MAKITA and DOLMAR are Merging into One

Dolmar Makita Chain Saws

The Dolmar Outdoor Equipment brand has been owned by Makita for many years now (since 1991), which is why Makita does so well with gas blowers, gas concrete cutters and gas chain saws. Leading the way with the MM4 4-stroke technology but also continuing to innovative on the 2-stroke side with MM2.

Moving forward the Makita and Dolmar brands will become one under Makita Power Equipment, by integrating the two there will actually be a rather large expansion of the professional chain saw options for forestry and farm as well as occasional use. The deeper line-up of power equipment makes sense on both sides and will tie in nicely with all the 18V and 18Vx2 (36V) Lithium-Ion cordless chain saws, blowers, trimmers, etc. Below is a brushless 36v chain saw model currently selling in Japan, looks like it will hit US market soon as XCU03Z. Longer run-time, longer bar, better balance and more power!

Future of Cordless Power Tools, 10.0Ah and Beyond

Future is Here

A couple of years ago we went on a rant Future of Cordless Power Tools, 5.0Ah and Beyond where we predicted a bunch of cordless power tools we’d hope to see in the next couple years and whamo they almost all came true. Cordless SDS-Max hammer, cordless table saw, cordless trim router, cordless miter saws (full size), cordless HEPA vacs, battery to AC power inverters and more are all available at your local tool store today (or very very soon). Clearly we’re not psychic it’s pretty systematic as battery technology improves it’s logical all the next most popular, higher voltage tools will go cordless. So what might be coming next?

We just did a post about some of the new battery cell technology (18650 vs 20700) and how that plays into power tools with LiHD vs FlexVolt vs M18 and others, it got us think again. It seems like if we look 2, 3, 4 more years ahead, assuming the Tesla Giga-Factory continues to comes on line we should expect even bigger leaps forward and lower priced battery packs. We should expect cell improvements to continue on the 20700 standard, the typical 18v battery pack (10 cells) will hopefully be at least 8.0Ah capacity, larger packs 12.0Ah (15 cells), stack multiple packs and you’re talking serious juice, the possibilities are wide open. Brushless 18V Impact Driver Challenge 2016 – Bosch vs Dewalt vs Makita vs Milwaukee

2016 cordless impact compare

The impact driver has really become the go to cordless tool on the jobsite over the last decade. These tools are super compact but can pack a ton of torque without risk of twisting your arm off you will find with a powerful drill/driver. We honestly think the bits & impact accessories for these tools still need to catch up to the power they can all put out. For this test we took the latest and greatest from the top 4 professional brands and used 2.0Ah batteries with each. The contestants are as follows: Bosch 18V IDH182 ($179), Dewalt 20V DCF887 ($110), Makita 18V XDT09 ($199) and Milwaukee M18 2757-20 ($179). We looked at a variety of applications and put them all on the Skidmore for torque testing here is what we found.

Makita 18V Pin Nailer 23 Gauge XTP01 with Miss Makita

It was a surprise to learn Miss Makita, Ally Mello, actually knows something about power tools and was pretty handy with the cordless pin nailer. Apparently she does a little refinishing/repurposes of old furniture in her spare time. Makita is the first to offer an cordless Pin Nailer for 23 gauge pin nails. The Makita XTP01Z ($189) can fire roughly 1,000 pins per Amp Hour on a battery so 3.0Ah battery would do roughly 3,000 pins. This would be a great option for a slim 2.0Ah battery pack to keep it as light as possible. The gun has plenty of power to drive the tiny pins and tool features all expected items like anti-dry fire, depth adjust and two stage trigger. (more…)

Makita 18V Cooling Jacket DFJ201 with Miss Makita

Makita 18v fan jacket

Who wore it better? Ok that’s not a serious question, clearly Ally Mellow, Miss Makita 2016 wears it better no contest. We honestly were not sure if the Makita 18V fan jacket DFJ201Z ($149) was actually going to hit shelves in the US but it is here… just in time for fall. We had a chance to try it on at STAFDA which was an air conditions trade show but we also recently tried it on outside on a hot, humid 94 degree day and it was super effective. If you don’t mind looking like a stay puff marshmallow man it’ll keep you cool. At the outside show guys were putting in on and not wanting to take it off, it definitely gets the job done. (more…)

Makita 18V Brushless Recip Saws XRJ05 & XRJ06 with Miss Makita

Makita XRJ05Z brushless saw

The most used cutting tool in any cordless lineup is typically the recip saw because these tools are so versatile great for wood, metal, demo or clean cutting. Until recently the Milwaukee M18 Sawzall was the only brushless option on the market, so it was no surprise they won our 2015 Recip Saw Challenge by a good margin. However it is now 2016 and Makita has already shown their brushless motors can meet or exceed the competition in many categories and now they are launching two new brushless reciprocating saw options 18V recip XRJ05Z ($199) and 36V (18Vx2) recip XRJ06X ($219).

Makita 18V SDS-Plus Rotary Drill & HEPA Vac with Miss Makita

Miss Makita SDS-Plus with HEPA Vac

While the Makita 18V Brushless SDS-Plus Rotary with HEPA Vac XRH011XVX ($399) is not new on the market (released over a year ago) it has received an increase in interest recently because of the changing OSHA Silica Dust Rules. The rule started June 23rd and becomes a fine-able offense in 2017, basically if you are drilling concrete on a job you better be collecting the dust with some sort of vac system. For smaller holes, 1″ or less this compact cordless system is a great solution, HEPA rates and all powered off a single Makita 18V LXT battery.

Makita Cordless Vacuums, XCV04Z & Backpack Vac XCV05Z

Cordless Vacuums

Cordless vacuums that use power tool batteries have been out for many years however the power and runtime have kept them limited to smaller units that look like 80’s Dustbusters or hand held shop vacs. Makita is the first to launch a “full size” cordless/corded shop vac XCV04Z ($569) on casters which can be rolled around the jobsite easily. Full Size referring to features and power, which when plugged into AC is an impressive 127 CFM. The cordless backpack vacuum XCV05Z ($329) is another first, for complete mobility this is an ideal solution. In addition to these cordless solutions hitting the market as we speak, Makita is also working on some coming soon projects like the cordless robotic vac to clean large areas autonomously, similar to a Roomba vacuum but capable of clearing 1/2 football field (not yet releasing in US).
