Another huge launch from Milwaukee Tool this week, stepping into a new category with a ton of applications for concrete and landscape professionals. Shocking to us this and other huge launches are all coming out before the big #NPS19 event which leads us to ask, what is bigger than these are they saving to launch at the event? This M18 Switch Tank System really is going to be a game changer and has a ton of very smart features. Of course being on one of the most popular battery platforms is a huge advantage over anything out now but they did some very smart things here including building the tanks & hoses to be completely self-contained so there is no chance of mixing chemicals anywhere in the tank, pump, hose or wand.
Basically there is one M18 Switch Tank Base and 3 tank options (pesticide, concrete chemical, water supply) depending on which tank you want first you’re looking at $399-$439 for the kit which includes 1x 3.0Ah battery (enough charge for 12 tanks). From there additional tanks are $149-$164 so it’s very easy to keep everything totally separate. We will continue to search out concrete tools and accessories to help our audience meet the upcoming OSHA Silica Dust standards, June 23, 2017. Cutting concrete outdoors with a gas cut-off saw and water hookup probably won’t change much however for indoor concrete cutting or dry cutting we will definitely see some new challenges. These new Core Cut C14 ($599) and C16 ($999) Concrete Saws are electric but offer serious power much closer to gas than we have seen in the past and can be used wet or dry. Many 14”+ electric saws currently don’t have water hookups or dust collectors and aftermarket attachments can be questionable. The new OSHA spec for dust collection require near HEPA filtration, automatic filter cleaning and 25 CFM per 1” of blade diameter in cutting. For a 14”saw that’s 350 CFM, you’re not going to find that at your local hardware store.
With Bosch selling the Skil brand to Chervon (Parent tool manufacturer behind EGO, Flex and many others) we were somewhat concerned as the SKILSAW brand has done a great job recently of separating itself out and re-branding towards the professionals again. There have been a handful of new tools built off it’s WormDrive technology including the WormDrive 10” Table Saw ($379), Outlaw 8” Metal Saw ($319) and SawSquatch 10-1/4” Saw ($399). It looks like a couple of things will be continuing, first the focus on new professional tools built off their trademark WormDrive platform and second the ridiculous names for every new saw will continue on as well! Launching January 2017 is the MeduSaw 7” Concrete Saw SPT79-00 ($399) it uses the WormDrive motor, also has built-in skate, guide, water hookup and dust collection.
Makita has recently announced the release of 3 new tools to be added to their new 12V CXT Cordless lineup: a Jigsaw, a 3-3/8” Tile/Glass Saw, and a portable L.E.D. flashlight. All of these tools utilize Makita’s new slide type battery packs that seem to be phasing out their older stick style packs. These slide battery packs come in 2.0 Ah & 4.0 Ah for extended run time compared to 12V MAX packs. Both feature L.E.D. charge level indicators.
Over last holiday season we saw the release of the first tools to utilize this 12V CXT system, their 12V Max CXT Drill/Driver Combo Kits, and it seems that they will continue to expand this lineup. (more…)
Everyone knows when you pour fresh concrete you need to build-in control joints so that if/when the concrete is stressed there is a controlled path for how the concrete will crack. This is the common practice but there are several ways which those concrete joints are installed. “Early Entry” saw cutting is method which refers to cutting while not fully cured or 2 – 10 hours after being poured. Husqvarna Soff-Cut is a well know name for Early Entry cutting but there a couple new kid in town from Diamond Products Core Cut with First-Cut Early Entry Saws. Of course they’ve got several reasons why their saws are best.
