Two big changes have been hitting the jobsite this year, we are seeing more heavy duty cordless tools taking the places of corded tools and clouds of silica dust are being eliminated. Unfortunately these 2 things don’t seem to work together as typical dust extractors turn on/off based off the tool plugged into them. Makita wireless AWS technology looks to change that, Auto-Start Wireless System (AWS), which uses Bluetooth™ technology for wireless communication between tool and vacuum/dust extractor to turn on/off makes a cordless vac system feasible from a power usage stand point. New AWS solutions announced was teased at their event last summer but fully launched last month at STAFDA including their first Cordless SDS-MAX hammer.
Leftover turkey is wrapped up and stowed in the fridge, Thanksgiving pies have been devoured, and you’re ready for a long nap. Unfortunately, the holiday shopping kicks off with a vengeance even before you’ve had time to make that cold turkey-stuffing-cranberry-sauce sandwich. In this article, we’re focusing on Makita’s holiday deals including hot buys, free tools and more! We of course are focused on professional users and the deals on the good stuff and try to stay away from the gimmicks. Stay tuned for more holiday deal posts coming for other top tool brands!
While there are many great Makita deals this holiday season, one of their bests is the on the 2-PC Combo Kit (XT268T, $429.97) and receive a free 6.0 battery (BL1860B, $159.95) AND your choice of a free bare tool. Free bare tool options include a circular saw (XSS02Z, $119.95), recip saw (XRJ04Z, $119.95), multi oscillating tool (XMT03Z, $119.95), the new compact router (XTR01Z, $149.97) and a dual port charger (DC18RD, $129.95). There have been some struggles for both the Milwaukee ONE-KEY and Dewalt Tool Connect platforms as Theft Deterrent Systems and Makita feels they’ve got a strong agreement for their new Sync Lock Security System. These other systems offer multiple features, App connectivity and a lot of Bells and Whistles however in many small, mid-size and larger companies we’ve talked with they are looking for simple to use, low cost solutions for just theft deterrents for their tools and batteries. The Makita Sync Lock takes a much different approach and we think have really nailed an easy to use straight forward solution that will be exactly what some companies are looking for and the best part is it works with all the batteries you currently own!
What is Makita Sync Lock?
The Sync Lock Battery Terminal BPS01 ($199) is all you need to access it and get going, a very simple device (along with free software anyone can download) which allows you to very quickly set up your terminal (or multiple terminals) for your company. Then any Makita 18V battery that goes on the terminal is set exclusively to just your company and needs to be reset on one of your company’s terminals at an interval which you determine either in hours, days, weeks, months, years or whatever you want. When time expires that battery does nothing (not even charging) until it is put back on one of your companies terminals! The terminals themselves work in about 2 seconds and use a standard alkaline battery that’ll last 2+ years so very trouble free to operate. (more…)
For several years now people have been asking us, when are we going to get a FUEL brushless version of the M18 Hackzall one-handed reciprocating saw. Finally we can say it has arrived, well at least the kit version 2719-21 ($249), hopefully the bare tool version 2719-20 ($149) to follow by the time you read this post. The new saw has more power, more runtime, smaller footprint and less vibration making it pretty much everything we’ve been looking for in a compact recip saw!

Bosch are making some waves this year, putting out some seriously premium 18v tools. Most importantly they have released their CORE batteries with greatly increased power ouput, enabling a host of more powerful 18v tools. These include their incredible new sabre saw GSA18V-125K, their 1″ Bulldog SDS GHB18V-26K and now their first brushless grinder, the GWS18V-125SC (note that is the European model number, may not be same in the US when released). Bosch claim it has the power of a 1,000W electric grinder when paired with a CORE battery!
Just hitting the streets recently Milwaukee has 3 new LED personal light solutions using the new REDLITHIUM USB battery platform. We saw these light first at the New Product Symposium (#NPS17) and they have been in very high demand for pre-sales. The 3 options include a 475 lumen Hard Hat Light 2111-21 ($59), 445 Lumen Rover Flood Light 2112-21 ($59) and a waterproof 700 lumen flashlight 2110-21 ($69). These are just the first of what we are guessing will be many new tools for the REDLITHIUM USB platform.
It’s been just over a year now since we first saw the Dewalt FlexVolt opening lineup and learned that Dewalt was investing heavily into yet another new battery platform. It would be backwards compatible with 20V however users would need to invest in all new batteries to use their new FlexVolt tools. The initial response from many of the Team Yellow faithful was “not again”. Now that the dust has settled it seems as though the adoption is picking up and Dewalt is continuing to release new professional tools on both 20V and FlexVolt platforms. (more…)

Bosch has increased their cordless reciprocating saw range substantially over the last couple of years. From just a single (mediocre) 18V standard model, to compact, one-handed models in both 12V and 18V, and now the premium brushless GSA18V-125N.
We saw these new Milwaukee Cordless Drain Cleaning solutions at this year’s New Product Symposium (#NPS17) we did leave there with a few questions and recently we had the opportunity to have Morgan in the shop and address some actual usability questions, pricing questions and try to get a glimpse into how deep Milwaukee plans to go into the Drain Cleaning. Below is our chat with Morgan and below that some additional info now available from Milwaukee, including their official product videos.
