You Already Have Makita Sync Lock 18V Security

Makita Battery Security

There have been some struggles for both the Milwaukee ONE-KEY and Dewalt Tool Connect platforms as Theft Deterrent Systems and Makita feels they’ve got a strong agreement for their new Sync Lock Security System. These other systems offer multiple features, App connectivity and a lot of Bells and Whistles however in many small, mid-size and larger companies we’ve talked with they are looking for simple to use, low cost solutions for just theft deterrents for their tools and batteries. The Makita Sync Lock takes a much different approach and we think have really nailed an easy to use straight forward solution that will be exactly what some companies are looking for and the best part is it works with all the batteries you currently own!

What is Makita Sync Lock?

The Sync Lock Battery Terminal BPS01 ($199) is all you need to access it and get going, a very simple device (along with free software anyone can download) which allows you to very quickly set up your terminal (or multiple terminals) for your company. Then any Makita 18V battery that goes on the terminal is set exclusively to just your company and needs to be reset on one of your company’s terminals at an interval which you determine either in hours, days, weeks, months, years or whatever you want. When time expires that battery does nothing (not even charging) until it is put back on one of your companies terminals! The terminals themselves work in about 2 seconds and use a standard alkaline battery that’ll last 2+ years so very trouble free to operate.      (more…)

2017 Vacuum Comparison Test, OSHA Silica Table 1

Vacuums Comparison Testing

*** Important to note we are not testing if these vacs meet the OSHA Standards, we are only testing usability & performance. We are relying on the manufacturer testing to be accurate in that all 6 competitors do meet the standards!

The new OSHA Silica Standard is officially now a finable offense, having been in effect for over a year already they were not issuing fines before September 23rd, 2017, that has now changed. We have previous covered several topics related to this new standard including What is OSHA Silica Standard, what are steps can you take for your Company Silica Assessments and what is the Difference between Table 1 vs Objective Data testing. This topic is huge and worker safety is extremely important which we could never cover it all but we did want to take a deeper dive into what is one of the most important components, the Dust Extraction Vacuums used as the center piece for many of engineered controls.

Makita 18V Brushless Router Trimmer – XTR01

GUEST POST: Dwain is one of the guys from oztooltalk. You can find more of their videos at their youtube channel.

Until their recent 18×2 tools started turning heads, Makita hasn’t seemed to get a lot of credit in the US. But over here in Australia, Makita has completely dominated the power tool scene for decades, cordless and electric (Note: Milwaukee cordless has drawn level in recent years). Makita have almost had a monopoly on woodworking tools such as circular saws, planers and in particular routers.

So it comes as no surprise to me that Makita have released a truly spectacular cordless router/trimmer, (in USA) the XTR01Z ($149, bare) & XTR01t7 ($399, Kit with plunge).

Makita 18Vx2 Brushless 6-1/2″ Track Saw XPS01

Makita brushless track saw XPS01

Recently we had the opportunity to attend Makita’s New Product Event where we got to see a handful on exciting new Makita products launching over the next several months in woodworking, concrete, outdoor power and many other categories. One product that was really a big launch for us was the Brushless Track Saw XPS01Z ($349,bare) or XPS01PTJ ($499, kit). If you’ve ever used Makita’s corded track saw SP6000J ($349) we’ve got good news if you liked it, bad news if you didn’t, they are very very similar. And the 55″ & 110″ tracks as well as all the other accessories are completely interchangeable.

Makita 10″ Sliding Compound Miter Saws LS1019L (corded) & XSL06Z (cordless)

Makita has always been a strong name in miter saws, and this year they are releasing two new competitors in the ring that will be sure to impress. We got our hands on the two new saws at the 2017 Makita New Products event and were able to get some live demos before they hit the shelves.

Makita 18V Threaded Rod & Rebar Flush-Cut

Makita 18v Rebar Cutter XCS02

While at the 2017 Makita New Products Event this year, we got a pretty good look at the impressive new 18v Cordless Steel Rod Flush-Cutter XCS02T1 ($1295, Kit), which is a solid alternative to hydraulic rebar cutting options like the Makita cordless XCS01 ($1999, bare). It has a brushless motor (looks to be the same as the brushless grinders) and can cut #8 60 grade threaded rod and rebar from 3-8”-1”.  This is a slight step up in capacity from the Hydraulic Rebar Cutter, less expensive and leaves a cleaner cut.

Brushless 18V Hammer Drill Fight – Milwaukee, Makita, Dewalt, Bosch, Hilti, Hitachi & Metabo

Oz Tool Talk 18V Hammer Drills

We recently had the opportunity to spend a few days from the guys from OZ TOOL TALK and were extremely impressed with their tool geek knowledge. They do great Youtube videos almost every week and some of the best in-depth cordless tool comparisons we’ve seen. Of course they are in Australia so models and brands don’t always line up but in the recently Brushless 18V Hammer Drill Fight – Milwaukee, Makita, Dewalt, Bosch, Hilti, Hitachi & Metabo all models do correlate to our numbers either directly or they give the North American versions. While they talk about all the testing in Kg, mm and Nm (for torque) at 2:47 they also provide the conversion to lbs, inches and in.lbs torque in their full spec sheet. Great video, awesome info, check it out!

Makita Tools 2017 New Product Launch Event

Makita HQ

Makita Media Event 2017

We were honored to be invited to the first ever Makita Tool new product launch event were we were among the first to see many of the new tools and accessories that’ll be releasing later this year! Not only does this give us some great insights into tools we will be getting our hands on in the coming months but also gives us all a glimps into where the Teal Team is headed with their product focus.

What we didn’t see, while we saw some really cool stuff there were some things we thought might be coming but we’re not at this event. Makita does hold product launches a little closer to the vest than some other brands so most of what we got to play with is coming within a few months, not 6-12 months out. We did not see a 9.0ah or a 20700 cell battery or a Bluetooth battery (although there was other Bluetooth tech). We did not see a 110v power station or a 7” grinder. We also did not see a X2 brushless SDS-MAX rotary hammer which if any of these are in the pipeline coming soon it would have to be this one to compete with Flexvolt and Milwaukee M18. Again we will certainly see more from Makita in November at STAFDA and at World of Concrete early next years but no news to report today on these items.

What we did see was some very exciting stuff in a handful of different categories which it seems like Makita has been very strategic in there expansion. (more…)