The World of Concrete is just a couple weeks away and one of the most functional but underutilized concrete tools is the Concrete Chain Saw. The down side for these saws is that the chains are a bit pricey, we won’t disagree it is definitely cheaper to use a standard circular diamond saw blade. However a handheld 14” cut-off saw ($699-$1199) can only cut into material with a depth of 5”. The smallest (& cheapest) diamond chainsaw 680ES-12 ($1399) can actually cut a full 12” depth of concrete and these saws can go all the way up to 25” cutting depth. It can be a little misleading, side by side, 14” cut-off saw next to a 14” chain saw, while the measurements in the titles are the same these tools are very different. (more…)
We’ve all hit an off-ramp going a little faster than you’re supposed to and been startled by the rumble strips. It really is the best way to alert drivers there is a change in the roadway ahead and you need to slow down. Have you ever wondered how those rumble strips get put there? Recently we had an opportunity to work with our friends at our regional DOT as well as Diamond Products who makes a nice converts kit for their most popular walk behind concrete saw Core Cut CC6571. The kit very easily turns the saw into a transverse rumble strip machine with a 4” width capacity.
The Core Cut CC6571D-36 large concrete saw from Diamond Products is a powerful, full sized self-propelled concrete saw that gives maximum large saw performance and output at the lowest price in its class. The very smooth running, liquid cooled, four cylinder Kubota diesel engine is very powerful yet has moderate fuel consumption, and can be used in a wide range of contractor and industrial applications. Easy to fit into a trailer with water tank and other necessary accessories. This unit definitely has the power needed for installing the 4” wide rumble strip.
Transverse rumble strips, also referred to as bar markings, are placed across the traffic lane to make sure motorists are alerted to hazards ahead, such as areas of pedestrian activity, bends in the road or intersections. They are typically useful where drivers have been travelling continuously at high speeds for a long period of time.
The 4” blade spacing kit (6010632A) can be added to the standard saw with very little additional work. The kit includes a wide guard to accommodate the four inch wide stack of blades and spacers. The (16) 12”x.250” blades and (15) spacers that go between each blade are added as shown below. Finally, the guard is installed. Now you are ready to install precision 4” transverse rumble strips.
The next step is to determine transverse rumble strip layout. Touch the diamond blade head to the roadway surface with the engine off and set the depth indicator to 0”. Now, start the engine and lower the diamond head down until the depth indicator reads the depth specified for your rumble strip. Set your depth stop on the saw so the head can go no deeper than the amount required for the rumble strip specification. Finally, begin your pass, making sure your travel speed is slow enough that the saw does not ride up and give you inconsistent depth.
The CC6571D-36 concrete saw has a transverse mounted Kubota diesel engine. It is rated at 66 horse power and its transverse mounting makes this saw the most maneuverable of other large saws. The engine is protected by an advanced cyclone air filter system for maximum engine life. The liquid cooled, four cylinder engine is a very smooth running power plant ever on such a large saw.
This saw includes a hydraulic raise and lower system for precise depth control and a dash mounted depth indicator for improved operator control. The saw features self-propelled operation with an Eaton transmission and two position handle bars for increased operator comfort.
The blade guard and blade can be mounted on either the right or left side for sawing in difficult to reach or tight areas. The saw is generally used with water, but may be used in dry applications with the correct type of blade. This Core Cut large saw has an oil bath blade shaft which means your operators won’t have to grease any grease fittings, leading to dramatically longer blade shaft bearing life. Finally, it has a belt tensioning system that is superior to any other large saw belt tensioning system, which means more power to your blades as well as longer belt life.

We made mention of the First Ever 4-Stroke Saw earlier this year at the World of Concrete and since then it has been a hot topic of conversation for many user of these types of saws. Well a handful of the Makita EK7651H ($1199, Ohio Power tool) have landed at select dealers around the country and are already getting some field use. When it comes to bridge replacements this is about as small of a project as they get, but it is a simple way to cover all the basics and we found it very interesting. We followed this crew as they competed each step of this work. We also talked with professionals on larger jobs and got some additional input for how this process would work on bigger job that might go the length of several football fields one hundred feet off the ground. Of course we will also take a look at several of the essential tools involved in this kind of operation, large or small. (more…)
