Metabo 18V Circular Saw, Next Evolution in Saws?

As features get added to our tools we see an evolution across the board, one tool adds a better shank or recip saw goes to a tool-free blade changes and magically the rest follow. Circular saws are prime for a pretty substantial overhaul across the board, first off with more powerful brushless motors and higher capacity batteries, corded circ saws are going to be less and less common until one day it’ll seem as out of place as a corded drill on a jobsite. Circular saws are designed for portability, nothing fights that more than a cord so it seems pretty natural they’ll go away.

Where standard circular saw suffer the most is accuracy, these are traditionally rough cut tools, ripping stacked plywood or framing a house but not a go to for precision work. The Metabo KS 18V LXT 57 Circ Saw ($199, bare) is the first example of the next evolutionary leap in cordless circular saws to integrate track ready design, with the Bosch “Strong Arm” Circ Saw (see full MegaWattCrew Launch) later 2019 as well as Makita’s new XSH08 both with a similar design and we are sure others will follow very soon. Metabo 7.0Ah & 3.5Ah LiHD Cordless Coming Soon!!

Metabo LiHD 7.0Ah

While Metabo does not yet have a very large market share for cordless tools in the US they have been extremely aggressive on cordless product development globally. They were first to launch 5.0Ah several years back, then first to use new 20700 cells with LiHD batteries and now first to launch a 7.0Ah (sneek peak from Metabo Germany info)! Next month Coptool will be headed to visit the Metabo home office to get hand-on time with some of the new tools and technology. There are some interesting new Metabo Cordless Tools in the video below (hedge trimmers, rotary drills, etc) but will they make it to the US? Certainly there will be some exciting things to come, stay tuned.

Most importantly how do we get our hands on the giant Metabo Battery Scooter!!!

Metabo 18V Tapping Drill Driver, 1300 in. lbs.

Metabo Tapping Drill

Recently we had an opportunity to try out a wide variety of Metabo tools at their media event. Of course the big focus was on their expansive line up of cordless tools designed specifically for metal trades. The 18V Brushless Tapping Drill GB18LXTBLIQ ($299, bare) is a perfect example of that in action. Not only are we looking at a great drill/driver with 1,300 in. lbs., currently the most powerful on the market, this drill makes tapping a crazy simple idiot-proof process. Snap the chuck off and it also becomes a ¼” driver for fastening and other applications.

Metabo Tools 5 New Beveling Machines

Metal Beveling Tools

This week Metabo held a media event to showcase their current and upcoming tools. Of course we all know Metabo Grinders and Slicer Wheels as some of the best on the market for professional fabricators and metal workers. Metabo is known far less for cordless tools but we were incredibly impressed by their battery technology, which is very likely one of the best technologies around, granted a little pricier.

Building on their success in the grinder and metal working category Metabo is extremely focused on all tools related to metal working and bringing very specialized corded and cordless tool to market in this category. These new beveling tools are a great example of this coming to life.

2015 Cordless Hammer Drill Challenge – Bosch, Dewalt, Makita, Metabo, Milwaukee

Hammer Drill Comparison 2015

The hammer drill is the most popular cordless power tool, so no surprise these are the tools we see manufacturers reinvent every couple of years. With constant technology improvements things are changing faster and faster which is also why this is our 3rd comparison test (Comparison Test 1 5/12, Test 2 9/14) we’ve done for cordless hammer drills. Previously we compared these tools drilling holes into concrete, using “hammer mode”. Of course many of these tools will spend only a small fraction of their lives actually working in concrete and some may never touch any aggregate. The hammer drills are also included in most heavy duty combo kits so chances are good that’s what you’ll get even if you just wanted a drill/driver.

For this test we did 3 different comparisons in wood and metal to measure power, speed and runtime. We’ve got the latest tools all running 5.0Ah (5.5Ah Metabo) and their latest hammer drills; Bosch HDH181X-01L, Dewalt DCD995M2, Makita XPH07T, Metabo SB18LXTBL, and Milwaukee 2704-22 (new generation 2 brushless).
