loss from the camera but traditional screens are 640x480 the same ratio as LCD screen. That would lead me to believe if there were image cutoff or stretching it would occur on the OLED (this would be a very minor effect). The OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) is the newer technology and is in debate on whether it will take over LCD as the new TV technology. For this application however the OLED has a big advantage in that it can operate in temperatures from -30f to 130f which is huge if you are going to leave this monitor in the truck during winter nights or summer days. The choice is yours, choose wisely.

All the units feature full SeeSnake controls on the monitor, the ability to fully power any size SeeSnake camera reel from the microDRAIN 32663 to a 325’ self-leveling SeeSnake Plus. The units also features the new line trace technology which allows you to energize the entire camera and trace the full path of the camera (not just the head) using Ridgid locating equipment.

Ohio Power Tool has all 4 models available OLED 32923, OLED w/battery 33203, LCD 32673 & LCD w/battery 33198. If you get the unit by without batteries now and decide later you want to add the Ridgid batteries & charger, no problem. As always the Ridgid experts at Ohio Power Tool are happy to work with you to configure the right SeeSnake system and answer any questions you might have. If you are in the area all these units will be available to demo Friday August 14th at the Ridgid Roadshow in Columbus, Ohio.

Bosch Compact Combo – Impactor & Drill/Driver CLPK23-180 - $219

This deal is for the CLKP23-180 which is pretty awesome considering the Impactor alone with 2 SlimPak batteries typically costs more. A little late to the 18V lithium ion playing field Bosch is making up for it with arguably some of the best new 18 volt lithium tools around. Each tool is typically equal to or more powerful than competitions, advanced motor protection features and the only 18 volt system that allows the SlimPaks & FatPaks to work on every tool in the line up; all lead to these 18v as a great option. There is also a combo kit with an Impactor & Hammer Drill CLPK22-180 for $335 which includes 2 FatPak batteries.

Check out all the latest Bosch 18V Lithium Ion Tools at Ohio Power Tool. Also the 18V line up is compatible with the cordless Rotozip tool (checkout the video on that tool on Youtube).  If you have any questions about these tools please call Ohio Power Tool ay 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com. Remember these are limited time specials, act fast to ensure current pricing.

Ridgid Reputation Roadshow – Really Nice Deals

There are a lot of reasons to come checkout the Ridgid Road Show at anyone of the stops on their nationwide tour. There will be several knowledgeable Ridgid employees on hand to answer questions, train on equipment and demo the newest products. You will get free Ridgid products like tee shirts and hats with additional chances to win prizes such as a Micro SeeSnake. There will be a Ridgid Calendar Girl to meet and have sign your Ridgid Calendar, CJ Perry will be at the Ohio Power Tool Event, with different models at each stop. There will also be Free Lunch and who doesn’t love free food. I’ve seen two grown men put on dresses & wigs and race each other on ice in front of 10,000+ for free pizza, at a hockey game. All you need to do for this free food is stop by the Roadshow between 11am-2pm.

As if all this wasn’t good enough to get you to come to Ohio Power Tool in 3 weeks (Friday, August 14th) there are also some amazing deals on all Ridgid Products. Ohio Power Tool is supporting this event with some really nice specials such as a limited number of FREE Wet/Dry vacs (model 96877 above) with any order over $250, nearly $80 in free goods, instantly. For larger orders the deals look just as good and leasing options are also available through 3rd parties working with Ohio Power Tool specifically on the Ridgid Roadshow event. An example I saw for a short term lease payment was around $300/month for a Full Size SeeSnake & Scout Locator.

These deals are only good the day of the event however it is highly recommended that you call Ohio Power Tool and pre-order your Ridgid Products now, so the products will actually be in-stock the day of the show. Even the $250 orders should be pre-ordered if you are hoping to get one of the FREE wet/dry vacs.  Lease options can take up to a week to setup so there is no time like the present. Call Ohio Power Tool at 800-242-4424 or email Sales@ohiopowertool.com for more information on the Ridgid Roadshow event and specials.

Bosch Diamond Hole Saws with Autostart for Tile & Stone

Bosch isn’t the first company to introduce a diamond grit hole saw however they are the industry’s first to have AutoStart. The AutoStart feature is basically a carbide tipped pilot that compresses just enough to start the hole. Once the hole is started the bit is removed and the hole saw can cut through the material be it porcelain, marble, granite, tile or glass. The competitors hole saws traditionally have problems walking when trying to start the hole, scratching up the surfaces and since the saw starts at an edge and not centered they potentially can move the hole. With the Bosch diamond hole saws there is much less likelihood of damaging high priced materials, potentially saving a fair amount of time & money.

