Using Sugru Rubber to Customize & Fix Stuff

What is Surguexciting new air-curing rubber that can be formed by hand. It bonds to most materials and turns into a strong, flexible silicone rubber overnight. Developed by a team of product designers and materials scientists, sugru’s patented technology is unique in its combination of hand-formability, self-adhesion and flexibility when cured. It feels like modelling clay, and it’s that easy to use too. Once cured, its durable properties mean it’s comfortable in extreme environments from the dishwasher to the ocean to Antarctica.

We got a little sample pack to test out and used it on our metal iPhone case, we wanted to get some wear on it as quickly as possible and nothing gets handled more than our phone. It goes on just like you would expect from old school Play-Doh. We left it over night and just as promised it was cured by morning. The cured form has a soft rubber feel but it is not going anywhere. We left it on for about 2 weeks and did not have any issues with it wearing off at all. We used the bright blue color basically because we knew we were planning to remove it (to see how easy it would come off) but it is available in white, black, blue, red, green among others. There is also a nice page on their website that tells you how to mix colors to form other colors and tints.

When we went to remove the Surgu it came off pretty easy with an utility knife. It took about 3 or 4 passes and we used a very clean surfaced item. This would be near impossible to remove completely from a textured surface so I would be cautious before sticking it on your new SLR camera grip. Also be the shelf life is only a few months so make sure you buy it before the “sell by” date and use it with another few months or the “use by” date.
