There has not been much innovation in the soldering iron category recently however that is all about to change with the launch of the Milwaukee M12 Cordless Soldering Gun 2488-20 ($69, bare) and 2488-21 ($129, kit). With this tool you get 18 second heat up time and up to 40 minutes runtime with an M12 Compact Battery which is pretty increasable. We had a brief chance to use this tool at the New Product Symposium, see video below, but it will be hitting the market this month (November).

Bosch has increased their cordless reciprocating saw range substantially over the last couple of years. From just a single (mediocre) 18V standard model, to compact, one-handed models in both 12V and 18V, and now the premium brushless GSA18V-125N.

A quick history lesson in hand-held driving:
First hand-held electric drill: 1895
First cordless drill: 1961
Lithium-Ion battery tech: 2005
Brushless, 3-Speed impact driver: 2009
In the 2010’s we’ve seen: IP56 protection, self-tapping modes, a driver/wrench hybrid, lengths reduce to under 5″, improved bit-holders and raft of other minor improvements. It makes you wonder, what will an impact driver in 2025 look like? (more…)

For November & December there are some very aggressive Milwaukee Deals designed specifically to put M18 9.0Ah batteries into your hands. The 48-11-1890 sells for $200, it’ll probably stay that price all next year and we think it’s well worth it but you’d be crazy to buy one. Only a few years ago Milwaukee was a small fry in the cordless game, they got aggressive to become top potato these days but competition is now heating up with many others. Milwaukee solution, 9.0Ah batteries for EVERYONE!!!
One great way into a couple larger batteries is the M18 FUEL miter saw 2734-21HD ($599), which will come with 1 battery normally but for the next couple months or until they all sell out you’ll get 2x of the 9.0Ah monsters. Weight obviously plays no part in how this tool functions so it’s a great partner for the bigger batteries but honestly this saw will work for hours on even a 5.0Ah. (more…)

It used to be that trades were very loyal to certain trade specific tools electricians used GreenLee for knockouts and crimpers, plumbers used Ridgid threading and pipe tools, general tools whomever did it best like Skil Circular Saw, Bosch SDS Hammer, Milwaukee Sawzall and Dewalt Drill. The big move to cordless however changes everything because now it makes much more sense to stick to a single battery platform, and that platform is king. If you’ve got a dozen Dewalt 20V batteries and in the market for a press tool, chances are good you may consider the Dewalt over Ridgid ProPress.
Coming in June Dewalt will be adding 5 new tools to target professionals in various trades. For electricians Died Crimper DCE300, Dieless Crimper DCE350 and Cable Cutter DCE150, capacity up to 750 MCM Cu/1000 MCM Al. For Plumbing & Mechanical trades a Press Tool DCE200 to tackle 1/2” – 4” pipe. For various trades a Threaded Rod Cutter DCS350 which can do up to ½” steel and 3/8” stainless.
This seems like a somewhat scattered shot approach to building up the platform but these are the most popular power tools for various trades. For more info on these new tools the official Dewalt press release is below and expect more detailed info to follow in June on each tools specs, price and performance. (more…)