These new Bosch Diamond Hole Saws will be available on Ohio Power Tool in individual sizes from 3/16” to 4-1/8” at very reasonable prices, ranging from $10-$65. There will also be complete kits available with 7 piece HDG7 ($161.65) & 11 piece HDG11 ($239.70). The new hole saws will of course work on the Bosch Quick Change System which has become incredibly popular and is the same system the Bosch Carbide & Bi-metal holes saws use. For more info read the full Bosch press release below.

New Ridgid 118 AUTOFEED Cutter with Ratchet Handle

The Ridgid Model 118 Close Quarter AUTOFEED Cutter 86127 ($23.57) was recently introduced which improves on the previous cutter designs by incorporating AUTOFEED. This feature automatically continues to tighten as the unit turns after the knob is tightened just once. This feature is ideal for tight spaces but actually very helpful anywhere. The model 118 is designed for use on copper, aluminum and brass with capacity ranging from ¼” to 1-1/8”.

Ridgid has again improved upon this design by incorporating a ratcheting handle. The model 118 cutter attaches to the handle but can still be removed and used without. Together they can fit into extremely tight spaces and with the ratcheting action operate with as little as 10 degrees of movement. The New model 118 w/ Handle 32573 is only a few dollars more at $29.57.

If you have any questions about any of the Ridgid Cutters or other Ridgid plumbing equipment contact the guys at Ohio Power Tool either by phone 800-242-4424 or by email at sales@ohiopowertool.com. Also don’t forget if you are going to be in Ohio Friday, August 14th to check out the Ridgid Roadshow. It will be a great chance to play with all the new Ridgid Plumbing Tools, meet a calendar girl, get some free lunch and take advantage of some really great special promotions at the show for that day only.

CJ Perry – Ridgid Calendar Girls 2009

An update on the Ridgid Roadshow stop for Columbus, Ohio on Friday, August 14th. Possibly the most important detail for some… Who is the Ridgid Calendar Girl that will be there? It has been confirmed CJ Perry (January/February 2009) will be at Ohio Power Tool signing free Ridgid calendars. I googled her and found her Model Mayhem profile. Apparently she is also very accomplished in all types of dance and being insanely hot is just a way to pay the bills. Below is a little about her and a youtube video of her “Reel”. We look forward to having her out to visit.

A little about myself, I am Portuguese but grew up in a little country called Latvia which is the Former Soviet Union. That is where I got my professional ballet training and danced with the Latvian National Ballet Company and a Professional Modern Dance company starting at the age of 14. At 17 I moved to NYC where I danced with Ballet Hispanico and Alvin Ailey. Major in Dance at Florida State University in Dance and Acting.

In College I started break dancing which lead me to tour and work with artist such as Keri Hilson, T.I, Rich Boy, Akon, Bow Wow and Paula Deanda.

I love modeling, singing, acting and dancing and take my career very seriously. I am very passionate about my work and I am easy to work with!

Ridgid 65S Stainless Steel 1/4"-2 5/8" Tube Cutter 31803

The new 65S stainless steel tubing cutter from Ridgid can handle from ¼ - 2 5/8” stainless tube. This cutter has been designed specifically for stainless so it’s built to do the tough cutting.  Available now from Ohio Power Tool the 65S (Ridgid 31803) is on sale for $62.92. This is a great addition to the hand tubing cutters, featuring similar improvements as the very popular 35S (Ridgid 29963) stainless steel tubing cutter that can handle ¼ - 1 3/8” tubing. Official Ridgid release info below.

RIDGID is proud to continue its tradition of delivering the most innovative products in the market by introducing the 65S Quick-Acting Tubing Cutter. The 65S has been designed to optimize cutting performance on Stainless Steel Tube and build on our successful line of cutters for a wide variety of pipe, tube types and sizes.

The 65S features six individual bearings that replace traditional rollers and a specially-designed heavy duty cutter wheel with bearings to create a smoother, faster cut. The oversized, easy-to-grip, X-CEL® knob is especially helpful for easier and quicker adjustments while cutting tube. This tool works for you as it fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, while rotating the cutter around the tube, making a more precise cut. Lastly, the X-CEL wheel pin means a quick and easy, no-tools-required wheel change on the job site.

