Every tradesman is always in the market for new batteries and new power tools to use with them. Makita knows this and is currently running a promotion where you don’t just get two batteries, but an additional TWO FREE batteries ($219 value) for a total of 4 with these three select OPE kits. So now is the perfect time to not only bolster your tool arsenal, but to keep those tools running with the 4 additional power sources. You can thank them later. (more…)
We saw these units briefly at the FLEXVOLT launch event last June, and think it is a smart move for all the power tool brands to expand their offerings to take advantage of their advanced battery platforms. This give the tool brands a big advantage over strictly OPE brands going cordless like Stihl, Oregon, EGO, etc because the batteries are already in the market place. This does cannibalize on their Dewalt 40V OPE line up (just launched last year), while their target is a bit different on paper we would not want to invest thousands into a 40v system when you know the big development moving forward is going to be on the FLEXVOLT platform. Why not keep it all together and just build a 120V FLEXVOLT backpack blower? (more…)
We discovered last year at the 2016 Milwaukee New Product Symposium that Milwaukee was planning on taking a jab at the landscaping industry with 3 key tools that will operate off their M18 platform. Demand for noise and emission reduction in landscaping companies has really pressed the need for a gas alternative. Many residential users also find it beneficial to be able to fire up a cordless trimmer or blower that they may use for 10 minutes once a month rather than mixing fuel and starting a gas one. While similar brands such as DeWalt and Makita have entered this market already, the introduction of Milwaukee’s 9.0 Ah High Demand Battery has really opened the door for them to compete very well as far as power and run time.
We recently got our hands on a competitor to this unit, the EGO String Trimmer and made some pretty bold statements. First was that that it was the best battery powered string trimmer we had ever used and second that there was no reason for a home owner to ever go back to a gas string trimmer. Both of those statements are still true but that may just be because we have yet to get our hands on the new Makita XRU04Z unit.
We are pretty excited to see what the performance of this unit is and there are a couple of reasons we are confident they can deliver on the performance, even with an 18V platform vs others using 36V, 40V or 56V. Since Makita has had great success with their duel 18V battery to 36V platform the fact that they didn’t go that route with this unit probably means they didn’t need to. Also since they will be launching an 18V Brushless Hammer Drill XPH07M with 1090 in lbs of torque in the very near future it would seem they may have cracked the code for delivering on a lot of power from a small 18V brushless motor. If this unit can deliver the power we hope it can it would most certainly be the lightest unit to do so at only 8.6lbs. (more…)
