Last year at the Milwaukee New Product Symposium, we caught a glimpse of the new STEELHEAD Diamond Cutting Wheels for Metal and Stainless Steel. So far we have received some really good feedback from those making the switch from using bonded abrasives to cut metal. These diamond blades offer huge advantages in durability and cost as well as safety. Just recently we have seen a dramatic price drop for the STEELHEAD wheels which looks to be here to stay, the 4.5″ wheel 49-93-7805 which could replace a whole box of abrasives wheels now under $15! We recently had the opportunity to visit Metabo’s headquarters in Nürtingen, Germany for a full tour of how they whined the copper, assemble armature, electronics, housing, etc. It was very impressive and clearly, they are continuing to advance in corded technology, which it seems other manufacturers have forgotten. Of course in USA Metabo’s bread & butter is their Grinders and Slicer Wheels so we were not surprised they continue to advance their motor technology in grinders. Coming to market as we speak Metabo is launching their compact Rat Tail Grinders which have the highest power/weight ratio ever of any grinder and also offer all their safety features clutch, brake, tethering attachment and more!
We’ve seen the market shift over the years from bi-metal to carbide blades, first with circular saws, then pretty recently with recip blades and now transitioning into the hole saw category. The new Diablo Carbide Hole Saws brings long life expectancy and faster cutting through wood and metal. Unlike other carbide hole saws we have seen just for wood which could also handle plastic and perhaps aluminum, these new Diablos can handle actual steel. We have been extremely impressed with the performance of Diablo Carbide Recip Blades in wood & metal and these new Diablo hole saws are very similar.
Last year was Metabo’s 50th anniversary so they came out with special edition 4-1/2” & 6” grinders with gold trim and some extra wheels in packaging. Well it’s no longer their 50th anniversary year while the 6” gold grinders are all gone you can pick up the few remaining Metabo Gold 4-1/2” Grinders for a steal at $99!!! That’s a huge savings, over 30% for a typical WP9-115 Quick, won’t last long!
The mag drill has been a critical tool for creating extremely accurate holes in thicker metal for many years now. Over the years there have been many improvements such as swivel bases, variable speed, integrated cooling, reversible as well as automating the process of actually drilling. The BDS / CS Unitec AutoMAB 350 ($1499) in a 1-1/2” mag drill that can be used automated for drilling in as well as automatically retract the bit completely. So why pay more than double of their own MABasic 200 ($599) for an automatic mag drill? (more…)
The Milwaukee 8” metal saw 6370-21 ($299) changed the game many years ago and made the circular saw tailored for metal cutting the preferred choice for make cutting pipe, conduit, etc. When Milwaukee M18 launched it was not long after the cordless M18 brushed model 2682-22 ($349) was launched in a more compact 5-3/8” design. Fast forward a few years now and the demand for more power, runtime and option for large capacity lead to the new M18 FUEL 2782-22 ($399) & 2782-20 ($199, bare) which we expect to see in April. Expanding on their metal working cordless tools Milwaukee is launching their first Brushless Die Grinder ¼” which will offer all the power of a corded tool and 25 minutes of runtime with one 5.0Ah battery. Ever since their first FUEL grinder was launched the die grinder has been requested by those looking for portability in surface prep and metal working. (more…)
The inventors of the portable magnetic drill press continue their commitment to producing the highest quality USA made magnetic drills with the release of their new HMD130 Ultra Low Profile Magnetic Drill. The Hougen HMD130 ($837) is the ultimate combination of power and compact design.
Recently we had an opportunity to try out a wide variety of Metabo tools at their media event. Of course the big focus was on their expansive line up of cordless tools designed specifically for metal trades. The 18V Brushless Tapping Drill GB18LXTBLIQ ($299, bare) is a perfect example of that in action. Not only are we looking at a great drill/driver with 1,300 in. lbs., currently the most powerful on the market, this drill makes tapping a crazy simple idiot-proof process. Snap the chuck off and it also becomes a ¼” driver for fastening and other applications.
Every holiday season it seems like the big boxes put serious pressure on all the name brand Power Tool guys to make the cheapest possible cordless tool kits and accessory bundles to hit their price points. They’ll pack them with older SKUs or lower amp batteries or throw in stuff that doesn’t always make sense all in an effort to show a “better deal” often targeting consumers that might not know the difference. We thought we’d take a different approach to find deals that make sense for PROFESSIONALS who know their stuff, to find the best deals on the latest and greatest stuff at all price levels.