New M12 LED Work Light 49-24-0146

Another addition the ever expanding Milwaukee M12 Tool line is the LED work light 49-24-0146 ($39). The xenon incandescent M12 work light 49-24-0145 ($19) will still be available, you will simply now have a choice between the two. Both models share a similar design with 90 degree movable head and magnet for hands free work. The new LED M12 is promising double the run of the traditional M12 flashlight however it is also packing double the price. The battery is an LEDs so traditionally lasts 10x longer as well as giving a more natural white light (5600K).

It’s a tough call price vs runtime, you will need to make that decision for your own but I am happy we at least now have the option. Check out all the Milwaukee M12 tools at Ohio Power Tool.

Ridgid Upgrade - Microsite

Ridgid has recently introduced several new Seesnake Inspection monitors, dvd recorders and reels with several more on the way. We had previously posted some information about these new items but Ridgid has also created a great microsite (www.RidgidUpgrade.com) just for these new products with additional pictures, videos, PDFs, specs and more.

Some of the new items are in-stock and available now but we are still waiting on the DVDPak & MicroDRAIN. You can pre-order both items from Ohio Power Tool and will get them as soon as they are released without worry of running out of stock and backorders.

If videos aren’t good enough and you want to see the real deal in action there is always the Ridgid Roadshow which is currently traveling around the country, showing off all the new and existing equipment. All this plus there will be free lunch and Ridgid Girls. Mark your calendars for Friday, August 14th when the show stops at Ohio Power Tool in Columbus.

Detection Tools: M12 Sub-Scanner vs DMD4K vs D-Tect 100

The Milwaukee M12 Sub-Scanner 2290-21 is due out in July and will be able to detect wood studs, pipes, AC wires and rebar in concrete up to 6” deep. Currently the closest competing product would be the Bosch DMD4k Multi-Detector which can also detect various types of materials but only detect rebar in concrete 4” deep. The design of the Milwaukee is also much easier for scanning large areas with the 4 wheel design, it will role across a surface with ease, perfect for mapping out & drilling large areas of concrete.

The M12 Sub-Scanner looks very much like another Bosch detection tool I found on the German site called the D-Tect 100 Wallscanner (see here http://www.wallscanner.de/). This gadget shares the 4 wheel design of the Milwaukee Sub-Scanner but has a much larger display which displays the objects graphically similar to how a fish finder works. It gives a very good representation of where objects are, how deep and continues to show items you already passed over. This product of course is not available in the US and there are no expected dates but hopefully we will see this item in the US down the road.

How to Cut Floor Tile with Rotozip Tools

I recently saw a demo of the new Rotozip Tile-Dock and CR18L Cordless Rotozip, which uses the Bosch 18v Litheon batteries. There were several things I though were interesting about the demo starting with the Tile-Dock TD1-10. I’ve never seen anything like it, although I’m not a professional floor guy, but the few tiling projects I’ve done this would have been big help. Lightweight easy to carry, stores all the accessories and has a dust collection hook-up which is becoming more and more a priority these days with new laws and regulations. Obviously the Tile Dock could be used with any tool cutting tile such as a diamond grit hole saw or diamond sawzall blade.

The Rotozip CR18L had some nice features as well. I love that it uses the Bosch 18v Lithium batteries because the last thing anyone wants is another battery system, this way you’ll always have extra batteries ready. Also the fact that the diamond X-bits don’t need to be cooled with water is very convenient with a lot less setup / cleanup. This is not the tool for making the full tile strait cuts but almost every job is going to require several curved cuts, notch outs and/or holes made. This is a great solution.

If you have any questions about any of the Rotozip tools or accessories you can contact Ohio Power Tool at 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com. Special thanks to Dave for doing the demo a second time so I could capture it for the YouTube Video below. Please give it a good rating so he’ll feel good about himself and come back to do more videos we can all enjoy.

At a lower price the 2266-20 Temp-Gun has a temp range from -20 to 932 F, a 12 to 1 distance to spot ratio and a slide rail system that allows accessories such as the voltage detector / light tool to be attached and used as part of the Temp-Gun. This gun meets and/or beats basically every competitor even up to the $200 price range and with the added accessories can offers features well beyond anything else.

M12 Laser Temp-Gun 2277-21

The M12 2277-21 Temp-Gun is truly in a class by itself. With an expanded temperature range of -40 to 1472 F and a 40 to 1 distance to spot ratio, you get improved safety and accuracy in even the most demanding situations. The M12 unit also features built-in LED work light and non-contact voltage detection. The cherry on top is that the M12 Temp-Gun 2277-21 features humidity and dew point measurements. If you currently own other M12 tools and don’t need the additional M12 battery, case and charger, you can also get the M12 Temp-Gun as a tool only, see 2277-20.

