Metabo 18V Circular Saw, Next Evolution in Saws?

As features get added to our tools we see an evolution across the board, one tool adds a better shank or recip saw goes to a tool-free blade changes and magically the rest follow. Circular saws are prime for a pretty substantial overhaul across the board, first off with more powerful brushless motors and higher capacity batteries, corded circ saws are going to be less and less common until one day it’ll seem as out of place as a corded drill on a jobsite. Circular saws are designed for portability, nothing fights that more than a cord so it seems pretty natural they’ll go away.

Where standard circular saw suffer the most is accuracy, these are traditionally rough cut tools, ripping stacked plywood or framing a house but not a go to for precision work. The Metabo KS 18V LXT 57 Circ Saw ($199, bare) is the first example of the next evolutionary leap in cordless circular saws to integrate track ready design, with the Bosch “Strong Arm” Circ Saw (see full MegaWattCrew Launch) later 2019 as well as Makita’s new XSH08 both with a similar design and we are sure others will follow very soon. Makita Auto-Start Wireless System AWS Cordless

Makita AutoStart Wireless System AWS

Two big changes have been hitting the jobsite this year, we are seeing more heavy duty cordless tools taking the places of corded tools and clouds of silica dust are being eliminated. Unfortunately these 2 things don’t seem to work together as typical dust extractors turn on/off based off the tool plugged into them. Makita wireless AWS technology looks to change that, Auto-Start Wireless System (AWS), which uses Bluetooth™ technology for wireless communication between tool and vacuum/dust extractor to turn on/off makes a cordless vac system feasible from a power usage stand point. New AWS solutions announced was teased at their event last summer but fully launched last month at STAFDA including their first Cordless SDS-MAX hammer.

Makita brushless track saw XPS01

Recently we had the opportunity to attend Makita’s New Product Event where we got to see a handful on exciting new Makita products launching over the next several months in woodworking, concrete, outdoor power and many other categories. One product that was really a big launch for us was the Brushless Track Saw XPS01Z ($349,bare) or XPS01PTJ ($499, kit). If you’ve ever used Makita’s corded track saw SP6000J ($349) we’ve got good news if you liked it, bad news if you didn’t, they are very very similar. And the 55″ & 110″ tracks as well as all the other accessories are completely interchangeable.

Why a Track Saw is Better than a Table Saw

Dewalt Track Saw

Before you get too infuriated we are certainly not saying this is always the case but we want to highlight a few specific tasks where a track saw really is our personal choice over other more common tools such as a table saw. We also want to try and understand a little better why the track saw is not that popular in the USA when it is one of the most common tools used in Europe and other countries. (more…)
