It was actually pretty hard to narrow it down to just 10 as we saw a lot of innovations this year from many many manufacturers. We are sticking with tools that actually hit the shelves and were used by professionals in 2017, not launched at a trade show but won’t be here until 2018 or later. We are just going to do a quick rundown of each as well as talk a little at the end for hopes for this year’s (2018) tool innovations.
10. Milwaukee PACKOUT Storage System – While storage solutions are nothing new for professional tool brands we do think the PACKOUT system has really changed the game and set the bar much higher for these systems. Much more tough and rugged than other popular systems from Dewalt, Ridgid and even Festool Systainer. The demand has been crazy with back orders possibly out until February. How is this a “Power Tool” innovation? We have seen some M12 FUEL Tools packed into the small PACKOUT already, M18 FUEL will be coming in Larger PACKOUTS very soon at aggressive pricing. Will it change the way we buy and store Power Tools? We have just 1 request for Milwaukee, please make an addition to the lineup with a Roller Cooler. Coptool Post on PACKOUT (more…)

*** Important to note we are not testing if these vacs meet the OSHA Standards, we are only testing usability & performance. We are relying on the manufacturer testing to be accurate in that all 6 competitors do meet the standards!
The new OSHA Silica Standard is officially now a finable offense, having been in effect for over a year already they were not issuing fines before September 23rd, 2017, that has now changed. We have previous covered several topics related to this new standard including What is OSHA Silica Standard, what are steps can you take for your Company Silica Assessments and what is the Difference between Table 1 vs Objective Data testing. This topic is huge and worker safety is extremely important which we could never cover it all but we did want to take a deeper dive into what is one of the most important components, the Dust Extraction Vacuums used as the center piece for many of engineered controls.

Well it looks like Hitachi (which yes is now the same company as Metabo) has launched a Multi-Volt platform very similar to the Dewalt FlexVolt which can pull more power when needed but then still work with all the 18V tools. The big difference here is it is in a traditional 18V package with 2 row of cells not 3 rows like you would see with FlexVolt or Milwaukee 9.0Ah. Certainly an Multi-Volt 2 battery system for 72V would also be possible. Very interesting so far we just have this video in Japanese to tease us…

Coptool and oztooltalk bumped into each other recently whilst visting Metabo headquarters in Nürtingen, Germany. The two day tour included the production line, showroom and tool testing facility.
After a presentation from the CEO, who’s technical knowledge of their battery technology surprised me, we headed straight for the production line. The first surprise for me was that Metabo produce almost every part in the facility. Smelting and moulding of steel and aluminium, plastic moulding, precision milling and bending, and assembly are all done on the same grounds.

We recently had the opportunity to spend a few days from the guys from OZ TOOL TALK and were extremely impressed with their tool geek knowledge. They do great Youtube videos almost every week and some of the best in-depth cordless tool comparisons we’ve seen. Of course they are in Australia so models and brands don’t always line up but in the recently Brushless 18V Hammer Drill Fight – Milwaukee, Makita, Dewalt, Bosch, Hilti, Hitachi & Metabo all models do correlate to our numbers either directly or they give the North American versions. While they talk about all the testing in Kg, mm and Nm (for torque) at 2:47 they also provide the conversion to lbs, inches and in.lbs torque in their full spec sheet. Great video, awesome info, check it out!

We recently had the opportunity to visit Metabo’s headquarters in Nürtingen, Germany for a full tour of how they whined the copper, assemble armature, electronics, housing, etc. It was very impressive and clearly, they are continuing to advance in corded technology, which it seems other manufacturers have forgotten. Of course in USA Metabo’s bread & butter is their Grinders and Slicer Wheels so we were not surprised they continue to advance their motor technology in grinders. Coming to market as we speak Metabo is launching their compact Rat Tail Grinders which have the highest power/weight ratio ever of any grinder and also offer all their safety features clutch, brake, tethering attachment and more!

Last year was Metabo’s 50th anniversary so they came out with special edition 4-1/2” & 6” grinders with gold trim and some extra wheels in packaging. Well it’s no longer their 50th anniversary year while the 6” gold grinders are all gone you can pick up the few remaining Metabo Gold 4-1/2” Grinders for a steal at $99!!! That’s a huge savings, over 30% for a typical WP9-115 Quick, won’t last long!

While Metabo does not yet have a very large market share for cordless tools in the US they have been extremely aggressive on cordless product development globally. They were first to launch 5.0Ah several years back, then first to use new 20700 cells with LiHD batteries and now first to launch a 7.0Ah (sneek peak from Metabo Germany info)! Next month Coptool will be headed to visit the Metabo home office to get hand-on time with some of the new tools and technology. There are some interesting new Metabo Cordless Tools in the video below (hedge trimmers, rotary drills, etc) but will they make it to the US? Certainly there will be some exciting things to come, stay tuned.
Most importantly how do we get our hands on the giant Metabo Battery Scooter!!!

Recently we had an opportunity to try out a wide variety of Metabo tools at their media event. Of course the big focus was on their expansive line up of cordless tools designed specifically for metal trades. The 18V Brushless Tapping Drill GB18LXTBLIQ ($299, bare) is a perfect example of that in action. Not only are we looking at a great drill/driver with 1,300 in. lbs., currently the most powerful on the market, this drill makes tapping a crazy simple idiot-proof process. Snap the chuck off and it also becomes a ¼” driver for fastening and other applications.

Every holiday season it seems like the big boxes put serious pressure on all the name brand Power Tool guys to make the cheapest possible cordless tool kits and accessory bundles to hit their price points. They’ll pack them with older SKUs or lower amp batteries or throw in stuff that doesn’t always make sense all in an effort to show a “better deal” often targeting consumers that might not know the difference. We thought we’d take a different approach to find deals that make sense for PROFESSIONALS who know their stuff, to find the best deals on the latest and greatest stuff at all price levels. Use Coupon Code = GIFTGUIDE at Ohio Power Tool to receive Free Shipping on any of these specific items!! (more…)