Hopefully this helps clarify the difference between the Milwaukee Temp-Guns. These tools are not only convenient and a really cool technology they are also an important safety tool which might warn of potential electrical problems. If you have any questions about the new Milwaukee Test & Measure tools please feel free to email sales@ohiopowertool.com and the guys at Ohio Power Tool will be happy to help.

Milwaukee Test & Measure Tools - Multimeters & Forkmeters

As you may have already seen from the two posts yesterday Milwaukee has a lot of new test & measure tools coming in July. Just to clarify these are not some re-branded cheap import items painted red. Milwaukee has been working on these new tools for some time and has hired industry leaders, in some case from top competitors, to build these new test & measuring tools from the ground up. The group systematically looked at each tool individually, compared it with all the competition and found new ways to improve the functionality through extensive interviews with real professionals in the trade.

Digital Multimeter 2217-20

The new digital multimeter 2217-20 from Milwaukee has several features most competitor models do not currently offer. One problem Milwaukee looked to combat is the “Ghost Voltage” phenomenon where energized lines create a magnetic field affecting other wires in the bundle resulting in higher voltage readings than actually exist in the individual wires. The Lo-Z feature eliminates this problem and gives accurate readings to the user. In addition to stronger more durable housing, easier one handed controls and larger clear displays the 2217-20 also features a slide rail system to add proprietary accessories, such as the Volt Detector / Work Light mentioned in our previous post, for additional functionality.

Fork Meters – Electrician 2205-20 & HVAC/R 2206-20

Both of the new Folk Meters incorporate several features most competitors do not such as non-contact voltage detection and LED work lights. Some differences in the two models are the 2205-20 electrician’s model features the Lo-Z measurement, mentioned above to eliminate “Ghost Voltage”, while the HVAC/R 2206-20 feature DC microamps & contact temperature reading more commonly used in those industries.

All 3 of these tools are part of the Milwaukee Alkaline Test & Measure tools which basically means they use standard batteries vs the M12 Test & Measure tools also available. If you have any questions about any of the new tools contact the pros at Ohio Power Tool at 800-242-4424.

Milwaukee M12 Clamp-Gun & Alkaline Clamp Meters

As part of the new Milwaukee Line of Test & Measurement Tools there are 4 different options for Clamp Meters. The M12 Clamp-Gun meters are two of the new meters that work with the M12 battery system. The gun design makes the display easier to read the display in many situations. The 2238-21 unit is specifically designed for HVAC/R use with the main differences of Amps AC = 600, Microamps DC = 600 & Contact Temperature reading. The 2239-21 unit which is designed for Electricians features Amps AC = 1000, Amps DC = 1000 and Frequency readings. These M12 Clamp-guns come with a charger, battery and case but are also available as tool only options for those that already have existing M12 tools and charger - 2238-20 HVAC & 2239-20 Electrical.

The other 2 Clamp Meters have a more tradition design that work off standard alkaline batteries. The HVAC/R model 2236-20 and the Electrical model 2237-20 are more similar than the M12 Clamp-Guns with the only difference that the HVAC unit has Contact Temperature reading while the Electrical unit features Frequency reading.

All 4 new Milwaukee Clamp Meters feature a LED work light, true RMS, Continuity and Capacitance. The difference between the M12 & Alkaline other than the obvious shape most notably include CAT III 1000V / CAT IV 600V (M12) vs CAT III 600V (Alkaline) and Jaw Size, 1.57” (M12) vs 1.3” (Alkaline).

All the new Milwaukee Test & Measuring tools are expected out sometime in July 2009 after the current M12 Free Tool promotions have ended but it is possible new promotions could be available at that time, although we haven’t heard anything yet. PRE-SALES on the units are available now for Ohio Power Tool. If you have any questions on any of the new units for Milwaukee Test & Measure Tools you can email sales@ohiopowertool.com and they will do their best to get an answer for you.

Milwaukee M12, M18 & V28 Free Tool Deals

Typically Milwaukee will run a promotion for a free tool or battery deal a few times a year with a lot of success. Currently they are running this deal on all their cordless tools simultaneously as well as launching several new products.

