Future of Cordless Power Tools, 10.0Ah and Beyond

Future is Here

A couple of years ago we went on a rant Future of Cordless Power Tools, 5.0Ah and Beyond where we predicted a bunch of cordless power tools we’d hope to see in the next couple years and whamo they almost all came true. Cordless SDS-Max hammer, cordless table saw, cordless trim router, cordless miter saws (full size), cordless HEPA vacs, battery to AC power inverters and more are all available at your local tool store today (or very very soon). Clearly we’re not psychic it’s pretty systematic as battery technology improves it’s logical all the next most popular, higher voltage tools will go cordless. So what might be coming next?

We just did a post about some of the new battery cell technology (18650 vs 20700) and how that plays into power tools with LiHD vs FlexVolt vs M18 and others, it got us think again. It seems like if we look 2, 3, 4 more years ahead, assuming the Tesla Giga-Factory continues to comes on line we should expect even bigger leaps forward and lower priced battery packs. We should expect cell improvements to continue on the 20700 standard, the typical 18v battery pack (10 cells) will hopefully be at least 8.0Ah capacity, larger packs 12.0Ah (15 cells), stack multiple packs and you’re talking serious juice, the possibilities are wide open. Bosch Reaxx Strikes Back on Current SawStop Lawsuit

Lawsuit Sawstop vs Bosch

“Patent legal action is far from over” is how the Bosch Press Release below starts. The case is not expected to be over until January 2017 and the “initial determination” still has to undergo review and additional arguments from the parties. When we reported the information from SawStop’s Press Release earlier this week it admittedly sounded very much like judgement had been made and all that was left was to determine the punishment. That is not the case and we would agree with Bosch here, it was definitely a misleading press release. (more…)

Judge Finds Bosch Reaxx Saw Infringes SawStop Patent

SawStop vs Bosch Reaxx

*** 9/15/16 Update – Bosch’s response to the below SawStop Press Release

SawStop just published a press release on Business Wire (see below) announcing that the Judge Thomas B. Pender has confirmed (at least the “Initial Determination”) that the Bosch Reaxx Saw has infringed the SawStop Patent. What does that mean for the Bosch Reaxx Saw, it is unclear at this point, but SawStop is asking ITC to exclude Bosch from bringing the saw into the US, including all parts and cartridges. This certainly looks like SawStop is one step closer to the Bosch Reaxx being dead in the water. If that is the case we would fully expect Bosch Tools to make good on products they have released.

If you are looking for a safer table saw with flesh detecting technology it looks like the SawStop Table Saws maybe the only option for the foreseeable future. Good news is they offer a full range of table saws from jobsite saws to large industrial saws.

Our friends at Pro Tool Reviews just did a nice comparison on the Bosch Reaxx and SawStop jobsite saws.

Bosch 12V EC Brushless Impacts PS42 & PS82

Bosch 12V Impacts

While most pro tool brands are pushing for bigger and more powerful tools, Bosch is looking to deliver smaller more compact tools but maintain the power that pros need. We recently looked at the 18V Compact Tough Drills overhaul with similar shrinking profile. These new 12V EC Brushless impacts are a great example with 975 in lbs on the ¼” driver, 1020 in lbs on the 3/8” but fit into the palm of your hand at 2.2lbs, 5.5”. Build for professionals with new EC brushless motors, all-meatal gearbox, Durashild housing and improved LED light ring. These are a little pricier than common 12V but again these are aimed at professionals, PS42 ($119, bare) & PS82 ($149, bare).     (more…)

Brushless 18V Impact Driver Challenge 2016 – Bosch vs Dewalt vs Makita vs Milwaukee

2016 cordless impact compare

The impact driver has really become the go to cordless tool on the jobsite over the last decade. These tools are super compact but can pack a ton of torque without risk of twisting your arm off you will find with a powerful drill/driver. We honestly think the bits & impact accessories for these tools still need to catch up to the power they can all put out. For this test we took the latest and greatest from the top 4 professional brands and used 2.0Ah batteries with each. The contestants are as follows: Bosch 18V IDH182 ($179), Dewalt 20V DCF887 ($110), Makita 18V XDT09 ($199) and Milwaukee M18 2757-20 ($179). We looked at a variety of applications and put them all on the Skidmore for torque testing here is what we found.

