Southwire Wobble Light

Southwire Tools has been growing both with aggressive product development but also with some very smart strategic acquisitions such as very recent purchase of Garvin Industries, to join Colman Cable for their Extension Cords, Maxis for Knockouts & Wire Pullers, Sumner for material lifts, material carts, pipe stands and the list goes on. Southwire is already a leader in LED jobsite lighting but with the addition of ProBuilt they will now one of the market leaders for construction temporary lighting. We have been very impressed with the investment they have made in the brands that join the Southwire family with lots of investment in R&D we thing they’ve made a lot of improvements along the way. Inside Look | Milwaukee M18 FUEL Hammer Drill 2704-22 vs 2804-22

M18 FUEL Hammer Drills

Well the Red team is at it again updating their FUEL brushless Hammer Drills for the 3rd time, they say 3rd time is the charm! The 2704-22 generation 2 was a huge leap forward on the power side GEN 1 was 750 in-lbs to 1,200 in-lbs for GEN 2. When we look at the power change GEN 2 to GEN 3 2804-22 specs are pretty flat, with the same 1,200 in-lbs stated. That being said we weren’t really looking for more power here, already one of the most powerful in the market the 2804-22 really focuses on some other areas for improvement, going more compact and some other improvements.

Cordless 9” Grinders: M18 FUEL 2785 vs Makita 18Vx2 XAG13

Cordless 9" Grinders

We’d had a few opportunities to run the Makita 9” cordless grinder 18Vx2 LXT XAG13PT1 ($419), both in metal cutting applications as well as in concrete cutting and concrete grinding applications. It has done fairly well for cordless grinder, very close to a large corded grinder. Milwaukee has now launched its own 9” cordless grinder in the 2785-21HD ($399) but with only 18V we look to see if it can keep up with Makita’s 36V grinder.

There is also a 3rd option for cordless 9” grinders worth mentioning in the Metabo WPB 36-18 LXT BL ($699, bare) which is a nice tool however at double the price, once batteries are factored, this puts is pretty far out of range when compared to the other two. (more…)

Ingersoll Rand W7152 IQv20 ½” Impact 1500 ft-lbs.

W7152 IR IMpact

Clearly Ingersoll Rand has a focus on mechanics, being the name brand in air tools for many years we were not surprised when their first cordless impact W7150 hit the market years ago it was truly innovative. Even years later when we compared high torque impacts (see post here) it held its own pro cordless brands with Milwaukee, Makita, Dewalt and others. With a narrow focus on mechanics IR wants to be the leaders in Impact wrenches, Air Tools or Cordless so we were not surprised they would come out with the new W7152 which promises best in class 1500 ft-lbs Nut Busting torque.

Milwaukee M18 Battery Upgrade 9.0Ah vs 12.0Ah

M18 Batteries 12Ah vs 9Ah

At Milwaukee’s New Product Symposium 2018 there were a lot of exciting announcements, one of which was the new 12.0Ah High Output M18 Batteries 48-11-1812. Most of the new NPS M18 FUEL Tools launching in July come with this new larger battery including the Table Saw, Super Sawzall, Chainsaw, Grinder and Gen 2 Circular Saw. These new 12.0Ah High Outputs use the 21700 cells for more runtime, less overheating and more peak power draw capability. We had 2 big questions; FIRST how will my existing 5.0Ah & 9.0Ah batteries perform in the new tools. SECOND will the 12.0Ah increase performance on any of my existing tools such as the M18 10” Miter Saw, Gen 1 Circular Saw or Sawzall?

Can Milwaukee M18 Chain Saw 2727-21HD Replace Gas?

Launching very soon, July 2018, the Milwaukee M18 FUEL 16” Chain Saw 2727-21HD ($399) will be hitting the streets with the new 12.0Ah High Output batteries. The big question on everyone’s mind seems to be can this 18V cordless chain saw beat 36V, 40V, 54V, 60V, 80V but most importantly gas saws? Sure everyone would love to stop messing with gas engines and use a simple battery but a few important things have hindered them taking over the market. Most importantly Power, Price & Runtime! Milwaukee is not first to market here with a cordless chain saw that uses a tool battery but believe they can now address all 3 of these concerns. (more…)

These launches come only days ahead of Milwaukee’s big 2018 New Product Symposium #NPS18 so we anticipate some news coming from the Red Camp as well. These new batteries are not just a little more runtime however we are seeing real increase of peak watt output!