Milwaukee M12 Free Tool Deal

The M12 deal applies to most tools and combo kits in the line up although I did not see the M-spector or Micro Driver on the list. This deal is available until June 30th.  Milwaukee has also included 2 new products that work with this deal, the 2410-22 3/8” M12 drill/driver and 2320-21 M12 2-beam plumb laser level. More info to come on those...  There are 5 available FREE items to choose from including the new (available in a few days) M12 Power Port 2349-20. The most value for this deal would be the Hackzall 2420-20 ($110). – M12 Tools & Rebate PDF

Milwaukee M18 Free Tool Deal

This deal was available last month and runs through June 30th along with the Milwaukee M12 Deal. This deal includes almost all the M18 tool kits and combos except the compact kits like the 2691-22 which is only $199 anyway. The 2680-20 Grinder ($219) is probably the best value in the deal but another tool maybe more useful in your situation. – M18 Tools & Rebate PDF

Milwaukee V28 Free Tool Deal

This deal is a little more limited than the M12 or M18 deals. It only applies to the 4-tool combo, 3-tool combo and V28 Hammer Drill. The free tool option is also more limited to the ½” square impact, V28 battery or V28 wet/dry vac. The best deal here is the Impact ($271) but with a new combo kit a 3rd battery is also a good choice. I’m not sure who would choice the vacuum as they typically retail for under $100 but these are great add-ons in specific applications. – V28 Tools & Rebate PDF

The reason these deals are so rich is simple. Statistically people don’t take the time to send in the mail-in rebate. Commonly 25% or less of mail-in rebates from tool vendors get used. Why??? I have no clue but if you take advantage you can potentially see up to 40% back in FREE TOOLS. Think of it this way, Milwaukee is putting 10% of all sales back into a rebate pot. If only 1 in 4 take advantage, that 1 guy gets a much bigger deal and their marketing teams get to field day. Be that guy, send in the rebate and get awesome stuff free.

8 NEW MILWAUKEE TEST & MEASURE TOOLS

Today Milwaukee released a handful of press releases talking about their new Test & Measure tools. It appears some of the tools will be apart of the M12 cordless line, while other tools will use ordinary alkaline batteries and some tools will be available with both configurations. These tools are aimed to compete directly with products from manufacturers like Fluke. A great fit for Milwaukee Tools who have already aimed the M12 tools at plumbers, electricians and HVAC users with tools like the M-Spector and Hackzall.  Check back soon for updates and products test on all the new goodies. Read the full press release below:

Bosch Tools – Wireless Charging Cordless Power Tools

As mentioned in the last post, Bosch was nice enough to invite me to their US headquarters last week to check out the recently launched products and stuff being launched in the very near future. Some of the stuff was top secret so unfortunately I probably shouldn’t mention anything about time travel, teleportation or cold fusion power tools, I may or may not have seen. We did get a chance to play with a very interesting technology for powering cordless devices without a typical charger. The technology was launched at CES over a month ago but it was really impressive to see in action.

You may have seen a similar technology for powering cell phones and iPods which will likely become very common within the next year or so. Through a joint effort partnership with Fulton Innovations, Energizer, Motorola, Bosch and several other companies a stronger system has been developed for powering products that require a much higher amount of energy like kitchen appliances, laptops and Bosch Power Tools. Simply set an eCoupled device on the plate and it will automatically detect the device and power it with the correct amount of energy. Several completely different items with different power requirements can all be run/charged simultaneously without a problem.

The system for Bosch Power Tools would be built into the batteries, so the tools will most likely remain the same and while new tool kits may feature the technology it is likely an upgrade kit will be available for existing tools. So don’t worries, your new 18V Litheon tools are not going to be obsolete anytime soon. To see how the system works checkout this youtube video of working drill and combo kit units.

Bosch Hole Saw Deals & Free Dare Devil Spade Bits

While supplies last, you can get a free set of Bosch Dare Devil Spade Bits with any Bosch Hole Saw kit purchased. The free set DSB5006P includes 6 of the most popular sizes (3/8”, ½”, 5/8”, ¾”, 7/8” & 1”) as well as a durable carry case. If you have not had the pleasure to use the new Dare Devil Spade Bits, these are unlike anything you have drilled with before. Checkout this Youtube video below for more info on the Bosch Dare Devil Bits.

The Bosch Hole Saw Kits all feature the Bosch Quick Change Universal System which makes switching sizes a tool free task that takes only a few seconds. Simply release the mandrel and the saw is quickly changed out. The system can use all major brands of current hole saws so if you already have several hole saws no problem they will work with the Bosch kits. The system also features an enlarger adaptor (sold separately) which allows for very precise enlarging of existing holes.

