What’s New at 2012 STAFDA Tool Trade Show

STAFDA 2012

Last week we were at the Specialty Tools and Fasteners Distributors (STAFDA) Trade Show, where tool and accessory manufacturers get together to promote their products to tool distributors around the world. There were some exciting new products we finally had a chance to get our hands on, some of which we already knew about, but others that were pretty exciting new things. In the coming weeks we will circle back and do full reviews on many of the products we take a look at here. Also check out our Facebook Album for more photos from the show. (more…)

Makita 18V Cordless Random Orbit Sander LXOB01

Cordless Sander

Before talking about any power tools let us demonstrate our amazing psychic powers so powerful we can even demonstrate them over the internet. Picture a cordless random orbit sander… now let me show this amazing talent… you are having feelings of past tool disappointments and imagining ridiculous tools with laser beams or other gimmicks. Amazing, right! That being said, let us be the first to say we were very surprised by the performance, value and runtime of the Makita Cordless Random Orbit Sander LXOB01 ($279, Amazon) kit. The Bare Tool Sander LXOB01Z is only $109 if you already have plenty of the Makita 18VLXT batteries. (more…)

Makita 36V Rotary Hammer with 18V Batteries

Makita 36V Rotary Hammer

Flipping through one of our favorite Construction Supply magazines yesterday I came across a very interesting Makita advertisement for the new 18VX2 SDS-Plus 1” Rotary Hammer Drill. Not really much info available yet on this new tool, but from the ad it appears to be a 36V unit which is powered by 2x 18V LXT. This is very interesting as Makita just recently announced a new 18V Brushless SDS Hammer LXRH011 with cordless HEPA vac. The 18VX2 is a 36V unit which means you will definitely need 2 batteries but it doesn’t mention anything about brushless technology so our first question is how would these 2 compare in run time. The new unit will just come as a tool only version HRH01ZX2 with a target retail price of $359.  (more…)

Makita 18V Brushless SDS Rotary Hammer Drill with HEPA Vac LXRH011

In the game of cordless concrete drilling it looks like Makita has taken a big leap forward with a couple of nice improvements on this unit. First the capacity rating on this unit is 1” which is a first for an 18 volt cordless SDS-Plus hammer drill. While not the first to use brushless technology in a cordless SDS-Plus, it’s obviously a big factor in getting enough power for that capacity that still has a decent runtime. This is also the first cordless rotary hammer drill to couple the slide on HEPA vacuum with the newer brushless technology. (more…)

Makita 18V Brushless Impact Drivers – 3 Speed vs Single Speed

There is no denying it brushless tools are taking over. The extended runtime, compact size, longer motor life and higher power output make the choice obvious. Makita was one of the first to really push their brushless impact driver with the 3 Speed LXDT01 ($295, Amazon) which includes (2) 3.0Ah batteries. Their latest brushless impact driver keeps the same basic brushless motor but loses the 3 speed option and lowers the cost LXDT08 ($275, Amazon).

18V Hammer Drill Showdown Bosch, Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee

***** UPDATE 10/16/2015 Hammer Drill Test Showdown 3 for the latest cordless Hammer Drill models and 5.0Ah+ batteries

We got the most current top 4 contenders in the cordless 18V category and pitted them head to head to see where they stacked up. Two with brushed motors, two brushless, all with their highest 3.0 amp/hour batteries brand new and fully charged. Since we are talking hammer drills our thought was let’s see how the hammer action works and drill lots and lots of ½” holes in concrete… a test we later regretted but good news, feeling is starting to return to our hands. We also wanted to test out the actual torque for each vs what they claim and get an in/lbs number on the Dewalt hammer drill, to see how they stack up. See all 46 pics in this Facebook Album.

Makita 1-1/4HP Compact Router Kit RT0700CX3 Review

First off we would not consider ourselves serious woodworkers, being friends/colleagues with many whom we would consider at least serious hobbyists we have an appreciation for the depths of capabilities in the world of routers. Our router competencies are somewhat limited to giving projects round edges, material removal and some basic joinery. This does perhaps give us a perspective a little closer to many of the purchaser of this new Makita Compact Router Kit RT0700CX3 ($234, Amazon) which may be their first router purchase.

This kit comes with a lot of really cool router accessories including trim guide, (2) dust nozzles, (2) collects, fix base, plunge base, tilt base and even an offset base. All this fits nicely into the huge Teal Makita bag that looks like it might double as a beach cooler for a case of beer. There are several compartments and a few pockets on the inside of the lid but we do wish there was some kind of case to store all the loose odds and ends that come with this kit.

Makita Oscillating Tool with 18V for More Power & Runtime

One of the biggest complaints we have heard with cordless oscillating tools is the lack of battery life. On a 12v battery typically you are going to see less than 10 minutes of runtime with operations like sanding, grout removal and continuous cutting. The small compact size is very handy however we are also finding these units to be far less powerful than the 3.0Amp corded tools common in stores now. This new Makita is one of the only major brands to go with a 18V platform for longer battery life and claims to be as powerful as their new corded 3.0Amp tool (also launching in May) so for serious users this might be a better option.
