OSHA Silica Dust Rules for September 23, 2017

**** OSHA UPDATE 4/7/2017 – New OSHA Deadline is September 23, 2017 for Silica Dust Compliance as there was a 90 day extension added.

OSHA rules Silica Dust

Crystalline silica dust is nasty business and can be incredibly harmful for employees who regularly breathe in the dust during their work day. Protecting workers from these hazards should be fundamental and these new OSHA rules should not come as much of a surprise. Most commonly silica dust is created from drilling, breaking cutting, tuck-pointing or grinding materials such as concrete, brick, rock and stone. June 23, 2017 is the deadline for construction (technically in effect June 23, 2016 but finable in 2017), other industries will be following in 2018 such as industrial, fracturing and maritime, this may seem like a lot of time but it’ll be here before you know it. We will try to give you a general idea what is coming, contact OSHA with any questions.

Bosch Line Laser GLL-30

Bosch has been very aggressive recently with Lasers and Measuring Tools launching a host of new products at some surprisingly low price points. The new Bosch GLL-30 coming in June will retail for only $69, with all the common features you’d expect from Bosch like self-leveling for plum and level, manual lock mode and 5/16” accuracy @ 30′. It even comes with a MM2 mount, good for clamping onto a work surface but does not have magnetic capability like their BM3 ($25) mount.

Battle for Safer Jobsite Table Saws – Bosch Reaxx vs SawStop

Bosch Reaxx Saw

It was well over a year ago we first heard Bosch Reaxx Jobsite Table Saw GTS1041A-09 ($1499) would be hitting the market to compete with the SawStop Jobsite Table Saw JSS-MCA ($1299, + $100 w/shipping) which had, at the time, just hit the market. Well it looks like the day is soon at hand as Bosch is promising to deliver these new saws starting June 1 (you can pre-orders now), despite the active lawsuit with SawStop. We want to look at pros and cons raised by both sides and hopefully get a better idea how these two saws stack up! (more…)

Bosch SpeedClean Carbide

When it comes to drilling, grinding, cutting or working with concrete in general, times they are a changing. It used to be acceptable to kick up clouds of silica dust and people just dealt with it. Not the case anymore and even on many the jobsite this is just not tolerated. When it comes to drilling holes in concrete whether overhead, horizontally or vertically this can be create a bit of a mess but the Bosch SDS-MAX SpeedClean and SDS-Plus SpeedClean carbide bits offer several advantages above and beyond just a cleaner, safer work environment.

STARLOCK Bosch & Fein Oscillating Tool Collaboration

Bosch Fein Starlock

A few years ago if you had told us Fein and Bosch would team up on Oscillating Tool Accessories we would have thought you were crazy. At the time there was a frantic rush for every brand to have their own accessories which meant a very narrow mix of accessories for customers and harder for retailers to stock. Fast forward a few years and a couple factors make this partnership pretty logical. With lots of new competition in the market and the expansion of what oscillating accessories are trying to accomplish it makes some sense for the top brands to come together to establish a universal standard. This will allow the accessories which require more power to be matched to tools that can perform, regardless of brands.

2015 Cordless Reciprocating Saw Challenge – Bosch, Dewalt, Makita, Metabo, Milwaukee

2015 recip saw comparison

The Reciprocating Saw or Sawzall is the most popular cordless cutting tool because they are so handy and very versatile. For demo or rough work this is often the best option but even in cutting pipe, other metals or even precision work these tools can pinch hit extremely well, if you’ve got the right accessories. At this point 18V lithium batteries are more than adequate to power these types of saws for extended periods which is why it is so surprising we don’t see more brushless recip saws for the professional heavy duty use.

We have seen several manufacturers launch compact recip solutions recently, brushed motors and at lower price points. These are great tools and certainly have a place for DIY and Pro users but should compliment a full size reciprocating saw solution. We selected the most powerful recip saws these pro brands offer and put them with 5.0 Ah (5.5Ah Metabo) batteries (listed as bare tools): Bosch 18V CRS180BN ($129), Dewalt 20V DCS380B ($129), Makita 18V XRJ03Z ($169), Metabo 18V ASE18 LTX ($179), Milwaukee M18 Brushless 2720-20 ($199).

2015 Cordless Hammer Drill Challenge – Bosch, Dewalt, Makita, Metabo, Milwaukee

Hammer Drill Comparison 2015

The hammer drill is the most popular cordless power tool, so no surprise these are the tools we see manufacturers reinvent every couple of years. With constant technology improvements things are changing faster and faster which is also why this is our 3rd comparison test (Comparison Test 1 5/12, Test 2 9/14) we’ve done for cordless hammer drills. Previously we compared these tools drilling holes into concrete, using “hammer mode”. Of course many of these tools will spend only a small fraction of their lives actually working in concrete and some may never touch any aggregate. The hammer drills are also included in most heavy duty combo kits so chances are good that’s what you’ll get even if you just wanted a drill/driver.

For this test we did 3 different comparisons in wood and metal to measure power, speed and runtime. We’ve got the latest tools all running 5.0Ah (5.5Ah Metabo) and their latest hammer drills; Bosch HDH181X-01L, Dewalt DCD995M2, Makita XPH07T, Metabo SB18LXTBL, and Milwaukee 2704-22 (new generation 2 brushless).