In addition to the free Dare Devil bit set, all the hole saw kits on Ohio Power Tool are priced very competitively but for a limited time there is also special pricing on the Bi-Metal 25 piece Hole saw kit HB25M for $108, below all national competitors at the time of this post (according to Google Shopping). There are only a limited number of Free Dare Devils are available and special pricing on the 25 piece kit won’t last long.

The video below shows the Bosch Carbide and Milwaukee Big Hawg hole saws. These two look similar but are not intended for the same tasks. The Bosch Carbide can go through cement, wood, plastic and other materials while the Milwaukee is build specifically to go through wood. If you are looking for a wood only hole saw the Milwaukee is much cheaper and quicker. If you on the other hand are looking for the most versatile hole saw on the market today the Bosch Carbide Hole Saws might be right up your alley.

Back for 2009 the Ridgid Video Contest is open and taking submissions until July 31st. That gives you a few months to write the screen play for the greatest plumber adventure ever, hire A-list celebrity actors, build elaborate futuristic sets, tie it all together with amazing CGI effects and submit the video… or get a case of beer, a few buddies, a video camera and give it your best shot on a Sunday afternoon. Either way it should be fun to make.

Grand prize is $2500 in new Ridgid gear which is perfect because it times up almost exactly with the release of the New microDRAIN & DVDPak both in that price range. Top 5 semi-finalists get an all expense paid trip to Cleveland, Ohio for the Ridgid Round-Up and maybe more importantly you get bragging rights on the Ridgid Forum. If you have no interest in entering the contest no worries but you can still enjoy the videos from 2008, which you can watch on the contest site and check back in a few months for the 2009 new ones.

Bosch Multi-Construction Hammer Drill Bits Go through Everything!

These new light blue drill bits work in your standard ½” chuck hammer drill. I have been a fan of the Bosch Blue Granite bits which has a similar carbide tip and are great for going through not only concrete but also masonry, stone, tile and other similar materials. The new Bosch Multi-Construction Bits go even further, in addition to concrete, masonry, stone & tile the new bits also go through metal, plastic, wood and even glass! Basically all the materials you might want to drill it can handle it. Ideal for say attaching a wood stud to concrete, pre-drill a hole into both at once without switching the tool or bits, big time saver.

The Multi-Construction bit also steals some technology from the Bosch Tile & Glass Bits and will make perfect holes in ceramic tile or glass. The bits work in both rotary or hammer mode depending on the material you are going into. It might get ugly if you are in hammer mode when you try going into glass for the first time so make sure you check your tool.

Checkout Ohio Power Tool if you are interested ordering some of these new drill bits, they are in-stock and available to ship now! Read the full Bosch Press Release below.

Power Tool & Equipment Rentals

Renting vs Buying

It can be difficult to predict the future and determine what is going to be best for your needs in the long run. There are a few basic things to look at which will help guide you in making the right financial decision for what is right for you personally or your business.

Frequency – How often will you need this item, what is the likelihood the usage could change in the future?
Urgency – When you need this item is it for something urgent or can usage be planned and therefore group projects together.
Versatility – Can this equipment do multiple jobs; are there different options that you might want down the road?
Availability – Is this item even available in your area to rent? It might answer your question real quick if you can’t even rent it.
Maintenance – Do you have someone to maintain/repair the equipment, what are the typical repair costs; could there be problems if the item sat dormant for the winter?
New Business – Is there additional business you could do if you had this new equipment? Are you missing opportunity on current jobs where you refer business to others?
Technology – How quickly does the technology change? In 2-4 years will something better be available and you will need to upgrade?

Using Rentals to Grow Your Business

Renting is a great way to expand your business without the costs of additional equipment. For instance if a plumber who owns his own business wants to do pipe and drain inspections he might look at adding a Ridgid SeeSnake for a cost of $4000-$10,000. Then the risk is the equipment might go unused for weeks at a time until he builds that part of his business. On the other hand he could offer these services and simply rent a SeeSnake (from $125) as needed until the frequency goes up and buying becomes more attractive. Additionally rental equipment is a great way to supplement your current inventory. You may already own a mag drill but an upcoming job requires a few hundred holes drilled. It might make sense to rent a second or third drill for the job and speed up that step of the process. Often times this will more than pay for itself when consider man hours and project bottle necks.