Bosch Tools to Sell Direct

Remastered Bosch Recon

(Post Updated 8/13/2016: Bosch’s Official response added below)

If you’re shopping for Reconditioned tools, Bosch has cut out the middlemen of retail and is now selling direct to customers through their website Bosch Remastered. Of course reconditioned power tools are always sold for less because they have been used or the package was damage or something went wrong but is now fixed. That being said reconditioned tools can often be a great value as they can easily last as long as brand new. Additionally they are selling brand new Bosch Accessories direct to customers through the website which has a lot of their local dealers pretty nervous. (more…)

Bosch Tools New 18V Brushless Drills & Hammer Drills

EC Brushless Bosch

These new cordless EC Brushless drills from Bosch are their 2nd generation brushless models for the “Compact Tough” mid-torque application range. We are still waiting to see a Bosch “Brute Tough” Brushless models to go up against the Milwaukee FUEL, Dewalt and Makita drills with the 1000+ in lbs torque (like we tested in the 2015 Hammer Drill Showdown) which Bosch will hopefully launch later 2016. These new Bosch Compact Tough models produce a solid 531 in lbs, enough for 90% of common applications (only a year ago 700 in lbs was considered very heavy duty). The selling point with these units is defiantly in size, weight, value and safety without sacrificing other pro features.   (more…)

Bosch 18V One Handed Recip Saw GSA18V-083B

Bosch 18V Recip

One of the biggest trends in Cordless recip saws over the past few years has surprisingly been away from the bigger, more beefy saws and more towards the less expensive, compact recip saws. For a lot of jobs these one handed cordless saws really are the way to go. One first glance the new Bosch 18V recip GSA18V-083B ($139, bare) definitely looks like a blue version of the Milwaukee M18 Hackzall ($99, bare) but on second glance, well yeah it still looks like a Bosch Hackzall. That isn’t a terrible thing however because it’s been very popular for Milwaukee cordless users so no reason to think Bosch 18V Cordless users would be any less excited for this addition. (more…)

OSHA Silica Dust Rules for September 23, 2017

**** OSHA UPDATE 4/7/2017 – New OSHA Deadline is September 23, 2017 for Silica Dust Compliance as there was a 90 day extension added.

OSHA rules Silica Dust

Crystalline silica dust is nasty business and can be incredibly harmful for employees who regularly breathe in the dust during their work day. Protecting workers from these hazards should be fundamental and these new OSHA rules should not come as much of a surprise. Most commonly silica dust is created from drilling, breaking cutting, tuck-pointing or grinding materials such as concrete, brick, rock and stone. June 23, 2017 is the deadline for construction (technically in effect June 23, 2016 but finable in 2017), other industries will be following in 2018 such as industrial, fracturing and maritime, this may seem like a lot of time but it’ll be here before you know it. We will try to give you a general idea what is coming, contact OSHA with any questions.

Bosch GLL-30 Cross Line Laser GLL-30 Launching @ $69

Bosch Line Laser GLL-30

Bosch has been very aggressive recently with Lasers and Measuring Tools launching a host of new products at some surprisingly low price points. The new Bosch GLL-30 coming in June will retail for only $69, with all the common features you’d expect from Bosch like self-leveling for plum and level, manual lock mode and 5/16” accuracy @ 30′. It even comes with a MM2 mount, good for clamping onto a work surface but does not have magnetic capability like their BM3 ($25) mount.

Bosch GLL-30

We are expect some higher end Bosch line lasers coming soon as well and hopefully they will launch a green line laser at some point soon. They are really filling in all the gaps to be a full solution laser company. For more info on the Bosch GLL-30 coming soon check out their video and full Bosch Press Release below.
