We recently had the opportunity to visit Metabo’s headquarters in Nürtingen, Germany for a full tour of how they whined the copper, assemble armature, electronics, housing, etc. It was very impressive and clearly, they are continuing to advance in corded technology, which it seems other manufacturers have forgotten. Of course in USA Metabo’s bread & butter is their Grinders and Slicer Wheels so we were not surprised they continue to advance their motor technology in grinders. Coming to market as we speak Metabo is launching their compact Rat Tail Grinders which have the highest power/weight ratio ever of any grinder and also offer all their safety features clutch, brake, tethering attachment and more!

Last year was Metabo’s 50th anniversary so they came out with special edition 4-1/2” & 6” grinders with gold trim and some extra wheels in packaging. Well it’s no longer their 50th anniversary year while the 6” gold grinders are all gone you can pick up the few remaining Metabo Gold 4-1/2” Grinders for a steal at $99!!! That’s a huge savings, over 30% for a typical WP9-115 Quick, won’t last long!

We recently attended the Metabo event where we saw a lot of very innovative cordless products designed for the metalworking trades and actually got to use this “World’s First” cordless 9” grinder WPB36LTXBL230 ($1199) to cut through some guardrail. Very impressive power at 2400 watts which is roughly the equivalent to 21 amp corded AC power! This is one of the first cordless tools to really showcase how cordless is actually able to outperform corded tools. While the price may keep it out of reach for many at this point there will also be an 18V x2 version coming in early 2017 which will allow those with Metabo 18V batteries just to buy the bare tool version.

Over the years Metabo has really stepped out as the leader in high performance grinders. While grinders from Milwaukee, Dewalt, Bosch and Makita have continued to get better performance from their grinders the need to hit certain price points for the home centers or match each other has led to a balancing act of lower price vs performance. Metabo Professional Series of grinders has taken a little different approach to basically build the best possible grinder for the trades with all the feature options they might need. The result as you’d expect is a slightly higher price but offers the best performance and extended tool life. In the long run this can more than make up the initial investment, especially for those that rely on these tools for continuous use.

Metabo is one of those tool brands that you’re not going to find at the local big box stores, sure a little more pricy but also very dependable and well engineered. What Metabo is most known for is their grinders, we say this pretty confidently because other manufacturers use Metabo as the target comparison when redesigning their own grinders for power and durability.
The Metabo W18LTX ($123, Amazon) is Metabo’s first cordless lithium-ion grinder and we are pretty confident it’s going to perform very well if Metabo is going to put their name on it. We were also very surprised how reasonable priced the unit is compared to other 18 volt grinders. We only found it sold as an add-on bare tool however, not in a kit with battery and charger so you would also need to purchase a Metabo LTX Cordless tool kit. Check out the video below for more info on the Metabo 18V cordless line as well as the official Metabo Cordless Grinder press release after that.