Financing & Economic Slow Downs

During slower economic times it can become harder to secure financing and/or justify purchasing new equipment but the absolute worst thing you could do is turn away business. Shop your local rental house and know what inventory is available and what the rates are so you can speak confidently about your capabilities and build those rates right into any quotes. Also most places will offer discounts if you are planning to rent the tools several times per month.

March Rental Madness Deal – Ohio Power Tool

If you are near the Columbus, Ohio area and looking to rent any tools or equipment in the near future you might want to check out rental tools & equipment from Ohio Power Tool before the end of the month. Any rental items checked out before the last day of the month will be eligible for 25% back in free good which can be used on any new tools or accessories. At minimum it should cover the costs of any accessories you might need, such as saw blades or drill bits but the savings can add up quickly into free tools.

Outside Central Ohio you can still rent from Ohio Power Tool on a weekly and monthly basis if you would like to take advantage of the 25% in free goods offer. Shipping rates will apply so some items may not be cost effective but on weekly or monthly rental there are defiantly items which can be pretty reasonable to have shipped direct to your jobsite. If you have any questions call 800-242-4424 or email sales@ohiopowertool.com.

How Do I See Past the Toilet Trap? ...microDrain

Our hopes for the original Ridgid Seesnake Micro were crushed when we found out it couldn’t get past the traps. When we heard the 9.5mm head was coming there was again discussion it would be more flexible and it would do the job but again hopes and dream down the drain. Then news of the microExplorer… surely this would be the answer to our prayers but with all the great new features it still could not pass the trap test... until now.

Finally Ridgid has solved the problem once and for all. Coming this summer you can get your hands on a simple portable machine that will take you to the promise land on the other side of that trap. It is called the Ridgid microDrain and you can see the video of it in action below (Ohio Power Tool will have pre-ordering available several months before its release). It will work with the Ridgid microExplorer which means you can capture pictures and video onto your SD card. It also means you have another reason to pickup the Explorer now if you haven’t already got one. The new microDrain is basically a 30ft push cable on a light weight reel (8.6 lbs together) with a 22mm head, small enough for toilet traps and 1-1/4” lines. The Explorer attaches perfectly for a very compact nice package which will be very easy to carry around.

Ridgid Micro Explorer

This makes me even more excited about the future investment Ridgid is putting into the Micro Explorer product. We still haven’t seen any updates about what is to come for the expansion slots but the hope is we could see thermal, infrared or other imaging technologies available which could greatly expand the functionality of these cameras. Obviously that means the Explorer is going to be around for several years to come in its current form so no excuses not to get one.

Milwaukee M18 Grinder & Jig Saw

When the Milwaukee M18 line of tools was launched last year there was the promise of a cordless grinder and jigsaw coming first quarter 2009. True to their word these two new tools should be available very shortly. Both new tools are available as tool only or in a kit with 2 XC batteries, case & charger. The M18 Grinder/Cut-Off 2680-22 features many of the same advances as their new corded grinders including 4-pole motor, overload protection, debris baffles, tool free burst resistant guard and the only cordless grinder on the market with a paddle switch design. The M18 Jig Saw 2545-22 was designed from the ground up to be one of the most powerful cordless jig saws on the market. We are looking forward to both of these much needed new additions and can’t wait for additional cordless tools coming later this year.

Both of these new M18 tools are available now at Ohio Power Tool for pre-order and should be arriving in stores in the near future. Video demos on both of these tools are already in the works, so stay tuned.

New Ridgid LCDPak Monitor – Cordless or AC Power

Recently Ridgid revealed a new SeeSnake monitor which is more compact and has the option to power your complete system with 1 or 2 Ridgid 18V Li-ion batteries or a standard AC plug. I think the monitor makes a lot of sense if you could use a cordless system but don’t really need to record every time. There is a video out function on the unit which could be used with a DVD recorder or Laptop but would be more cumbersome than one of the other all-in-one units. There will most likely be add-on recording devices coming soon.

Ohio Power Tool is currently selling the LCDPak Monitor Only for $2635.08 available now and LCDPak Monitor with 2 batteries & charger for $2968.73 available in March. Important to know the monitor will not charge the batteries when plugged in, you will still need to use the charger separately. If you need a new monitor right away but still want the battery option you can order the LCDPak monitor only 31763 now and get the 2 batteries & charger kit (32648 available in March) separately for $333.66 when available; almost the exact difference in price anyway. As always you can call 800-242-4424 with any questions.

