As many of you know this week (May 6-10) is National Safety Stand-Down Week! A big focus of this effort traditionally is on Fall Hazards and Fall Prevention, but for those not exposed to fall risk still a great time for employers to talk about safety hazards they face on the jobsite. Our friends at FallTech are extremely busy this week doing multiple presentations everyday in our area and across the country with partners like Ohio Power Tool, doing the ABCD’s of Fall Protection. This year showing off their new addition, the UniDriver Rescue System which is an impressive piece of life saving technology.
Fall protection equipment is an essential part of any jobsite when it comes to working at heights. Crazy to imagine 11 people died building the Golden Gate Bridge and that was celebrated as a huge safety accomplishment. In the 1930’s the rule of thumb was 1 death per $1 million of project cost, at $35 million total the expectation was 35 people might die to get the job done (history.com). Today thankfully 1 death is too many when it comes to preventable injuries and as we learn more the technology improves. Leading Edge technology for SRLs is where many companies are headed to keep workers safe. (more…)
When working in any confined space there are a wide range of potential hazards and unfortunately has been a source for many worker fatalities in the past. For this reason there are some clear processes and procedure OSHA requires anytime some is going to enter a Confined Space. We have limited knowledgeable in this area but it is a very important topic which seems to raise a lot of questions, so we took a field trip to the Safex Training Facility to get a little better understanding of what processes, procedure, regulation and equipment are involved with working in confined spaces. When you or your workers are up in the air working at a height, it is imperative to ensure not only that you use fall protection equipment, but that you use the right fall protection equipment. A fall prevention system is composed of an Anchor, a Body harness, and a Connector, often being a lanyard with a deceleration or energy absorbing mechanism. In this article we will discuss some of the differences among SRLs (self-retracting lifelines), how to go about choosing the proper one for the job and the differences between Class A & Class B in SRLs. One of the biggest causes for injuries or even death on a construction jobsite are fall related accidents. A few simple steps can be taken with your fall protection harness to greatly reduce some of these potential risk. We were surprised to learn how big of a problem just proper fit for a Fall Protection Harness can be and how dangerous it is to improperly wear a harness. Our next installment of On the Job Safety Tips with Safex (Safety Consultants) video is on Proper Fit and Daily Inspection for your fall protection harnesses.
When it comes to fall protection we have seen more companies to not only meeting OSHA requirement but really surpassing them to ensure highest level of safety where an employee is at risk of falling off a bridge deck or high platform of any kind. The shock absorbing lanyards which may meet many requirements and have been common place for years are getting replaced in more and more situations by short Self-Retract Devices (SRD) like these new FallTech DuraTech SRD models which can also be worn on the back.
