What an amazing display from Makita at the World of Concrete. This is the place where power is defined and why Makita is one of power tools’ leading brands.
We posted this video and received feedback that we can hopefully clear up here. The current Dewalt Flexvolt SDS-MAX in this video is 1-9/16″ with 6.1 JOULES. This new Makita XRH07ZKU($599,bare) is 11.4 JOULES so off the specs alone these results should be in-line. It’s worth mentioning that Dewalt acknowledges these specs and is planning to release another Flexvolt SDS-MAX hammer later this year that will likely be equal or greater (see our Dewalt WOC post). Yesterday our good friend and Skilled Carpenter Rob Robillard from Tool Box Buzz posted this video “Thinking About Learning A Skilled Trade?” which is directed at high school aged kids. College is a fine path for many people but if you’re not sure what you want to do there are a ton of opportunities to make great money in the skilled trades. When taken seriously young apprentices can easily outpace their friends in earning even well after they graduate.
For the parents of these kids here’s another great bit of advice from Mike Rowe, “Stop Lying to your Kids” most parents really push college on their kids but in a lot of cases this is just bad advice. A communications degree with no experience and $80k of debt at 23 years old is not a sure ticket to financial freedom, quite the opposite.
For this competition we wanted to look at the Top 5 Professional Jobsite Table Saws available today and compare them on Safety, Accuracy, Ease of Use, Power and Value. We only selected units with folding wheeled stands integrated, we did not include any of the “Compact” table saw units that use the folding stands also we drew the line at the top 5 for our test, other good options to consider would be Hitachi, Ridgid and Delta which offer solid units at even lower price points.
With 5 great competitors in the running some of the rating really comes down to splitting hairs but that’s what we do. Also the big elephant in the room is the SawStop as it’s the only one on the market with “Flesh Detecting” technology. We are really going to look at the saws without putting much emphasis on that feature (No Hot Dogs Were Harmed in the making of this video) there have been dozens of videos & posts on that topic, it is an awesome feature we recommend for everyone but if you are still looking for a table saw we want to focus on the other features.
The local Wilton rep stopped by the shop and got this bad boy out. It really is a nice piece of equipment. We’re talking just 3 seconds to cut your struts, a 7 second change cycle, and no time de-burring! I mean, if you are hanging miles of struts, you’d be crazy not to look into this.

We of course stopped by the yellow booth at World of Concrete and they had a lot to show off this year. Dewalt is really going after the concrete market with several new products aimed at silica dust collection as well as expanding their Flexvolt cordless offering with some heavy duty tools that can now outperform their corded counter parts.
One of the tools we came to the WOC show to actually try out was the Dewalt Flexvolt 9” Concrete Saw DCS690, we first got a look at it last November at the STAFDA show however they would not let us fire it up inside the clean convention hall. Very impressive unit for going cordless, add one of those backpack water tanks and you could be very dangerous.
Last week was World of Concrete and if you’ve ever been to the show you know there is a ton to see! We are going to spend the next few days breaking down some of the top tool manufacturers starting with our friends at Bosch Power Tools. Some pretty exciting stuff coming in 2018 from Blue team including new lasers, GPS tracking on their tools and more cordless technology.
Outdoor Distance Measuring Laser GLM400 ($229) & GLM400CL ($299, Lithium Pack) these lasers are a first of their kind with a build in camera to see where that laser point is even in outdoor light and/or a further distances. Packed with features we expect these to be available late spring / early summer. Continue reading →
When I was younger all the dads had a mustache, they drank Budweiser and pretty much all had the same leather tool belt. Today there are a lot of options for carrying your tools with you no matter what your trade. The Tool Belt is not dead yet, it’s still the staple for keeping tools close at hand but they have certainly evolved and there are now lots and lots of other options, from tool vests, tool aprons, tool backpacks and much more!
Ergodyne recently launched their tool aprons, the most popular version 22 Pocket Canvas Apron 5704($23) abrasion resistant, pocket for everything and it distributes the weight much better than your standard similarly priced tool belt. Continue reading →
