Bosch 18V Brushless Angle Grinders GWS18V-45 vs Corded

We had a great time playing with different Bosch Angle Grinders in the metal working room at the Idea Foundry! We took some time to discuss the new GWS18V-45C/PSC Brushless Angle Grinder to see how it matches up to their corded models, such as the 1375A and GWS10-45PD. Also looked at the new Bluetooth connectivity options available with these new grinders. (more…)

Dust Extractor Testing – Tool Box Buzz, Pro Tool Reviews, Coptool

2017 hepa vacuums

Towards the end of last year when the OSHA silica rules were going into effect we were getting lots of questions about dust extractors specific to Silica, how they are each viewed under OSHA’s Table 1 standards and of course how each performed head to head. At the time there were no head-to-heads out there on these vacs so the Coptool Team got on the case to put together a basic Vacuum Head-to-Head to help users gain more information.

Since our video first aired several manufacturers have made updates to their products with lower prices and/or included HEPA filters which is awesome news for everyone! Also two of our tool reviewing hero’s Pro Tool Reviews and Tool Box Buzz jumped on the case to do their own vacuum comparisons, with some great testing rigs and pointed out some additional information that we might have glossed over. We really think both of these groups do top notch tool test, Clint’s team at Pro Tool Review is always very detailed and Rob’s Crew are mostly professional contractors with some great insights.  (more…)

Jobsite Table Saw Showdown 2018

Table Saw Testing

For this competition we wanted to look at the Top 5 Professional Jobsite Table Saws available today and compare them on Safety, Accuracy, Ease of Use, Power and Value. We only selected units with folding wheeled stands integrated, we did not include any of the “Compact” table saw units that use the folding stands also we drew the line at the top 5 for our test, other good options to consider would be Hitachi, Ridgid and Delta which offer solid units at even lower price points.

Table Saws Comparison

With 5 great competitors in the running some of the rating really comes down to splitting hairs but that’s what we do. Also the big elephant in the room is the SawStop as it’s the only one on the market with “Flesh Detecting” technology. We are really going to look at the saws without putting much emphasis on that feature (No Hot Dogs Were Harmed in the making of this video) there have been dozens of videos & posts on that topic, it is an awesome feature we recommend for everyone but if you are still looking for a table saw we want to focus on the other features.

Contestants:
Bosch Table Saw with Stand 4100-09 ($549)
Dewalt Table Saw with Stand DWE7491RS ($549)
Makita Table Saw with Stand 2705X1 ($749)
SawStop Table Saw with Stand JSS-MCA ($1299)
SkilSaw Table Saw with Stand SPT99-12 ($499) (more…)

Bosch Starlock Oscillating Multi-Tools

GUEST POST – Dwain is one of the experts behind oztooltalk, from Australia . You can find more of their video tool reviews on their Youtube Channel.

Most Coptool readers would know that Bosch and FEIN worked together to create Starlock, an innovative system for attaching oscillating multi-tool (OMT) blades and bits. Currently only Bosch and FEIN tools employ the the Starlock system, though it will undoubtedly start appearing on other brands in the near future.

Tool-less bit changes have already been increasing the flexibility of OMTs for a few years, making tradespeople more likely to use them for multiple tasks (like sanding). But apart from making the blade change even faster, Starlock makes a huge difference because users don’t have to handle the blades. Why is this this useful? Because OMT blades get hot! It’s quite common for users to want to rotate a blade several times, but the hot blades are painful to handle.

Coptool discussed the Starlock system was a while back – (previous coptool post). The new OMTs come in two variations, StarlockPlus and StarlockMax. A summary of the blade compatibility is listed below:

Red vs Green Line Lasers, You Have A Choice

Red vs Green Laser

The battle of Red Laser Vs Green Laser rages on, clearly Green is easier to see with the human eye than Red but there are other factors that need to be considered, mainly cost and runtime. Good news is the cost on green lasers has come down dramatically so it is easier to build lasers such as the Bosch GLL 100 G ($229), the other good news is that Red Line Lasers continue to fall as well with some cheaper options even below $40 like the Bosch GLL 2. This certainly doesn’t make the decisions easier but good news is pretty much anyone can afford a laser level. Runtime is the other important consideration while Bosch does not give their specs, PLS does provide estimates of 35+ hours with PLS180 RED ($282) but only 2-6 hours with PLS180 GREEN ($479) which is probably very similar ratios across other brands.

Bosch Colt Router 1.25 HP Variable Speed GKF125

Bosch Colt GKF125

The Bosch Colt Palm Router for the longest time was really the only trim router you would see out there, people loved it so much we started seeing all sorts of customer adaptations, mini router tables and other accessories people hand built or from 3rd party manufacturer’s. A few years back Makita and Dewalt jumped into game with palm routers with plunge bases and now we even have a 18V cordless versions from Ridgid and Makita XTR01 palm router. Not to be out-done Bosch has now revamped their classic Colt with the new GKF125CE ($129) adding more power with 1.25 HP motor (up from 1.0 HP) but also more control with Soft Start and Constant Response circuitry.

There is also a Kit version GKF125CEK ($139) which adds a straight guide and a case. For more info on the new Colt check out the full Bosch Press Release below. These units should be shipping early November and should be in high demand this Christmas season. Check out all the corded Bosch Routers unfortunately no word yet on an 18V cordless router unit… fingers crossed it will happen at some point. (more…)

Bosch Brushless Grinder GWS18V-125sc

Bosch are making some waves this year, putting out some seriously premium 18v tools. Most importantly they have released their CORE batteries with greatly increased power ouput, enabling a host of more powerful 18v tools. These include their incredible new sabre saw GSA18V-125K, their 1″ Bulldog SDS GHB18V-26K and now their first brushless grinder, the GWS18V-125SC (note that is the European model number, may not be same in the US when released). Bosch claim it has the power of a 1,000W electric grinder when paired with a CORE battery!

2017 Vacuum Comparison Test, OSHA Silica Table 1

Vacuums Comparison Testing

*** Important to note we are not testing if these vacs meet the OSHA Standards, we are only testing usability & performance. We are relying on the manufacturer testing to be accurate in that all 6 competitors do meet the standards!

The new OSHA Silica Standard is officially now a finable offense, having been in effect for over a year already they were not issuing fines before September 23rd, 2017, that has now changed. We have previous covered several topics related to this new standard including What is OSHA Silica Standard, what are steps can you take for your Company Silica Assessments and what is the Difference between Table 1 vs Objective Data testing. This topic is huge and worker safety is extremely important which we could never cover it all but we did want to take a deeper dive into what is one of the most important components, the Dust Extraction Vacuums used as the center piece for many of engineered controls.