Checkout the video below for more details.

- Lithium-ion Battery Power allows you to run your complete system for up to 4 hours. (including Seesnake reel)
- Reduced Size frees up truck space and makes it easier to transport to the job.
- New Integrated Line Trace Feature allows you to trace the push cable with your RIDGID® locator (requires transmitter)
- Display: 10.4" Color LCD (26.4 cm)
- Resolution: 640 x 480
- Power Source: 1 or 2 RIDGID® 18V Li-ion Batteries or AC Plug
-

Free Ridgid Micro Explorer 30063

The Ridgid microEXPLORER has been one of the most popular new tools in recent months. Never before have you had so much functionality in such a small inexpensive piece of equipment. This should be a standard piece of hardware for most tradesmen. Unfortunately it will not replace many of the jobs of the bigger 200’ SeeSnakes when it comes to seeing in lines and locating the problem.

The good news is you can now get a brand new Ridgid microEXPLORER 30063 for free. The current sale price on Ohio Power Tool is $690 plus an additional $102 for the 9.5mm head. If you purchase a Mini-SeeSnake Plus and LCD Monitor with DVD 23888 you will get the Explorer and additional 9.5mm head for free. Call the experts if you have any questions 800-242-4424.

New Portable Milwaukee Band Saw 6232-6N

Milwaukee Tool just announced the next generation of portable band saws. The new Milwaukee Band Saw 6232-6N is 40% faster than the previous Milwaukee models and 20% faster than the closest competitor, the Dewalt DWM120K. The Milwaukee motor was updated from a 6 amp to a 10.5 amp motor and is now the most powerful on the market. The improvements don’t stop there, with aluminum motor housing, better saw balance, 2 finger trigger, variable speed dial, improved blade protection and new bearings this is a very solidly built band saw.

The band saw’s deep cutting capacity is 4-7/8” however it can cut up to 6” round pipe when rotating. The improved T handle grip not only allows for comfortable operation but also allows the tool to lock into a vise for stationary cutting. Another nice feature for those who maintain many of these units and are thinking about upgrading some of them, is that up to 80% of the parts are interchangeable. This means if you have brushings, pulleys or other parts they will work in the new & old models.

To properly introduce the new Milwaukee Band Saw 6232-6N Ohio Power Tool is giving away a brand new Milwaukee 4.5” rattail grinder 6122-30 ($119 sale price) with each band saw purchased however supply is extremely limited with 3 max per order. The grinders will be shipped with the units, no mail-in rebates to worry about. The Milwaukee 6232-2N is available now for pre-sale at $299 and should be in-store before Febuary 6th

Milwaukee Tool is serious about proving themselves in the metalworking tool category. Within the next month or so Milwaukee will also introduce several new 5”, 6”, 7” & 9” grinders to accompany the new 4.5” grinders available now. All the new Milwaukee metalworking grinders are intended to not only compete with the likes of Bosch, Makita and Metabo in this category but in fact become the preferred brand for users.

Ridgid SuperFreeze & Pipe Thawers

When it comes to pipe maintenance the easiest thing to do is obviously shut the entire system down and work at your leisure to fix any problems. Of course this not always an option. In some cases work needs to be done without shutting off the water supply. In these cases a very handy tool to have around is the Ridgid SuperFreeze. The SuperFreeze pipe freezer unit allows you to keep the water system operating while making repairs. The RIDGID SF-2500 is a mini-refrigeration unit that circulates self-contained refrigerant to its aluminum freeze heads. These heads form ice plug in as little as 5 minutes in copper tube up to 2 1/2" or steel pipe up to 2". The ice plugs remain frozen while the unit is on allowing ample time to repair any sprinkler head, valve, leaking pipe, etc.

The Ridgid pipe thawers units KT-190 & KT-200 do just the opposite; they thaw pipes that may have frozen. Recently we’ve seen a bit of a spike in interest for these units with colder weather and ice storms shutting off power in some areas. Not a good combination for pipes full of water. Thawing Units provide continuous heating to quickly thaw 1/2" to 1 1/2" frozen metal pipes. With these lightweight, versatile units, there is no need to dig or tear apart walls. Simply attach the clamps to the metal pipe on each side of the frozen section and the pipe is thawed within minutes.

Both of these types of units can be very handy for any contractors. For more information on these or any other Ridgid Plumbing Tools contact the experts at Ohio Power Tool (800-242-4424) and they will be happy to help you find the right tool for the job.
